The 2024 Songwriters Hall of Fame Induction and Awards Gala will feature a special appearance from Diane Warren, who has been named this year’s recipient of the Johnny Mercer Award. The award, to be presented at the ceremony on June 13, is considered to be the institution’s highest honor. It is reserved for songwriters and songwriting teams that have already been inducted into the Hall of Fame and whose catalogue of work matches the quality and standards set by esteemed songwriter Johnny Mercer.

During Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy’s R.E.M. tribute tour stop in Athens, Georgia on Thursday night, the original R.E.M. members Mike Mills, Peter Buck, Bill Berry, and Michael Stipe joined them on stage.
The reunion marks the first time R.E.M.’s core four members have been on stage together since their Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame induction in 2007. Currently, Shannon and Narducy are on tour performing R.E.M.’s 1983 album Murmur in full, which spawned from Mike Mills’ guest appearance with the duo in Chicago last year. At Shannon and Narducy’s performance at the 40 Watt Club in Athens, Georgia last night, each R.E.M. member joined the duo on stage.

The Songwriters Hall of Fame has a new class of inductees, including Timbaland, R.E.M., Steely Dan, Hillary Lindsey and Dean Pitchford.
The organization announced its 2024 class on Wednesday, and the famed songwriters will be officially inducted on June 13. The event will take place in New York City at the Marriott Marquis Hotel.

“We are therefore very proud that we are continually recognizing some of the culturally most important songwriters of all time and that the 2024 slate represents not just iconic songs but also diversity and unity across genres, ethnicity and gender, songwriters who have enriched our lives and literally...

R.E.M.’s 11th studio album, Up, informally flagged the start of the third and final phase of the band’s career, following both their early I.R.S. years and their mainstream peak in the 1990s. Drummer Bill Berry departed the band after suffering a brain aneurysm while on tour in 1995, but the remaining members opted not to replace him, instead employing electronic drum programming throughout the majority of the album. And the timing, it seemed, was serendipitous, as the electronica movement was reaching its apotheosis.
Up subsequently marked the end of R.E.M.’s decade-long relationship with rock producer Scott Litt, replaced by Ray of Light knob-twirler Pat McCarthy and mixer Nigel Godrich, who produced Ok Computer. And yet, the album doesn’t immerse itself as vigorously in the genre as those two watershed releases. Sonically, tracks like the Eno-esque opener “Airportman” and the gently percolating “Suspicion...

There were few bands on the planet bigger than R.E.M. in the mid-Nineties. Their popularity grew every year in the Eighties before they went supernova the following decade thanks to hits like “Losing My Religion,” “Man on the Moon,” “Everybody Hurts,” and “What’s the Frequency, Kenneth?” Warner Bros. was so desperate to keep them on the label in 1996 that it gave them $80 million for their next five albums, breaking all industry records up to that point.

Translating a podcast to a TV screen is a multi-pronged challenge. For a show like “Song Exploder,” hosted in its audio form over various stretches of its nearly seven-year run by Hrishikesh Hirway, that transfer of ideas meant going from listening to seeing in more ways than one.
Luckily for Hirway, when it came to the start of each episode of the new “Song Exploder” Netflix documentary series, he already had a solid foundation. Like so many other aspects of the TV project, it was a matter of building on what was already there.
“The theme music for the TV show is actually the same opening from the podcast, but with other stuff added on top of it,” Hirway told IndieWire. “The theme on the podcast is a pretty simple thing, a little synth part and a drum part. I kept them and added orchestration on top of it, violins and horns,...

A friend of mine once told me that writing about The Office after Steve Carell left was like writing about R.E.M. after drummer Bill Berry left. There was no denying that the glory years were over, and plenty of people felt that both entities should have ended then and there. But neither did. Put lightly, there were ups and downs with R.E.M's post-Berry run and the post-Carell years. Both were artistic entities missing an essential piece (Berry was an important part of the band's writing and editing process), and both struggled to reinvent themselves. But both eventually proved that they still had things left to show us, and still deserved to exist. (I'll rein this analogy in before we get too off course, but I will throw down for Up any day of the week.) In many ways, this penultimate episode of The Office felt like the real cap...

On 21st September 2011, one of the best, and most popular American rock bands of all time announced they will no longer be making music that has went some way to defining the ‘American Rock’ genre. After over twenty years and countless classics, R.E.M. made the announcement that many had feared, but alas was all but expected. Having failed to reach the heights of their 80s and 90s material, Michael Stipe, Mike Mills, Peter Buck and Bill Berry called it quits.
Part Lies, Part Heart, Part Truth, Part Garbage 1982–2011 aside from being an epically long title verging on the philosophical, combines all of the hits from their early days on IRS Records to their timeless classics on Warner Bros. They have, as expected taken three or four of the best songs from each of their albums and formed almost like a jigsaw puzzle of where R.E.M began,...

R.E.M.'s Wednesday break-up announcement placed a bookend after 2011's "Collapse Into Now," officially making it the group's final studio album (barring any unforeseen reunions). Their sound has floated and meandered since original drummer Bill Berry left the band in 1997. Left to their own devices, Michael Stipe, Peter Buck and Mike Mills stayed productive, but never managed to hoist a true new classic up into their discography.
"Up" and "Around the Sun" delivered a few memorable tracks and collaborations, but none of R.E.M.'s post-1997 albums matched the levels of indie rock invention and lyrical inspiration that they achieved in the following five classics.
In fact, if you ever need to get acquainted with R.E.M. at its best, put these albums on your playlist, and prepare to understand what made them great.

'We walk away with a great sense of gratitude,' band says Wednesday, bringing to close a 30-year career.

After 30 years, 15 studio albums, dozens of iconic music videos and boundary-pushing tours (and just four core members) — not to mention a sphere of influence that extends from the nascent days of college radio to the buzzy blogosphere of today — R.E.M. are calling it quits.
The band made the announcement Wednesday (September 21) on their website, posting a message that, like most things they did, was almost unyieldingly humble:
"To our Fans and Friends: As R.E.M., and as lifelong friends and co-conspirators, we have decided to call it a day as a band," their statement reads. "We walk away with a great sense of gratitude, of finality, and of astonishment at all we have accomplished. To anyone who ever felt touched by our music, our deepest thanks for listening.
