The Group A finals took place on “The Masked Singer” Wednesday, April 17 on “Queen Night.” After singing their hearts out for panelists Robin Thicke, Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Ken Jeong and Rita Ora, the bottom two acts were eliminated. First to go was Ugly Sweater, whose rendition of “I Want to Break Free” put him in last place. The soulful ball of yarn ripped off his mask and revealed himself as Grammy-nominated music legend Charlie Wilson.
“I had a great time here,” he told host Nick Cannon during his unmasked interview. “The fans are great!” Earlier in the episode Ugly Sweater hinted at giving Nick dating advice, and people wanted to know exactly what was said. “I can’t say it on TV, I don’t want to be bleeped,” he joked before adding, “12 kids? Come on, he know exactly what I told him to do.”

The Beatles’ songs from A to Z are a study of how the band changed the course of pop music. The songwriting, melodies, instrumentals, and recording technqiues established the band as among the most influential in music history. But for all their success, The Beatles remained active for a relatively short period of time.
In 10 years, The Beatles released 14 albums in what’s considered their core catalog. It includes just over 200 songs from John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr. Some are much more memorable than others, but every Beatles song from A to Z has its own story and interesting facts to keep listeners entertained even when the music stops.

Lionel Richie has been very emotional lately, but he wants to reassure everyone that he’s okay.
According to Richie, it’s just been a heady experience to look back nearly 40 years and relive all the wondrous and chaotic memories of writing and recording “We Are the World” for the new Netflix documentary “The Greatest Night in Pop.”
“Every segment of this journey, I cry,” Richie said at the Variety Studio presented by Audible at Sundance Film Festival, where the film made its world premiere. “It just brings tears to my eyes because some of us are not here anymore. Also it was our innocence. We actually were making a difference, so to see the naive version of ourselves, when we actually had an aha moment that we might take all this celebrity and change the world … I’m just emotional about it because I get to watch my kid being born again.

“I didn’t really know much about the making of the song,” admits The Greatest Night in Pop director Bao Nguyen of 1985’s star-studded Ethiopian famine relief hit “We Are the World.” “You just make these assumptions about how things are made because it just happens. But when you think now of 46 great artists getting together to make that, it would be really impossible for that to happen now.”
Whether or not the superstars of 2024 could or would come together like the hit makers of the Reagan Era did in America and the UK almost 40 years ago is debatable. What is a fact is that Nguyen’s latest documentary is debuting today at the Sundance Film Festival just a few days short of when U.S.A. for Africa recorded the Lionel Richie and Michael Jackson penned tune in a studio in Los Angeles. John Legend named his favorite Beatles song and he made a good choice. His explanation, however, was awful. He said a certain Beatles song stuck out to him because it was adapted into a movie. That movie was so terrible George Harrison publicly attacked it.
John Legend’s favorite Beatles song is from ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’
During a 2009 interview with Cleveland.com, Legend was asked to name his favorite song by The Beatles. He picked the title track from Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. While that tune isn’t as acclaimed as “Yesterday” or “Strawberry Fields Forever,” it boasts a catchy hard-rock riff and some of the Fab Four’s trademarked British humor.
“That sticks out because of the movie,” Legend said. “Everything they did … incredible talent, man. It’s just amazing how great they were, how they influenced our culture, and how the music still stands up today.

The trailer for Netflix’s ‘The Greatest Night in Pop’ explores behind the scenes of creating 1985’s ‘We Are the World’.
Putting Soundcloud rappers & TikTok stars together does not have the same impact as what Quincy Jones, Michael Jackson, and Lionel Richie created in 1985 with “We Are the World,” one of the best pop-cultural records ever put into the wild.
Raising funds for the USA for Africa, the three assembled an eclectic group of music’s biggest talents, regardless of genre, and asked everyone to sing together for a greater cause. And now, it’s the subject of a massive documentary, The Greatest Night in Pop, which Netflix released a trailer recently.

Netflix has shared the trailer for an upcoming documentary about the making of the 1985 charity single “We Are the World.”
Directed by Bao Nguyen, The Greatest Night in Pop tells the story of how 46 of music’s biggest stars came together in a single day to record one song that would become a global sensation in the truest sense of the phrase. As Lionel Richie explains in the trailer, he and Michael Jackson co-wrote “We Are the World” after Harry Belafonte called him directly to ask if he could write a song to raise money for hunger relief in Africa.

One of the biggest pop culture moments of the 80s was when a large group of pop artists came together for a special one-time song dedicated to raising awareness and helping to end famine in Africa. That song, “We Are the World,” was amazingly stacked with talent, including Michael Jackson, Lionel Richie, Tina Turner, Bob Dylan, Cyndi Lauper, Bruce Springsteen, Harry Belafonte, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, and Huey Lewis. A documentary from Netflix recounts the story of how the song came together with The Greatest Night in Pop. The film is also scheduled to screen at the Sundance Film Festival this year, with Lionel Richie in tow.
Netflix’s description of the documentary reads,
“On January 25, 1985, dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a studio in Los Angeles, checked their egos at the door and recorded a song to benefit African famine relief that would alter global pop culture history.

