There were a number of reasons the employees at the Bryant & May match factory wanted to strike in 1888: They were fined for trivial offenses, berated for small errors and paid abysmally for hours of grueling labor. But above all, their owners were killing them. A change in production methods — switching from red phosphorus to white — increased the company’s profit and poisoned the match factory employees. The women and girls developed phosphorus necrosis, a disease that caused engorged abscesses in the mouth and fatal brain damage.

The game is afoot once again, and Sherlock Holmes' younger sister is back as a full-fledged detective in her own right. "Enola Holmes 2," the follow-up to the 2020 film based on Nancy Springer's young adult novel series, premieres next week on Netflix. Enola, played by "Stranger Things" actress Millie Bobby Brown, is a brilliant young woman whose unconventional mother, Eudoria (Helena Bonham Carter), taught her about patterns, messages, and solving mysteries. After her successful detective work in the last film, Enola has chosen to open an agency of her own. But that's not exactly going well, as women in business in the Victorian era weren't taken very seriously.
When a case of a missing sister falls into her lap, though, Enola will do all she can to solve the crime. However, this time she has more help from her very famous brother, Sherlock (Henry Cavill). I recently spoke to...

Martin McDonagh’s cult hit man feature comes to 4K looking extremely good: fans of low-key black humor and droll sentimentality, kinda-like-the-Coens, kinda-like-Tarantino, love this picture. Cute characterizations from Colin Farrell, Brendan Gleeson & Ralph Fiennes bring light to a ‘killers with a heart’ story. It keeps us watching to see what happens next, that’s for sure. And when’s the last time that 13th century European art and architecture figured so heavily in a mob saga?

(Welcome to ...And More, our no-frills, zero B.S. guide to when and where you can watch upcoming movies and shows, and everything else you could possibly stand to know.)
Among the rare good things to come out of 2020 was "Enola Holmes," a film that manages to blend the millennial energy of "Dickinson" with the introspective, fourth wall-breaking of "Fleabag". The high-spirited mystery-adventure tells the story of tenacious sleuth Enola Holmes, a character who was created by author Nancy Springer and is technically Sherlock Holmes' sister in the official Arthur Conan Doyle canon now. Yay for the public domain!
Leading the way as Enola in the film version is "Stranger Things" veteran Millie Bobby Brown, with Henry Cavill co-starring as an atypically polite and empathetic Sherlock — a matter that, oddly enough, was once at the heart of a since-resolved lawsuit filed by the Doyle estate. Both will return in the upcoming sequel,...

On Radioactive, production designer Michael Carlin created a sense of enormous scope with a relatively modest budget, recreating period environments from five countries, for a story spanning more than a century.
Based on a graphic novel by Lauren Redniss, the drama tells the story of Marie Curie (Rosamund Pike), the pioneering scientist who changed the world with her discovery of radioactivity. Intercut with episodes from Curie’s life were scenes that spoke to the consequences of her work, staged at Hiroshima, Chernobyl and other destinations.
To carry the viewer through time and space, Carlin would transform sections of Budapest and Spain, to achieve a diverse assortment of looks.
But for the production designer, Radioactive is one of two dramas in the awards conversation this year, the other being The Mauritanian. Directed by Kevin Macdonald, the STX title tells the true story of Mohamedou Ould Salahi (Tahar Rahim), a man held...

STXfilms has decided to enter this unconventional awards season with a mighty and timely drama, “The Mauritanian,” formerly called “Prisoner 760,” from Scottish director Kevin Macdonald. The film will be released on Feb. 19, 2021, and could echo the same late-breaking awards success that past movies like “Million Dollar Baby” were able to execute. With an impressive cast that includes Tahar Rahim, Jodie Foster, Benedict Cumberbatch and Shailene Woodley, the inspiring true story could resonate with AMPAS voters, especially its large international membership.
“The Mauritanian” tells the true story of Mohamedou Ould Slahi (Rahim), who was held captive and tortured by the U.S. government in Guantanamo Bay detention camp for 10 years without a charge or trial. Losing faith, he finds hope in defense attorney Nancy Hollander (Foster) and her associate Teri Duncan (Woodley), who face countless legal obstacles in their pursuit of justice.

