There are almost no words to describe Spike Jonze's extraordinary piece of cinema; it's a reminder of why stories exist. Everything about this film comes together with such perfection and intimate detail to bring the viewers into this world and to open our hearts to the loneliness of our world and the potential that love truly holds. Her is nothing short of a master piece of cinema and a film I will no doubt be talking about for years to come.

Short Term 12 is a marvel that shows us why indie cinema is still essential. It is something to embrace from start to finish as the cast and writer give such genuine reality to the story and open up something so subtle yet heart-changing. All of this is carried on the shoulders of the phenomenal Brie Larson who shows us she is one of the most powerful and heartfelt actresses in the industry.

3. Saving Mr. Banks (2013)

Votes: 170,088 | Gross: $83.30M

Saving Mr. Banks is an incredibly moving story that we just didn't expect. The scenes in the 60's are humorous and engaging with the realistically mind-blowing Walt Disney played by Tom Hanks. Travers' childhood is so quiet yet triumphant, led by the heart-breaking Colin Farrell and all held up by the woman of the year, the unstoppable Emma Thompson who makes one of the most unlikable characters on screen in 2013, bring us to tears.

Director: Terry McDonough | Stars: David Bradley, Ross Gurney-Randall, Roger May, Sam Hoare

Votes: 7,548

A truly consuming tale about the back story behind one of Britain's longest running show. 'Adventure' stands out a powerful film because it shows all the love that went into the creation of Doctor Who that defeated the odds stacked against it. The story is utterly engulfing, but David Bradley's transformative performance will bring you to tears.

5. Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013)

PG-13 | 119 min | Comedy

Director: Adam McKay | Stars: Will Ferrell, Christina Applegate, Paul Rudd, Steve Carell

Votes: 192,392 | Gross: $127.35M

When one of the greatest comedies of the century gets a sequel nine years later, there is a lot of anticipation as to whether it might actually work. But all the humour and style behind the original Anchorman stands as tall as Ron Burgundy's fantastic hair to give us another one of the comedic masterpieces of the century.

Votes: 863,596 | Gross: $274.09M

It's hard to not be consumed by Gravity, the concept alone strikes fear into our hearts but the way Cuaron has captured it is on another level. It's hard to not be taken back by the beauty of space, yet instead we find ourselves digging clawmarks into our seats right until the very end, where impossible is redefined.

7. Snowpiercer (2013)

R | 126 min | Action, Drama, Sci-Fi

In a future where a failed climate change experiment has killed all life except for the survivors who boarded the Snowpiercer (a train that travels around the globe), a new class system emerges.

Director: Bong Joon Ho | Stars: Chris Evans, Jamie Bell, Tilda Swinton, Ed Harris

Votes: 389,250 | Gross: $4.56M

Snowpiercer is one of those surprising gems that just came out of nowhere from 2013, or to be precise Korea. What seems like it should be a basic idea, actually harks back to Orwell's ideas of totalitarianism. The script is bold, the cast is rough and the direction is aspiring. Snowpiercer stands above the rest as an excellent science fiction film and a political masterpiece.

8. Nebraska (2013)

R | 115 min | Drama

86 Metascore

An aging, booze-addled father makes the trip from Montana to Nebraska with his estranged son in order to claim a million-dollar Mega Sweepstakes Marketing prize.

Director: Alexander Payne | Stars: Bruce Dern, Will Forte, June Squibb, Bob Odenkirk

Votes: 123,577 | Gross: $17.65M

At first look Nebraska seems like the movie you go and see with your grandparents at the old-timey cinema; but something about Alexander Payne is a marvel. The film never has any big moments or points of high-tension really, it just dives into the gorgeous world of everyday life and the performances/writing/directing that come out are glorious, Bruce Dern is one of the turns of the year.

9. The Great Gatsby (2013)

Director: Baz Luhrmann | Stars: Leonardo DiCaprio, Carey Mulligan, Joel Edgerton, Tobey Maguire

Votes: 597,383 | Gross: $144.84M

While there is continual debate over the accuracy of this adaption, Luhrmann's Gatsby comes off a dazzling recreation of Fitzgerald's story. The glamour of the roaring twenties comes alive with incredible tension, design a powerful cast and another fantastic performance from Leonardo Dicaprio.

10. Now You See Me (I) (2013)

PG-13 | 115 min | Crime, Mystery, Thriller

Votes: 708,855 | Gross: $117.72M

Now You See Me stands out as rather spectacular as it plays out just like a magic trick, fooling the audience the entire way. What seem like flashy spectacles, reveal themselves to be cleverly woven plot points to pull the ultimate trick on the audience at the end, leaving our jaws on the floor.

Director: Peter Jackson | Stars: Ian McKellen, Martin Freeman, Richard Armitage, Ken Stott

Votes: 705,726 | Gross: $258.37M

Just as successful as the first installation, The Hobbit is a pleasant return to middle earth led triumphantly by it's wondrous cast and held high by Peter Jackson's fantastic direction and headlong dive into bringing back in detail the fantastic world of middle earth.

