On day 67 of The Writers Guild of America strike, the cast and creatives behind three popular shows joined the picket lines across Los Angeles.
Bright and early at 9:30 a.m. over at Paramount Studios in Hollywood, there was an Ugly Betty reunion with stars Ana Ortiz and Chris Gorham joining writers Brian Tannen, Gabrielle Stanton, Sheila Lawrence, Chris Black, Henry Myers, Cameron Litvack and Tracy Poust on the special picket.
Ugly Betty, based on the hit Spanish-language novela Betty La Fea, aired for four seasons from 2006 to 2010. America Ferrera portrayed the titular Betty Suarez, an unconventional beauty whose unique sense of style doesn’t preclude her from landing a gig at a top fashion magazine. The project was developed by Silvio Horta for ABC and also starred Mark Indelicato, Eric Mabius, Tony Plana, Becki Newton and Michael Urie.

Two and a Half Men is headed to streaming. The multi-camera comedy, co-created and executive produced by Chuck Lorre, has been sold to NBCUniversal’s upcoming streaming platform Peacock by Warner Bros. Television in a joint deal with another Wbtv sitcom, George Lopez. The announcement is being made at Comcast’s Peacock presentation today.
No details are provided but I hear the deal gives Peacock exclusive Svod rights to the two shows and is valued in the low-to-mid nine-figure range.
Warner Bros. initially had bundled Two and a Half Men with Lorre’s flagship comedy series, The Big Bang Theory. WarnerMedia’s own upcoming streamer, HBO Max, was talks about acquiring both but ultimately picked up only The Big Bang Theory, which joined Friends on the streamer’s acquisition roster, both in mega deals.
Two and a Half Men was subsequently taken out and landed at Peacock, along with George Lopez.

Warning: Spoiler alert! Do not proceed if you have not watched Wednesday’s Blindspot fall finale. You will be sorry. Everyone else, proceed!
What just happened?!
After teasing a double agent among the Blindspot team, the identity of the FBI mole was revealed in the series' fall finale: the unassuming psychiatrist Dr. Robert Borden (Ukweli Roach). Turns out, he had a history with Jane (Jaimie Alexander) years before she was found tatted up in the middle of New York City in the pilot, which turned out to be the catalyst for the creation of Sandstorm. Making matters worse, Borden’s betrayal also effectively ends his romance with Patterson (Ashley Johnson).
Wednesday’s episode also brought Jane’s relationship with her brother, Roman (Luke Mitchell), to new heights. After he chose not to kill his sister at Shepherd’s (Michelle Hurd) request, Roman immediately seemed to regret his choice -- to the point where Jane made the decision...

Exclusive: Golden Boys? Three decades after Golden Girls‘ successful 173-episode run on NBC, ABC is developing an ensemble comedy about people in retirement age, this time on the male side. The project, from The Neighbors creator Dan Fogelman and The George Lopez Show co-creator Robert Borden, revolves around three long-lost basketball teammates who reconnect in their 60s and discover they still have a lot to learn about love and friendship. Borden is writing and will executive produce with Fogelman through Fogelman’s Rhode Island Ave. Prods and ABC Studios. It is good timing for the project, coming on the heels of a weekend where three opening movies featured stars over 60: Fogelman-penned comedy Last Vegas (Robert De Niro, Morgan Freeman, Michael Douglas and Kevin Kline) and dramas Ender’s Game (Harrison Ford) and All Is Lost (Robert Redford). With the baby boomers entering retirement, there is a growing audience for entertainment featuring more mature stars,...

Outsourced producer Robert Borden has insisted that the show has a good chance of being renewed. He told the Los Angeles Times that a decision on the sitcom's future will likely be made in May. "I feel really good about where we are creatively with the show," he claimed. "It doesn't have any of that first-year 'get out the kinks [and] have a bad half-season' kind of situation." He added that the first season of Outsourced, which will conclude on May 12, will be "finishing strong". "As far as what the network thinks, I know (more)...

