“I have Alzheimer’s in my family, I have a lot of it, actually, the genetic kind that tends to trickle down through generations,” shares Bekah Brunstetter about why Nicholas Sparks’ “The Notebook” and its film adaptation resonate with her so deeply. As the book writer for the musical adaptation that recently opened on Broadway, she wrote the piece as a way to honor her late grandfather. “The thing that was so beautiful, even when he was slipping away from us, he maintained his sense of humor and his love of life,” reflects the librettist, who hopes to “honor the experience of the disease but also provide some hope and uplift.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
Brunstetter is no stranger to working on tearjerking projects, having served as a writer and producer on the NBC drama series “This Is Us.” “All the work we did on ‘This Is Us...

The Tony Awards Administration Committee met for the third time during the 2023-2024 Broadway season on April 19, to discuss eligibility of 8 productions for the 77th Annual Tony Awards in 2024.
They discussed eight productions: “Days of Wine and Roses,” “Doubt,” “The Notebook,” “An Enemy of the People,” “Water for Elephants,” “The Who’s Tommy,” “The Outsiders” and “Lempicka.” The group also met during the winter to discuss late fall and winter openings, but those determinations were not made public until now. Those shows include: “I Need That,” “Harmony,” “Spamalot,” “How to Dance in Ohio,” “Appropriate” and “Prayer for the French Republic.”
The most notable ruling is that “Appropriate” will compete as a revival. The hit play from Branden Jacobs-Jenkins has never been seen on Broadway before this season, but previously enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run with a different director and cast. Since it is the play’s Broadway debut, Jacobs-Jenkins will appear...

Ingrid Michaelson is used to people crying when they talk to her about The Notebook. Earlier this year, she tells me on Zoom, her piano in the background, she did an interview about her work on the Broadway musical adaptation of the beloved 2004 film, based on the novel by Nicholas Sparks. The journalist she was talking to had lost both of his parents, and Michaelson had lost her parents as well — her mother in 2014, and her father three years later. “We both were staring at each other for like 30 seconds...

Welcome to Tony Talk, a weekly column in which Gold Derby contributing theater editors David Buchanan and Sam Eckmann discuss the Tony Awards race. Following the opening of new musical “The Outsiders” on Broadway on April 11, we rack our brains about what other shows are likely to earn nominations in the top category of Best Musical, including frontrunners “Suffs,” “Illinoise” and others.
Sam Eckmann: Hi David! I can’t believe we are sitting roughly two weeks out from Tony nominations and we still have no idea what the Best Musical race is going to look like. That’s partly due to the insane crunch of new musicals opening at the end of the month: I’ll be squeaking in shows like “The Great Gatsby” and “Illinoise” right before the Tony Awards deadline, just like the nominators. But also partly because there is still no obvious frontrunner (be it a giant...

“The show is obviously a love story which I think people expect, but it’s also about loss and life and how you spend your days and your time and the people with whom you do that,” reflects Ryan Vasquez about the new musical “The Notebook,” which just opened on Broadway at the Gerald Schoenfeld Theatre on March 14. The actor stars as Middle Noah, a character he originated in the tryout of the show in Chicago in 2022. He calls that production “an experiment” because the show touched “such an open nerve” when it premiered right in the wake of the pandemic. Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“The Notebook” is adapted from the Nicholas Sparks novel of the same name, which also inspired a successful film 20 years ago. Vasquez shares that he actually “saw the movie in theaters way back in 2004,” explaining that he was a “huge fan of Rachel McAdams,...

I thought I was safe to boldly pronounce my initial 2024 Tony Awards predictions, but then Sufjan Stevens appeared to stomp all over them. As David Buchanan and I convened to discuss where we thought the musical nominations were headed this season, news broke that Off-Broadway’s dreamy dance show “Illinoise” will transfer to the St. James Theatre just in time to compete at this year’s ceremony. The show, based on Stevens’ seminal album, has thrown our Tony predictions into disarray. Watch our full video slugfest above.
“Illinoise” marks the 15th new musical of the 2023-2024 season. That’s more new tuners than any Broadway season since 1975-1976. Theatergoers this year are indeed spoiled with a glut of new shows, but predicting the coveted Best Musical category has become a titanic task.

