The live-action Masters of the Universe reboot is finally going to see the light of day after being in and out of development for many years.
After numerous false starts, Netflix was all set to develop a feature take on the beloved animated series back in 2022, but we recently got word that the latest attempt to get the project off the ground had also fallen by the wayside.
However, we'd later learn that Amazon/MGM Studios had acquired the movie, with Bumblebee director Travis Knight in talks to helm. Now, multiple trades are reporting that Knight has officially signed on, and the movie is set to hit theaters on June 5, 2026.
Chris Butler rewrote the script from an initial draft by David Callaham (Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings). Previously, the Nee Brothers (The Lost City) were attached to direct.

In July of 2023, Netflix announced that not only had they axed their plans to adapt Mattel's "Masters of the Universe" property into a live-action film, but they were doing so after spending over $30 million in development. Fans had been looking forward to a human He-Man flick since it was first announced in 2007, but the development with Sony Pictures in 2022 seemed like a sure bet. Then it was scrapped, but the project's move to Netflix made sense considering the streamer is home to "He-Man & Masters of the Universe," "Masters of the Universe: Revelation," and "She-Ra and the Princesses of Power." Unfortunately, Netflix dropped the project, which had already cast actor/dancer Kyle Allen to play He-Man/Prince Adam, and Mattel was left looking for a new home for the film. According to a recent report from Variety, that home has been found with Amazon and Travis Knight has been announced as the director.

Last year, author Grady Hendrix contributed the 29 page short story Ankle Snatcher (you can read it Here) to the Amazon Original Stories Creature Feature collection, which also featured stories by Joe Hill, Josh Malerman, Paul Tremblay, Jason Mott, and Chandler Baker. Now, Deadline reports that Sony has acquired the rights to make a feature film adaptation of Ankle Snatcher.
Hendrix’s story follows Marcus, who grew up believing his father killed his mother — then blamed it on the boogeyman under the bed. Always leave the lights on, his father warned, or the boogeyman will get you. Marcus still heeds the superstition, especially when he invites his new girlfriend over. Is Marcus haunted by a creature or has he just inherited his father’s murderous delusions? The night will tell.
Hendrix will be producing the film alongside Escape Artist’ Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal, and Tony Shaw, and Aperture Entertainment’s Adam Goldworm.

“Barbie” is a cultural phenomenon, grossing nearly $1.5 billion and racking up eight Oscar nominations, all while launching scores of catchphrases and memes.
So it’s understandable that Mattel, the company behind the iconic doll, is looking to capitalize on its cinematic success by developing dozens of movies based on its games and toys. Moviegoers can look forward to Barney, Bob the Builder and He-Man hitting the big screen in the not-so-distant future.
But as Hollywood raids toy store shelves to feed its insatiable hunger for IP, it’s worth noting that when it comes to this type of film, for every “Barbie”-sized smash there’s a “Battleship”-like bomb. With that in mind, here are some of the movies that Mattel has in the works.

Chris Butler will rewrite the script from an initial draft written by David Callaham and Aaron & Adam Nee. Amazon MGM Studios in final negotiations for rights to the project, with Mattel’s Robbie Brenner and Escape Artists’ Todd Black and Jason Blumenthal producing.
Amazon MGM had no comment.
Knight is the President and CEO of Laika, the Portland-based animation studio best known for hit stop-motion films including Coraline and Missing Link. Although his focus has still been on animation in recent years — he helmed the 2016 toon feature Kubo and the Two Strings...

A pact between Apple Original Films, A24, Spike Lee, and Denzel Washington is making noise this Thursday with news about a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s 1963 crime drama High and Low. Lee and Washington are old friends, of course, with the duo’s fourth collaboration being for 2006’s Inside Man.
In Kurosawa’s High and Low, an executive of a Yokohama shoe company becomes a victim of extortion when his chauffeur’s son is kidnapped by mistake and held for ransom. Details about Lee’s remake are scarce, though we know it will be an English-language reimagining of the original—details about how and if the plot will differ from Kurosawa’s classic crime drama remains a mystery.
Alan Fox and Lee wrote the screenplay for the High and Low remake, with A24, Escape Artists, and Mandalay Pictures handling development. Production kicks off in March, with Todd Black producing for...

Denzel Washington and Spike Lee are reuniting for their fifth film together – the first since 2006’s “Inside Man.” Apple Original Films and A24 are partnering on “High and Low,” which will be released theatrically by A24 before a global launch on AppleTV+.
The thriller, which starts production in March, is the English-language reinterpretation of Akira Kurosawa’s crime thriller of the same name. The 1963 film starring Toshiro Mifune was based on the Ed McBain novel “King’s Ransom,” which chronicles the ruin of a businessman following a ransom payment to kidnappers.
Developed and produced by A24, Escape Artists and Mandalay Pictures, “High and Low” features a script written by Alan Fox and Spike Lee.
As Apple is a co-financier on “High and Low,” this project will not be included in a recent multi-year deal that A24 brokered with competing streaming service Max last year, sources familiar with the movie said. The...

