The Worst Films of 2021

by DareDevilKid | created - 18 Sep 2021 | updated - 20 Sep 2021 | Public

While I always have lists for the good films and some other truly memorable ones every year, the hugely disproportionate ratio tilted towards the mediocre to the downright deplorable movies every year, urges me to compile this list of of bad movies annually. Monumental disasters in most departments of filmmaking, these films failed to provide something even remotely resembling mild entertainment (let's not even get into their creative or technical aspects).

1. Bhuj: The Pride of India (2021)

113 min | Action, Drama, History

During the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, the Bhuj airbase is attacked and a race against time begins to rebuild the damaged airstrip.

Director: Abhishek Dudhaiya | Stars: Ajay Devgn, Sanjay Dutt, Sonakshi Sinha, Sharad Kelkar

Votes: 24,936

Intentionally or unintentionally, Bhuj: The Pride of India is so hilarious that it's destined to go down as a classic 'it's so bad that it's good' film. Sadly, the unimaginable intrepidity and sacrifice of those involved in this story deserved far, far, far better.

1/5 stars

2. Ghost Lab (2021)

TV-MA | 117 min | Drama, Horror, Thriller

After witnessing a haunting in their hospital, two doctors become dangerously obsessed with obtaining scientific proof that ghosts exist.

Director: Paween Purijitpanya | Stars: Thanapob Leeratanakachorn, Paris Intarakomalyasut, Nuttanicha Dungwattanawanich, Suquan Bulakul

Votes: 1,680

The only thing remotely scary, haunting, chilly, or atmospheric about Thai horror film Ghost Lab is how it draws you into a false sense of expectation only for nothing of note to ever occur. If anything, Netflix tricks you into approaching this as a horror movie – it's a docudrama at best and a filmmaker's rambling hypothesis at worst, peppered by outlandish, unconvincing performances (and they had the gall to make fun of Thai horror classic, Shutter).

3. Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar (2021)

125 min | Comedy, Crime, Drama

Sandeep, a bank executive and Pinky, a suspended cop, are marked for a kill. Phones tapped, accounts blocked, they escape but escaping is not freedom.

Director: Dibakar Banerjee | Stars: Parineeti Chopra, Jaideep Ahlawat, Arjun Kapoor, Raghubir Yadav

Votes: 9,073

Remove Parineeti Chopra and Anil Mehta's camerawork from Sandeep Aur Pinky Faraar and the film would fall absolutely flat. Director Dibakar Banerjee and his co-writer touch upon too many points, convey very little, and are further letdown by lackluster editing and another insipid performance from Arjun Kapoor.

4. A Classic Horror Story (2021)

TV-MA | 95 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

In this gruesome suspense film, strangers traveling in southern Italy become stranded in the woods, where they must fight desperately to get out alive.

Directors: Roberto De Feo, Paolo Strippoli | Stars: Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz, Francesco Russo, Peppino Mazzotta, Will Merrick

Votes: 21,916

Netflix's Italian horror film, A Classic Horror Story, is more like a “classic mess” of a horror story, with the plot all over the place and every character, positive or negative, being utterly bland. It's also a “classic case” of how a smart idea can quickly fall off the rails when poorly executed, and how not every homage to erstwhile classics makes for a good, new entry. Oh, and it's supposedly big twist could be seen from miles away. Pity that the country, which produced great horror Directors like Dario Argento, Lucio Fulci, and Mario Bava, is now producing this.

5. The Djinn (2021)

R | 82 min | Horror, Thriller

59 Metascore

A mute boy is trapped in his apartment with a sinister monster when he makes a wish to fulfill his heart's greatest desire.

Directors: David Charbonier, Justin Powell | Stars: Ezra Dewey, Rob Brownstein, Tevy Poe, John Erickson

Votes: 4,963

I'm all far low-budget indie horror and can overlook all its production and budgetary shortcomings as long as the makers have either something unique to bring to the table, or at least something fun, and in both cases, believe in their product. In the case of The Djinn, writer-Director duo David Charbonier and Justin Powell fulfill the first criterion with full marks, and, surprisingly, display enough skill along with their efficient technical crew to tide over their monetary limitations, but fall so hard when it comes to the belief and conviction needed to visually communicate their story, that I was compelled to ask after a point, "What the hell's going on, how did the plot go from there to there and then there, and what the eff are they trying to portray."

1.75/5 stars (purely for the idea)

6. The Soul (2021)

130 min | Drama, Horror, Mystery

The founder of a corporation developing a futuristic cancer treatment is brutally murdered, and a prosecutor sidelined by the illness asks to lead the case, assisted by his newly pregnant detective wife.

Director: Wei-Hao Cheng | Stars: Chang Chen, Janine Chun-Ning Chang, Anke Sun, Christopher Ming-Shun Lee

Votes: 3,371

Netflix's new Taiwanese thriller, The Soul, begins with a bang and has more than a few interesting ideas going for it in its first act, but the listless direction, interminable length, vapid dialogues, and snail-like pace makes it difficult to sit through after 40 minutes or so. This one nosedives from extremely intriguing to barely watchable pretty soon, and is a blueprint on why good ideas need good directors.

7. Outside the Wire (2021)

R | 114 min | Action, Adventure, Fantasy

45 Metascore

In the near future, a drone pilot sent into a war zone finds himself paired with a top-secret android officer on a mission to stop a nuclear attack.

Director: Mikael Håfström | Stars: Anthony Mackie, Damson Idris, Enzo Cilenti, Emily Beecham

Votes: 45,468

If it's not bad enough that Netflix's Outside the Wire feature a concept of which we've seen variations ever since sci-fi movies have been made, then to make matters worse, it's executed with zero imagination, lackluster energy, a pedestrian narrative, predictable plot devices that can be seen from miles away, and action scenes that hardly breathe life into the mundane proceedings. Despite Anthony Mackie and Damson Idris' wholehearted performances, they can hardly elevate this derivative dud.

1.75/5 stars (only for the performances)

8. Helmet (I) (2021)

104 min | Comedy, Drama

A quirky comedy from the heartland of India, it touches upon a topic that is considered embarrassing for most people in India and will showcase the same in a hilariously entertaining manner.

Director: Satram Ramani | Stars: Aparshakti Khurana, Abhishek Banerjee, Ashish Verma, Pranutan Bahl

Votes: 3,447

Instead of imparting a relevant message in a fun way, Helmet just makes condoms look boring and preachy.

1.75/5 stars (only for the performances)

9. Haseen Dillruba (2021)

TV-MA | 135 min | Crime, Drama, Mystery

Under investigation as a suspect in her husband's murder, a wife reveals details of their thorny marriage that seem to only further blur the truth.

Director: Vinil Mathew | Stars: Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey, Harshvardhan Rane, Aditya Srivastav

Votes: 30,115

Combined with the plot holes the size of craters on the moon (Taapsee Pannu's mostly astute script sense also seems to have abandoned her this time), which succeed in making medical science a joke of the highest order, and the regressive intent of the movie in showcasing women in the face inflated male egos; Hassen Dillruba can't be saved even by the always reliable Taapsee and her committed cohorts, Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane. This one is a far cry from Taapsee's standard for strong, empowered characters in her movies, be there may in female-oriented films or otherwise.
