Phenomena is a substantially different movie depending on how you first saw it. Audiences in its native Italy were able to see the original 116-minute film as director Dario Argento intended for its initial release in 1985. That cut was pruned down to 110 minutes for international release. In America, however, New Line Cinema cut the picture to 83 minutes before putting it out under the title Creepers in 1986. Finding its audience in the VHS rental market, this was the only version available in the US until DVD came around.
Each version has its advantages and disadvantages. The original integral cut contains everything, but it drags a bit in the middle and there are a few moments that were never dubbed into English. The international version is a bit tighter, mostly trimming frames and sacrificing only a few lines of dialogue. Those who grew up with the Creepers cut may prefer its punchier pace,...

New Short Film, Grummy, Tackles A Sensitive Subject with Beautiful Imagery and Amazing Storytelling: "Married writer/director team Micheline Pitt and R.H. Norman combine forces in the dark fantasy short film, Grummy, an autobiographic tale of Pitt’s childhood.
Inspired by the imagination that she escaped to during her own abusive childhood, Pitt and her filmmaker husband Norman share a heartbreaking yet poetic tale of a young girl whose stuffed creature, “Grummy,” brings a new world to life during her most vulnerable moments. This dark fairy tale is an expression of Pitt’s own sexual abuse survival story and a love note to the monsters and fantastic worlds that helped her survive.

The unrestrained crime-shock transgressors Perdita and Romero cut a path of lust, cult ritual madness and amoral nastiness across the U.S./Mexico border. Kidnapping, murder and theft are among their printable crimes. Álex de Iglesia’s beautifully produced slice of post- Tarantino excess arrives in a completely uncut original version.

Over the years I have had the privilege to be in the same space as composer extraordinare Simon Boswell a few times. Near as I recall the first time I saw Boswell perform live was when he was in Montreal at Fantasia for the screening of his friend Richard Stanley's documentary The Other World back in 2013. It was two years later when we would officially meet at Morbido Fest in Puebla. The intimate environment of Morbido pretty much forced us into friendship at that time and we've been running into each other, along with his partner the absolutely lovely Lola (LG) White, and their bandmates in his band The And ever since. The last time was at the last Morbido Fest we were...

A 25-year-old secret – albeit poorly kept and widely known – can finally be confirmed: Yes, that is Pink Floyd’s David Gilmour playing one of his trademark guitar solos during a pivotal scene in the 1995 film/techie time capsule Hackers.
Sometime in The Division Bell era, Gilmour visited the home of Guy Pratt, Pink Floyd’s touring bassist since Momentarily Lapse of Reason, while the bassist was working on music for the 1995 movie about teenage computer whizzes — including Angelina Jolie in her first big-screen role — “hacking the world.”

As the calendar changes from October to November, Mexican horror fans will ascend for the twelfth year on Morbido Fest, a Mexico City-based festival dedicated to all things macabre, organized and executed by Morbido Group CEO and founder Pablo Guisa Koestinger.
This year’s festival will kick off Oct. 30 with a spectacle grander in its ambition than any Morbido inauguration before. Taking place within the Esperanza Iris City theater, more than 60 artists will perform six choreographed musical numbers with Guisa taking the reigns as master of ceremonies. Those familiar with Guisa and his public persona won’t be surprised to hear that his opening night wardrobe alone includes eight costumes, with more to come in the following days.

There are special moments when you are at film festivals, when the organizers pull out all the stops to ensure that you have not only a great time but memories that will last forever. My Simon Boswell memories first started at Morbido back in 2012 when they had a Richard Stanley retrospective screening of Dust Devil and they planned a song from the soundtrack while a sand artist did this wonderful show for us. Then, at Fantasia when Stanley's doc L'Autre Monde screened, Mr. Boswell was in town and played a short acoustic set before the screening. I thought my indirect experiences with the recording artist had peaked. Until Friday night. Simon and his band, The And, were in town for a show of some of his...

Special Mention: The Last Wave
Directed by Peter Weir
Written by Tony Morphett and Peter Weir
Australia, 1977
Genre: Psychological Thriller
The tagline reads, “The Occult Forces. The Ritual Murder. The Sinister Storms. The Prophetic Dreams. The Last Wave.”
Peter Weir follows up on his critically acclaimed masterpiece Picnic at Hanging Rock with this visually striking and totally engrossing surrealist psychological thriller. Much like Picnic, The Last Wave is built around a mystery that may have a supernatural explanation. And like many Peter Weir movies, The Last Wave explores the conflict between two radically different cultures- in this case, that of Aboriginal Australians and the white Europeans.
It is about a white lawyer, David Burton (Richard Chamberlain), whose seemingly normal life is rattled after he takes on a pro bono legal aid case to defend a group of Aborigines from a murder charge in Sydney. The mystery within the mystery surrounding...

