One of the biggest complaints that critics of the "Star Wars" prequels have is the idea that George Lucas was simply enabled by so-called "Yes Men." As they would tell it, George Lucas was so powerful and infallible that no one around him thought they could tell him "no" for anything. More than that, these yes men would just do whatever Lucas asked without thought to whether or not it was a good idea. For a long time, it seemed like this was the established wisdom; forget the fact that many people actually love the prequels as they are and aren't concerned about what did or didn't happen behind the scenes during their development.
Was this really an issue? Did it even happen? Well, we here at /Film have taken it upon ourselves to get to the bottom of this pervasive attitude.

The most rudimentary research into the creative origins of the groundbreaking 1977 sci-fi flick "Star Wars" will reveal to the reader that creator George Lucas was inspired by "Flash Gordon" serials from the 1930s, as well as Akira Kurosawa's 1958 epic "The Hidden Fortress." Kurosawa's film famously opened with two clownish characters (Kamatari Fujiwara and Minoru Chiaki) who aimed to earn their fortune as samurai. After several misadventures, the peasants unwittingly become embroiled in a much larger plot about a missing princess (Misa Uehara), a war, and a brave protective warrior (Toshiro Mifune). "Star Wars" borrowed that film's structure, introducing audiences to its sci-fi action through the eyes (lenses?) of the robotic characters C-3Po (Anthony Daniels) and the non-humanoid R2-D2.
C-3Po was a prissy, fastidious droid who seemed impatient with the foibles of the organic beings he lived with, and was frequently panicked and afraid. The only time...

Looking over George Lucas' filmography, one can find no films set in the present day. Indeed, only one of Lucas' feature films is set in the future, and his "Thx 1138" is a dystopian hellscape of corporate control and utter emotionlessness. His other five directorial efforts are all set in the past, where youth was enjoyable and heroes existed in distant galaxies (even if "American Graffiti" was set just a decade before its release date). The past was bright. It's the future we have to be suspicious of.
Lucas once said that he was influenced by Arthur Lipsett's 1964 short film "21-87," a heady, abstract film about how humanity has reached an inflection point, and that society is now officially primed for collapse. This film, however obscure, offers a handy primer on Lucas' entire body of work. If there is a hero's journey to be had, it belongs in the ancient world.

There was a time, long before the "Star Wars" galaxy expanded to sequels, spin-offs, and TV series, where only one version of the infamous Master Yoda existed. In the original trilogy, Yoda was a puppet operated by Frank Oz — and even when "Star Wars" creator George Lucas came back with "The Phantom Menace," Oz reprised his performance as Yoda once more. Until then, Yoda was largely sedentary, and save for a few piggybacks on the shoulders of Luke Skywalker, entirely earthbound.
All that was set to change with the prequels, namely "Attack of the Clones." The new trilogy established the Jedi Order as a force to be reckoned with: during the Clone Wars, they're at the height of their hubris, but also the height of their military power. That meant that Yoda, the Grandmaster of the Jedi Council, would have to pull his weight in battle — as well as in...

The Skywalker saga may be done and dusted, but it seems that the films still have secrets to spill. In fact, one little-noticed detail was revealed today in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith that put a smile on fans’ faces.
It comes during the scene in which General Grievous faces off against Obi-Wan. At the start of the fight comes the memorable moment where Grievous unsheathes his four lightsabers. And as he does so, two battle droids out of focus at the rear of the shot have a great little reaction.
One of them gives the other a nudge, telling him to check out the crazy fight that’s about to go down in front of them. The ‘roger roger’ Battle Droids in the prequels were responsible for some pretty amusing slapstick gags along the way, so this is a nice moment that humanizes them a little bit. But of course,...

Star Wars has got a lot of iconic moments and visuals, but maybe nothing screams Star Wars more than the opening title crawl. From the second you see “a long time ago, in a galaxy far far away” and the music cues up, you know that this is a Star Wars film. These words come from an anonymous narrator, who I didn’t know about until today, but apparently he exists. The identity of this narrator has been a mystery since 1977, but know we finally have a face to match the words with, thanks to none other than the former master of all things Star Wars, George Lucas. As reported by io9, on the set of Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, George Lucas had a conversation with his animation director Rob Coleman about the identity of the narrator. This information was then passed ...

Envisioned as a loveable sidekick, Jar Jar Binks inspired anger among critics and fans in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. What went wrong?
If you're too young to remember the surreal level of pre-release hype surrounding Star Wars: The Phantom Menace in early 1999, take a look at this Vanity Fair article, published in January that year. Writer David Kamp was out in the Tunisian desert to report on what was surely going to be the biggest film of the decade: George Lucas's triumphant return to the Star Wars universe.
The Phantom Menace has, Kamp writes, "a Garbo mystique"; it's the most "craved film ever" - a cinema event capable of bringing the country to a standstill on release day.
But in among the breathless anticipation all over that article, tiny warning signs can be found.

George Lucas’ Star Wars Prequels did a lot of things for the special effects industry, being among the first films to feature thousands of digitally enhanced shots, while also introducing the idea of the first CG supporting cast members. But for all the good they did for the industry in moving VFX forward, many fans have decried the Prequels’ use of computer images throughout the trilogy. Today, with our look at CGI in movies, I’m taking a look at why the Prequels; use of CG hasn’t sat well with people and caused so much uproar.