For “Fleabag” director Harry Bradbeer, green was indicative of gender when it came to building the world of the title character for “Enola Holmes,” based on the YA book series by Nancy Springer about the teenage sister of Sherlock Holmes.
The film, which bows on Netflix on Sept. 23, sees young Enola, played by “Stranger Things” actor Millie Bobby Brown, trek from the British countryside to the unwelcoming streets of London in search of her mother (Helena Bonham Carter), who has gone missing. Along the way, she meets Lord Tewksbury (Louis Partridge), another young, free-spirited soul.
Bradbeer teamed up with Oscar-nominated production designer Michael Carlin (“The Duchess”) to create the sets and locations that make up the 16-year-old’s world in 1884 England. They spoke with Variety about their work.
The Color Palette
Michael Carlin: We were adamant that we didn’t want a period version of Victorian London which largely comes from black-and-white photographs.

The London Film Festival continued on October 11 with Keira Knightley‘s new period drama “Colette” playing to three cinema screens packed full of press. This biopic of the acclaimed writer is set in turn of the century Paris and is directed by Wash Westmoreland (“Still Alice”). It co-stars the terrific Dominic West as Colette’s husband, Willy. Here’s the official synopsis: Colette is pushed by her husband to write novels under his name. Upon their success, she fights to make her talents known, challenging gender norms.
Predict the Oscar nominations now; change them until January 22
The film was very well-received here, with many an appreciative laugh heard during the more relevant jokes and topics raised during the film. This period piece is quite relatable to a lot of people today, with the struggle of gender norms a hot button issue. The filmmakers play on that during several scenes. Colette...

Costume designer Andrea Flesch assembled more than 50 outfits to define the title character in “Colette,” a film in which period costumes strongly support the story of avant-garde French novelist Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette, who lived from 1873 to 1954 and became identified with such issues as creative copyright ownership and women’s emancipation.
The film, directed by Wash Westmoreland (“Still Alice”), stars Keira Knightley as “Colette,” a girl from rural France who marries Willy, a sophisticated Parisian writer played by Dominic West. Bleecker Street will release the picture Sept. 21.
Flesch aimed to define Colette as she embarks on her journey from country to city and from suppressed ghostwriter to literary fame, perhaps most notably for the 1944 novella “Gigi,” on which the 1958 best picture Oscar winner is based. “From the beginning, Wash and I discussed our vision of the film,” she says. “What’s special in her character is that she always finds her way to be unique and modern.

New Delhi, Apr : Due to logistical issues, Mira Nair faced an uphill task to recreate Lahore in Delhi, when she planned to shoot parts of her upcoming film 'The Reluctant Fundamentalist' in Pakistan.
"Creating Lahore in Delhi was not very difficult. We found this gem of a place called the Anglo-Arabic Islamic School right in the heart of Old Delhi which dates back to the 16th century," she said.
According to moes-art.com, the director had populated the place with every little details of Lahore to give a proper mood and setting for the film.
"Spiritually it's the same as Lahore. It's not like shooting Palestine in Morocco," she said.
Production Designer of the film, Michael Carlin said, "the school occupies.

A young Roman soldier begins a dangerous quest to clear his family name in this accomplished action-adventure movie
First published in 1954, The Eagle of the Ninth, Rosemary Sutcliff's novel for older children, is now regarded as a classic. Her title refers to the standard carried by the Ninth Legion of the Roman army that disappeared in the north of Britain in the second century Ad, and it's the story of how the young Marcus Aquila later sets out to discover what happened to its leader, his father Flavius Aquila, and the 500 men he led. When the book appeared I had long passed the 12-16 age group at which it was aimed, though I was acquainted with an equally exciting, if less respectable yarn published exactly a decade earlier, also by the Oxford University Press: Captain We Johns's Biggles – Charter Pilot.

In September of last year, we told you that Christopher Nolan (Inception) and Emma Thomas were meeting with a short list of directors to helm the resurrection of the Man of Steel for Warner Bros. and Legendary Pictures’ forthcoming Superman reboot. The list of directors included Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code), Zack Snyder (Watchmen, Sucker Punch), Matt Reeves (Let Me In), Tony Scott (Unstoppable) and Jonathan Liebesman (Battle: Los Angeles).
In a recent interview with Coming Soon, Duncan Jones (Moon, Source Code) confirmed that he was indeed on the short list to direct the Superman reboot, and explained that he actually removed himself from contention.

