We have discussed killers that received slasher movies, folklore turned cannibalism, and plenty of possession via person, home, or even object. What we haven’t done too much of is the good old-fashioned cult. While we took a deep dive into Jim Jones and the tragedy of Jonestown paired with the very well-done Sacrament, there are a ton of real-life cults and cult leaders that have been put to celluloid in an attempt to both cash in and tell a compelling story. I mean, I’m writing this right now on the couch while my wife watches a documentary about a cult on Netflix. True crime and religious cult stuff exist in popular forms like podcasts, shows, and of course movies too. Today we will look at two things that don’t get a lot of widespread attention. The 2007 horror movie Borderland (watch it Here) and what it is loosely...

John Woo’s maximalist style and taste for melodrama allowed him to ply his wares in Hollywood with far less friction than usually arises when an Asian auteur attempts to adapt their m.o. to meet American filmmaking demands. Despite issues with the more aggressive oversight of Hollywood execs, his Hard Target and Broken Arrow were both box office successes that, especially in the case of the former, retained a remarkable amount of Woo’s signature aesthetic flourishes and artistic philosophy. But the purest and maddest canvas on which he painted one of his American yarns remains Face/Off, a film that magnifies the over-the-top methods of its lead actors as adroitly as his Heroic Bloodshed films reflected the practiced cool of Chow Yun-fat.

End Times, the post-apocalyptic zombie film starring horror icon Jamie Bernadette and Craig Stark is out now in limited theaters and on VOD. Jim Towns, writes and directs and The Asylum distributes the feature.
End Times follows a pair of mismatched travelers, Claire and Freddie (Bernadette and Stark), as they try to escape a deadly pandemic that has turned Los Angeles into a zombie-infested wasteland. Claire is a privileged young suburbanite ill-equipped to survive in this hostile new landscape, until she meets Freddie, a retired soldier who lost his daughter to the virus. As they travel together to reach the perimeter, Freddie teaches Claire the skills that will enable Claire to survive, and the uneasy partnership between the two grows into something more akin to a father/daughter relationship. Before they can reach safety, the two will have to escape brutal gangs, cannibals, cults, and the undead.

A full Free Movie of the Day is posted on the JoBlo Horror Movies YouTube channel every day of the week – but on Fridays things get even freakier and a little more fun. Get your weekend started the right way by indulging in Friday Fright Nights! Every Friday, we’ll be taking a look at another genre movie you can watch in its entirety, free of charge, either on the YouTube channel linked above or in the video embed here.
The Friday Fright Night feature we have for you this week is the 2007 supernatural horror film Dead Mary, starring Dominique Swain – an actress I always expected to have a more high profile career than she has had up to this point. She got a lot of attention when she first appeared on screens in Lolita and Face/Off back in 1997, but she hasn’t done many big movies since then, with...

Despite its controversial subject matter, which involves a middle-aged man of letters obsessing over a 12-year-old "nymphet", Vladimir Nabokov's 1955 book "Lolita" is often regarded as one of the finest novels ever written. In 1998, the year that a new Adrian Lyne adaptation of "Lolita," starring Jeremy Irons and Dominique Swain, premiered on Showtime, Modern Library named Nabokov's book the fourth-best English-language novel published by Random House in the 20th century. This was the second attempt at a film adaptation of "Lolita;" the first came in 1962 when Stanley Kubrick was in the director's chair.
Kubrick's adaptation of "Lolita" works backward from the climax of Nabokov's novel, as Humbert Humbert (James Mason) confronts and shoots his drunken counterpart, Clare Quilty (Peter Sellers), in his mansion. The film magnifies Quilty's role, with Sellers even adopting a German disguise at one point, similar to how he would play multiple roles two years later in "Dr. Strangelove.

Ten months ago, Face/Off (watch it Here) star Nicolas Cage said he hadn’t heard anything about the Face/Off sequel, even though it was announced that Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard and his frequent collaborator Simon Barrett were working on a “direct sequel” to John Woo’s 1997 sci-fi action classic way back at the start of 2021. Thankfully, Cage and Wingard have since met up to discuss the possibilities of the Face/Off sequel – and during an interview with Collider, Cage said that it wouldn’t only be a rematch between his character Castor Troy and John Travolta’s Sean Archer. This one will also add their adult children into the mix.
Cage said, “I think Face/Off is a sequel that lends itself to a lot of twists and turns and unpredictability. It’s almost like if you factor in the idea of offspring and Castor and Sean having children and these children grow up,...

Set in what appears to be a dystopian, and possibly post-apocalyptic America, Shadow Master opens with a Swat team walking in on a martial arts battle in what looks like a hospital turned into a slaughterhouse complete with hooks and chains.
They arrest the only person still alive. Back at the station Detective Russells begins interrogating the suspect. He claims to be John Doe, although we’ll later find out his mane is actually An Voaen, the hospital’s night watchman. A job that paid him with food and a place to live.
The hospital is actually abandoned, and judging by its occupants such as the Harley Quinn wannabe Dewitt and her mother might have been an asylum. The group’s leader Boon-Nam tells him that there have been issues with children disappearing in the night,...

