Andre Braugher, the two-time Emmy winner who died this week at the age of 61, was an unknown when the hardboiled NBC detective drama “Homicide: Life on the Street” debuted in the coveted post-Super Bowl time slot on Jan. 31, 1993. He left the series six years later as an in-demand leading man who went on to star in TV series include FX’s “Thief,” TNT’s “Men of a Certain Age,” Fox/NBC’s “Brooklyn Nine Nine,” in addition to many other prominent roles.
But it started with his years on “Homicide.” Braugher played Detective Frank Pembleton, one of the most unforgettable characters that television has ever produced, thanks to the brilliance of executive producers Tom Fontana, Barry Levinson and Jim Finnerty and a murderers row of a writers room. The stellar supporting cast alongside included Ned Beatty, Melissa Leo and Yaphet Kotto.

"Based on a true story." No five words in cinema have been abused more than those that have opened so many movies. "The Good Nurse" is one of them. Netflix's latest true crime drama is based on the 2013 book by Charles Graeber and documents Charles Cullen, a nurse who murdered patients from 1988 to 2003 by injecting insulin and/or digoxin into IV bags.
Eddie Redmayne plays Cullen in the film, but he's not the lead. That would be his friend and co-worker, Amy Louhgren (Jessica Chastain). She has a good heart, albeit one afflicted with cardiomyopathy, and so comes to rely on "Charlie" during their shared night shifts. After one of their patients dies, though, she slowly discovers his crimes.
So, how true of a story is "The Good Nurse"? While "true story" movies often employ composite characters, Amy Louhgren was the real nurse who helped catch Cullen. The film's personal details of Amy,...

Photo: ‘The Good Nurse’ Working long nights in the ICU, battling a severe heart condition, and parenting two children as a single mother, Amy Loughren was happy to meet a new coworker and colleague that exerted energy that lifted weights off her shoulders. With their newfound friendship, Amy Loughren did not expect that she would fall into an objective to save the lives of any patients in the path of Charles Cullen, a nurse suspected to be responsible for the undetected murders of many patients. Hesitant, as she believed this was out of character for the charismatic and relatable Charles, the rise of deaths in the hospital following the employment of Cullen raised her suspicions. Teaming up with detectives Tim Braun and Danny Baldwin, Amy worked discreetly with the duo to get proof of the homicides and a confession from Charles. Dramatized from the real events in 2003 and the novel by Charles Graeber,...

Warning: The following article contains major spoilers for the Netflix film "The Good Nurse."
Any show or film "based on a true story" is guaranteed to have a built-in creep factor. In the case of "The Good Nurse," the story rips pages from Charles Graeber's 2013 book " The Good Nurse: A True Story of Medicine, Madness, and Murder," which details how real-life serial killer Charles "Charlie" Cullen murdered dozens (possibly hundreds) of people. The film, co-starring Eddie Redmayne as Cullen and Jessica Chastain as the eponymous good nurse Amy Loughren, is the latest in a long string of serial killer adaptations to hit Netflix, for better or worse.
While the film itself falls a little flat, there is plenty to admire about both Chastain's and Redmayne's performances. Redmayne, in particular, makes a disturbing turn as the deadly nurse, who insidiously wields his power to kill people under the guise of simply doing his job.

These days, Netflix is all in on the serial killer beat, thanks to myriad offerings on the twisted subject, from Ryan Murphy’s massively successful Jeffrey Dahmer miniseries to Tobias Lindholm’s recent chilly drama “The Good Nurse.” Never one to waste an opportunity to keep its audience’s rapt attention, Murphy’s initial one-off is now set for the anthology treatment (which will explore various titular “monsters” through history), while Lindholm’s fact-based feature is followed by a flimsy documentary about murderous nurse Charles Cullen.
— particularly when interested parties can watch Lindholm’s far superior dramatization of the same material. The Cullen case is ripe for exploration, though, what with the convicted murderer believed to potentially be America’s most prolific serial killer. He’s currently incarcerated for 11 back-to-back lifetime sentences with 29 confirmed victims and possibly 400 overall. That Cullen never fully atoned or explained his crimes — committed while working...

