J.K. Rowling’s popular adventures of ‘The Boy Who Lived‘ will be given new life! Pottermore Publishing and Audible have teamed up to produce a series of full-cast recordings of all seven Harry Potter books!
We learned of the unexpected announcement via Variety. The production will include a cast exceeding 100 actors, similar to an audio drama but on a vastly larger scale.
Production has not started yet, but a teaser video from the official Harry Potter YouTube channel shows off the audible recording studio. Rather than recording lines separately (like we see with a lot of voiceover work), it would appear that several cast members will be in the room at one time.
This sort of environment can change the performances is several ways. The dynamic allows actors to play off each other’s performances in real-time. These new audiobooks could possibly be the most perfect adaptation of the Harry...

In 2014, my son’s mother and I took our 3-year-old Noah to Bali. I had judged a film contest with Ihg Hotels and they compensated me with points to use at any of their resorts.
After a while at their lovely InterContinental Bali on Jimbaran Bay at the southern tip of Bali, we yearned for a more offbeat jungle experience and discovered through Airbnb the astounding Green Village Bali, a sustainably built housing community near Ubud.
Before we even checked in, they assumed we were there to see Green School Bali, which we had never heard of. A quick, deep jungle walk later we entered into a clearing where massive twisted bamboo buildings poked through the trees like giant foraging dinosaurs. A small group was gathered with designer John Hardy, the school’s creator, who was about to start a rare personal tour of his school.

Created by Bryan Fuller, "Pushing Daisies"followed Ned the Pie-Maker (Lee Pace), who had the seemingly magical power to resurrect the dead with a touch. His ability came with rules. One, Ned couldn't touch anyone he brought back to life or they would die again, permanently. Second, if Ned doesn't "re-dead" someone within 60 seconds, then someone else's life will be taken in an equivalent exchange.
Ned uses his ability to assist sardonic private investigator Emerson Cod (Chi McBride) in solving murder cases. Thanks to Ned, Emerson is able to interview the victims. The pilot's ("Pie-Lette") case of the week features Ned's childhood crush Charlotte "Chuck" Charles (Anna Friel) as the murdered party. Ned can't bear to "re-dead" her, but now the two have to make their relationship work even though they can't touch each other.
During its brief life from 2007 to 2009, "Pushing Daisies" was one of the most unique television shows on the air.

In an interview last year, Yard Act frontman James Smith spoke about how his band had “Trojan Horsed” the music industry. The Leeds-formed group snuck into the charts in 2020 amid a cavalry of post-punk acts. Early singles – the juddery “Dark Days” and the foot-stomping “Fixer Upper”, with its funky “Fame” guitar squalls – saw the four-piece lumped in with London bands such as Dry Cleaning and Black Midi. Eager comparisons were also drawn to the Sprechgesang (spoken-word singing) scene populated by Idles, Sleaford Mods, and Black Country, New Road. But Yard Act’s wry yet good-humoured take on post-punk always had that extra dose of salt, Smith’s tongue firmly in cheek.

Mal Z. Lawrence, whose defiantly old-school Borscht Belt stand-up comedy delighted audiences and happily surprised critics when the Catskills on Broadway revue became a hit in 1991, died Monday at a hospice facility in Delray Beach, Florida. He was 88.
His death was announced to The New York Times by his talent agent Alison Chaplin.
The comedian Marilyn Michaels, who co-starred in Catskills on Broadway, wrote in a Facebook tribute, “The passing of Mal Z Lawrence is cause for great sadness, as he was a terrific talent and a very funny guy.. A true Bon Vivant. Attention must be paid! …Rip Mal Z.. you are making the angels laugh.”
Born Manny Miller in the Bronx, Lawrence became interested in comedy during an early-1950s Army stint. Performing for other soldiers as half of a duo patterned on Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin, Lawrence soon played the Jewish resorts of New York’s...

Reading isn't an every-now-and-then hobby or a rainy-day activity to me. It's as normal as breathing. It's like eating cake - sweet and exciting if you devour it all at once, decadent and tantalizing if you take it slowly, one bite at a time. When I open a book, it's like the rest of the world completely shuts off, and I am transported into whatever I'm reading. And while holding a brand-new book, flipping through its pages, and taking a deep breath of its intoxicating smell is one of my favorite pastimes, I have to admit to an unpopular opinion: listening to audiobooks is just as an amazing experience as reading the physical book.
And I'm not the only one who thinks so. In 2019, the Pew Research Center published a study showing that 20 percent of Americans reported listening to audiobooks in the last year - up from 14 percent in 2016. And it's easy to see why.

During uncertain times, we often have the desire to go back to the stories that mean the most to us. For many, this is the Harry Potter series and, if that’s the case for you, you’re in luck! Wizarding World, the official hub for all things Harry Potter, is launching a “Harry Potter at Home” series that will see many special guests reading chapters of the first book in the series, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone (Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone in the UK), aloud. The chapters will be available in both video form (via harrypotterathome.com) and audio form (via Spotify).
While Wizarding World hasn’t announced all of the famous people, or “best-loved faces from global entertainment, music and sport” who will be contributing to the project as readers, we do know some of the special guests. They include: Daniel Radcliffe, Stephen Fry, David Beckham,...