Directors: Ethan Coen, Joel Coen | Stars: Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, John Goodman, Garrett Hedlund

Votes: 163,576 | Gross: $13.24M

Inside Llewyn Davis keeps the audience in a trance the entire way through. There's something about the repetitiveness, the failure and the tiredness that is communicated beautifully in it's story and then brought to the forefront by the sensational Oscar Isaac that makes this film utterly engulfing.

14. Warm Bodies (2013)

Votes: 243,704 | Gross: $66.38M

In the age of Twilight, it's hard to get our head past the sea of gross mythical monster love cliches. But Warm Bodies is funny, heart-warming and somehow completely original. It turns a standard zombie movie into something completely different and is fantastically engaging.

15. 12 Years a Slave (2013)

Votes: 741,671 | Gross: $56.67M

12 Years a Slave is the emotional monolith of the year, writer, director and actors come together to provide an incredibly powerful look into slavery like we've never seen before and show us that a hero can overcome all oppression and all obstacles if he has the will to live.

16. Frozen (I) (2013)

Votes: 664,220 | Gross: $400.74M

Disney may have finally found a comeback in it's formula, Frozen is a sensation and a return to the renaissance era. It's visually stunning and emotionally powerful with wondrous storytelling; but more so it provides hope that Disney still has many more amazing stories to tell.

Votes: 1,584,947 | Gross: $116.90M

The Wolf of Wall Street is such an incredibly consuming look into debauchery in one of the world's biggest businesses. The direction and script are enough to keep you hooked into these revolutionary ideas for the entire three hours, but Dicaprio's marvellous performance as Jordan Belfort makes this film stand out as a triumph.

Votes: 232,187 | Gross: $187.17M

Gorgeous visuals, clever humour, a vibrant original world and a beautiful story make The Croods a solid piece amongst Dreamworks' repertoire. If anything The Croods proves that Dreamworks can stand on it's own against the colossal giant of Walt Disney.

Votes: 386,230 | Gross: $15.32M

Director: Dan Scanlon | Stars: Billy Crystal, John Goodman, Steve Buscemi, Helen Mirren

Votes: 390,330 | Gross: $268.49M

While the film may not be the quality of the original, Monsters University still bears the same love for characters and intrigue in the world to stand up a great prequel for it's predecessor.

22. American Hustle (2013)

R | 138 min | Crime, Drama

Votes: 500,479 | Gross: $150.12M

Director: Ryan Coogler | Stars: Michael B. Jordan, Melonie Diaz, Octavia Spencer, Kevin Durand

Votes: 85,927 | Gross: $16.10M

Fruitvale Station is a powerful idea, with some really thought provoking imagery going on, but ultimately the big lead up to the climax we know is coming and are waiting for is not enough to hold up the film considering it is the majority of the screen time.

34. August: Osage County (2013)

R | 121 min | Comedy, Drama

58 Metascore

A look at the lives of the strong-willed women of the Weston family, whose paths have diverged until a family crisis brings them back to the Oklahoma house they grew up in, and to the dysfunctional woman who raised them.

Director: John Wells | Stars: Meryl Streep, Dermot Mulroney, Julia Roberts, Juliette Lewis

Votes: 95,376 | Gross: $37.74M

It's no surprise to here August: Osage County is based on a play, as the big collective dramatic scenes seem to be pulled straight from the original book, yet the overall story seems unrefined and incomplete. However, it's the acting powerhouse from the whole cast that make August: Osage County watchable.

Director: Jeff Tremaine | Stars: Johnny Knoxville, Jackson Nicoll, Gregorio, Georgina Cates

Votes: 98,295 | Gross: $102.00M

Seeing as it is a Jackass film, you can never expect more than toilet humour from it, but it makes for a great night of laughs and comedians interacting with the unknowing public is always interesting.

37. Spring Breakers (2012)

R | 94 min | Crime, Drama, Thriller

63 Metascore

Four college girls hold up a restaurant in order to fund their spring break vacation. While partying, drinking, and taking drugs, they are arrested, only to be bailed out by a drug and arms dealer.

Director: Harmony Korine | Stars: Vanessa Hudgens, Selena Gomez, Ashley Benson, Rachel Korine

Votes: 148,842 | Gross: $14.12M

Spring Breakers is slightly untied, the imagery and ideas are there, but are repetitive and unclear. The nudity of college girls is excessive, but not entirely purposefully excessive? Regardless the intriguing ideas and great turn from James Franco makes Spring Breakers an interesting film.

38. Pacific Rim (2013)

PG-13 | 131 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Director: Guillermo del Toro | Stars: Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day

Votes: 531,191 | Gross: $101.80M

Pacific Rim is a good popcorn movie and great pack-a-punch visuals/action. But ultimately the story is plain and the acting is less than plain, but it makes for a good night of explosions and fighting.

39. Don Jon (2013)

R | 90 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

66 Metascore

A New Jersey guy dedicated to his family, friends, and church, develops unrealistic expectations from watching porn and works to find happiness and intimacy with his potential true love.

