Henry Cavill is being thrust back into the James Bond casting conversation on social media thanks to a viral fake movie trailer partially created by AI that imagines the former “Superman” actor as 007 and Margot Robbie as his Bond girl. In four days, the AI-generated trailer garnered over 2.5 million views on YouTube and further stoked fan interest in Cavill being named the new Bond following Daniel Craig’s departure in 2021’s “No Time to Die.”
As fate would have it, Cavill’s next role is Gus March-Phillipps in Guy Ritchie’s “The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare.” March-Phillipps was a real historical figure who founded the British Army’s No. 62 Commando and who some believe inspired author Ian Fleming to create James Bond. Cavill’s history with 007 dates back to “Casino Royale,” when he auditioned for the role of 007 but lost to Craig.

It might be fair to say that the James Bond role has always been elusive to Henry Cavill. After losing to Daniel Craig in 2006’s Casino Royale as he was too young and inexperienced, the actor is now being doubted to join the franchise because he’s already 40.

Daniel Craig breathed fresh life into James Bond, the iconic British spy that Ian Fleming created. The actor took the character and put a different spin on it, and it was clear from the get-go in Casino Royale.
The film’s success exceeded expectations, and Craig’s outing as the protagonist was greatly appreciated too. He donned the skin of the character with panache and delivered a memorable performance. Moreover, the film established a trend after 19 years, that its predecessors had deviated from.

Henry Cavill’s new movie, The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, has a surprising link to 007. Set to release this April, the film is loosely based on the real-life exploits of the Special Operations Executive (Soe), a covert British organization crucial to the Allied victory.

Craig’s performance as the character is critically acclaimed, and some even call his portrayal the best ever. However, it might surprise one that Craig was initially hesitant to take on the role. While he might have been a bit reluctant to don that iconic tuxedo, the producers knew exactly what the movie needed and managed to have him on board.

What are the best action movies of all time? It’s a controversial question, isn’t it? Any time any publication or site puts out a new list of what they consider the greatest action movies of all time, it can’t help but generate a ton of controversy. Nevertheless, we here at JoBlo have decided to throw our hats into the ring with a list we really hope generates some nostalgia among our viewers but also encourages them to seek out the movies on this list that they may not have seen. But first, some may wonder where superhero movies are on this list. Given how broad that genre is, we decided to stick to old-school action, so we have left them off the list, as they deserve their own ranking. There are also a few absences from the list, notably some Jackie Chan films, with those to follow in another planned list,...

Daisy Ridley, known best as Rey in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy, has had a pretty fascinating career outside of a galaxy far, far away. From narrating documentaries to failed YA sci-fi adaptations, she's certainly spread her wings. Later this year, Ridley will get the chance to lead a straight-up action flick called "Cleaner." It sounds like a riff on "Die Hard" from director Martin Campbell, who directed two of the greatest "James Bond" movies ever made. We may not even have a trailer yet, but it sounds very much like the film is going to live up to the promise of the talent involved.
The actor was on hand at this year's SXSW film festival in Austin, Texas, to promote her new movie "Magpie." During a panel, Ridley got to talking about some of her more physically demanding roles as of late, including the upcoming Disney drama "Young Woman and the Sea.

Cillian Murphy is currently wreaking havoc in Hollywood. After his fan-favorite role as Tommy Shelby, which made him a heartthrob overnight, he has delivered yet another mind-blowing (or atom-bomb-blowing!) performance as J. Robert Oppenheimer in Oppenheimer, becoming the entertainment industry’s newest hotshot — to the point where he is even being eyed to play James Bond!
Cillian Murphy on a talk show
According to recent reports by insiders, Murphy is apparently being eyed by producers who are all set to start the next Bond movie. While Murphy would be an iconic choice, no doubt, what’s surprising is the fact that he is being considered for the peerless spy role at 47 years of age while Henry Cavill was deemed too old to play Agent 007 even at the age of 40!

