Kenneth Huang was known for his particular taste in wine. Whether in his favorite corner of Cut, the Michelin-starred steakhouse at the Beverly Wilshire, or in the Peninsula Shanghai, Huang would summon a bottle of Opus One to the table. He would tell guests that he had a private reserve of the Napa Valley vineyard’s 2011 vintage, which retails for up to $2,000 a case. Someone who regularly dined with the financier says she drank so much Opus One that she got sick of the bourgeois Bordeaux.
If the wine was Huang’s signature, it was a footnote in a picture rendered to create a specific impression. An outsider in a town familiar with cautionary tales about Chinese riches, Huang was performative about his wealth in a way that put Hollywood power players at ease. He would allow them to think: if this man puts studio executives on private jets to...

The Amityville Horror (1979)
The Movie Says: A family moves into a home that had been the site of a grisly mass murder, and soon realize the house is incredibly haunted. The movie is based on the bestselling 'non-fiction' book.
In Real Life: After the previous inhabitants of a certain Amityville house were murdered, the Lutz family moved in – though they were worried about making the mortgage payments on the $80,000 home (just under half a million dollars today).
The idea of writing a book about the house being 'haunted' post-murder was actually proposed by the killer's lawyer, who thought it would make a pile of cash.
Long story short: the book got published and sold 11 million copies, the Lutzes got rich off of their lie, and nobody else who lived in the house ever experienced paranormal activity. So 'The Amityville Horror' isn't based on a true story so much...

Steven Spielberg’s Catch Me If You Can told the maybe-true-to-life story of Frank Abagnale Jr., a con man who had spent most of his life trying to evade the police on various charges. But while Abagnale wasn’t always successful — he spent time in American, French, and Swedish prisons — his exploits made for some very entertaining stories. Leonardo DiCaprio played him in Catch Me If You Can; at the time of the film’s release, DiCaprio talked about how he’d built up quite an admiration for Abagnale’s natural acting skills. Berlin has been the talk of the town ever since the show was released on Netflix. Shows of this genre bring back a lot of memories that allow the audience to stay on the edge of their seat and soak in the stories of the crime, which mostly glorify them. Some films are comedy heist dramas that justify the act, but there is a reason why the word ‘comedy’ is part of the genre’s name. Here is a list of movies you can watch if you like Berlin, the latest Netflix spin on the very popular Money Heist.

As the ongoing battles in state legislatures over classroom curricula indicate, history – or at least the curation of which stories to teach, and from which perspectives – is subjective. So too is Hollywood’s rich tradition of biopics, which imply to audiences whose lives are worthy of immortalizing on film. Whether in textbooks or onscreen, most of the protagonists of our shared cultural history have belonged to the same demographic: Elvis, Oppenheimer, Jobs, Zuckerberg, Hughes. Those individuals were undoubtedly impactful, but Hollywood has also devoted resources to spotlighting relatively lesser-known white men, such as Jordan Belfort, Frank Abagnale and Hugh Glass (and that’s just one movie star’s filmography).
Biopics about people of color exist, of course, particularly when it comes to undeniable icons like Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali. But one community – the second largest racial or ethnic group in the country – has been particularly underrepresented when it comes...

Catch Me If You Can wasn’t projected to be one of Stephen Spielberg’s bigger films, but having two leading stars like Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks drew audiences into theaters. The film turned out to be surprisingly engaging, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats. DiCaprio made an incredibly charismatic con man, and Hanks was perfect as the stuffy, irritated agent who kept letting the criminal slip through his fingers. Many fans were surprised to learn that the slippery criminal was actually a real person.

Leonardo DiCaprio once worked alongside Steven Spielberg in the 2002 hit Catch Me if You Can. The film saw DiCaprio being paired up with Jennifer Garner, who might not have been involved in the film if not for the actor.