The new Broadway musical The Notebook celebrated its opening night this week!
Singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson, who wrote the music for the new show, joined the cast at the celebration on Thursday night (March 14) at the Schoenfeld Theatre in New York City.
Three sets of actors portray the roles of Allie and Noah, who were made famous by Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling in the movie version.
Cast members Joy Woods (Middle Allie), Ryan Vazquez (Middle Noah), Maryann Plunkett (Older Allie), Dorian Harewood (Older Noah), Jordan Tyson (Younger Allie), and John Cardoza (Younger Noah) all walked the red carpet at the event. Director Schele Williams and original book author Nicholas Sparks also were in attendance!
“What truly sells the couple’s romance — and, by extension, the entire show — are the dazzling performances by every version of Noah and Allie,” wrote Entertainment Weekly.

To say The Notebook had a devoted, built-in audience before it sang so much as a note on Broadway would be an understatement this romantic tear-jerker never attempts.
Based on Nicholas Sparks’ 1996 bestseller about a young – then older, then much older – couple who survives a lifetime of tribulations (until they don’t), the musical opening tonight at the Schoenfeld Theatre is the theatrical equivalent of muzak, comforting in its unapologetically manipulative way and unabashed in its disregard for anything approaching the grit of the real world.
The reference to muzak, by the way, isn’t meant to suggest that composer Ingrid Michaelson looks back quite that far for her musical inspirations. She has a lovely way with a melody, even if so many of the songs...

Broadway adaptations of beloved movies are nothing new — and in fact will be increasing like never before this season with “Water for Elephants,” “The Outsiders,” “The Great Gatsby,” and more musical adaptations opening just in the next month.
It’s such a thrill, then, that “The Notebook” musical, based on the Nicholas Sparks book of the same name — which of course was also turned into the beloved movie starring Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams — is such a romantic, weepy success, managing to honor the tale fans know while also sneaking in a savvier story, one that doesn’t look away from the horrors of dementia but retains the beautiful message of everlasting love.
The book, by Bekah Brunstetter, begins with a few smart updates: The earliest action between Younger Noah (John Cardoza) and Allie (Jordan Tyson) is moved from the WWII-era of the film to Vietnam-era, which Noah and friends get tangled up in,...

“Time, time, time, time, it never was mine, mine, mine, mine,” sings the elderly Noah Calhoun (Dorian Harewood) in the opening number of The Notebook, the new Broadway musical with a gossamer score by indie-pop singer-songwriter Ingrid Michaelson. “But you know what is?/Love, hope, breath, and dreams/As cliché as that seems.”
Cliché is at the heart of The Notebook’s appeal, from Nicholas Sparks’s 1996 novel to the 2004 film starring Rachel McAdams and Ryan Gosling as destined lovers Allie and Noah. “You are every reason, every hope, and every dream I ever had,” Sparks banally wrote in the novel. “Every day we are together is the greatest day of my life.” Though Michaelson alludes, with seeming self-awareness, to the platitudes of the source material in that opening song, this production never quite transcends the clichés that it conflictingly both seeks to challenge and embrace.

Richard Romanus, the tough-guy character actor best known for his turn as Michael Longo, the Little Italy loan shark who gets into it with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Civello in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets, has died. He was 80.
Romanus died Dec. 23 in a private hospital in Volos, Greece, his son, Robert Romanus, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Romanus handled prominent voice roles for Ralph Bakshi in 1977’s Wizards (as the elf warrior Weehawk) and 1982’s Hey Good Lookin’ (as the leader of a 1950s greaser gang), and in between, he played the cab driver Harry Canyon in another animated film, Heavy Metal (1981).
He also appeared on four episodes of The Sopranos as Richard Lapenna, the on-again, off-again husband of Lorraine Bracco’s Jennifer Melfi, from 1999-2002.
In Mean Streets (1973), Romanus’ character is famously disrespected by Johnny when he leans on him for his money.

The Primetime Emmys are not necessarily known for honoring projects featuring casts that are primarily minority/people of color. The TV academy has never, for instance, given the Best Drama Series trophy to such a show. The statuette for Best Comedy Series has been won by a series featuring a largely minority cast precisely once: “The Cosby Show” in 1985. But the category of top limited/anthology/miniseries has paid golden tribute to programs with mostly minority casts a handful of times before, helping give Netflix’s “Beef” with its predominantly Asian American lineup a genuine shot to take home the biggest prize.
“Beef” tied with “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” for the most nominations among all non-regular series programs with 13. It’s presently in the lead among Gold Derby voters in the limited series race with 16/5 combined odds. Its star Ali Wong is also in first place among limited lead actresses,...