One month ago, heading into the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, the most anticipated title for buyers was not necessarily the action-adventure anthology with Pedro Pascal (Freaky Tales) or the Kristen Stewart-fronted post-apocalyptic love story (Love Me). It was Dídi, a coming-of-age film about a 13-year-old in the Bay Area from a first-time feature director with no notable U.S. stars. It quickly landed a deal with Focus Features, while films with shinier stars and higher concepts are still in negotiations for deals.

It's been a good two years since Daniel Craig's swan song as James Bond, "No Time to Die" and its divisive ending debuted in theaters. But even before Craig's finale arrived, rumors continued to swirl that Henry Cavill was still in the running to take on the role following Craig's retirement. The "Man of Steel" actor had almost clinched the role back in the early 2000s when longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson were casting for 2006's "Casino Royale." Unfortunately for Cavill, he just lost out to Craig -- who reinvigorated the franchise with a fresh take on England's greatest spy.
Cavill has since remained a favorite to play Bond, despite the fact that he's now 40 and would have been in his early 20s the last time he came close to being cast. He's even spoken openly about what he would have done in the role,...

Daisy Ridley is having quite the year so far. Her new movie, Sometimes I Think About Dying, released in theaters earlier this month and is receiving positive notes. Recently, I wrote an article about how Ron Howard’s Cocoon was hard to find in any format. It came out on DVD many years ago but went out of print and has never been issued on Blu-ray. You also can’t find it digitally on any platform. This is a perfect example of why you should always hang on to your physical media, as I’m lucky enough to own the now out-of-print DVD of that movie, and while it’s far from an ideal copy, it’s something.
But that got me thinking. What other movies are hard to find? I opened up the forum on Twitter, and I was shocked by how many prominent films aren’t available digitally and have gone out of print on disc, making them all the more precious for collectors. At the same time, there are some happy endings, such as Martin Campbell’s No Escape,...

With The Mask of Zorro, Antonio Banderas truly marked himself as a genuine star and sex symbol across the globe. While he earned acclaim for his collaborations with Pedro Almodóvar in Spain and made his presence known in the States with Philadelphia and Interview with the Vampire, The Mask of Zorro was his first leading role to near $100 million at the domestic box office. But the iconic swordsman almost had another man behind the mask: Tom Cruise.

Martin Campbell's "The Mask of Zorro" is one of the most rousing adventure films of the 1990s, a bracing throwback to old-school Errol Flynn swashbucklers that dazzles with masterfully staged sword fights. Perhaps most importantly, it's powered by an emotionally resonant narrative that raises the stakes sky-high, leading to a breathtaking climax that had audiences cheering all three times I saw the film theatrically.
Antonio Banderas is absolute perfection as Alejandro Murrieta, a rakish outlaw who becomes the unlikely successor to Anthony Hopkins' Don Diego de la Vega, aka Zorro. The film gods are a fickle bunch. If the flip of the coin had landed on a different outcome at various points in Hollywood history, the entire landscape of cinema as we know it could be completely changed. In fact, movie star Tom Cruise is something of a cottage industry to himself when it comes to major roles that he could've signed on for, but ended up little more than fascinating notes of trivia -- in our universe, at least. There's the infamous "Iron Man" scenario that could've seen him suit up as Tony Stark instead of Robert Downey, Jr., of course, along with the near-miss of starring in the classic "Shawshank Redemption." But there's one other little-known factoid that completes this little trilogy of alternate-history Cruise projects: one where he could've been cast as the lead of "The Mask of Zorro," incredibly enough.