Garner initially had DiCaprio to thank for her role in the movie, as her scene wasn’t in the original Catch Me If You Can script. Portraying Abagnale in the flick, DiCaprio read the con-man’s semi-autobiography to prepare for the role. During his read-through, the Departed actor stumbled onto a part in the book that left him in tears.
“I learned about this episode from Frank’s life in preparation for the role, it is mentioned in his autobiography and audio seminars,” DiCaprio once said according to Vk.

The trailer for Hulu’s doc The Jewel Thief, out July 13 on the streamer, asks this and other questions as it pertains to the life and crimes of Gerald Blanchard, with Blanchard on hand to answer them.
Landon Van Soest directs the doc that, according to the film’s logline, tells “the unbelievable first-hand account of Gerald Blanchard, one of the most creative, calculating and accomplished criminal masterminds in modern history. Two unlikely Winnipeg detectives track Blanchard across the globe as he perpetrates a series of increasingly elaborate heists in a quest for fame and notoriety through a life of crime.”
Blanchard is best known for stealing a Star of Empress Sisi, one of the diamond-and-pearl hair ornaments worn by Elisabeth of Bavaria, the Empress of Austria. He also robbed multiple banks and was wanted by Interpol.

In Steven Spielberg's slinky caper "Catch Me if You Can," Leonardo DiCaprio plays Frank Abagnale, a teenage con artist who poses as a doctor, a lawyer, and a Pan Am co-pilot while forging checks. DiCaprio is exceptional in the role, displaying the charm, playfulness, and ease that allowed Frank to carry through his impersonations, while also balancing his youthful naivete and vulnerability.
But "Catch Me if You Can" is a cat-and-mouse story, and the role of FBI Agent Carl Hanratty is just as important. In an interview with Roger Ebert, Spielberg explains how Tom Hanks ended up with the role:
"Tom had read the script as a writing sample and called me and Walter Parkes, the co-producer, and said 'Can I be in this movie? Do you think Steven would let me play the FBI agent? I really know who this guy is.' And then Tom called me and he said,...

It's fairly common for directors to spend years in-between projects, and one would think that finishing Stanley Kubrick's vision for 2001's "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" would call for a much-needed vacation. But in 2002, Steven Spielberg was on a roll. In the same year, he released two distinct films featuring two different, massive A-list stars. In June, Tom Cruise played the leading man in Spielberg's sci-fi blockbuster, "Minority Report." And in December, Leonardo DiCaprio took on the role of Frank Abagnale, Jr. in "Catch Me If You Can," an ambitious semi-biographical drama where DiCaprio played opposite Tom Hanks. Both films were critical and financial successes, becoming the 10th and 11th highest-grossing films of 2002 respectively.
Perhaps most impressively, in 2001, Spielberg was able to accomplish production on these films while writing term papers to earn his Bachelor's Degree from Cal State Long Beach, something he committed himself to doing to honor his...

Twenty years ago, one of the Christmas Day movie offerings was a new Steven Spielberg movie, a biographical crime movie called Catch Me If You Can. Based on the memoir by notorious con man Frank Abagnale Jr., it featured Leonardo DiCaprio in the starring role and Tom Hanks as the FBI agent trying to track him down. To prepare for the role, DiCaprio got to know the real Abagnale, and in meeting with him several times, he said he started to understand that Abagnale was a terrific actor himself and that, to play him, he needed to rely more on his own instinct.(Click on the media bar below to hear Leonardo DiCaprio) https://www.hollywoodoutbreak.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/12/Leonardo_DiCaprio_Catch_Me_If_you_Can_.mp3

"Catch Me If You Can" is one of those low-key Steven Spielberg classics that, had it been made by a lesser-known director, might've well been heralded as their masterpiece. Released in 2002, the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Frank William Abagnale Jr., a real-life con artist who spent his teen years masquerading as an airline pilot, a doctor, and a lawyer in the 1960s, all while forging checks to bankroll his escapades. The movie actually leaves out some of the wilder details in Abagnale's 1980 autobiographical book of the same name, like how he posed as a professor of sociology at Brigham Young University. And to think we were this close to getting a scene where DiCaprio's playboy swindler infiltrates the ranks of that primarily Mormon institution.
In truth, of course, the veracity of Abagnale's claims about teaching at Byu and his other activities has come under heavy scrutiny over the decades.