Thanks to the massive success of the 1987 animated series "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles," toy companies and television networks were all looking for their own anthropomorphic crimefighting animal franchises in the late 1980s and early 1990s. And when they eventually found them, the results were wild. In the words of Guns N' Roses, "Welcome to the Jungle."
"Battletoads" was probably the most blatant ripoff. "Road Rovers" was another swing and a miss. "Swat Kats: The Radical Squadron" had a pretty awesome show, but the toy line didn't deliver as much as the cartoon. Then came "Wild West C.O.W.-Boys of Moo Mesa" and "Street Sharks," which excelled in both areas. But when "Biker Mice From Mars" premiered in 1993, both the show and the toys stood head and shoulders above the rest (but always just below Tmnt). The little kid version of me went nuts for this show, as well as the action...

“A shoulder we all stood on,” tweeted actor Colman Domingo today.
A prolific character actor on screen and stage, and a pioneer in the representation of Black actors on the Off Broadway and Broadway scenes, Alice is perhaps most widely known to TV audiences for her two-season run as a main character on NBC’s Cosby Show spin-off A Different World, in which she played dorm director Leticia “Lettie” Bostic. In 2003, she featured prominently in The Matrix Revolutions, portraying The Oracle, who imparts words of wisdom to Keanu Reeves’ Neo.

Military ensemble pictures work well when the excitement is all about the job and working under pressure: Charlton Heston, Stacy Keach, Ned Beatty and even David Carradine are excellent in this credible story about a near-impossible rescue of submariners trapped 1400 feet below. It’s a solid Navy disaster scenario, unusually authentic and realistic — until the dramatists require actor Ronny Cox to act like an emotional idiot. Those U.K. disc producers do it justice with some excellent extras, including a piece with a Navy specialist who worked with the rescue craft seen in the movie… and who later became a well-known film historian, author and film series organizer.

Another turn of the dial, another vampire tale for the folks at home; TV sure did like them bloodsuckers, and for good reason – it’s generally the same story that everyone knows, and you don’t really need more than some fake chompers. A few wrinkles to the tale certainly helps to be set apart, as does a strong creative presence; and when you do those things, you end up with something like I, Desire (1982), a fun little neck biter that’s different just enough to stand out.
Originally broadcast November 15th as part of The ABC Monday Night Movie, I, Desire had to use its wooden stakes on M*A*S*H and Newhart over on CBS, while NBC trotted out their Monday Night at the Movies. I’m pretty sure I would have begged my folks to watch the vampire flick over Hawkeye if I had been given the chance.

It’s always fun to peruse the impressive career of writer-director Michael Crichton, whose brilliant, commercially savvy ideas so often hit the mark. He even invented a plausibly credible dinosaur movie. This 1981 thriller may be his least coherent show, with too many screwy ideas and a supporting cast that needed better direction. Yet it has the winning combination of Albert Finney and Susan Dey, and some very original thriller elements.

The Tick, out now on Amazon Prime Video, is huge fun. Here's how the show achieves what its creator envisioned 21 years ago...
In 1994, I was about to be a freshman in high school. Despite being “too old” for cartoons, there wasn’t really anything else on television on Saturday mornings while I was waiting for wrestling to show up on my television screen. I remember most of the cartoons I saw only in the vaguest terms: the creepy face of Louie Anderson’s gargoyle animated child or a screaming purple cat. I know the name of both shows because I looked them up prior to writing this article, but I couldn’t tell you anything about them. However, one show I watched regularly in the mid to late 90s stuck with me well into adulthood, and that’s the 1994-96 animated version of The Tick.

Stanley Kubrick’s Vietnam war masterpiece “Full Metal Jacket” will open this year’s HollyShorts Film Festival, care of an opening night celebration on August 10. The opening night festivities will coincide with the iconic feature’s thirtieth anniversary — the film first bowed back in June of 1987 — and star Matthew Modine will be on hand to participate in a special post-screening Q&A.
Kubrick’s instant classic depiction of Vietnam — and really, war in general — was based on Gutav Hasford’s novel “The Short-Timers,” which Kubrick sparked to after seeking material for a war film for years. The film stars Modine, Adam Baldwin, Vincent D’Onofrio, R. Lee Ermey, Dorian Harewood, Arliss Howard, Kevyn Major Howard, and Ed O’Ross and follows a motley crew of Marines as they train for and eventually go to battle in Vietnam. The film was a lauded success, and earned an Oscar nod for Best Adapted Screenplay.

With just under forty years of experience on stage, screen, and the recording booth, Dorian Harewood has been there, done that. It could be argued that he was Denzel before Denzel, with his handsome looks, charming presence, and deep voice. Throughout… Continue Reading →...

