28 Years Later, an upcoming zombie film trilogy that fans have been clamoring for 17 years is finally becoming a reality. However, the long-awaited announcement of the new trilogy had some disappointing news. Cillian Murphy, who starred in the original movie, 28 Days Later, and an executive producer of the film will not be a part of the first film.
Cillian Murphy as Dr J. Robert Oppenheimer
Even though Danny Boyle and Alex Garland have put their project as one of the hottest upcoming films in Hollywood, fans are quite disappointed with Murphy’s absence in the first film. While the Oppenheimer actor will not be a part of the first film, fans of the upcoming post-apocalyptic film should not be disappointed as there’s some positive news for them. Though absent from the first film, he is going to be a part of the sequels.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Anyone But You (Will Gluck)
If anything, Anyone But You‘s spirit is encapsulated in having a running joke about “Unwritten” by Natasha Bedingfield (gags involving that artist’s back catalog seeming to be the Will Gluck auteurist touch) as if the movie’s wholly bland pop soundtrack puts it above that at-least-memorable 2000s ditty. Slight self-awareness with no effort to actually do anything new is the definition of unearned arrogance. This is why it fails as a romcom: too much smarm and not enough charm. – Ethan V. (full review)
Where to Stream: Netflix
Garrett Bradley: Devotion
If you’ve only seen Garrett Bradley’s staggering, Oscar-nominated documentary Time, it’s prime time to catch up on a pair of her earlier work.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has just been confirmed for another major role, but it’s not the one that you may think of.
The actor has signed up to star in 28 Years Later, an upcoming post-apocalyptic movie directed by Danny Boyle and written by Alex Garland, whose most recent hit Civil War is now blowing all the theaters up.
Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer and Harry Potter’s Ralph Fiennes are also in. The plot details are still under wraps, but the film will surely have connections with the 2002 original horror 28 Days Later that starred Cillian Murphy and Naomie Harris.
The original storyline revolves around bicycle courier Jim, portrayed by Murphy, who wakes up from coma amid a global pandemic caused by some aggression-inducing virus. In an attempt to survive, Jim will have to team up with a few lucky ones who haven’t turned into furious zombies yet.

Danny Boyle's lo-fi 2002 zombie apocalypse film "28 Days Later" caused a stir in the horror community for its grainy digital photography (shot by Anthony Dod Mantle) and for its introduction of "fast zombies" into the pop vernacular. The zombies in "28 Days Later" were, unlike most movie zombies seen up to that point, fast-moving and vicious rather than mindless and shambling. It is credited for breathing new life into the zombie genre, followed as it was by other zombie hits like the "Dawn of the Dead" remake, George Romero's "Land of the Dead," and the hit 2010 series "The Walking Dead." "28 Days Later" also tapped into a lot of America's post-9/11 ennui, presenting hard-edged images of urban desolation. Everyone felt like the world had ended, and Boyle aesthetically agreed.

Back in 2002, Danny Boyle and Alex Garland's horror tale 28 Days Later was largely cast with rising stars, with a few more veteran actors here and there. Before becoming one of the leading directors of our time, Alex Garland made a name for himself in the literary field. His debut novel The Beach was translated into 25 languages and later made into a movie starring Leonardo DiCaprio.
The author wasn’t particularly involved in the film adaptation, but Danny Boyle found out about Garland and hired him as a screenwriter for his future innovative zombie horror film 28 Days Later, which became the writer’s ticket to the world of big cinema.
Now his fifth directorial project has been released – the large-scale military dystopia Civil War, A24's most expensive project and, according to many critics, Garland's best work.
Garland's Directing Career Began With an Undeniable Success
However, the beginning of Alex Garland's directorial career was no less successful – in 2014, his debut sci-fi thriller Ex Machina was nominated for an Oscar for Best Original Screenplay and won a statuette for Best Visual Effects.

Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" films are an embarrassment of riches. With a strong ensemble cast, gorgeous visuals, an arresting story, and production design to die for, the filmmaker's take on Frank Herbert's epic sci-fi saga is firing on all cylinders. The movies also have fantastic effects makeup; a talented team is responsible for turning Austin Butler into a scowling, pale villain, etching runes onto the faces of the Bene Gesserit, and making everyone generally look both hot and windswept.
Oscar-nominated makeup artist Donald Mowat is credited as head of the makeup department on both 2021's "Dune" and "Dune: Part Two," but in 2020, he told Inside The Film Room that he nearly didn't get to work on the movies after all. Mowat previously collaborated extensively with Daniel Craig, doing his makeup on films like "Cowboys & Aliens" and "The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo" before joining the Bond franchise for "Skyfall" and Spectre.

Hollywood star Cillian Murphy has portrayed a diverse array of characters on-screen, including his acclaimed performance in the Oscar-winning biographical thriller Oppenheimer. It almost seems like a common phenomenon that audiences see scenes in a movie trailer that don’t actually appear in the final movie. Sometimes, in the case of CGI-laden blockbusters, they can alter the location of a scene from a trailer to another location in the final cut of the film. Sometimes, even a hint of a subplot from a trailer can be cut from the movie altogether. This is what has seemingly happened with the Beatles-themed comedy Yesterday from Danny Boyle. The trailer for Yesterday featured a scene where Ana De Armas was presumably making a cameo, as she does not appear on the cast list for the movie.
Universal was sued by Peter Michael Rosza and Conor Woulfe, viewers who had seen De Armas in the trailer and thought she would be a prominent part of the film, except her appearance winded up getting cut from the movie.