Martin Campbell's "GoldenEye" is one of the most important films in the history of the James Bond franchise. The series had been mothballed for six years after the box office disappointment of "License to Kill" in 1989, which brought the two-film Timothy Dalton era to a premature halt. While producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson searched for Dalton's successor, the world went through a rapid metamorphosis. The Berlin Wall fell in 1989, precipitating the end of the Warsaw Pact and the breakup of the Soviet Union. The Cold War was over. The West won. Where did Bond fit in this new world order?
Old hostilities die hard, especially in spy fiction, so it's no surprise that screenwriters Jeffrey Caine and Bruce Feirstein (working from a story by Michael France) concocted a Russia-centric adventure revolving around an electromagnetic weapon that would plunge the Cold War victors into a global financial crisis.

Martin Campbell is directing. The film will shoot at the top of 2024 and falls under the British Equity act allowing it to shoot during the current SAG strike.
The timely action-thriller, set in present-day London, will see radical activists take over an energy company’s annual gala at the Shard – the tallest skyscraper in Western Europe – seizing 300 hostages in order to expose the corruption of the hosts. Mads Mikkelsen has become synonymous with blockbuster franchise villains, playing bad guys in everything from “Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore” to “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.” The Danish actor has been open about the fact that his steady tentpole work has afforded him the creative freedom to pursue more challenging projects. But if one plane ride had gone slightly differently, his blockbuster career could have been over before it truly began with “Casino Royale.”
In an appearance at the Zurich Film Festival (via Variety), Mikkelsen revealed that he lost his script for the Daniel Craig-led James Bond movie on a flight. He recalled that he was afraid that he would be blackballed from Hollywood if the script, which had his name on it, was leaked and the movie was spoiled.

To state a very true, indisputable thing right up front: Pierce Brosnan is the best James Bond (in my opinion). What's more, Martin Campbell's 1995 entry "GoldenEye" is one of the three best of all the James Bond movies, and Roger Spottiswoode's 1997 film "Tomorrow Never Dies" is nothing to sneeze at. Indeed, watching "Tomorrow Never Died" in 2023 posits an eerily accurate trajectory of the future computer technology, and its Steve Jobs-like villain Elliot Carver (Jonathan Pryce) easily predicts the culture of I'm-always-right tech-bros we currently find ourselves mired in.
Briefly, the villain in "Tomorrow Never Dies" seeks to digitally control the flow of information, making him a soft-spoken, cyber-jacked version of William Randolph Hearst. He aims to start a war between China and England, hoping to secure broadcasting rights in China for the rest of his life. In 1997, such a plot seemed both hopelessly nerdy and legitimately terrifying.

Don’t trust Mads Mikkelsen with your script.
“‘Casino Royale’ was the first screenplay with my name on every single page. Which also means that if you lose it, it’s on you. I got on a plane, started to read it and I fell asleep. Then I got out and just left it there,” he told the stunned audience at the Zurich Film Festival.
“I was lucky some cleaning person threw it away and didn’t know what it was. That could have been the end of my career, right then.”
In Martin Campbell’s 2006 smash that marked Daniel Craig’s debut as 007, Mikkelsen went on to play Le Chiffre.
“The ‘smartest’ Bond villain? He lost $100 million to a man who couldn’t play poker. Not that smart.”
“I had never watched a Bond movie up to that point and of course I lied about it. I only...

Prior to news landing this weekend that the Writers Guild of America (WGA) and AMPTP have reached a tentative agreement to end the 146-day writer’s strike, US sellers were busy future-proofing the AFM should both Hollywood strikes still be in full force by the time the market kicked off on October 31.

