One of the first films I ever covered in my career was The Signal (2007), which was co-directed by David Bruckner, Dan Bush, and Jacob Gentry, so it’s been a real pleasure to follow this trio’s career paths over the last 13 or so years. And Gentry’s latest directorial endeavor, Broadcast Signal Intrusion, celebrated its world premiere earlier this week as part of the 2021 edition of the SXSW Film Festival.
Recently, Daily Dead had the opportunity to speak with Gentry about his involvement with Broadcast Signal Intrusion, infusing this fictional story with real-world elements, utilizing the year 1999 as the backdrop for this paranoia-fueled tech thriller, his experiences collaborating with the film’s star Harry Shum Jr., and more.
Great to speak with you again, Jacob. I know this is based on a real occurrence that happened in Chicago in the late '80s, which is where I grew up.

This is it, finally, the end of the 2020 presidential election cycle. But we’still got Nov. 3 itself, and the final showdown between Joe Biden and Donald Trump, to get out of the way. PBS NewsHour will be there, as it always is, with a huge dedicated programming bloc on Tuesday’s Election Night that will be freely available to stream so long as you’ve got an internet connection and a device that can access it.
The PBS NewsHour Election Night special — which doesn’t have any kind of grandiose, catchy name — will begin at 6 p.m. Et/3 p.m. Pt, an hour before the first polls close on the East Coast and the results start to roll in. NewsHour managing editor Judy Woodruff will be running the show.

One of three directors who first won attention with 2007’s excellent three-part thriller “The Signal” (not to be confused with another enterprising sci-fi-tinged indie of that title from 2014), Dan Bush has made several interesting genre features on his own since then. Like cloning fantasy “The Reconstruction of William Zero” and bank robbery-turned-monster movie “The Vault,” his latest film intrigues with an offbeat premise even if it ultimately doesn’t develop to fully satisfying results.
Once again co-written with cast member Conal Byrne, “The Dark Red” is or even come to full fruition individually. Nonetheless, this quasi-horror mixed bag will hold viewers’ attention for its originality even as it flags in both credibility and suspense. Dark Sky is releasing the movie on five U.S. screens March 6, simultaneous with its digital-format launch. It should do well enough among genre fans — who nonetheless will be kept waiting a bit longer for Bush...

Writer/director Dan Bush and writer Conal Byrne team for the third time, following The Reconstruction of William Zero (2014) and The Vault (2017) with The Dark Red, which tells the story of Sybil – a woman who is being held against her will in a psychiatric ward because her claims are extreme. She says her newborn baby was kidnapped by a secret society to harvest its supernatural blood. She says her families bloodline means her baby has, like her, great psychic powers – including the ability to hear other people’s thoughts. Tagline: "The Scariest Thing About Her Story is that No One Believes It." The Dark Red is the latest film from director Dan Bush. The film relies on a bit of an unreliable narrator as she relives a troubled past. Believing she has a rare, supernatural blood type, this character opens up about a personal tragedy to a psychologist. This title stars: April Billingsley ("The Walking Dead"), Kelsey Scott (How to Get Away with Murder) and Rhoda Griffis. Recently, Dark Sky Films picked up this release for a showing on Digital platforms. The film's official poster and trailer are hosted here. A few early reviews have come in for the film, from the UK's Frightfest Film Festival. Phil Wheat of Nerdly mentions how director Bush has improved over several films and that The Dark Red is one of his best to date: "with The Dark Red Bush seems to have hit his stride.

I’ve got a trailer here for you to watch today from an awesome-looking psychological supernatural thriller called The Dark Red. The film comes from director Dan Bush. He previously made a sci-fi thriller called The Signal, which was a fantastic mind-bending movie, and this new one looks like it’s going to deliver another crazy cool story!
The film stars April Billingsley, who plays a young woman who is committed to a psychiatric hospital and claims her newborn was stolen by a dark cult. Here’s the synopsis that was shared for the film:
Sybil is being held against her will in a psychiatric ward because her claims are extreme. She says her newborn baby was kidnapped by a secret society to harvest its supernatural blood. She says the ancient bloodline has great powers - it lets you hear other people’s thoughts. And she begs the doctors to...

"Are you hearing anything or... seeing anything out of the ordinary?" Signature Entertainment in the UK has unveiled the first official trailer for a cult thriller, psychological horror film titled The Dark Red, the latest from genre filmmaker Dan Bush. The film stars April Billingsley as a young woman who is committed to a psychiatric hospital and claims her newborn was stolen by a dark cult, a "secret society to harvest its supernatural blood". But is it true or is she just delusional? The film is described as an "seat-edge twisted shocker" that premiered at the Austin Film Festival late last year, but is still waiting for an official release in the Us. The cast includes Conal Byrne, Bernard Setaro Clark, Jill Jane Clements, John Curran, Rhoda Griffis, and Kelsey Scott. This trailer gets pretty violent and bloody (since there's no MPAA restrictions playing a UK trailer) so watch out.