Special Mention: Death Proof
Written and directed by Quentin Tarantino
USA, 2007
Genre: Slasher
The obvious reference points of Death Proof are such movies as Vanishing Point, Roadgames, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry, and even Spielberg’s Duel – but Death Proof is influenced by more than just vehicular horror. Tarantino’s homage to the road-fury genre is really two movies in one, offering two versions of the same story about two separate groups of beautiful women who are stalked by a homicidal maniac who uses his car (his weapon of choice) to terrorize and eventually kill his victims. Death Proof can easily be viewed as two slasher films, with the second half acting as a sequel, offering new, beautiful victims for the murderous Stuntman Mike (Kurt Russell) to terrorize. It’s a grim stalk-and-slash picture with a blaring commentary of female empowerment. Replace the typical sharp edged blade with a car, and...

Special Mention: Shock Corridor
Written and directed by Samuel Fuller
USA, 1963
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Shock Corridor stars Peter Breck as Johnny Barrett, an ambitious reporter who wants to expose a killer hiding out at the local insane asylum. In order to solve the case, he must pretend to be insane so they have him committed. Once in the asylum, Barrett sets to work, interrogating the other patients and keeping a close eye on the staff. But it’s difficult to remain a sane man living in an insane place, and the closer Barrett gets to the truth, the closer he gets to insanity.
Shock Corridor is best described as an anti-establishment drama that at times is surprisingly quite funny despite the dark material. The film deals with some timely issues of the era, specifically the atom bomb, anti-communism, and racism. It features everything from a raving female love-crazed nympho ward,...

This is finally happening, and I can’t wait. It has been a really long time since I have seen Lord of Illusions. Fresh off of the Director’s Cut of Nightbreed, I could definitely use some more remastered Clive Barker films in my life. Scream Factory have announced the extras that will be included in their Collector’s Edition of the film. We get a Clive Barker commentary, a behind-the-scenes featurette, some rare on-set footage, deleted scenes with Clive Barker commentary, and likely more. I’ve noticed that they usually undersell the bonus content on their discs, mostly due to space limitations, I would assume. This is shaping up to be a fantastic release, with a new transfer, and what looks to be a generous amount of extras. The release hits shelves on the 16th of December. You can pre-order a copy for yourself either on amazon, or the Shout!

One Way Static is now taking pre-orders for two October vinyl releases. The first - and this is the way that get my little black heart pumping - is Simon Boswell's score for Stagefright (or Stage Fright or Stagefright: Aquarius or Bloody Bird or Deliria - you pick the title you prefer) by Michele Soavi. Those in the U.S. can pre-order this one through Light in the Attic.

Locked inside a theater overnight with a murderous madman, a musical’s cast will have no trouble portraying real fear, but this type of method acting could be the death of them all. In 1987′s StageFright, the actors unknowingly performing beside a murderer in an owl mask could break a lot more than a leg in perhaps their final performance on this earth. The Blu-ray upgrade of StageFright‘s uncut and uncensored camera negative is making its Us debut this fall from Blue Underground.
Available to pre-order starting on August 12th and officially hitting shelves on September 23rd, Blue Underground is coupling StageFright‘s high definition transfer with a host of bonus features and some glass-shattering cover art.

In order to wrap up my Twitch coverage of Fantaspoa 2014, I'm sharing the festival's official video recap, which is a very nice way to get a taste of what happens "behind the scenes" and when you bring together Lloyd Kaufman, Richard Stanley, Simon Boswell, Bruce Labruce, and the Toxic Avenger! Amazing things happen, for sure. The video was shot and edited by Emiliano Romero, director of Topos, and it also features footage of Kaufman's Make Your Own Damn Movie Masterclass, some of the Q&A sessions, the great hosts and directors of Fantaspoa (Joao Fleck and Nicolas Tonsho) in action, and a brief narration by Stanley himself. You can watch the video below. Also, below are the reviews, interviews and features I wrote for the...

For that cross section of readers that call themselves cinephiles and vinyl collectors, a real treat this holiday season, or any for that matter, is no doubt Simon Boswell's remastered score to Richard Stanley's seminal cult classic Hardware. Boswell's eclectic musicianship, spiraling from his slide guitar theme to synthy soundscapes, more traditional orchestral arrangements and FX infused experiments, was an integral part to Stanley's post-apocalyptic visions in Hardware. Available through Boswell directly is this double edition featuring the original soundtrack, in addition to the score with never before heard versions and takes, plus voice overs with Stanley reading from the unproduced Hardware 2 script. There's also commentary for each track by Boswell, liner notes by Stanley, and new artwork by Graham Humprhey. The vinyl is...

Every year, we here at Sound On Sight celebrate the month of October with 31 Days of Horror; and every year, I update the list of my favourite horror films ever made. Last year, I released a list that included 150 picks. This year, I’ll be upgrading the list, making minor alterations, changing the rankings, adding new entries, and possibly removing a few titles. I’ve also decided to publish each post backwards this time for one reason: the new additions appear lower on my list, whereas my top 50 haven’t changed much, except for maybe in ranking. I am including documentaries, short films and mini series, only as special mentions – along with a few features that can qualify as horror, but barely do.

