Barrett Strong, one of Motown‘s founding artists and most gifted songwriters who sang lead on the company’s breakthrough single “Money (That’s What I Want)” and later collaborated with Norman Whitfield on such classics as “I Heard It Through the Grapevine,” “War” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone,” has died. He was 81.
His death was announced Sunday on social media by the Motown Museum, which did not immediately provide further details.
“Barrett was not only a great singer and piano player, but he, along with his writing partner Norman Whitfield, created an incredible body of work,” Motown founder Berry Gordy said in a statement.
Strong had yet to turn 20 when he agreed to let his friend Gordy, in the early days of building a recording empire in Detroit, manage him and release his music. Within a year, he was a part of history as the piano player and vocalist for “Money,...

Three of this year’s Oscar nominated tunes were penned by Black songwriters: Celeste reaped a bid (along with Daniel Pemberton) for “Hear My Voice” from “The Trial of the Chicago”; D’Mile, recent Grammy champ H.E.R. and Tiara Thomas collaborated on “Fight for You” from “Judas and the Black Messiah”; and supporting actor nominee Leslie Odom Jr. was cited with Nashville based singer/songwriter Sam Ashworth for “Speak Now” from “One Night in Miami.”
The first Black tunesmith to contend for Best Original Song at the Oscars was Quincy Jones who was nominated in 1967 (alongside lyricist Bob Russell) for “The Eyes of Love” from the long-forgotten “Banning.” (Jones earned the first of his four score Oscar nominations that same year for “In Cold Blood.”) He and Russell reaped another bid the following year for the title tune from “For Love of Ivy.” His last nomination to date was in 1985 for...

From 1964 to at least 1967, the Supremes helped define the sound of Motown and, by extension, the sound of mainstream American pop. The trio worked closely with the songwriter-producer team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier, and Eddie Holland to perfect a musical blueprint; an ideal blend of hard and soft — drums like jackhammers, cymbals like sword fights, and harmonies like whipped cream. Diana Ross sang lead, of course, while Mary Wilson and Florence Ballard handled backup, pulling from a formidable, constantly shifting arsenal of “whoa-ohs,” “whoo-oohs,” “yeah-yeahs,” “baby-baby’s,” and “help,...

If nothing else, CBS’ “Motown 60: A Grammy Celebration” special alerted America to the continued vitality of Smokey Robinson as a contemporary performer. Ten months from turning 80, the singer’s performances were focused and controlled as he weaved his sultry vocals through classics he wrote — the ballads “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Ooh Baby Baby,” chief among them. Producers aim for vocal-chemistry magic when they pair artists form different genres or generations, and the union of Robinson and a cappella stars Pentatonix on “Shop Around” provided one of the show’s highlights. It’s been 20 years since his last recording for Motown. Might it be time for a return?

Chicago – Like the recent movie-to-stage-musical adaptations, “The Producers” and “Young Frankenstein,” Chicago has become the proving ground before a Broadway premiere. The latest is almost a no-brainer, “The First Wives Club,” adapted from the 1996 film that starred Bette Midler, Goldie Hawn and Diane Keaton.
The big news is that the original song writing team of Brian Holland, Lamont Dozier and Eddie Holland (Holland-Dozier-Holland) have reunited to write new music for the show, adding to their familiar hits “Stop in the Name of Love,” and “Reach Out I’ll Be There.” 22 new songs have been added to “The First Wives Club” stage musical, representing the first new output in years from the famous songwriting trio.

David Gest has admitted that he made the biggest mistake of his career, when he turned down the chance to judge on Britain’s Got Talent.
The music producer – who was famously close friends with the late Michael Jackson – was offered a lucrative TV deal from Simon Cowell back in 2007 and opted to join the panel of flop TV show ‘Grease is the Word’ (alongside Sinitta and Brian Friedman) instead of the massive franchise that it Britain’s Got Talent.
He admits now that he made the “wrong” decision and chose the wrong show when Cowell gave him the choice.
He exclusively told Bang Showbiz: I did ‘Grease is the Word’ and ‘Soapstar Superstar’. Simon signed me on a very lucrative deal. He gave me a choice between ‘Grease is the Word’, which was four months or one week on a little show called ‘Britain’s Got Talent’. I picked the wrong one.

Actor Timothy Busfield is facing a fight to keep his California home after failing to maintain the repayments on the property. Mary’s new album is “more adult contemporary,” she says. “It was originally supposed to come out this month, but it isn’t quite there yet. Of course, there’s no radio to play new music these days. There’s the internet and, well, we’ll figure out something.”
Right now, Mary’s busy with her “Up Close” shows,...

People who share music files over the Internet will start facing the legal music as the recording industry said Wednesday that it will begin suing individuals who make sound recordings available on peer-to-peer networks. The RIAA, a coalition of musicians and performance guilds, plans to start gathering evidence today from alleged illegal Internet copyright pirates for use in lawsuits against individuals. Wednesday's announcement signals an escalation of the recording industry's attempts to stem the tide of music piracy that they say has decimated the industry. Lawsuits seeking damages will likely be filed in six to eight weeks. "The law is clear, and the message to those who are distributing substantial quantities of music online should be equally clear -- this activity is illegal, you are not anonymous when you do it, and engaging in it can have real consequences," RIAA president Cary Sherman said. "We'd much rather spend time making music than dealing with legal issues in courtrooms, but we cannot stand by while piracy takes a devastating toll on artists, musicians, songwriters, retailers and everyone in the music industry." Songwriter Lamont Dozier said the industry was forced to take the unprecedented step of attacking people who are their most likely customers because peer-to-peer piracy was destroying his ability to make a living. "Online music piracy through illegal file-sharing is killing the business as we know it today, and songwriters like myself won't be able to write the songs if there's no way for us to make a living," he said. "It's the only job I know how to do. If you love your music, please love the people who are creating it for you."...