David Bruckner’s The Ritual is a harrowing blend of fierce and folksy horror, but also comes with a tingle of Fomo. How, you ask? Track back to 2007, when Bruckner teamed with Dan Bush and Jacob Gentry to dial-in their shared narrative The Signal (three directors, three “transmissions”). Between then and The Ritual we’ve seen two Bruckner visions in the form of (fan favorite) anthology segments – “Amateur Night” (V/H/S) and “The Accident” (Southbound) – yet no solo project. Quite simply, The Ritual is too tight and polished for a “feature-length debut,” but that’s what it *technically* is. Genre fans, we’ve been robbed of boatloads more Bruckner these past years (case and point: where the Hell is Brucker’s Friday The 13th).

It’s more than likely this is the first time you’ve heard of such an unusual genre blend, between heist and supernatural thriller; and that’s exactly the idea. From the offset, The Vault seems to create its own style in theming. We see all the same cues from heist and crime movies we’re used to, yet things get interesting when our bank robbers go downstairs.
Though not overly impressive in cinematography, clear thought has gone into the film’s theming and style. We can view all the themes from each respective genre, thus their parallels, and finally their merges – the builds in suspense, and the horror of hostages & supernatural drama all combine together to create a unique feel around the movie that comes across impressive. Further, production narrative is clear – the past of each character left ambiguous which only adds to the interest in each character which...

“The Town meets Sixth Sense,” they claim in the press blurb. Even if that were a good idea on paper, the result is a useless genre train crash with very little to satisfy fans of the heist thriller or the supernatural character study. In the end it manages to conjure a twist so dumb it makes the whole movie seem retrospectively worse – and that’s saying something.
Opening with the tried and trusted cliché of a desperate 911 call, The Vault is a rollercoaster ride of tired tropes. For a false dawn we get a reasonably tense, wordless opening sequence in which the pieces fall into play on the game board: a gang of robbers, led by Leah (Francesca Eastwood), gathering in a bank to make a right royal scene,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… Psychologically risible and paranormally inconsistent heist horror gives us not a single character to like or root for, or even to cheer dying. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing

The worst criminal gang ever — unprofessional, unprepared, and rife with in-fighting — is robbing a bank. A bank that turns out to be haunted. Which they might have learned if they’d bothered to do the slightest bit of research, because it’s pretty much all anyone at the bank will talk about given the tiniest provocation. Whatever entertaining possibilities that heisting a ghoul-infested bank vault might offer are entirely overlooked by writer (with Conal Byrne) and director Dan Bush (The Reconstruction of William Zero), who employs the minimal level of imagination required to shuffle his unappealing characters through 90 minutes of shouting at one another and then dying,...

The movie stars James Franco as Ed Maas, an assistant bank manager who promises to help guide the sisters through the... Read More...

The trailer for the action-packed supernatural heist thriller, The Vault, has arrived starring James Franco and Clifton Collins.
The trailer follows James Franco, who looks like he is bearing the world’s problems on his shoulders, suited and booted as assistant bank manager Ed Maas as he assists The Dillon sisters as they embark on a heist of the bank in which they get a whole lot more than they bargained for.
Filled with tension building music, meandering along the long dark corridors of the basement of the bank, in which holds the big money lays a spooky and sinister secret, laden with the chilling laughter of children and an equally chilling shadowy figure the desperate ladies of the heist just might not get out of this one alive.

The Vault blends a heist and the supernatural. In the film, two sisters must make some quick cash. But, they have no idea what is hiding in the basement. The Vault stars: James Franco, Taryn Manning, Francesca Eastwood and Scott Haze. FilmRise will distribute the film in the United States, this September. And director Dan Bush (The Signal, 2007) has described The Vault as "an action-packed supernatural heist thriller." The film's official trailer is hosted here. The trailer reveals more than the synopsis. In the clip, Franco plays bank employee Ed. He knows what lays in wait, below the floor. He encourages the robbers to investigate a rusted old vault. But, he does not warn them about what lays behind the solid steel. The tables are quickly turned as the sisters must face a haunting below and the police officers outside. The Vault is set to release in a couple of territories.

Here's a fun trailer for an interesting looking Heist film that also happens to be a horror movie. The film is called The Vault and it stars James Franco. I like the unique concept of the film with its bank robbery horror movie plot and it looks like it could be a good movie! Here's the synopsis:
Two estranged sisters (Taryn Manning, Francesca Eastwood) are forced to rob a bank in order to save their brother. The heist begins smoothly, but mayhem ensues when the defiant bank manager sends them to a basement-level vault—home to something truly evil.
The Vault was directed by filmmaker Dan Bush (Ghost of Old Highways, The Reconstruction of William Zero). The movie is set to be released on September 1st. Check out the trailer and let us know if the movie interests you.