Jessica Chastain is front and center in Netflix's latest true-crime film "The Good Nurse" as heroic nurse Amy Loughren, a pivotal figure who helped take down her coworker turned serial killer, Charles Cullen.
In 2003, Cullen was arrested for the attempted murder of a patient and the murder of another, which eventually led to him confessing to 29 killings throughout his 15-year career as a nurse in New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Oscar-winning actor Eddie Redmayne portrays Cullen in the film, which examines the true story of Loughren's complicated relationship with Cullen - whom she considered a close friend - and how her cooperation with investigators led to the end of his murderous spree.
Amidst "The Good Nurse" hitting Netflix on Oct. 26, here's what Loughren is up to today.

Based on the real-life story of a nurse who apparently killed hundreds of patients, this is a creepily watchable thriller with the subtlest hint of Fatal Attraction
Screenwriter Krysty Wilson-Cairns has crafted a nifty procedural thriller based on the true-crime case of Charles Cullen, the New Jersey nurse who in 2003 was finally arrested after apparently killing hundreds of patients over the years by covertly administering lethal, intravenous overdoses. The director is Tobias Lindholm, the film-maker and writer who has also worked with Thomas Vinterberg on The Hunt and Another Round; Eddie Redmayne is the insidiously personable and caring Cullen, and Jessica Chastain plays his co-worker, an overworked fellow nurse called Amy Loughren – a real-life figure who really did befriend Cullen, suspect the worst and work with the police to get him caught.

According to director Tobias Lindholm, “The Good Nurse” has no intention of being a typical true crime film. “We realized that it wasn’t a story only about a serial killer, it was about a friendship. And it was a proof of humanity,” Lindholm said while visiting TheWrap and Shutterstock’s Interview and Portrait Studio at the Toronto Film Festival for a conversation moderated by TheWrap’s Executive Editor, Awards, Steve Pond.
“The Good Nurse” premieres at the Toronto International Film Festival on Sunday, September 11, and explores the real-life friendship between nurses Amy Loughren (Jessica Chastain) and Charles “Charlie” Cullen, who is suspected of killing approximately 400 patients during his 16-year career. The movie also depicts the attempt to bring Cullen to justice.
In the studio, Lindholm was joined by “The Good Nurse” cast members Nnamdi Asomugha, Jessica Chastain, and Eddie Redmayne, all of whom were ready and willing to dig...

As Doctor Who series 11 adds a trio of soap opera stars to its cast. And it makes sense...
What do Mandip Gill, Tosin Cole and Bradley Walsh have in common? Other than the fact that they're all joining Jodie Whittaker's Doctor as part of the regular cast of Doctor Who's next series, they've all acted in soap operas. Even 12 years since the show was revived by a former Coronation Street writer, that still makes some fans nervous.
Whatever your thoughts on Corrie, EastEnders and other serial dramas (to give them their proper name – the nickname comes from an outdated observation about soap companies sponsoring many of them), they're the best, most relevant training ground for young actors in British television. It's also more relevant to the experience of working on Doctor Who than you might necessarily expect.

Farrah Abraham isn't afraid of making enemies it seems, particularly amongst her British cousins in Celebrity Big Brother.

When you have the son of an evergreen star in a film that's being directed by one of the most prolific directors of Bollywood, you just have to settle for nothing but the best. We are indeed talking about Mirziya, a film that's being directed by Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra and stars the dynamic Harshvardhan Kapoor and the stunning Saiyami Kher. News reports now state that Mehra has roped in the famous Australian action director Danny Baldwin (known for his exceptional work in Tom Cruise's film The Last Samurai) to shoot a night safari sequence for the film. The said scene is scheduled to be shot in Mumbai with lots of horses.

Brian Trenchard-Smith has, by his own estimation, directed "42 crimes against cinema"... which brings us to his latest filmmaking infraction, Drive Hard starring John Cusack and Thomas Jane.
From Rlj/Image Entertainment, Drive Hard will be available via VOD this week on September 4 and in theaters and on iTunes on October 3.
The action/adventure film was written by Brian along with Chad Law, Evan Law and Brigitte Jean Allen. Here's a synopsis:
With a heist in mind, a mysterious American called Keller (Cusack) arrives in Brisbane needing a getaway driver. Rather than recruit one from the local underworld, he tricks a driving school instructor, Roberts (Jane) into taking the wheel.
Keller chose well, Roberts just happens to be a washed out Formula-One driver. Chased by the cops and the mob, Roberts is forced to use his racing skills to evade pursuit on a Hard Drive that takes the two along the Gold Coast of Australia.