Throughout the 60 years James Bond has been on the big screen, there's been no shortage of casting controversies associated with the franchise. For 1974's "The Man with the Golden Gun," producers cast Christopher Lee in the role of villain Francisco Scaramanga, much to the chagrin of some behind the scenes. Writer Tom Mankiewicz even claimed to have "begged and pleaded" for them to find anyone else, mainly because he'd originally envisioned Jack Palance in the role.
Even Bond himself caused casting issues. When writer Ian Fleming and producers Albert Broccoli and Harry Saltzman were casting 007 for "Dr. No," they all had a sense that Sean Connery was the man for the job. But before he was offered the part, he would have to screen test, which he ultimately agreed to do despite pushing back initially. Daniel Craig’s debated attractiveness put a target on his back as the new James Bond while casting “Casino Royale,” according to “GoldenEye” helmer Martin Campbell.
The director, who remained part of the 007 casting team, told Express UK that Craig didn’t follow in the “traditional” look of Bond as embodied by past franchise stars Sean Connery and Pierce Brosnan, for whom Craig was taking over.
“My only reticence with Daniel…he was really a superb actor, there’s no doubt about that…It was the fact that with people like Sean Connery, Roger Moore, and Pierce Brosnan was that they were all traditional looking Bonds: all handsome guys, all sexy, all very attractive to women and so forth,” Campbell said.
He added, “Daniel was obviously tougher and ruggeder, but he wasn’t a traditional handsome guy. So I just thought about that for a minute and apart from that,...

Imagine thinking Daniel Craig isn’t “sexy” enough to play James Bond. That’s madness of the highest order. Craig oozes swagger whether he’s foiling a plot for world domination or solving crimes as Benoit Blanc. Still, Casino Royale director Martin Campbell had concerns about casting Craig as the legendary British superspy after Pierce Brosnan lit up screens.

“Casino Royale” director Martin Campbell recently told Express UK that he was concerned Daniel Craig wasn’t sexy enough to be James Bond when his name was thrown into the ring to replace Pierce Brosnan as 007. The filmmaker had previously directed Brosnan in the beloved 1995 Bond tentpole “GoldenEye” and was returning to the franchise at the time to launch a new 007 following Brosnan’s exit after 2002’s “Die Another Day.”

The world was a drastically different place when the James Bond film series kicked off in 1962 with "Dr. No." Gender roles were still set in stone. It was a man's world, one in which women were expected to keep a clean and orderly house while the breadwinner put in his forty hours a week. Should a woman seek employment outside of the home, it's because they were single and could type or file up a storm.
In movies, unmarried women tended to be tragic figures or femme fatales (when they weren't queens or goddesses). If they weren't desperate for a good man to make them whole, they were hellbent on compromising and destroying one. Or they were tools of wealthy, nefarious men, like the Bond girls. Beginning with Ursula Andress' Honey Ryder, the Bond girl was typically a femme fatale who helplessly fell for the British secret agent's rough charm...

In the 90s, Chris O’Donnell was one of Hollywood’s most prominent young heartthrobs. Whether it was acting opposite Al Pacino in Scent of a Woman or playing a young D’Artagnan in the Disney version of The Three Musketeers, it can’t be denied that the movie that put his career into overdrive was Batman Forever. In it, O’Donnell reinvented the role of Batman’s ward and sidekick, Robin, for the nineties, with him an acrobatic badass that proved so popular that the next movie was Batman and Robin. And there is where things started to change, with Joel Schumacher’s sequel ridiculed.
Even still, O’Donnell made a few good movies after, including the underrated rom-com The Bachelor and the terrific Martin Campbell action movie Vertical Limit. However, his career never regained the momentum it had in the nineties. Yet, despite everything, he later went onto a long run on NCIS: Los Angeles,...

There are few pulpy visualizations of revenge that play as satisfyingly as the climax of Martin Campbell’s The Mask of Zorro. Released 25 years ago, the still surprisingly lithe and surefooted swashbuckler culminates with a multigenerational crescendo of vengeance, which is served bloody and fierce. On one level of a crumbling Californian gold mine, the original Zorro is a now aged and dying Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins), and he grapples in his last breath with the man who stole his life and imprisoned him in hell for 20 years. Yet a literal platform below this Count of Monte Cristo passion play is something even bleaker and more vicious: the storm of swords unleashed by a younger Zorro (Antonio Banderas) and his own object of disdain: Capt. Harrison Love (Matt Letscher).