One trade secret that actors often use to prepare for biography pictures is to spend time with the person they are portraying. Leonardo DiCaprio secretly spent several days with Frank Abagnale to prepare for "Catch Me If You Can," and Tony Mendez took Ben Affleck to some old CIA hangout spots during his preparation for "Argo."
But what if the character you're playing died 140 years ago in the Wild West? That was a question Val Kilmer had to answer when he played Doc Holliday in the 1993 Western "Tombstone." In the beloved Western that helped immortalize the line "I'm your Huckleberry," Kilmer plays an ornery but well-meaning gunfighter. We called it the best performance of Val Kilmer's career.
There was plenty of literature about Doc Holliday at Kilmer's disposal but bringing a long-dead Western folk hero to life on the big screen was still a challenge. Thankfully, Kilmer had a secret...

Leonardo DiCaprio’s eternal youth and boyish looks may have helped his timeless stardom in Hollywood, but it only hurt his chances of starring in a James Dean biopic.
Director Michael Mann revealed he scrapped a “brilliant screenplay” about late “Rebel Without a Cause” actor Dean due to his dream lead, DiCaprio, looking too young for the part.

Steven Spielberg's 2002 film "Catch Me If You Can" is based on the true story of con artist Frank Abagnale Jr. In the film, Abagnale (Leonardo DiCaprio) leaves home as a teenager, following in his father's footsteps as a con man. Many of his crimes involved fraud, but it was his ability to transform himself into someone else that made Abagnale so unique. He impersonated people in professions so specialized no one would have ever dreamed possible that someone was faking it, including a doctor and a pilot. The FBI eventually caught Abagnale and convinced him to help them with their fraud and forgery cases.

As quickly as the summer movie season of 2021 seemed to come upon us, it’s already about to begin its long, languid slide through the dog days of August into fall. That’s not to say that theaters won’t still have plenty of interesting fare to encounter, with films like The Suicide Squad, Free Guy, Respect, Candyman and The Night House all on deck. Hopefully the other hideous sequel happening at the moment — Pandemic 2: The Delta Variant — won’t set any of these potential hits back.
In the spirit of keeping August entertaining, Netflix is rolling out a slew of new streaming additions as well, including an underrated Spielberg gem, fantastic teen comedies both old and new, a couple of stoner classics and perhaps the finest film from the canon of one of the modern era’s most revered directors. America’s Dad is no doubt going to be feeling very disappointed in some of his children right now after yesterday’s events, but many of Tom Hanks’ other ceremonial offspring have been putting their time to much better use by watching one of his best movies after it was recently added to the Netflix library.
The beloved actor doesn’t play the villain very often, and while it would admittedly be a stretch to describe Catch Me If You Can‘s Carl Hanratty as such, he’s most definitely the antagonist of the crime caper. The dogged veteran FBI agent tries his best to stop Leonardo DiCaprio’s Frank Abagnale Jr. in his tracks, but as is the case in a lot of similarly themed films, a sense of mutual respect eventually develops between them.

Steven Spielberg is the only director in history to have seen his filmography rake in a cumulative total of over $10 billion at the box office, which is almost $4 billion ahead of his closest competition, and he’s managed to do it by frequently switching up genres. To put his success into perspective, out of the five names behind him on the all-time moneymaking list, James Cameron is the only other that hasn’t relied primarily on a single franchise.
The Russo brothers, Peter Jackson and Michael Bay trail far behind the bearded legend, and they’ve leaned heavily on the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Middle-earth and Transformers to power their commercial success. Indeed, you name it and Spielberg can do it, from reinventing cinema with Jaws to delivering a gut-punching emotional drama in Schindler’s List, via the rollicking adventures of Indiana Jones and the awe-inspiring spectacle of Jurassic Park.

When Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg team up on a project, you can guarantee that something special is on the way, with the notable exception of fluffy and forgettable dramatic comedy The Terminal, which is still one of the most overlooked entries in either man’s filmography. Ignoring the airport dramedy, they’ve collaborated on four critically acclaimed movies and two of the greatest TV shows of the modern era, which is pretty good going.
Of course, World War II has proved very fertile ground for Hanks and Spielberg, who were two of the main creative driving forces behind Band of Brothers and The Pacific, while Saving Private Ryan raked in over $480 million at the box office and saw the bearded one scoop his second Academy Award for Best Director, while their two most recent period pieces Bridge of Spies and The Post were both nominated for Best Picture.

The best movies are often based on fact over fiction, as the plots tend to be more relatable to audience members. Various films have been inspired by intriguing personal stories or real events of tragedy, success, and perseverance. If you would like to watch an unforgettable flick based on real individuals, check out the following must-watch movies. Catch Me If You Can (2002) Tom Hanks and Leonardo DiCaprio proved why they’re the best in business in Catch Me If You Can. The flick tells the story of Frank Abagnale Jr., who became a master of both forgery and disguise, cashing millions of dollars in fake checks. To do so, he posed as a doctor, Pan Am pilot and a legal prosecutor, to name only a few, and he mastered all this before he reached the age of 19 years old. Expect exceptional acting, plenty of action, and an enthralling story, which...

The Evolution of Leonardo DiCaprio: From ‘Growing Pains’ to ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ (Photos)
For nearly 30 years, Leonardo DiCaprio has managed to maintain an image as a handsome, Hollywood heartthrob and as one of the industry’s most bankable and pedigreed performers. While he’s consistently been at the top of the A-list, the roles DiCaprio has taken have changed dramatically. In “Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood,” DiCaprio lends his star power to help Quentin Tarantino shape a new Tinsel Town legend. Here’s how the actor has evolved over the years:
“Growing Pains” (1991)
After guest starring on “Roseanne” and “Parenthood,” DiCaprio landed a role on the long-running sitcom “Growing Pains.” He played Luke Brower, a homeless student in the class of young school teacher Mike (Kirk Cameron) that the Seaver family take in until he is reunited with his father.

It isn’t especially difficult to explain pop culture’s recent obsession with liars and con artists, but Christoph Waltz’s “Georgetown” suggests that Washington D.C. was a magnet for megalomaniacal grifters long before Donald Trump reduced the property value of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. Power has a funny way of attracting the most pathetic of people, and this half-formed, almost true dark comedy is nothing if not a story about the most pathetic of people. Alas, it stops a bit short of being anything else.
Based on Franklin Foer’s 2012 New York Times article “The Worst Marriage in Georgetown,” Waltz’s directorial debut — in which he credits himself as “C. Waltz” — opens with a winking title card that insists “this film does not claim to be the truth,” and spends the rest of its run time wobbling on a knife’s edge between different kinds of discomfort. Waltz himself plays Ulrich Mott,...

It goes without saying that movie music has come a mighty long way in the last 100 years or so, but the first two decades of the 21st century have nevertheless been an extraordinarily active and evolutionary stretch of time for film scores. Without discounting the bold and formative achievements of old masters like Bernard Hermann and Toru Takemitsu, it’s fair to say that the rise of independent cinema and the challenge of the digital age have provoked a true paradigm shift in how we think about musical accompaniment.
Rock and avant-garde musicians like Jonny Greenwood and Mica Levi have used narrative projects as inspiration to explore new facets of their genius, while more traditional composers such as Alexandre Desplat and Carter Burwell have risen to the challenge by delivering the most beautiful work of their careers. Indeed, some of the very best movie scores in recent memory (including the...

