Acclaimed Brazilian writer-director Alê Abreu, director of the Oscar-nominated “The Boy and the World,” will world premiere his electric feature-length film “Perlimps” at the upcoming Annecy International Animation Film Festival after excerpts from the project were teased as part of the fest’s Works in Progress program last year.
“Perlimps” will screen at Annecy as a Special Event.
The film presents a mythical prism of hues splayed out to create a dense enchanted forest pictured in painterly tropical tones. Amidst the backdrop, two rivals, Claé and Bruó, reluctantly join forces in a bid to save their precious woodland and the Perlimps from giants surrounding the forest and regain peace.
The animated feature’s producers also shared in exclusivity with Variety a new still from the film, which introduces a third character, John Ovenbird, when he meets with Claé and Bruô

In a ceremony marked by laughter, tears, a lot of hugs and a celebration of a return to watching films al vivo, the 36th Guadalajara International Film Festival (Ficg) came to a close with the presentation of a long list of prizes to some of Latin America’s top filmmakers, many whose names are well-known in Mexico and across the region and many whose names will, no doubt, be well-known in the future.
In a contradiction fit for the movies, Rodrigo Guardiola and Gabriel Nuncio’s “The Comedian,” a film all about failure, took top honors as this year’s best Mexican film in competition with cinematographer Mario Secco scooping the best cinematography prize for his work on the film.

“Only in our forest can you sleep in peace,” says Davi Kopenawa, a shaman and elder of the Yanomami community — the indigenous population of the rainforest terrain on the Brazilian-Venezuelan border. His words, enticing as they sound, aren’t an invitation to visitors, but a warning to his own. As the Yanomami’s unchanged, elemental way of life competes with the lure of the developed white world across the river, Kopenawa and his peers will say what they must to discourage younger generations from venturing away, and to keep their thousand-year-old culture intact. There’s more than fusty conservatism at play here, however. History has grimly proven that the white man isn’t merely a threat to the Yanomamis’ collective soul, but their individual bodies.
Luiz Bolognesi’s illuminating, enveloping documentary “The Last Forest” makes these stakes clear, and prizes Kopenawa’s point of view over that of the dazzled observer.

Documentarian Luiz Bolognesi previously considered the situation faced by the indigenous peoples of Brazil's Amazon basin in his 2018 Ex-Shaman and he returns to the theme for his latest film. The Last Forest doesn't just invite us to look at his subjects, the Yanomami tribe, but gives them distinct agency as Bolognesi not only captures their day-to-day comings and goings in the expected observational style but also films them as they act out some of their traditional stories, including their creation beliefs. He worked on these elements with shaman Davi Kopenawa Yanomami - who is an active and world-renowned spokesman for the tribe and who is also seen venturing into what the Yanomami would consider "white people's territory" in order to engage with them over the problems his people are up against.
These threats are manifold, and don't just include the traditional dangers like snakes, which must be scoured for in a river before children.

As the only Brazilian film selected in Berlinale’s Panorama sidebar, documentary “The Last Forest” by Luis Bolognesi hopes to shine a blazing light on the grave issues affecting the Amazon and its indigenous inhabitants.
Since taking office in 2019, populist president Jair Bolsonaro has allowed gold prospectors to exploit these lands despite a law meant to protect them. Deforestation of the Amazon has more than doubled during his tenure. The gold miners have also polluted the waters and brought diseases, including Covid-19, to these remote villages.
“The Last Forest” focuses on the Yanomami tribe who live in the Brazilian-Venezuelan border region, where Bolognesi, an anthropologist-documentarian, combines observational footage with staged sequences developed with shaman Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, one of the most renowned spokespersons for the Yanomami who has spoken at Harvard and before the Swedish and U.K. Parliaments as part of his awareness campaign.

Animated in classic 2D techniques and budgeted at $1.9 million, the animation feature will be produced by Alê Abreu’s Filme de Papel and Laís Bodanzky’s Buriti Filmes. The production company of Abreu, Academy Award-nominated and an Annecy Cristal Award winner for “Boy and the World,” has sealed a production agreement with Buriti, founded by Bodanzky (“Just Our Like Parents”) and Bolognesi, which sees the three producer-directors alternatively producing features directed by another of the partners.