There are a handful of directors I would do anything to see working again. I'm not necessarily talking about retired filmmakers, but those who appear to be floating in the ether. Don't Look Now and Performance director Nicolas Roeg is one of them. His movies still haunt. Michele Soavi is also on that list. There are moments in the filmmaker's body of work that threatened to trump the Italian horror masters — directors he actually worked with, including Dario Argento (on Tenebrae, Phenomena and Opera) and Lamberto Bava (on A Blade in the Dark and Demons). Soavi even made the crossover to mainstream cinema as second unit director on Terry Gilliam's The Brothers Grimm and The Adventures of Baron Munchausen. As Soavi came into his own as a director, he edged closer to brilliance. The Church was an atmospheric twist on Lamberto Bava's Demons series, but his 1994 film Cemetery Man (a.

Co-festival director Mitch Davis [pictured] talks to Screen about this year’s Fantasia, which wrapped yesterday [Aug 7].
Having announced record attendance figures for its 17th edition [see separate story here], Fantasia International Film Festival co-festival director Mitch Davis has hailed this year as “exceptionally strong”.
Talking to Screen, Davis (also co-director of international programming at the festival) said that almost every film of its 130-strong lineup managed to prosper. “The commercial blockbuster titles were expectedly big but never at the expense of the left field discoveries or low budget indies, which frequently screened to capacity crowds as well.”
He continued: “Seeing good filmmaking come to life in front of audiences who truly connect with it, and love it as much as we do, is an ultimate reward for any curating team.”
Recent years at the festival have seen it expand its industry element with the introduction of its Fantasia Industry Rendez-Vous; as with its audience numbers, attendance at the...

The Fantasia International Film Festival held its annual press conference this morning at the Cinémathèque Québécoise in downtown Montreal, hosted by many of the regular festival programmers and planners, among them general directors Marc Lamothe and Mitch Davis, who both represent the heart and backbone of the event, Isabelle Gauvreau, director of Québec short films programming, Simon Laperrière, director of the ‘Camera Lucida’ selections and King Wei-Chu and Nicolas Archambault, directors of Asian programming, just to name a few.
A few of the major announcements from the first few waves were reiterated, such as Takashi Miike’s Shield of Straw as the opening film and Edgar Wright’s The World’s End as the closing movie. One previously unmentioned bit of tantalizing information shared with the press this morning is that in addition to director Edgar Wright hosting, so will co-star Nick Frost!

Marks the second consecutive year a Takashi Miike film has opened Montreal’s genre film festival.
Takashi Miike’s Shield of Straw, which screened in competition at Cannes, is to open the 17th edition of Montreal’s Fantasia International Film Festival (July 18 - August 6).
Miike’s crime thriller receives its North American premiere at Fantasia and continues the long relationship between the director and festival.
Last year, Fantasia opened with Miike’s For Love’s Sake and the festival’s 1997 screening of Fudoh marked the first time a film by the director had ever been shown in North America.
The festival will also host the world premiere of 24 Exposures, from mumblecore director Joe Swanberg. The film stars Adam Wingard as a fetish photographer whose models begin to turn up dead while Simon Barrett plays a cop tasked with investigating him.

Lamberto Bava cut his teeth in cinema working with giallo legend Mario Bava, his father, and alongside Dario Argento and Ruggero Deodato. Italian horror fans have a special place in their hearts for his two Demons films and the underrated A Blade in the Dark contains some of his finer work. The comparisons are unfair, but Bava has never displayed the visual prowess of mentor Argento, his famous father, or even collaborator Michele Soavi. He does, however, deliver an occasionally entertaining film — even if the greatest moments are derivative of the masters.
Delirium is a late giallo, which must have been somewhat strange for fans during its 1987 release. Curvaceous red telephones, harbingers of doom for the red-lipped women answering them, were replaced with clunky cordless phones. The shoulder pads, hair, ridiculous wardrobe, and decor are epically '80s — but 26 years later, it works. Sales are booming for Pussycat Magazine, but...

Synapse is planning to bring Demons and Demons 2 to Blu-ray later this year and have revealed new details on an upcoming limited edition steelbook release:
“This year, we’ve decided to do Limited Edition Steelbooks for both Demons and Demons 2, with exclusive new cover art by the amazing Wes Benscoter. While the street date is expected to be around November, anyone who orders the Limited Editions will be getting theirs shipped as soon as they are done and available (we’ll ship them as soon as they come in to our offices, regardless of street date). These Le Steelbooks will Not be available in stores and 3000 units will be available direct from our website right here at www.synapse-films.com. Once the units are sold out, they will no longer be available. These are One Pressing Only items. Once the Steelbooks are gone, they are gone forever and will Not be repressed.

From the Synapse Films Website
We wanted to keep everyone updated on Demons and Demons 2, and we’re pleased to announce a little surprise with these two titles. Synapse Films has been approached by Scanavo, the makers of the Steelbook cases for Blu-ray and DVD, and we have decided to do something a little special for the fans.
As many of you know, for the past few years, Synapse has done “Limited Edition” versions of some of our titles near the holidays. We did the limited edition Blu of Intruder with the workprint (sold out in 3 weeks), and last year we did the limited edition Blu of The Definitive Document Of The Dead...