Leonardo DiCaprio has portrayed Howard Hughes, J. Edgar Hoover, Hugh Glass, Jordan Belfort, and Frank Abagnale Jr., but he's not done playing real people on the big screen just yet.
Deadline reports that on the heels of the announcement that the recent Oscar winner is gearing up to star in Truevine, DiCaprio is also looking to play famed music producer Sam Phillips in a new movie for Paramount Pictures. The studio just purchased the rights to a book called Sam Phillips: The Man Who Invented Rock ‘N’ Roll, and DiCaprio's Appian Way Productions is developing the film adaptation and looking for a writer and director to come on board.
Phillips was the man behind Sun Records, and is described like this in the book:

Leonardo DiCaprio, it seems, has never met a prestige biopic he didn't like. We've already seen his respective takes on Howard Hughes (which netted him an Oscar nod), J. Edgar Hoover and the somewhat less immediately recognizable Frank Abagnale Jr., and will soon see him as business shark turned motivational speaker Jordan Belfort in "The Wolf of Wall Street." Next up: Woodrow Wilson, 28th President of the Us, already played to Oscar-nominated affect by Alexander Knox in a 1944 biopic. DiCaprio will co-produce the new film, based on a recently published biography by Pulitzer Prize winner A. Scott Berg. No denying...

Taking on one of the best American novels ever is always going to make for a tough go, and when it’s The Great Gatsby, the uphill battle is all the worse. Condensing all that is most difficult to film into a brisk, layered prose that can be consumed in an afternoon, and analyzed for months, the book is mostly Nick Carraway’s thoughts on obsession, indulgence, and the odd nature of what we wish for. None of it is exactly well-suited for the screen, especially because the book gets its real power from Nick seeing it, not you.
As might be expected, Baz Luhrman has a somewhat different game in mind. The number of themes and metaphoric elements worked into the short page-count of The Great Gatsby is one of the most significant feats in all literature, nevermind just American novels, but whatever Fitzgerald might have been trying to say with his work,...

You've heard of art imitating life and life imitating art, but today we bring you what may be the first recorded case of life imitating art imitating life imitating something really, really stupid, as The Guardian is reporting that an Italian film fan created a fake identity as an airline pilot after being inspired by Steven Spielberg's "Catch Me If You Can."
Apparently he didn't read the "don't try this at home" disclaimer.
"Catch Me if You Can," you may remember, came out back in 2002 and stars Leonardo DiCaprio as real-life conman Frank Abagnale Jr., who posed as an airline pilot back in the 60's, flying dozens of flights and becoming one of America's most wanted criminals in the process.
Now, you would think that heightened security at airports these days would make it impossible for someone to follow in Abagnale's shady footsteps, but apparently not. According to the report,...

Ever since his film debut in the long-forgotten horror flick "Critters 3," Leonardo DiCaprio has carefully selected roles that would establish him as one of our generation's most diverse actors. He has played everything from a scruffy third-class artist to a reclusive billionaire, a mentally unstable pyromaniac to a person who infiltrates minds only to sear ideas into them.
His varied roles have given the three-time Oscar nominee one of Hollywood's most enviable résumés, and he's already garnering early award buzz with his upcoming lead turn in "J. Edgar." 'Catch Me If You Can' might not be the best Steven Spielberg film (although it's up there), but one could definitely make the argument that 'Catch Me If You Can' is the most Steven Spielberg film. It's got everything: Daddy issues, framing devices, damaged childhoods, the jaunty cinematography of Janusz Kaminksi, a parade of attractive but largely unknown brunettes with foreign accents of various origins, etc ... all wrapped up in the irresistible veneer of grand entertainment. The wide-eyed discovery of 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind,' the nimble solemnity of 'Schindler's List,' and the gleefully kinetic pursuit of 'Minority Report' -- this flick has it all. Unless there's a Spider-Man or Evil Dead musical to write about, Broadway really doesn't come up too much here at /Film. Well, another big time film is getting the song and dance treatment as Catch Me If You Can is now officially coming to Broadway on April 10, 2011 with previews starting March 7, 2011. Most people know the story of famous con man Frank Abagnale Jr., one of the most successful check forgers in history who also posed as a doctor, lawyer and Pan Am pilot all before his 19th birthday, because it was adapted into a film directed by Steven Spielberg, starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. That movie, not the original book by Abagnale Jr., will be the source material for the show with a book by Terrence McNally (Ragtime) and music and lyrics by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who worked together on Hairspray.