There is an update about the long-awaited live-action Masters of the Universe project.
A live-adaptation based on the blond barbarian, popularized as part of Mattel toys, is in serious talks with Amazon MGM Studios from Adam and Aaron Nee, the writing and directing team behind The Lost City, via Variety.
Conversations are taking place with Amazon after Netflix dropped a planned version of the Nee Brothers film in July.
Keep reading to find out more…
Netflix spent nearly $30 million in development for the project, which was meant to star Kyle Allen. The streamer walked when the budget, originally set for more than $200 million, could not be meaningfully reduced, via Variety.
The Amazon talks are “tenuous, another source cautions,” but if the studio moves forward, it will need to close new deals with the Nees for a script, and to direct.
Kyle is “still in the mix” to star as He-Man.

Netflix has been developing a live-action Masters of the Universe movie for some time, but it was revealed this summer that the streaming service had scrapped the project. However, Variety reports that the Masters of the Universe movie could find a new home at Amazon MGM Studios.
The potential move to Amazon isn’t a sure thing, as a source told Variety that the talks are “tenuous.” Should they go forward, Amazon would need to close new deals with Adam and Aaron Nee to write and direct the Masters of the Universe movie. Kyle Allen (A Haunting in Venice) is still attached to star in the movie as He-Man.

It looks like Amazon MGM Studios has He-Man’s power sword as the studio is in early talks to produce a live-action “Masters of the Universe” film, according to a insider with knowledge of the project.
Netflix put the property into turnaround after investing $30 million in its development. The project has been bouncing around Hollywood from Mattel and producer Todd Black for over 15 years, with Warner Bros. and Sony, as well as filmmakers like Jon M. Chu and McG temporarily involved.
This recent attempt was shelved due to concerns over the budget, which reportedly ran over $200 million and was shut down even after the filmmakers allegedly brought the costs below $180 million.
This latest version had Kyle Allen — still officially attached — starring as He-Man with Adam and Aaron Nee (“The Lost City”) set to direct.

The film, which was also written by Ling, became the top-grossing film ever from a solo female director, a feat only recently succeeded by Greta Gerwig and “Barbie.”
The original movie is set in 2001, when a young woman’s mother dies in a car accident. Grief-stricken, she travels back to 1981. Fearing that she had been a bad daughter, she looks to make her mom’s life as happy as it can be, including setting her up with a local factory manager’s son. It sounds very sweet.
In early development, Laura Kosann is adapting the screenplay. Kosann is a 2021 Academy Nicholl Fellow and has...

On Tuesday morning, a letter signed by over 2,300 film and TV producers was sent to the president of the organization that bargains on behalf of studios and streamers with Hollywood unions, the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers. Its message to AMPTP leader Carol Lombardini: Please remove the word “producers” from your organization’s title.
The letter, a copy of which was shared with The Hollywood Reporter, explained that “the inclusion of ‘Producers’ in your name inaccurately implies that all producers are part of this organization,” and noted that none of the independent producers who signed are members of the AMPTP. The letter continued that while AMPTP member companies “may technically ‘produce’ film and television in the verb definition of the word, the noun producer reflects a job and role on a film and television crew that is not what the AMPTP member companies or their employees do.

September. Labor Day, come and gone. Fall… theoretically. Back to school, back to theaters. That’s right: despite Hollywood’s ongoing labor shutdown, new product continues to leech out from the national Don’t-Miss Indies reserves, spilling its way onto screens in art houses cinemas worldwide. And yeah, a piping hot pumpkin-spice latte probably sounds like the last thing you want to consume after a long, hot day on the picket line. But you gotta admit: it’s nice to have the option.
Scouts Honor: The Secret Files Of The Scouts Of America
When You Can Watch: September 6
Where You Can Watch: Netflix
Director: Brian Knappenberger

Wherever The Equalizer franchise goes, an audience has followed.
That was true for the original 1985-89 CBS TV series, and it’s especially true for Antoine Fuqua and Denzel Washington’s newly minted Equalizer trilogy. However, in the five years between The Equalizer 2 and today’s release of The Equalizer 3, a Queen Latifah-led Equalizer series has also come into its own on CBS, becoming one of the most-watched shows on television.
Now, one might assume that the success of the new show provided added reason for the brain trust behind the film series to pursue a proper end to their trilogy, but the reimagined show actually had no bearing on whether Fuqua and Washington finished the story of Robert McCall.
“We absolutely have no connection to that; it wasn’t even in [our] thinking, really,” Fuqua tells The Hollywood Reporter. “We just did one movie at a time,...

Amazon Prime Video has set an Oct. 6 premiere date for its upcoming three-episode docuseries “Desperately Seeking Soulmate: Escaping Twin Flames Universe,” which will spotlight the alleged online love cult run by YouTube influencers Jeff and Shaleia Divine.
Journalist Alice Hines leads the investigative docuseries, which is directed by Marina Zenovich, an Emmy-winner for her “Roman Polanski: Wanted and Desired”
Jeff and Shaleia Divine are the founders the Twin Flames Universe, an online group that promises to match each member with their “soulmate” — going to extreme lengths to do so. “Desperately Seeking Soulmate” is based on Hines’ 2020 Vanity Fair article “Everywhere I Went, They Went With Me, Because They Were on My Phone”: Inside the Always Online, All-Consuming World of Twin Flames Universe, which took a deep dive into the alleged cult (which is still active) that Jeff and Shaleia created online.
The group is particularly controversial for urging members to change their gender identities.