Next week will see the explosive return of Todd Grimshaw to the Coronation Street cobbles as Bruno Langley returns to the soap after a near-decade absence.
The openly-gay character will cause frictions with residents of the street, with more than a few regulars less than happy to see his face again.
In scenes that are bound to shock, Jason will be stunned by the return of his errant brother, while feathers will be ruffled as Todd makes advances on Maria Connor’s bisexual boyfriend Marcus Dent.
Todd, who was last seen in the soap back in 2004, announced his return to the ITV 1 show back in June, with his comeback scenes to air on 4 November.
For long-term fans of the TV series, the return of Todd will bring back some old memories and a healthy dose of nostalgia, and it’s got us thinking who else we’d like to see return to Coronation Street.

Happy Endings returns tonight! Let's twirl! To celebrate one of our favorite comedies on television debuting its third season tonight, we hit the set during the premiere's shoot to get the scoop on what we'll be seeing from one of the awesomest group of friends to ever assemble on television. Battle Of The Pacific
Stars: Sean McGowan, Daniel Baldwin, Treat Williams, Matthew R. Anderson, Yutaka Takenouchi | Written by Takuya Nishioka, Gregory Marquette, Cellin Gluck | Directed by Hideyuki Hirayama
Four months after the hostilities of WWII officially ceased, Capt. Sakae Oba (aka The Fox) and a loyalist band of Japanese soldiers entrenched themselves on Mt. Tapochau and continued fighting a guerrilla campaign. Meanwhile, a U.S. officer, determined to flush out him out of his mountain hideaway, sets about his seemingly simple objective. Strengthened by several hundred civilians who refuse to enter camps or follow suicide directives, Oba and his people fight on, unable to come to terms with an unthinkable defeat.
Much like Clint Eastwood’s Flags of our Fathers and Letters from Iwo Jima, Battle of the Pacific is a war movie told from the perspective of both sides of the battle – in this case the Japanese and the American’s.

Imitation is the sincerest (and cheapest) form of flattery.
If there's anything that proves the success of Zombieland, it's the fact that it's getting a low-budget parody. This time, however, National Lampoon is nowhere to be found, nor are the Wayans family.
Instead it's Cheezy Flicks Productions and filmmaker Sean Skelding with a movie called Stripperland. The movie stars Ben Sheppard, Maren Mcguire, Ileana Herrin, Jamison Challeen, with cameos from Daniel Baldwin, Thom Bray, Linnea Quigley, Boyd Banks, and Troma CEO Lloyd Kaufman. Gilbert Gottfried reportedly turned down a role.
According to Wizbang Pop!, the movie sports a $300,000 budget and will be released on February 22, 2011, concurrently on DVD and 160 theaters. Stripperland is shooting in Vancouver with Baldwin reportedly uttering the line "They won’t eat me, because they have to stop and strip," which Wizbang called "the best movie line of the year" in a fit of hyperbolic exaggeration.

Daniel Baldwin is urging the public not to judge Lindsay Lohan too harshly - insisting the troubled star's problems are not her fault because addiction is "a disease". Lohan was released from a California jail on Monday, August 2 after serving less than two weeks of a 90-day sentence for violating her probation relating to a 2007 DUI arrest.
She has now checked into rehab to spend 90 days receiving treatment for her addictions as part of her sentence. Baldwin, who spent years battling a raging drug habit and endured nine stints in rehab, insists Lohan deserves sympathy because she "doesn't have a choice" when she turns to alcohol or illegal substances."
He tells U.S. TV show "Larry King Live", "This woman has a disease. She doesn't have a choice in it. She has a disease. So it's not a fault thing. It's now a matter of whether or not she's going...

It's now a matter of whether or not she's going to go and get her (therapy) and decide that she's going to try to beat this disease, or she's going to succumb to it and end up killing someone in a car or die of an overdose...
"It's no different than any other disease. She suffers from an affliction that is treatable, and she can keep it in remission. But there is no cure for addiction."
And Baldwin is adamant Lohan needed to be forced into rehab by the courts otherwise she might never have addressed her problems.
He adds, "Lindsay is Lindsay's own worst enemy right now. She just keeps getting her way, because she won't surrender to the fact that she has this disease and this problem. So it's going to probably take the L.A. court system and a smart judge to put the screws to her a little bit to get her to see the light of day."...