The first, and greatest, adaptation of Vladimir Nabokov’s troubling 1955 novel still possesses a strange and unnerving power
What happens when a magnet for controversy depolarizes with age? Vladimir Nabokov’s 1955 novel Lolita still attracts plenty of analysis, admiration and disgust, in the classroom and beyond. But despite the pedigree of the beloved film-maker Stanley Kubrick, the first film adaptation of Lolita – released 60 years ago this week – is arguably more of a curio these days, forced to excise or elide some of the book’s thorniest elements for the sake of being allowed to exist at all.
The sheer unlikelihood of a Lolita movie being made near-contemporaneously with the novel was worked into the ad campaign, some of its posters adorned with a cheeky question: “How did they ever make a movie of Lolita?” Good question, relatively simple answer: by ageing up the title character slightly, and relying on innuendos...

"No one makes it out alive!" Jb Films has released a trailer for an indie meta-horror horror film called For Jennifer, which originally premiered back in 2018 and is just now getting a VOD release. This is the latest in the Jennifer series created by Jody Barton and James Cullen Bressack. Jennifer, Stefanie, and Joey are making a movie. But soon the lines between what is a movie and what is real begin to disappear. And when making a horror movie, that can be a difference between life and death. Ooooooohhhhh so scary. The meta-horror aspect is because it's about a horror blogger who tries to make a horror movie who realizes there are other horror movies just like it and figures out she is also in a horror movie. Whew. The film stars Tiffani Fest, Felissa Rose, Dominique Swain, Lanett Tachel, Rich Finley, and Nick Kekeris. This is super duper,...

It's been a while that I saw 'Hexing', a horror-drama, and, seriously, even after vexing my grey cells, my mind is still in a haze, amused and far from being bewitched.
Narrated in a non-linear mode, the film is set in 2017, Paris. It begins on a promising note, with a prospective young lady seeking internship at Madame Estelle's (Camille Solal) antique store. A Yantra board, which is an Indian equivalent of the ouija board, catches the young girl's attention at the store. And thence, Madame Estelle reveals the history of the board, as to how it landed there.
We are informed, the Yantra board is a "spirit board" that is used in s?ances as a conduit to reach out to the spirits. But here, this board has its own logic akin to King Arthur's sword. The board cannot be shifted by all and sundry. It choses its possessor and it displays its demonic side,...

5 years after a private graduation party went awry (mostly for a man in a horror mask) our group of female friends head off to a cabin in the woods for a reunion. What could possibly go wrong? Our set up is simple. The 6th Friend trailer talks about “doom” and “secrets”… I tell you what a great, an all-female horror film involving All those things. The Descent. I wish I was watching The Descent.
It says something about my upbringing that when one of the ladies is rude to the male stripper / drug dealer I bristled slightly at how inconsiderate “Heather” was of the man’s feelings. A small businessman no less. What...

Name: Minutes to Midnight

Appearance: Action/comedy/horror slasher featuring a cast of B-movie acting greats and a couple of wrestlers.
Wait a minute…
I love wrestling. Big Daddy… Giant Haystacks…
Sadly, neither men are in it for they are no longer with us. (R.I.P) But you do get John “Johnny Impact” Hennigan playing a backpacker named Travis and Aaron “Jesus/Uno” Aguilera as the hulking psychopath Angus.
A killer named Angus? Ooooh scary…
He’s the deformed son of a family of psychopaths. You also get Calypso (an athletic Mercy Malick) and Gimple.

Coming soon to a VOD platform or Walmart near you is Boone The Bounty Hunter , and it’s one you definitely should be checking out. You don’t even need to be like me, a person who loves movies starring wrestlers and good old 90s-style action, to have a good time watching it.
John Hennigan is our star / producer / co-writer. After graduating from college with a film degree, he wrestled for WWE under the names Johnny Nitro and John Morrison, and he was pretty good at it; he now works for Aaa (a Mexico-based promotion) and Lucha Underground (the MTV wrestling show). But he’s always had a passion for the same sorts of movies I love – 80s / 90s comic action, kung fu, chase movies – and given the chance, he’s made this.

Funny or Die released a prank video inspired by Alice Lowe's very funny Prevenge, and we have it for Daily Dead readers to watch. Also in today's Horror Highlights: a new clip from The Black Room and details on the extension of the play Sirens of Titan at Sacred Fools Theater in Los Angeles.
Check Out Funny or Die's Prevenge Prank Video: "A pitch black, wryly British horror comedy from the mind of Alice Lowe (“Sightseers,” “Hot Fuzz,” “Paddington”) that’s as funny as it is vicious, Prevenge follows Ruth, a pregnant woman on a killing spree. It's her misanthropic unborn baby dictating Ruth's actions, holding society responsible for the absence of a father. The child speaks to Ruth from the womb, coaching her to lure and ultimately kill her unsuspecting victims. Struggling with her conscience, loneliness, and a strange strain of prepartum madness, Ruth must ultimately choose between...

"It will try to seduce you, trick you with pleasure, make you want more. It feeds off your desires." Check out the official trailer for a gore-filled horror film titled The Black Room, from filmmaker Rolfe Kanefsky. The film stars Natasha Henstridge (where has she been recently?) and Lukas Hassel as a newly married couple who move into their dream house, only to discover there's something evil in the "black room" in the cellar. Also starring Lin Shaye, Dominique Swain, James Duval, Auggie Duke, and Caleb Scott. From the looks of it, this doesn't seem like anything particular special. There's new horror films being made all the time, and this one seems forgettable despite the marketing. The flaming title card really tops it off. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Rolfe Kanefsky's The Black Room, direct from YouTube: Paul (Lukas Hassel) and Jennifer Hemdale (Natasha Henstridge) have just moved into their dream house.