"Outsourced" is a sly, fish-out-of-water comedy on NBC's Thursday night institutional comedy block, nestled in with "The Office," "Community" and " 30 Rock." ("Parks and Recreation" returns midseason.) Loosely based on a 2006 independent film by John Jeffcoat, this charming series, written by Robert Borden and Executive produced by Victor Nelli Jr. stars Ben Rappaport as Todd, a salesman for a Kansas City novelty company whose boss Jerry Stern (Matt Walsh) sends him packing to the subcontinent to head their newly outsourced call center and school his team in Mumbai the art of selling jiggle boobs, foam cheeseheads, toilet-shaped coffee mugs, and fake poo (and its ilk). Just as "My Name is Earl" poked a big stick...

Chicago – It seems that NBC is getting some of their “Must See TV” mojo back, after adding the hilarious “Community” to the Thursday night comedy line-up last year and debuting the equally stellar “Outsourced’ this year, which premieres September 23rd at 8:30pm Cst.
Television Rating: 5.0/5.0
The timing on this show is auspicious, as America still copes with the outsourcing of jobs to far-flung places such as India. Here it is the familiar call center, where a joke items and novelties company from Kansas City has moved all of their order facilities. It is a fresh faced American manager named Todd (Ben Rappaport) that is called upon to get the new Indian office to produce, and there are nice levels of satire, humor and heart in a pilot chock full of laughs.
Todd is definitely a fish out of water as he assesses and sizes up his new charges. His...

The producers of NBC's new comedy 'Outsourced' (premiering Thursday, September 23 at 9:30Pm Et) have had to deal with criticisms that most sitcom producers haven't had to deal with. When the original pilot went out to critics, for instance, the show was lambasted for its jokes based on easy Indian stereotypes. But another issue came out that even critics couldn't anticipate: how the issue of outsourcing American jobs to foreign lands is still a sensitive one, especially given the continued soft job market.
But executive producers Bob Borden and Ken Kwapis have taken pains to tell anyone who will listen that 'Outsourced' is more a workplace comedy than anything else. "Cultural jokes won't carry the weight they do in the pilot, in terms of possibly offending people, because we'll have well-rounded characters as we learn about everyone," Borden told me earlier this month.

Now that September is here the networks are in the final sprint for the new 2010-2011 season. If you watch TV you probably will have seen many of these shows advertised. The new season lineup includes inevitable staples (classic cop and legal dramas) and more peculiar blends (The Shield’s Michael Chiklis in a family series playing a dad with superpowers, for example); some legendary names (Jj Abrams, Shawn Ryan, Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg) and many fresh faces. A few shows like The Event (NBC), Running Wilde (Fox), Broadwalk Empire (HBO) or The Walking Dead (AMC) have already created buzz. For now, however, all of them are pure potential, waiting for their chance to conquer primetime. But despite any hopes or expectations, the only thing certain is that, among all of these promising shows, very few will make it to the second season mark.

The producers of new NBC comedy Outsourced have denied that the series exploits racial and cultural stereotypes. The show's pilot includes a scene in which American call-centre boss Todd (Ben Rappaport) mocks the name of his Indian co-worker Manmeet (Sacha Dhawan). However, executive producer Robert Borden told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour that the show's humour would not poke fun at cultural differences. "I think where we approach this is certainly not a mean-spirited place," he explained, "and a lot of us have a life experience (more)...

We critics are a sensitive bunch. We try to think like the audiences who will watch the shows we review, and try to pick out what we think people may like or dislike. But often we're wrong, mainly because we forget that, through it all, it's our opinion that we're writing here.
I mention this because 'Outsourced' came to the TCA press tour in the same situation as CBS's 'Mike & Molly' did two days ago. Critics threw questions at the producers about 'Mike & Molly' being one long fat joke. Today, producers Ken Kwapis and Robert Borden basically got the same questions, only about the fact that many thought the 'Outsourced' pilot was one long Indian joke.
They insisted it wasn't, even though there's three different jokes about the name "Manmeet." It's a workplace comedy at its core, they say, one...

The new series (based on the 2006 indie film of the same name) centers on the all-American Novelties company whose call center has suddenly been outsourced to India. Todd Dempsy (Ben Rappaport) is the new company’s manager who learns that he’s being transferred to India to run the operation. Overwhelmed, Todd discovers that his new staff needs a crash course in all things American if they are to understand the U.S. product line and ramp up sales from halfway around the world. Robert Borden (The Drew Carey Show) is executive producer/writer. Ken Kwapis (The Office) developed the project through his company, In Cahoots, and serves as executive producer/director. Sure the concept isn't new but it looks fun. Coming thursdays this fall on NBC.