NBC's oddly riveting reality series "I'm a Celebrity ... Lou Diamond Phillips, the father figure of the lot, took the win. It's a series with emotional landmines as potent as tarantula cocktails and crocodile-filled obstacle courses. And on Wednesday, NBC's I'm a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here! ends its three-week run when one star will be crowned the ultimate King, or Queen, of the Jungle. Challenges notwithstanding, the celebrity survivor will also have to stomach the return of former contestants Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt, who landed in Costa Rica on Tuesday, as well as Janice Dickinson and Daniel Baldwin, who are also set to return to the jungle. It took a trip to the Costa Rican jungle and a run-in with a plate of bull testicles for Sanjaya Malakar to finally find his groove. The frequently mocked “American Idol” seventh place finisher from season six (who became a national joke thanks to his infamous ponyhawk and questionable singings skills) is starting to look pretty smart right about now for not seriously pursuing a singing career right away (aside from those Bar Mitzvah gigs).
What he has done is embraced his inner “jungle boy” and, on Monday night, he transformed into the break-out star on the slow motion train wreck that is this season of “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!” With the Heidi and Spencer drama thankfully taking a back seat to the goings-on in camp for most the episode, Sanjaya took center screen for a good portion of Monday night’s show, and he shined!

I want to sue NBC for torturing me by making Monday night’s “I’m a Celebrity … Get Me Out of Here!” two-hours long. Not cool.
“But Jim,” NBC might argue, “we had so much to cover, what with Speidi returning and then Heidi getting sick and then Janice having a panic attack and Lou Diamond Phillips busting out a British accent!”
Phooey.
So Speidi survived a night in The Lost Chamber. It was completely uneventful. The drama began when they returned to the camp. A newly-spiritual Spencer told his castmates the tale of his recent awakening. It involved a tremendous amount of vomit, or as he and Heidi put it, getting rid of the demons. (Their word choice will make my next hangover feel supernatural! Thanks, guys!) In fact, now Spencer was so charged with the Holy Spirit that he and Heidi were fasting for God. Seriously. All the...

Creating antics by quitting and returning to "I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!", Spencer Pratt and Heidi Montag are finding their way back to the show for the third time. Latest from the developing story, the couple is begging NBC to take them back but the network is letting the other fellow contestants to determine whether they can stay or not.
The decision will, in fact, be made into an episode airing Wednesday, June 4. "Live tonight: Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt return to the jungle after quitting Monday night - the remaining cast members determine their fate if they are welcome back in the competition," the statement from the network is read.
Also providing confirming statement was NBC reality programming chief Paul Telegdy who told Ryan Seacrest on Wednesday that "there'll probably have to be some kind of penalty for what's effectively a break in the rules, which is leaving the camp.

Will they be allowed to come back? That remains to be seen, as Wednesday night's episode closed with their fate left in the hands of their co-stars, who seemed divided about allowing the controversial pair to return. About their desire to come back, Heidi said, "We realized that we made a big mistake… we really took it for granted." Her new husband Spencer said, "I lost my mind, I love all of those people. … I just looked at the whole experience the wrong way." It was decided that if their co-stars agreed to allow them another chance, they would have to spend a night in the lost chamber to re-enter the competition. But when the show's host,...

Newlyweds Heidi Montag and Spencer Pratt have returned to the jungle after quitting U.S. reality show I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here!
The couple was seen walking from the survival show on Monday night and The Hills stars appeared to have returned to Los Angeles.
But now UsMagazine.com reports the couple spotted under blankets at Lax airport were actually Pratt's sister Stephanie and a family friend, and reports suggest the walk-off was all part of a plot to rev up TV ratings.
The couple's representative says, "Heidi and Spencer are still in the jungle and part of the show."
Montag and Pratt were part of Tuesday night's show, even though Pratt explained to his fellow contestants, "Super-celebrities don't belong in the jungle. They belong in Hollywood with the paparazzi."
Actor and recovering addict Daniel Baldwin was reportedly jetting to the Costa Rica jungle set to replace the Pratts, but his agent has denied the story.
And TV executive Paul Telegdy, who is overseeing I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out Of Here! for U.S. network NBC, has confirmed the newlyweds are back on the show.
He says, "I had a long chat with Spencer on Tuesday evening... He was very contrite. He felt that he'd been a bit hot-headed... I think he hadn't really understood the purpose of the show was to raise a lot of money for charity."
Telegdy insisted on asking Pratt's castmates, including actors Lou Diamond Phillips and Stephen Baldwin and supermodel Janice Dickinson, if they'd be willing to let the newlyweds rejoin them in the jungle permanently.
He adds, "We're gonna talk to the cast when they wake up to see if Heidi and Spencer can come back."...