Glenn Close received the Museum of the Moving Image’s annual Salute at a gala on Monday evening in New York City, where leading actors and directors shared their experiences working alongside her — and the Tony-winner herself revealed the advice that’s kept her going throughout her impressive career.
Close now has 84 screen credits and nearly as many awards to her name, but Jim Dale remembers where it all began. The two theater legends co-starred in the original Broadway run of “Barnum” in 1980, which nabbed Close her first Tony nomination — and, as it turns out, her first film role.
“Glenny was sitting in a fake box on the stage as Mrs. Barnum, knitting away and waving to the audience as they came in, as if she knew them,” Dale told Variety on the red carpet. “And a producer and a set designer and a costume designer and a director came in,...

Disney is on a roll this year - following the billion dollar box office success of Jon Favreau's The Jungle Book, their second dip into their back catalogue this year is another belter. Loosely based on the 1977 film of the same name, Pete's Dragon is more independent from its inspiration than any remake for many a year.
There are those who look back fondly on the original, a live action/cel animation hybrid in which Mickey Rooney and Jim Dale gurned at a delightful cartoon dragon, but it's hard to say that it stands up to the likes of similarly designed films like Mary Poppins and Bedknobs & Broomsticks. Nearly four decades on, the most unlikely of directors, David Lowery (Ain't Them Bodies Saints) has taken a trifle and stirred up a moving and majestic remake, transplanting the action from the 1900s...

In case you're thinking the new Pete's Dragon is another one of those Disney schmaltz-fests that only the most naïve kid could tolerate, snap out of it. Unlike the stupefyingly dreary 1977 musical version of the same name with Jim Dale and Helen Reddy, this one has a real filmmaker at the helm. His name is David Lowery, whose indie drama Ain't Them Bodies Saints (2013) had a bruising poetry that made a lasting impression. You won't be bruised much by a tale of orphan boy and the dragon that befriends him.

ABC cancelled the Pushing Daisies TV series after two seasons totaling 22 episodes. Even Ned's (Lee Pace) magic touch couldn't bring it back to life (or perhaps -- he touched it twice). Co-star Anna Friel, who played Ned's untouchable love interest, Charlotte 'Chuck' Charles, would jump at the chance to revive this cancelled-too-soon show, at least as a movie. For the love of apple pie, someone get Netflix on the phone!

It may seem strange for one studio to commit to the release of two re-imaginings of past glories about orphan boys living in wooded areas – especially in the same year – but this very particular trend looks set to pay off for Walt Disney Studios in spectacular fashion, as The Jungle Book charges into theatres in April, while Pete’s Dragon is scheduled to dominate late summer. Up until now, little has been seen of this project, but with the first trailer now available, we can see that something magical this way comes.
There has always been something fascinating about the idea of dragons – these mythical creatures that have inspired so many centuries of storytelling. It seems the idea of lost children, fending for themselves and discovering spectacular secrets is also fascinating, as that plot device has given us generations of tales to pass on, too.

Deep Impact Vs Armageddon is not the only time similar movies have landed around the same time...
Usually, a competing project is poison for a studio. Especially in the era now where a blockbuster costs the national budget of a small country to get out into the world, you don't want to be up against a film with similar subject matter.
Yet this keeps happening, time and time again. Even now, there are two live action Jungle Book movies in various stages of production, for example. And let us not forget when K-9 and Turner And Hooch once did battle...
But how have the movie showdowns of old turned out? And are there any instances where everyone's a winner?
Er, not many as it happens...

Ron Moody as Fagin in 'Oliver!' based on Charles Dickens' 'Oliver Twist.' Ron Moody as Fagin in Dickens musical 'Oliver!': Box office and critical hit (See previous post: "Ron Moody: 'Oliver!' Actor, Academy Award Nominee Dead at 91.") Although British made, Oliver! turned out to be an elephantine release along the lines of – exclamation point or no – Gypsy, Star!, Hello Dolly!, and other Hollywood mega-musicals from the mid'-50s to the early '70s.[1] But however bloated and conventional the final result, and a cast whose best-known name was that of director Carol Reed's nephew, Oliver Reed, Oliver! found countless fans.[2] The mostly British production became a huge financial and critical success in the U.S. at a time when star-studded mega-musicals had become perilous – at times downright disastrous – ventures.[3] Upon the American release of Oliver! in Dec. 1968, frequently acerbic The...

A self-acknowledged "showcase for Academy Award frontrunners," the Santa Barbara International Film Festival is often overlooked for the actual films that earn it festival status. An amalgamation of international discoveries and ’merica’s circuit highlights, the Sbiff curates a week of best-of-the-best to pair with their star-praising. The 2015 edition offers another expansive selection, bookended by two films that aren’t on any radars just yet. Sbiff will open with "Desert Dancer," producer Richard Raymond’s directorial debut. Starring Reece Ritchie and Frieda Pinto, the drama follows a group of friends who wave off the harsh political climate of Iran’s 2009 presidential election in favor of forming a dance team, picking up moves from Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev thanks to the magic of YouTube. The festival will close with "McFarland, USA," starring Kevin Costner and Maria Bello. Telling the 1987 true story of a Latino high school’s underdog cross-country team,...