Annecy, France — The opening two minutes, 10 seconds of Gustavo Steinberg’s “Tito and the Birds,” which world premieres in competition Thursday at Annecy, is a powerful snapshot of the forces powering up exponential growth in Brazilian animation.
It is high art, caught in a series of impressionist as a dove flies away from a wall engraving in a primeval cavern, past an Mesopotamia building, a Roman statue and irrigation channel, Spanish galleons, a luxury liner, a city under bombardment. There’s a sweep to its urgent statement on contemporary issues. “This is a story of how fear contaminated the world,” but sense of an outreach to broader audiences in the energy of camera movement, the hint of a horror story to come. Meanwhile, logos of 11 Brazilian state-sector entities feature in the initial credit crawl.

Two decades ago, there was hardly a Brazilian animation industry to speak of. Ten years back, a small handful of stalwart directors were struggling to gain international notoriety and impact TV, festivals and box offices domestically and abroad with low budgets and a lot of hard work. Today, Brazilian animation is thriving on all fronts, and in some cases, is even outpacing live-action in budget and ambition.
In 1951, Brazil’s first-ever animated feature, “Amazon Symphony,” was released; since that time 43 other toon features have joined its ranks. One feature every year-and-a-half is hardly anything to write home about, but according to Marta Machado of Brazilian animation house Otto Desenhos, 19 of those pictures have come in the last five years, and another 25 features are currently in production.
The clearest indicator of Brazil’s ascendance as an international animation force came in 2013 when Annecy, one of the world’s most important animation festivals and markets,...

Brazil’s Directors’ Fortnight entry “Los Silencios” typifies a growing breed of Brazilian films, shot in multiple locations and in co-production with one or more countries. Beatriz Seigner’s cross-border drama about a Colombian family fleeing the armed conflict in their native country was co-produced by Seigner’s Miriade Filmes and Leonardo Mecchi’s Enquadramento Prods. (“The Trial”), along with France’s Cine-Sud Promotion and Colombian shingle Dia-fragma.
“We shot mainly in Colombia so the key crew members were Colombian — and mostly women,” says Cine-Sud’s Thierry Lenouvel, who is co-producing Anita Rocha’s next film, “Medusa,” with Vania Catani’s Bananeira Filmes and is boarding two other Brazilian films in development: Dezenove’s Vietnam-set “The Paths of My Father” by Mauricio Osaki and BossaNovaFilms’ “To Our Children,” by actress-helmer Maria de Medeiros.

Produced by Fabiano Gullane, Walter Salles and Globo Filmes, and unfolding to the strains of Bossa Nova, “Noah’s Ark” has closed brisk pre-sales for Edward Noeltner’s Cinema Management Group (Cmg) off a Berlin Festival launch.
Those deals reflect the status of “Noah’s Ark” – directed by Sérgio Machado (“Lower City”) and with songs and lyrics by Bossa Nova legend Vinicius de Moraes – as both one of the biggest-budgeted of current Brazilian movies and a flagship of its vibrant animation sector, which will receive a tribute at June’s Annecy Festival.
Made in what is now the long run-up to Cannes, deals also underscore Cmg’s making full use of Bordeaux’s Cartoon Movie and Hong Kong’s FilmArt to not only pre-sell “Noah’s Ark” in small-to-midsize territories – a traditional strategy – but position “Noah’s Ark” for the Cannes Festival. Title: Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury Director: Luiz Bolognesi If American animation has, in aggregate, been a bit underwhelming this year, a stirring reminder of the medium’s possibilities arrives in the striking “Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury,” a love story spanning six centuries. Directed by Luiz Bolognesi, the film – not unlike “Cloud Atlas” or “The Fountain,” to name but a couple recent high-profile films which touch upon themes of loss and reincarnation — marries a moody and evocative rumination on human frailty with animation possessing an uncommon lyricism and beauty. Winner of the Best Feature prize at the 2013 Annecy International Animated Film Festival, “Rio 2096″ [ Read More ]