"Let's get this party started." Netflix has revealed the first official trailer for a music history documentary film called The Greatest Night in Pop, directed by doc filmmaker Bao Nguyen (of the Bruce Lee doc Be Water previously). This film was a last minute addition to the exciting Sundance 2024 line-up, playing at the prestigious film festival in a few weeks before it debuts on Netflix at the end of January. In 1985, 46 music icons, including Lionel Richie, Michael Jackson, Bruce Springsteen, Cyndi Lauper, Diana Ross, and Stevie Wonder, came together for the most star-studded recording session in history. This is the untold story of the legendary global pop song "We Are the World" (listen here) recorded to help bring more support to African famine relief — which very nearly didn't happen. Many of the artists who were there that legendary evening -- Richie, Springsteen, Lauper, Smokey Robinson, Kenny Loggins, Dionne Warwick, and...

The Beatles‘ “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” was originally by Smokey Robinson’s band The Miracles. Robinson has no memory of hearing that cover for the first time. It left an impression on him anyway. Sveral other major artists recorded “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” as well.
Smokey Robinson said The Beatles’ ‘You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me’ always feels new
During a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, Robinson was asked what it was like to hear The Beatles’ “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me” for the first time. “I don’t recall the first time, but every time for me is the first time on that, man,” he replied. “It was just a joy.

The Beatles‘ songs are so great even Smokey Robinson is in awe of them. He named one of his favorite Beatles songs. Incidentally, The Miracles performed the tune on television. The song in question was much more popular in the United States than it was in the United Kingdom.
Smokey Robinson sang 1 Beatles song on ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’
During a 2023 interview with Rolling Stone, Robinson was asked to name his favorite song by The Beatles. “They wrote so many great songs,” he replied. “I think one of my favorites, off the top of my head, would be ‘Yesterday.’ I used to sing ‘Yesterday’ with The Miracles. In fact, we sang it on The Ed Sullivan Show.” A cover of “Yesterday” appeared on The Miracles’ album Special Occasion. The cover features a string section that sounds nothing like The Beatles’, as well as some beautiful harmonies from The Miracles.

Exclusive: Netflix has set a January 29 streaming premiere date for The Greatest Night in Pop, a feature doc just announced as world premiering at the Sundance Film Festival on the 19th of this month.
Directed by award winner Bao Nguyen (Be Water), the film takes viewers back to January 25, 1985, when dozens of the biggest names in music convened at a Los Angeles studio and checked their egos at the door amidst the recording of a song to benefit African famine relief — one that would alter global pop culture history. Chronicled in the doc is the massive undertaking to assemble the world’s most impressive supergroup in a time before cell phones and email. That group of artists, led by the song’s co-writers and two of the most significant musicians of the 20th century — Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie — came from different worlds but united to record “We Are the World.

The satellite radio giant SiriusXM is planning an aggressive push for a larger slice of the streaming music space, launching a new version of its platform on mobile devices and in cars; lowering its subscription price; and debuting a slew of new channels and shows as it seeks greater market share among younger consumers.
Focusing on the “next generation” of subscribers is a focal point of SiriusXM’s strategy, the company’s CEO Jennifer Witz tells The Hollywood Reporter in an interview. A big part of that is shifting the company’s streaming strategy from being a complement to the in-car offering to something that is compelling in its own right.
“We have a lot of our consumers, our subscribers streaming today outside of the car, and the app was originally designed basically as a companion to what you have in the car,” Witz says. “This is really our first...

Gabrielle’s Angel Foundation for Cancer Research was created in 1996, when Grammy-nominated songwriter and philanthropist Denise Rich lost her daughter Gabrielle, a vibrant 27-year-old actress and Hodgkin’s lymphoma survivor, to acute myelogenous leukaemia. Gabrielle’s mother and sisters, Daniella Rich Kilstock and Ilona Rich Schachter, believed the best way to honour Gabrielle’s memory was to create a Foundation that would fund the best and brightest scientific researchers with the hope that less toxic treatments, and ultimately a cure, might be discovered.

Exclusive: APA’s Head of Music Bruce Solar is among a few music agents who are leaving the agency. A replacement for Solar will be announced shortly.
“In the past year we have added 21 agents including many that joined our touring department. This past week we notified a handful of agents, most of whose contracts were expiring in 2023, that we weren’t going to renew their deals in order to give them time to find their next opportunity,” a rep for APA said in a statement to Deadline. “We appreciate all that they have contributed to APA and wish them the very best going forward.”
APA’s music/touring operation has been going through a transition. In addition to the rapid expansion with the hires of senior agents from ICM, CAA and UTA who brought more than 200 artists, the department also promoted six in February.

Soul and R&b legend Charlie Wilson delivered a delightful, career-spanning set in the latest installment of NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.
Wilson, a host of musicians, and a cadre of backup vocalists squeezed into the NPR offices for the performance, which opened an apt fitting introduction: “Charlie, Last Name Wilson,” the beatific title-track from Wilson’s 2005 album. After that, Wilson dipped into his deep catalog of classics and performed “Computer Love,” the 1986 single he made with Dayton funk greats Zapp and singer Shirley Murdock.