A major studio has not produced an original live-action movie musical since 1992's Newsies, starring little kid Christian Bale. I am talking wholly original, here. Moulin Rouge! in 2001 counts in that it was original story, but it only featured one and a half original songs. Therefore, it does not fit the criteria. Well, Fox is taking a chance on The Greatest Showman on Earth centered on P.T. Barnum, legendary co-creator of Ringling Brothers and Barnum and Bailey Circus. Hugh Jackman, who is now getting pretty good reviews on Broadway in Jez Butterworth's The River (though, the play itself is being met with a bit harsher criticism), is set to play Barnum in the film, which plans to start production in New York next summer. Bill Condon penned the latest draft of the screenplay. Michael Gracey, a former animator who has lined up a few projects to direct but has not started them yet,...

Ned is a humble pie maker. He spends his days doing normal pie-maker things like chopping fruit, making crusts, and waking murder victims to ask who killed them so that he can collect the rewards with his Pi partner Emerson Cod. The quiet life.
He is the proud (or often not-so-proud) owner of a magic finger, one that can bring a dead thing back to life with one touch and return it to corpse-hood with a second touch. If he happens to keep the dead thing alive for more than one minute, however, something else must die in its place. These are the rules. Small in number, but large in complexity. Don’t you love a show with a rulebook?

Update: The Wrap reports that Lowery is now in talks to direct. Clearly Disney's executives liked what they read...Another of Disney’s back-catalogue has now been targeted for an update by the Mouse House. This time, it’s Pete’s Dragon in the crosshairs, with writer/director David Lowery hired to co-write a new take on the cuddly, musical blend of live-action and animation. The original Pete’s Dragon hit cinemas in 1977, and starred Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, Helen Reddy and Jim Dale, in the story of an orphaned lad (Sean Marshall) who arrives in a small town with his magic dragon, attempting to escape his abusive adoptive parents.Lowery and co-writer Toby Halbrooks are on board to write a new take on the story, with a modern frame and, according to Deadline at least, no music. It’s a definite change of pace for the pair...

We know them best as the twelve very different incarnations of the Doctor. But all the actors who've been the star of Doctor Who, being such good all-rounders in the first place, have also had film careers. Admittedly, some CVs are more impressive than others, but this retrospective attempts to pick out some of the many worthwhile films which have starred, featured or seen a fleeting cameo by the actors who would become (or had been) the Doctor.
William Hartnell was, above all else, a film star. He is by far the most prolific film actor of the main twelve to play the Time Lord. With over 70 films to his name, summarising Hartnell's film career is difficult at best.

Pushing Daisies, “Pie-lette”
Written by Bryan Fuller
Directed by Barry Sonnenfeld
Aired October 2nd, 2007
The facts are these: a series about death, loneliness, romance, PIs, and pie shouldn’t work. Especially on network television. And yet for two seasons, it did. Bryan Fuller’s Pushing Daisies premiered in the fall of 2007 as the highest rated new series, with 13 million viewers tuning in for the pilot, “Pie-lette”. It would eventually drop in the ratings, squeaking out a renewal due to uncertainty over the writers strike before being cancelled the next season, but those who tuned in for that first episode were treated to a delightful, whimsical flight of fancy the likes of which are rarely seen on American television.
Bryan Fuller has a history with darkly comedic, metaphysically tricky shows. His previous series, Dead Like Me and Wonderfalls, both feature their female protagonists dying (or nearly doing so) in the pilot.

Disney has decided to remake their classic 1977 live-action/animated film Pete's Dragon. I can't really say that I'm a big fan of the original because I've probably only really seen once, maybe twice. What makes this production interesting is the person they hired to write it, David Lowery. Lowery is the writer and director of one of this years Sundance hits Ain't Them Bodies Saints which starred Rooney Mara, Casey Affleck, and Ben Foster. This was a dark and gritty drama about an outlaw who escapes from prison to reunite with his wife and the daughter who he's never met. So Lowery didn't seem like the kind of filmmaker I would ever seen take on something like Pete's Dragon. But that's what he's doing, and he'll be tackling it with his writing partner Toby Halbrooks.

Exclusive: I didn’t see this one coming. After directing one of the most talked-about films at Sundance Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, David Lowery has hired on with writing partner Toby Halbrooks to script Pete’s Dragon for Disney and producer Jim Whitaker. I’m told they will reinvent the core story of a venerable Disney family film. It will not be a musical and at this point Lowery is just engaged as writer. The original 1977 Pete’s Dragon mixed an animated fire-breather with a live-action cast of actors that included Mickey Rooney, Red Buttons, Shelley Winters, Helen Reddy and Jim Dale, with Sean Marshall playing the orphan boy who comes to a town with his magical dragon, his abusive adoptive parents in hot pursuit. It is certainly a departure for Lowery, who made the jump from editor to director on Saints, a gritty drama he wrote and directed that stars Rooney Mara,...