NBC has picked up three more new series for next season -- a drama called "The Event" and a pair of comedies, "Outsourced" and "Love Bites."
The three shows join fellow newcomer "Undercovers" on the network's 2010-11 schedule and in taking some of the suspense out of NBC's May 17 presentation. A couple more new shows are likely to join the lineup as well as NBC continues remaking its prime-time slate following the Jay Leno experiment.

Welcome to your Friday morning television briefing. Maria Bello, Simon Beaufoy, and Russell Crowe have teamed up to develop HBO drama project Emergency Sex, based on Kenneth Cain, Heidi Postlewait and Andrew Thomson's nonfiction book "Emergency Sex and Other Desperate Measures: A True Story From Hell on Earth," about "the larger-than-life exploits of expatriate nongovernment-organization workers who find their sanity tested in the face of atrocities, loneliness and primal desires." Bello (A History of Violence) will star in the project, which is being adapted by Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire), who will executive produce with Bellow, Russell Crowe, and John Carrabino. (Hollywood Reporter) NBC has handed out pilot orders to two projects, both hailing from Universal Media Studios. NBC on Thursday picked up two more pilots: hourlong "The Cape" and the comedy "Outsourced."
"Cape," from "Empire" creator Tom Wheeler, is a light drama with a comic book sensibility. Set in a fictionalized version of Los Angeles, it centers on a former cop framed for a crime who becomes the Cape, a masked hero, to clear his name and reunite with his son.
The project, from Ums and BermanBraun, was set up at NBC in the fall with a premium script commitment.
Wheeler wrote the script and is exec producing with Lloyd Braun and Gail Berman.
Based on George Wing and John Jeffcoat's indie movie, "Outsourced" is single-camera office comedy centered on a recently demoted manager of a novelties company who is shipped off to India to manage a ragtag group of customer service reps.
NBC originally developed "Outsourced" during the 2007-08 season with Wing and Jeffcoat writing...

It took a while, but NBC is finally ready to get "Outsourced."
The network today ordered a pilot for a TV version of the 2006 indie feature, with Ken Kwapis ("The Office") on board to direct. "Outsourced" was first given a script order back in fall 2007; since then, Robert Borden ("The Drew Carey Show") came on board to write.
Check out the trailer for the original "Outsourced" here. Plus, keep track of all of today's pickups -- including one from Berman/Braun -- updated as they come in:

CBS has given a script commitment to an untitled comedy co-created by and featuring "Reaper" star Bret Harrison. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the project comes from Universal Media Studios and Scott Stuber's Stuber Productions and will be written by "George Lopez" co-creator Robert Borden from a story he co-wrote with Harrison. The multi-camera comedy focuses on a pair of district attorneys -- one, a twentysomething, played by Harrison, and the other in his 40s -- who find themselves fighting over the same woman. Hilarity ensues. Harrison spent the past two season as Sam Oliver, the Devil's bounty hunter, on...

In a sign that the ice between CBS and NBC Universal is thawing in the wake of NBC canceling the veteran CBS Studios-produced drama "Medium" in May, CBS has picked up a comedy project from Universal Media Studios headlined and co-created by "Reaper" star Bret Harrison.
The untitled project, which has received a script commitment, marks one of the first forays into television for feature producer Scott Stuber, whose Stuber Prods. has been ramping up TV development during the past several months under former 20th TV comedy head Quan Phung.
The multicamera comedy, based on an original idea by Harrison, revolves around two district attorneys -- one in his 20s (Harrison), the other in his 40s -- and the woman between them.
"It's about smart, logical lawyers who realize that logic doesn't work well in the messy and emotional realities of life," Harrison said.

It's fiesta time on the set of ABC's George Lopez. The network has given a full-season order to the sophomore Latino family sitcom from Warner Bros. Television. With the back-nine order of George Lopez, from executive producers Bruce Helford, Sandra Bullock, Deborah Oppenheimer and Robert Borden, ABC has secured all of its comedies through the end of the season. "Since its midseason premiere last year, 'George Lopez' has developed into a terrific performer for ABC," ABC entertainment president Susan Lyne said. "Its dominance Wednesday nights at 8:30 -- and its retention of the Wife and Kids lead-in each week -- has helped solidify our comedy strength on the night."...