Hot on the heels of creating the animation for The Lego Movie 3D, which has amassed $US330 million worldwide, Animal Logic has been restructured into three divisions.
The group will now comprise Animal Logic Animation; Animal Logic VFX; and Animal Logic Entertainment, a Los Angeles-based feature film development arm that is nurturing a slate of animation, hybrid animation and live-action and director and VFX-driven films.
Eighteen months after the company bought Fuel VFX, its personnel have been integrated with Animal Logic.s VFX teams and the Fuel VFX brand has been dropped.
.The newly consolidated division will trade as Animal Logic VFX, incorporating the wealth of talent and technology under one roof, further strengthening its ongoing commitment to the Australian and international VFX industry,. Animal Logic CEO Zareh Nalbandian tells If.
.On the back of the success of The Lego Movie it is a logical step to have a clearer structure across the company.

[1] George Lucas' changes [2] to the Star Wars Blu-ray set have drawn some ire as of late, but let's be real -- these things are still gonna sell like hotcakes. While Lucas' alterations really will turn off some of his fans, it's probably a safe bet that many more will shell out for them anyway, even if they're grumbling as they do so. With that in mind, here are six ads for the Blu-ray that try to put you in a more positive state of mind about the updated releases. There's a lot of mixed emotions right now for the upcoming Blu-ray release of George Lucas' the Star Wars saga. I've been waiting for these movie to come out on Blu-ray for a long time so I'm going to end up getting the original trilogy, regardless of the changes, even though I'm not happy with some of them. One of the main reasons I'm getting them though is for the special features, because these things are going to be packed full of awesome Star Wars goodies, including many deleted scenes, one of which is available now for you to watch below.
The deleted scene that was released is a little conversation between Han and Leia on the planet Hoth. It may look familiar, but the dialogue is completely different. Check out the deleted scene below and tell us what you think!

20th Century-Fox Home Entertainment took advantage of yesterday’s International Star Wars Day to formally announce the details surrounding this September’s Blu-ray debut of the original Star Wars trilogy along with the more recent trilogy. The six films are accompanied by three discs of extras totaling a stellar 40 hours of material – some new, some old.
Here’s the formal release with the details. Begin saving for this event, although let me caution you that the original versions of the trilogy won’t be here. George Lucas has previously indicated the film is in no shape for high definition conversion.

Okay Star Wars nuts, here's everything you need to see, hear and know about those Blu-rays coming out later this year.
Today is May 4 which as you know is "Star Wars Day" (as in May the fourth be with you) and everyone was expecting a big announcement. Not surprising, that announcement was all about the upcoming Blu-rays, so we've got a new trailer in which nothing happens, all the cover artwork for the three different sets and full special feature specs for you... and before you ask, no the "originals" are not included and, I'm sure, never will be.
You can pre-order the Star Wars: The Complete Saga (Episodes I-vi) Blu-ray.
Check it all out after the break.
Head to Quiet Earth to see the stills.

[1]Update: Cover art for the three sets have been added. Lucasfilm's impressive streak of disappointment continues today as they've officially announced [2] the special features for the September 12 Blu-ray release of Star Wars: The Complete Saga. The nine-disc set, which features all six movies in the series, actually has a number of reportedly brand new features including individual archive discs dedicated to each trilogy and several new feature length documentaries. Sounds great, right? Well, the set also contains a lot of material from previous releases and is missing several great features from those same releases. Finally - not that we were expecting anything else, but dare to dream - the upcoming box contains strictly the special editions of the original trilogy. Read the full press release and list of special features after the jump. Here's the full press release [3] about the set announced today, May 4, as in "May the 4th be with you.

The Star Wars Saga makes its collective HD debut this September, in a nine-disc collection that would make a Sith Lord blush...
The fourth of May be with you! Or something. For those of us already bored with our Star Wars VHS and DVD boxed sets now gathering dust on a shelf somewhere, today saw Lucasfilm make a rather special announcement - Star Wars: The Complete Saga on Blu-ray.
That this sextet of sci-fi is coming out in high-definition isn’t a particularly well-kept secret, but the host of extras present on the nine disc set perhaps is. Each feature will come on its own separate disc with twin audio commentaries, while a further three discs will come with a profusion of deleted and extended scenes, matte paintings and concept art, plus cast and crew interviews.
The ninth disc, meanwhile, will contain no fewer than eight Star Wars-flavoured documentaries.

That's right folks, today is the official unofficial Star Wars holiday celebrated by fans the world over. So if you hear people gladly shouting "May the 4th be with you," you'll understand why. For several years now this has been celebrated and even Lucasfilm has gotten in on the fun over the years. So imagine the delight when they've made a special announcement pertaining to the impending blu-ray releases on this day.
For the past few days the official Star Wars website has been running this picture (above) to tease fans that some announcement would be made on the 4th, about the blu-rays. It seemed kind of odd, considering there wasn't much to announce, so everyone pretty much assumed it would be related to the special features (which no one had any concrete details on).

Whoops. For the last few days, Lucasfilm had a teaser site which indicated an announcement of the details of their upcoming Blu-ray sets for the "Star Wars" films would be hitting today at 6am Us-pst. The details were released, but the site obviously underestimated the interest factor for the sets as within a few minutes it crashed, the teaser site redirecting to foxmovies.com.
Still, before the announcement went tits-up, the key information was collected so lets get right to the important stuff. First, these are unsurprisingly only the special edition versions of the original saga so you'll get to see Greedo shoot first in high-def. The 2004 DVD box-set made further changes from the first 'Special Editions' in 1997 - best bet is the 2004 version is what will be used (though we won't know until the first reviews come in). All the films are in 1080p and with 6.1 DTS Surround Sound.

Watching The Clone Wars carries an element of Greek tragedy to it: The average Star Wars fan cannot help but feel a slight twist in the gut while viewing the adventures of characters for whom the future is already written. And not too pleasantly, either.