Votes: 247,122 | Gross: $24.48M

There are some nice performances here from Gordon-Levitt and Johansson, with an intriguing and humorous script; but ultimately Don Jon isn't as interesting or as thought-provoking as it hoped to be.

40. Rush (I) (2013)

74 Metascore

The merciless 1970s rivalry between Formula One rivals James Hunt and Niki Lauda.

Director: Ron Howard | Stars: Daniel Brühl, Chris Hemsworth, Olivia Wilde, Alexandra Maria Lara

Votes: 514,069 | Gross: $26.95M

While the story struggles to hold it's audience the whole way, the performance and gorgeous tone of Rush makes it a decent watch from a genre of film we don't see enough of.

41. The Great Beauty (2013)

Not Rated | 141 min | Drama

Director: Paolo Sorrentino | Stars: Toni Servillo, Carlo Verdone, Sabrina Ferilli, Carlo Buccirosso

Votes: 97,449 | Gross: $2.85M

There is an excellent sensuality taken with the film and the melancholy of age. But The Great Beauty is less a story of age and time and more a series of conceptual paintings. It's great imagery, but it's not all that much an interesting film.

42. Man of Steel (2013)

PG-13 | 143 min | Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

55 Metascore

An alien child is evacuated from his dying world and sent to Earth to live among humans. His peace is threatened when other survivors of his home planet invade Earth.

Director: Zack Snyder | Stars: Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane

Votes: 812,246 | Gross: $291.05M

The opening of the film showed such promise, with gorgeous visuals to boot. But the script fell flat on it's face as Man of Steel looked to be as thought-provoking and dark as the Dark Knight trilogy but ended up being just another cliche-packed flat superhero script.

43. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013)

PG | 114 min | Adventure, Comedy, Drama

54 Metascore

When both he and a colleague are about to lose their job, Walter takes action by embarking on an adventure more extraordinary than anything he ever imagined.

Director: Ben Stiller | Stars: Ben Stiller, Kristen Wiig, Jon Daly, Kathryn Hahn

Votes: 341,167 | Gross: $58.24M

There are some incredible visuals in the film, but ultimately 'Secret Life' doesn't really know what kind of film it wants to be, it's not particularly funny, nor is it particularly dramatic and when Ben Stiller simply doesn't care enough for the role the movie doesn't really give much to watch.

44. Jobs (2013)

PG-13 | 128 min | Biography, Drama

44 Metascore

The story of Steve Jobs' ascension from college dropout into one of the most revered creative entrepreneurs of the 20th century.

Director: Joshua Michael Stern | Stars: Ashton Kutcher, Dermot Mulroney, Josh Gad, Lukas Haas

Votes: 103,904 | Gross: $16.13M

Ashton Kutcher is definitely engaging in this movie, and shows that there is a lot more potential to him. But Jobs ultimately doesn't enough interest in it's story or really anything else other than its leading man to hold it up.

45. Sunshine on Leith (2013)

PG | 100 min | Comedy, Drama, Musical

66 Metascore

Two soldiers return home to Edinburgh to resume their romantic and family lives.

Director: Dexter Fletcher | Stars: Paul Brannigan, George MacKay, Kevin Guthrie, Jane Horrocks

Votes: 7,384

There are a few powerful showtunes in here and a great performance from Antonia Thomas, but Sunshine on Leith is ultimately just a movie without any climax or complication, it really is just a bunch of scots singing the Proclaimers songs, and they hardly have a repetoire to hold up the musical as it is.

46. Runner Runner (2013)

R | 88 min | Crime, Mystery, Thriller

36 Metascore

When a poor college student who cracks an online poker game goes bust, he arranges a face-to-face with the man he thinks cheated him, a sly offshore entrepreneur.

Director: Brad Furman | Stars: Ben Affleck, Justin Timberlake, Gemma Arterton, Anthony Mackie

Another attempt at an intense thriller from two actors who have tired out the genre. None of the actors were engaging and the story left the imagination wanting much, much more. It was hard to sit through to the end of this film.

PG-13 | 98 min | Comedy, Drama, Romance

78 Metascore

Director: Woody Allen | Stars: Cate Blanchett, Alec Baldwin, Peter Sarsgaard, Sally Hawkins

Votes: 212,629 | Gross: $33.41M

There's no denying Cate Blanchett's commitment and power in this piece, but it's not enough to save Woody Allen's self righteous trash. I felt like I sat through a 2 hour whinge session from a rich socialite as opposed to a story or a movie.

48. Philomena (2013)

PG-13 | 98 min | Biography, Comedy, Drama

77 Metascore

A world-weary political journalist picks up the story of a woman's search for her son, who was taken away from her decades ago after she became pregnant and was forced to live in a convent.

Director: Stephen Frears | Stars: Judi Dench, Steve Coogan, Sophie Kennedy Clark, Mare Winningham

Votes: 103,822 | Gross: $37.71M

Philomena aims to be an emotional vehicle stemmed from childhood tragedy, but ends up a boring self-righteous mess. The characters are utterly unlikable with a story that goes nowhere, leading to a cliche discovery all lead by the extremely irritable and worst person to watch on screen of the year, Steve Coogan.
