The May 17 release of the 2024 Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue celebrates the swimsuit franchise’s 60th anniversary. A new documentary highlights the woman who founded the issue in 1964 – Jule Campbell.
Directed by Campbell’s daughter-in-law Jill Campbell, “Beyond the Gaze: Jule Campbell’s Swimsuit Issue” explores how the editor, who died in 2022, broke glass ceilings, navigated a sexist workplace and battled accusations of objectification, all while launching the careers of mogul models including Kathy Ireland, Christie Brinkley and Tyra Banks.
The 107 minute film, produced by Eue Documentaries and Red Barn Productions, recently wrapped production. The director is currently submitting the doc for consideration at various fall film festivals.
During her 32-year tenure as founding editor of the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition, Campbell was charged with the task of creating a yearly swimsuit issue that did not come across as gratuitous. The docu investigates how she managed to control the photographs that...

It’s considered one of the most paused moments in movie history, the scene in Basic Instinct where Sharon Stone – as Catherine Tramell, a revamp on the femme fatale – uncrosses her legs during an interrogation, revealing she has nothing on underneath. It made Sharon Stone and pushed boundaries on what could be shown in mainstream cinema. But today? That moment in the 1992 icy-cold thriller may not even register as risque to many.
Appearing on Who’s Talking to Chris Wallace, Sharon Stone said that Basic Instinct scene pales in comparison to what can be found while flipping through the channels. “You see so little of anything in this film, actually. And now we see men with full frontal nudity on television. But still we look at that film as such a scandalous, controversial moment in filmmaking. And really, it’s quite benign by comparison to almost anything you see now.

“Good Night Oppy” lived up to its name. The space doc about rovers on Mars took the top honors at the 7th Annual Critics Choice Awards in midtown Manhattan. The move from Brooklyn (where the show had been produced for the last six years) was an upgrade. “Take a look around the Edison Ballroom,” ‘Oppy’ filmmaker Ryan White said. “It was a theater for over 60 years and did ‘Oh Calcutta’ for 13 years. Totally nude with sex-related sketches written by Sam Shepard, Samuel Beckett, Jules Feiffer and John Lennon.” Okay, yes, this place in the Edison Hotel is cooler.
Comic Wyatt Cenac hosted. “Keep making good stuff,” he told the audience. “So next year we don’t have to turn this thing into an awards show for TikTok explainer videos.” The star power was amped up for the new digs. Paul Shaeffer gave “The Beatles: Get Back” its Best Musical Doc award.

More than a theme, “Be the Light” is a call to action. Those who are willing to answer the call are essential in the fight to end the single most insidious threat lurking in communities all across the globe: human trafficking and modern-day slavery.
Every thirty seconds, a child or teen is sold into slavery. It’s not something that only happens in third-world countries—it’s happening near you. Possibly in your own neighborhood. Possibly in your own home.
Anti-Trafficking International (Ati) is honored to have its Global Ambassador DJ Pryor serve as keynote speaker for its inaugural annual “Be the Light” gala, to be held at The Golf Club at Lansdowne in Leesburg, Va, on Friday, October 15 at 7 p.m.
For almost two decades, DJ Pryor has entertained audiences as a stand-up comedian, actor, speaker, musician, and director. Since 2019, he has been a vocal advocate for mental health and overcoming childhood trauma.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Rick and Morty” Season 5, Episode 4, “Rickdependence Spray.”]
Some “Rick and Morty” episodes feel especially like a writers’ room dare. Maybe a wild, tossed-off idea that, the more people joke about it and add on bizarre details, starts to take shape into something workable.
That “writing challenge as story idea” format can flourish in prosperous ways. (“What if Rick got turned into a vegetable and became an action hero?”) Other times, it’s a recipe for a “spot the reference” casserole that the show has fallen back on of late. “Rickdependence Spray,” the fourth installment in a to-this-point-impressive Season 5, arrives as a 23-minute sex joke with some grafted-on, sci-fi thriller trappings and some other familiar coating for good measure. Aside from the 1996 blockbuster that gives the episode its title, there’s War Room antics, an “Empire Strikes Back” visual gag, and a light dusting of “Lord of the Rings” machinations. Credit...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read until you have watched “Rick and Morty” Season 5, Episode 4, “Rickdependence Spray.”
Whether intentional or not, it’s an interesting bit of timing that — considering the inspiration for the title — “Rickdependence Spray” is the “Rick and Morty” Season 5 episode that airs the week after Independence Day. That’s not to say that airing this episode on the Fourth of July would have made its existence make much more sense, there’s just a certain synergy that would have come with it. Instead, “Rickdependence Spray” seemingly exists in its own little world, both in terms of scheduling and the very premises and execution.
Sometimes it comes across like Justin Roiland, Dan Harmon, and the rest of the “Rick and Morty” writers’ room create episodes specifically just to see how inaccessible they can be to outsiders, or to see just how poorly they will land if they were...

Rather, it's the woman who inspired Martin's character in the new NBC comedy—and the series itself—Wigfield's own mother, Kathy. And the resemblance is hilariously uncanny. Great News tells the story of Katie Wendelson (Briga Heelan), a producer on a national cable news show, whose overly-involved mother Carol (Martin) decides it's never too late to follow your dreams and, after 30 years as a stay-at-home mom, lands herself an internship—on Katie's show. Christian movies: Starring Nicolas Cage, the widely panned 2014 apocalyptic thriller 'Left Behind' was a box office bomb – unlike (relatively) recent popular 'faith movies' such as 'Heaven Is for Real,' 'Son of God' and 'War Room.' A thought on the New Christian American Cinema: Tired of the blatant propaganda found in 'mainstream' Christian movies Two films that might be called “Christian movies” opened last week, and I decided that I wouldn't watch them, write about them, or review them – at least directly. I'm not even going to mention their titles here because I don't promote propaganda films, and that's what this recent advent of Christian movies has become: propaganda. After all, since nearly all American cinema is Christian cinema, the New Christian American Cinema is in fact pure propaganda – not cinema. Worse yet, it bores me. So, here's the thing about what we've come to call...

Some of which have been made available in the UK for the first time since VHS and a Lot that have been added to the service in their original uncut form!

They died within a day of one another — but that’s not the only parallel in the lives of Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher.
The mother-daughter duo’s Hollywood careers were filled with coincidences. From their signature movies to their troubled marriages, here are a few instances where their lives lined up.

When I first heard that Carrie Fisher had written a novel several years ago, it seemed like an absurd one-off, like Don Johnson’s album with Barbra Streisand, or a line of Kathy Ireland sportswear. But Fisher, as it turns out, could turn quite a phrase. And in light of all the recent The Force Awakens/Rogue One rejuvenation (in some form, Fisher appears in both), Fisher’s true writing talent is in danger of getting lost in the Death Star shuffle.
Fisher is being described across social media as a woman “who gave no fucks” as she gleefully poked fun at the movie that made her famous at 19, while chiding those who despaired that she had aged in the almost four decades since Star Wars premiered. But she long had (the past tense is paining me here) a musical gift for rearranging familiar words and phrases into something ...

Alas, "The Ice Storm" (or whatever...