With MGM firmly back on track and the next instalment of their most revered and financially viable property picking up pace, it’s inevitable that the rumour mill kicks into action over the Bond 23. We’ve already heard whispers of Rachel Weisz coming on board and now rumoured titles for the film are beginning to crop up.
The Sun is claiming the film is “tipped” to be called Red Sky at Night. Does Bond opt for a career change, and become a sailor mid-film? Bleeding Cool have done a little digging and unearthed this from a message board:

As I previously mentioned, Channing Tatum left for Hungary on August 9th to prepare for his upcoming film, 'The Eagle of the Ninth', after wrapping up the 'G.I. Joe: Rise of Cobra' press tour. I even had a surprised Hungarian fan send me an email to let me know she may have spotted Chan running (his favorite exercise routine) on a bridge in Budapest. I don't know if it was actually him on that bridge or not, but I can confirm that filming began yesterday for the Roman epic that has been called a "'Braveheart' for a new generation".
There's a lot of fire power behind this movie...The film is directed by Academy Award winner Kevin Macdonald and produced by Academy Award and Golden Globe Award nominee Duncan Kenworthy ('Four Weddings and a Funeral). Yesterday came the yearly announcement from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as it extended 134 invitations to several artists and executives "who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures" read the press release. Of course all of them can decline, but I wouldn't necessarily expect that to happen as all who accept the invitation will be the only additions in 2009 to the Academy's roster of voting members. "These filmmakers have, over the course of their careers, captured the imagination of audiences around the world," said Academy President Sid Ganis. "It's this kind of talent and creativity that make up the Academy, and I welcome each of them to our ranks." The list follows below and reading around the best analysis I saw of it came from Nathaniel Rogers at The Film Experience who, among other things, pointed out the addition of longtime Darren Aronofsky's...

On Tuesday, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences issued invitations to 134 members of the film community to join the group. There were a maximum of 166 open slots to fill this year, but the various branch committees endorsed fewer candidates than were proposed to them.
Hugh Jackman, who hosted the most recent Oscar show, has been invited to join. So have Anne Hathaway, Emily Blunt, James Franco and Michelle Williams. The list even includes a number of comic performers like Michael Cera, Seth Rogan and Paul Rudd.
Voting membership in the organization has held steady at just under 6,000 members since 2003.
New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception at the Academy's Fairbanks Center for Motion Picture Study in Beverly Hills in September.

It’s time once again for horror at the Oscars. Sunday’s festivities were filled with folks who have worked in the genre and per usual, I feel if it’s a win for Danny Boyle, it is a win for rage-zombie fans everywhere. Seems like a lot of folks this year are veterans of Exorcist: The Beginning, Amityville: A New Generation and Gremlins 2: The New Batch. Of course, the most important genre win would be Greg Cannom, a staple of 80’s horror effects; he worked on such films as Fright Night Part 2, The Lost Boys and The Howling.
Now some movies on this list might be “kinda horror.” These thrillers or genre-friendly frameworks are on the ghoulish cusp and are marked with an asterisk. Some flicks on the list are there because, what the fuck,...

Okay, so another year and now it's the final show of the awards season. I don't know why but I'm not that enthuastic about the Oscars this year. Maybe it was last year's underwhelming show or maybe it's because The Dark Knight isn't nominated this year, probably both, but never-the-less the show is done and I want to put up the post of how the show went. Time for the ultimate post-oscar show breakdown...

Best Motion Picture Of The Year
"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (Paramount and Warner Bros.)
"Frost/Nixon" (Universal)
"Milk" (Focus Features)
"The Reader" (The Weinstein Company)
Winner: "Slumdog Millionaire" (Fox Searchlight)
Best Picture was a major disappointment. Less said about The Dark Knight - the better. For me, Milk is the most deserving of best picture this year. It's issues are more relevant and more original than all films on the list this year.