Joan Collins in 'The Bitch': Sex tale based on younger sister Jackie Collins' novel. Author Jackie Collins dead at 77: Surprisingly few film and TV adaptations of her bestselling novels Jackie Collins, best known for a series of bestsellers about the dysfunctional sex lives of the rich and famous and for being the younger sister of film and TV star Joan Collins, died of breast cancer on Sept. 19, '15, in Los Angeles. The London-born (Oct. 4, 1937) Collins was 77. Collins' tawdry, female-centered novels – much like those of Danielle Steel and Judith Krantz – were/are immensely popular. According to her website, they have sold more than 500 million copies in 40 countries. And if the increasingly tabloidy BBC is to be believed (nowadays, Wikipedia has become a key source, apparently), every single one of them – 32 in all – appeared on the New York Times' bestseller list. (Collins' own site claims that a mere 30 were included.) Sex...

After Sunday's "Homeland" season finale, it's clear Season 3 will be a very different beast, which executive producers Alex Gansa and Howard Gordon confirmed Monday in a conference call with members of the media.
Season 1 ended with only Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) believing in Nicholas Brody's (Damian Lewis) guilt and the Season 2 finale of "Homeland" ended with her as the only one who believes in his innocence. "That was the broad architecture of the year," Gansa said.
How Brody will figure into Season 3 is "very much up in the air," Gansa said. "We had a much clearer picture" of what the first two seasons would be than what the third will be, he said. Will Brody recede into the background now that he's on the run? "I think it's an open question," said Gansa, who added that a change in Brody's level of involvement was "inevitable."
"We've told a significant part of that story,...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read on if you have not yet seen Season 2, Episode 10 of Showtime's "Homeland," titled "Broken Hearts," which aired on December 2.
As Season 2 of "Homeland" enters its home stretch, the pace is amping up, and Sunday's episode may have been one of the Showtime drama's most shocking hours yet.
After Carrie Mathison (Claire Danes) was abducted, Congressman Nicholas Brody (Damian Lewis) helped terrorist Abu Nazir (Navid Neghaban) kill Vice President William Walden (Jamey Sheridan). By assassinating Walden, both Nazir and Brody may feel like they've finally avenged the death of Nazir's son Issa -- but does helping hack Walden's pacemaker mean that Brody has turned for good? Will Carrie protect Brody or turn him in? And just how many more twists can be packed into the tangled, obsessive story of Carrie, Brody and the CIA?
You may also be wondering if pacemakers can really be hacked,...

Full Metal Jacket, the celebrated Kubrick film that delivers a gripping and scathing look at war and the military “process” is now available in an Anniversary edition Blu-Ray book, and I’ve got a copy for you to win.
Popularity and awards aside, Full Metal Jacket (like most Kubrick films) left a clear mark that became more than just an iconic moment of the culture. Love, hate, or indifference, you couldn’t help talking about it, and it was a film that pushed the collective sense of what films can do to such a degree that we live in its wake still.
The release is a must-own for fans, and has a fair number of things to brag about, but it loses a few points for not offering a little more in the way of new material. The newly remastered Blu-Ray may be all a lot of people, and it delivers on looks,...

Toronto -- Newly resurrected rap label Death Row Records is expanding into film production.
Death Row Records CEO Lara Lavi said her new Death Row Films division is set to shoot "Sons 2 The Grave" in Toronto this October, with Tonya Lee Williams, Dorian Harewood, K.C. Collins ("Flashpoint") and child actor Cameron Miles Jones on board.
The indie hood drama, written and produced by Lynn Stoltz and near to signing a director, features Collins as a young basketball phenom returning to an embattled inner city ghetto after two gunshots cut short his dream of an NBA career.
"This film embodies what we're trying to do with Death Row, to tell human stories that don't always have happy endings, and that allow us to learn from violence and disenfranchised lives, but not glorify it," said Lavi.
WIDEawake Entertainment Group, Lavi's Toronto-based shingle, acquired Death Row Records out of bankruptcy last January for $18 million.

It's always nice to receive emails from people who are making a difference come election time: With elections coming up, I think it’s important that everyone get involved with helping our generation to vote. I was lucky enough to work with a great group of people (non-paid and for no fame) and a short film was made with actors and industry people. Instead to asking for people to vote for a certain person, we’re asking that people just vote. It has a lot of up and coming actors such as Brittany Snow, Stephen Sowan, and Shiloh Fernandez not to mention older favorites like Erika Alexander and Dorian Harewood. I love what you're doing with the site and the fact that you're giving new actors a chance to be praised for their work. - - - - - - While tMF will never post anything about the presidential candidates or do a political post,...