The Daniel Craig era of James Bond movies started strong with Martin Campbell's "Casino Royale" in 2006. Audiences reacted incredibly well to the gruffer, more brutal version of the character, as he fit handily into the world's post-9/11 political hopelessness. A dandyish cartoon James Bond did not fit into the zeitgeist of the '00s, and the character became Dionysian and brutish rather than Apollonian and refined.
The Craig Bond films also introduced a novel concept into the franchise: each film was a direct sequel of the one that preceded it. Ordinarily, Bond films stood on their own, not requiring much knowledge of the films that came before. Now, bad guys could be set up in one picture only to pay off in a later chapter.

In the world of buddy cop comedies, the "Rush Hour" franchise remains a standout. The odd coupling of a reserved chief inspector from Hong Kong and a fast-talking LAPD officer sparked three action-packed, hilarious films popular the world over, amassing over $850 million at the global box office.
Across the three films, Chief Inspector Lee (Jackie Chan) and Detective James Carter (Chris Tucker) solve cases in Hong Kong and the U.S., even paying a brief visit to France, typically involving the Triads and government officials. And while the trilogy offers adrenaline-inducing action sequences, it's the comedic chemistry between the two actors that has endured.
When the first installment of "Rush Hour" debuted in 1998, North American audiences had just become acquainted with Chan following the success of "Rumble in the Bronx," while films like "Friday" and "The Fifth Element" highlighted Tucker as an emerging comedic voice. Before the underrated "Quantum of Solace" made longtime Bond producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson panic, we had a near-perfect 007 film. 2006's "Casino Royale" is easily the best Bond movie, but bringing it to fruition was anything but easy.
Imagine having to reinvent James Bond, a figure who in the early 2000s had been a cultural mainstay for more than 40 years — a figure who'd been reinvented time and time again and whose cultural appeal was arguably lessening as the world moved into the new millennium. Things weren't helped by the fact that 2002's "Die Another Day" was widely regarded as a low point for the long-running franchise, even though some might argue for it, too, being an underrated Bond movie.
In other words, refreshing well-worn IP that was rapidly losing its appeal was never going to be easy, and that wasn't just true in the macro sense. Specific scenes...

"The Mask of Zorro" is now 25 years old, though you might not know by watching it. Director Martin Campbell's 1998 film is a sexy, high-octane swashbuckler that, along with filmmaker Stephen Sommers' remake of "The Mummy," was likely responsible for the bisexual awakening of an entire generation in the late '90s. Leads Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones certainly light up the screen as newbie Zorro-in-training, Alejandro, and his predecessor's daughter, Elena, whether they're cutting a rug across the dance floor or mixing swordplay with flirtation. Then there's the breathtaking practical stunts and set pieces, which Campbell stages with the utmost elegance in collaboration with his cast and crew -- not least of all his longtime director of photography Phil Méheux, who imbues the film with a visual grandiosity befitting of a Western epic.
More than anything, it's the film's practical approach that keeps it feeling timeless. Campbell, who had...

Antonio Banderas celebrated the 25th anniversary of “The Mask of Zorro” in a recent interview with Yahoo Entertainment. The Martin Campbell-directed adventure movie was produced by Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment and grossed $250 million at the worldwide box office in 1998.

Top global talent paid homage to director Martin Campbell and special effects supervisor Chris Corbould at the second London Action Festival, which concluded Sunday.
The duo, who were honored with the festival’s Moving Target Award for their outstanding contribution to action cinema, were surprised with a range of video messages from people who had worked with them.
Daniel Craig described Campbell and Corbould as “two people who have had a major influence on my career.” On Campbell, Craig said: “It gave me incredible security knowing you were steering the ship [Casino Royale]. I have so much to thank you for. I’m incredibly proud of the film we made together.” On Corbould, Craig added: “I don’t know what to say. You’ve blown me up, you’ve set me on fire – but what has been so incredible in working with you is to have had the privilege of getting inside your imagination.