"There's people down here!" What the heck is in the vault? FilmRise has debuted an official trailer for a film called The Vault, a bank robbery heist thriller that actually turns into some kind of weird horror film. The film stars Taryn Manning and Francesca Eastwood as two estranged sisters who must rob a bank in order to save their brother. But down in the vault, they discover something "truly evil" because "this is no ordinary bank." Uh oh. The cast includes James Franco, Scott Haze, Q'orianka Kilcher, Jeff Gum, and Clifton Collins Jr. This looks pretty weird, and not in a good way. Not sure I've ever heard of a bank heist horror movie before, but perhaps that is why they decided to make this. Check it out if you're curious. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for Dan Bush's The Vault, direct from YouTube: Two estranged sisters (Taryn Manning,...

Geez, in the time it takes for you to get up and get your morning cup of coffee, James Franco has probably finished a role in yet another movie. The actor and filmmaker, who clearly doesn’t rest, has turned up in “The Vault,” a movie we barely knew existed. Even more, it’s on its way to theaters.
Directed by Dan Bush (“The Signal“), and also starring Taryn Manning, Francesca Eastwood, Clifton Collins Jr.

Exclusive: Content’s Afm slate includes Jon Brewer’s Beside Bowie: The Mick Ronson Story.
Content Media has acquired worldwide sales rights to the timely music documentary, Beside Bowie: The Mick Ronson Story.
President of film Jamie Carmichael and executive vice-president of sales and distribution Jonathan Ford are introducing Jon Brewer’s film to the market this week.
While the film is expected to capitalise on global fascination for the late David Bowie himself, who died in January this year, the subject is his frequent collaborator and guitar virtuoso Ronson.
As a member of Bowie’s backing band The Spiders From Mars in the early 1970’s, Ronson contributed to some of the most iconic compositions, lyrics and recordings in contemporary music.
He recorded several solo albums and also earned a reputation as a sought-after session musician who played with Ian Hunter, Lou Reed and Morrissey and toured with Bob Dylan and Van Morrison.

Written and directed by Jacob Gentry, Synchronicity is an ambitious neo-noir time travel yarn that feels like a companion piece to Gentry’s first sci-fi feature, The Signal (which he co-directed with David Bruckner and Dan Bush). Both deal with fractured timelines to a degree, but it's his latter that proves Gentry’s keen ability to manipulate popular tropes all while creating a complex and intricate story. The film takes a bit of time to find its footing, but when it does, that’s when Synchronicity evolves into something rather special. On par with films like Timecrimes, Predestination or even Primer to a degree, Synchronicity once again proves that you don’t need a huge budget to create a compelling cinematic experience.
Synchronicity follows a beleaguered scientist by the name of Jim Beale (Chad McKnight) who, along with team members Chuck (Aj Bowen) and Matty (Scott Poythress), have invented a...

Not many filmmakers can turn heads with a single release, but Jacob Gentry earned his must-watch potential after striking gold with 2007’s The Signal (a shared effort with David Bruckner and Dan Bush). All eyes were on what Gentry would do next, which ended up being a three-part slasher franchise on MTV known as My Super Psycho Sweet 16 – which, admittedly, weren’t the worst. But his televised splatterfests didn’t showcase Gentry’s full potential, which makes Synchronicity all that much sweeter a return for the ambitious indie auteur. Once again Gentry explodes with genre vibrancy (Sci-fi this time), as we’re transported to a metallic future that’s molded into an engrossing cinematic universe. Gentry does more than make movies, he builds entire worlds. It’s immersion in the fullest form.

Less Than Zero: Bush’s Blend is a Well-intended but Exhaustive Piece
Drama stimulated by an identity crisis set against a science fiction backdrop poses for great entertainment. Co-writer/director Dan Bush is earnest in choosing the right elements and parameters that promise reward when the cymbals crash. However, this particular mixture of character drama and science fiction creates a friction that shifts sporadically and quickly fizzles out. The Reconstruction of William Zero stretches itself in the attempt to hit all of the marks of its predecessors while attempting to cover new ground, ultimately making it difficult to look past its thin veneer.
William Blakely (co-writer Conal Bryne) wakes up from under a machine with no memory as to who he is or why he is there. His caretaker, his identical twin (also Conal Bryne), shares with him footage of old home movies, teaches him how to walk again...

Director Dan Bush’s latest effort The Reconstruction of William Zero is a sci-fi drama that’s much heavier on the drama than on the sci-fi. It’s a film about loss and the lengths to which we will go to stop feeling grief. It’s a film about the dissolution of marriage and about facing death. It might be unbearably sad if it weren’t so well made.
Conal Byrne plays William, a geneticist and married father who one day wakes from a coma with hardly any memory of his own life. There to help him recover is a man who looks exactly like him and has unique knowledge of William’s life, including the tragedy in his past that led to a split from his wife Jules (Amy Seimetz, A Horrible Way to Die). The more William learns about himself, the more he begins to understand just how...