Click here for the 2009 Academy Award winners! This year I opted not to break down every category and discuss the merits of each individual nominee. Mostly because it takes a ridiculous amount of time, but also because there doesn’t seem to be as much excitement as in previous years. Maybe it’s the fact that the populist picks of the year (Dark Knight, for example) were snubbed in the major categories and replaced with little seen films like The Reader. Or maybe because many of the categories are foregone conclusions.
Either way, I wanted to post my favorites/predictions and hopefully get some discussion going on what you think will win and why. I’m posting my picks here, but included the full list of nominations below.
Best Picture
Slumdog Millionaire - It’s clearly the favorite going into the ballot counting having swept every major awards ceremony leading up to the Oscars.

On Thursday morning, January 22, Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have unveiled to the world their selection of nominees for the 81st Annual Academy Awards. Announced by Academy president Sid Ganis and Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker at the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills, the nominations were dominated by "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button".
Having been shunned away from any kudos at the 66th Golden Globe Awards, the David Fincher's drama has picked up 13 nods, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress for Taraji P. Henson and Best Leading Actor for Brad Pitt. The movie about a man born in his eighties has landed a Best Original Score nomination for composer Alexandre Desplat, and received seven gongs for technical categories as well.

Brad Pitt's The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button is the film to beat at the 2009 Academy Awards after scooping an astounding 13 Oscar nominations.
The Hollywood superstar is nominated in the Best Actor category for his portrayal of a man who ages backwards.
The film also received nods for Best Picture, Best Director for David Fincher, and Best Actress in a Supporting Role for Taraji P. Henson.
It is an impressive haul of nominations for the movie - only 1997 blockbuster Titanic and Bette Davis' 1950 classic All About Eve have achieved more, with 14 nods each.
Other actors competing with Pitt for the Best Actor prize include Frank Langella (Frost/Nixon), Sean Penn (Milk), Mickey Rourke (The Wrestler) and Richard Jenkins (The Visitor).
Kate Winslet picked up her sixth Oscar nomination, recognised in the Best Actress category for The Reader, and will battle against Pitt's partner Angelina Jolie (Changeling), Anne Hathaway (Rachel Getting Married), Meryl Streep (Doubt), and Melissa Leo (Frozen River) for the award.
Late star Heath Ledger won a nomination for his role as The Joker in The Dark Knight exactly a year after his tragic death.
He will compete in the Best Supporting Actor category against Josh Brolin (Milk), Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder), Philip Seymour Hoffman (Doubt), and Michael Shannon (Revolutionary Road).
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Slumdog Millionaire, The Reader, Frost/Nixon and Milk will all vie for the coveted Best Motion Picture gong at the forthcoming ceremony on 22 February.
And each of the film's directors - David Fincher, Danny Boyle, Stephen Daldry, Ron Howard and Gus Van Sant respectively - are up for the Achievement in Directing prize.
The award nominations were announced at a press conference in Los Angeles on Thursday morning by Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker, who took home the Best Actor Oscar in 2007 for his role in The Last King Of Scotland.
The full list of nominations is as follows:...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has selected the nominations for the 81st Annual Academy Awards ceremony, airing live on ABC February 22, 2009. The awards will be handed out at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood, California.
Hugh Jackman has been hired to host the Oscars, the first time for the Australian actor, but more importantly the first time since 1989 a comedian hasn’t hosted. The producers (Laurence Mark and Bill Condon) have also made formal statements saying they do not plan to announce the presenters for the awards, hoping the surprise will drive viewership.

The Duchess
Starring Keira Knightley, Ralph Fiennes, and Hayley Atwell
Directed by Saul Dibb
Rated PG-13
When Keira Knightley burst onto the scene five years ago, not many people thought we were looking at The Next Big Thing, but in that short time, the 23-year-old Knightley has become an incredibly bankable female movie star (Forbes ranks her as the second-highest earning actress) and she has done so while taking on some challenging roles.
Unlike a lot of actors in her age group, Knightley has not strictly been a blockbuster girl, nor has she frittered away her talent making forgettable romantic comedies. Indeed, outside of the Pirates of Caribbean trilogy, nearly every role she has taken brings a certain amount of risk, and they're the films most young movie stars would avoid, because they aren't potential franchises.