Actors are asked to do a lot of potentially terrifying things in the name of their work, especially when filming horror movies. So it's not really a surprise that Irish actor Cillian Murphy was slightly scared about filming one particular scene in Danny Boyle's early 2000s film "28 Days Later," although the reasons behind his nervousness might not be what you think. Instead of panicking about filming a sequence with one of the movies' horrifying zombie extras or having to deal with some of the movie's more extreme horror aspects, Murphy was concerned about the brief nude scene that introduced his character to audiences. It's a rather brief moment, but it's honestly understandable that Murphy was a little nervous, as it's a full-frontal nude shot that shows off the uh, whole kit and caboodle.

Yesterday, all their troubles seemed so far away.
In 2022, Peter Rosza and Conor Woulfe sued Universal Pictures after they rented the 2019 movie “Yesterday” on Amazon Prime Video and subsequently felt they had been bamboozled by the trailer. The film, directed by Danny Boyle and written by Richard Curtis, is a zany musical fantasy in which Himesh Patel, a struggling musician, is bonked on the head and wakes up in a world in which The Beatles Never Happened. As such, he starts playing their songs as if they are his own and the movie follows the expected Preston Sturges-like tropes you might expect.
The trailer for the movie featured quite a few glimpses of the alluring Cuban-born actress Ana de Armas, later Oscar-nominated for her leading turn in “Blonde,” who ended up not being in the movie at all. An early cut included her character, but that storyline was shaved down after the movie tested poorly.

In notching A24’s highest-grossing opening weekend to date, Alex Garland’s debate-stirring combat film Civil War has made plenty of noise — both figuratively and literally.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny and Wagner Moura, the project has spurred conversation over its depiction of a small group of journalists witnessing the violently divided U.S. en route to collecting $25.7 million at the domestic box office this weekend. Among the buzziest elements of the film has been its sound design, as Civil War’s use of jarring battle noise, along with the impactful contrast between its onslaught of gunfire and moments of dead silence. It all adds to the chaos and tension.
Civil War supervising sound editor Glenn Freemantle, an Oscar winner for 2013’s Gravity, tells The Hollywood Reporter that he and frequent collaborator Garland were in lockstep in how to best create the film’s dystopian world.

When "28 Days Later" was released in 2002, it heralded the revival of the post-apocalyptic zombie movie after years of the subgenre lying dormant. While the success of the film — directed by Danny Boyle and penned by Alex Garland — kicked off a wave of zombie media that led to not only the return of the subgenre's progenitor, George A. Romero, but also shows like "The Walking Dead" and films like "Shaun of the Dead," "Zombieland" and so on. It didn't necessarily kick off a franchise for itself, however. Despite 2007's "28 Weeks Later" — directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo — being generally well-received, a follow-up failed to happen, despite years of rumors that Boyle was interested in returning to the world of the rage virus.

Nia DaCosta is in talks to direct the second part of the upcoming “28 Years Later” trilogy from Danny Boyle and Alex Garland.
Previously, she directed and co-wrote “The Marvels” starring Brie Larson, Teyonah Parris and Iman Vellani, and “Candyman,” a contemporary spiritual sequel of the 1992 cult horror classic of the same name for Universal and Monkeypaw Productions.
“Candyman” opened to No. 1 at the box office, making DaCosta the first Black female director to open at the top of U.S. box office charts. DaCosta made her feature debut with the critically acclaimed “Little Woods,” which she wrote and directed.
When DaCosta sat down with Variety last fall to discuss “The Marvels,” she was proud of checking “direct an MCU” movie off her directors bucket list and looking forward to what came next.

Box office preview: Alex Garland’s ‘Civil War’ will try its best not to divide the moviegoing nation
After a quieter April opening weekend, we get a slightly busier one with one high profile wide release and a handful of smaller releases. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
The big release of the weekend is “Civil War,” filmmaker Alex Garland‘s fourth feature film as a director, and one that is reportedly A24’s biggest budget production, reportedly costing $50 million. Set in a dystopian war-torn future America, the movie stars Oscar nominee Kirsten Dunst and Cailee Spaeny from “Priscilla” as two wartime journalists heading to D.C. to interview the President (Nick Offerman), who is about to be deposed by a group of opposing rebels. Dev Patel’s feature directorial debut Monkey Man leads the new films at this weekend’s UK-Ireland box office, starting in 592 cinemas through Universal.
Directed, produced, from a story by and starring Patel, Monkey Man follows an anonymous young man who unleashes a campaign of violence against the corrupt leaders who murdered his mother, and continue to systematically victimise the poor and powerless.
Filmed in early 2021, Netflix originally bought worldwide rights to Monkey Man. After Jordan Peele boarded the title as producer through his Monkeypaw Productions, Universal acquired it from Netflix earlier this year. It debuted at SXSW last month.

With shooting set to start imminently, reports are suggesting that Jodie Comer may be starring in Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later.
Fans of 2002’s 28 Days Later are all too aware of the decades-long gap that exists between Danny Boyle’s 2002 zombie horror and his follow-up, expected to release in cinemas sometime next year. While it might not quite be 28 Years Later, as the upcoming film’s title suggests, it won’t be far off – in fact, it feels like we’ve been waiting forever for this film to happen.
Still, every nugget of news we’ve heard thus far has made the waiting worthwhile.
Boyle returning to direct; Alex Garland once again writing the script; Cillian Murphy making himself available to return. Sony backing the project with around $60m, precisely the kind of sum that should mean the project should have some creative leeway.
It’s all welcome news.
