On Friday nights, IndieWire After Dark takes a feature-length beat to honor fringe cinema in the streaming age.
First, the spoiler-free pitch for one editor’s midnight movie pick — something weird and wonderful from any age of film that deserves our memorializing.
Then, the spoiler-filled aftermath as experienced by the unwitting editor attacked by this week’s recommendation.
The Pitch: Peering Eyes and Multiple Endings
Sliver really should be mandatory viewing for any “Basic Instinct” fan — or any lover of Sharon Stone noirs, for that matter. Stone reunites with “Basic Instinct” screenwriter Joe Eszterhas for this 1993 erotic thriller that feels more like a Brian De Palma-esque satire on the genre itself. Mixed with the paranoia of surveillance technology, the voyeurism of “Body Double,” and the dual campy performances from Billy Baldwin and Tom Berenger as part of a twisted love triangle, “Sliver” is the ‘90s film you’ve never heard of but will adore.

Al Ruddy, who co-created the famed CBS sitcom Hogan’s Heroes, then captured Academy Awards for producing the best picture winners The Godfather and Million Dollar Baby, has died. He was 94.
Ruddy, also credited as one of the creators of the long-running CBS police drama Walker, Texas Ranger, died Saturday following a brief illness at UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center, a publicist announced.
On the heels of The Godfather (1972), Ruddy produced another box-office hit with the original The Longest Yard (1974), the prison-set football movie that starred Burt Reynolds. Documentarians Brett Morgen and Alex Gibney paid tribute to “Super Size Me” filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, who died at 53 on Thursday of complications from cancer.
Morgen — whose films include “The Kid Stays in the Picture,” about legendary producer Robert Evans; “Jane,” about celebrated anthropologist Jane Goodall; and “Moonage Daydream,” about David Bowie — wrote that the Oscar-nominated Spurlock “actually changed the world with his art.”
He was referring to the 2004 film “Super Size Me,” in which Spurlock ate only at McDonald’s for 30 days. After the Oscar-nominated movie’s release and gargantuan success, the fast food chain discontinued its “super size” promotional campaign.
“Morgan Spurlock achieved what most artists only dream: he actually changed the world with his art. He was an amazing father, brother, friend and one of the most important and influential filmmakers of my time. My heart breaks for his family and friends,” Morgen wrote on social media.

Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone was met with mixed reviews upon its premiere but the show went on to age like fine wine with its subsequent seasons. The neo-western series also got itself two prequel series, 1883 and 1923. Soon, fans will get to see two more spin-offs – 6666 and 1944 – which have already been confirmed by Paramount. Clearly, Taylor Sheridan is not coming in slow.

To this, the creator of the show had nothing to say except unending praise for the former chief of Paramount, the late Robert Evans, who was responsible for some of the best movies that the company had made, including The Godfather.

It seems like we’re all set to witness another adaptation of a very popular cartoon character, as it was recently announced that Michael Caleo is allegedly working on a live-action adaptation of Popeye the Sailor Man.

The films of Francis Ford Coppola, at their core, are all about family. That theme goes for behind the camera as well as in front of it; according to interviews with Coppola on the Blu-Ray and 4K Ultra HD special features of the "Godfather" films, the director wished for the actors portraying the Corleone crime family to feel as much like a real family as possible before cameras began rolling. So, prior to making "The Godfather," Coppola arranged for the primary family members — Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, John Cazale and Talia Shire — to meet at an Italian restaurant in New York City, have dinner together and improvise as their characters the entire time.
With all that preparation, and the fact that the filmmakers were adapting Mario Puzo's 400-page novel into what became a three-hour movie whose narrative spans the length of a decade on screen,...

Sharon Stone has made some wild claims and angered 1993 erotic thriller “Sliver” co-star William Baldwin in the process. On The Louis Theroux podcast (via Entertainment Weekly), Stone alleged that legendary Hollywood producer Robert Evans (“The Godfather”) attempted to convince her to sleep with Baldwin during the production of the film to get a better performance out of him. An obvious case of sexual misconduct/harassment by Evans, even if it was in jest, led to a dust-up with the actress, which she believes impacted future work.

But here we are more than 30 years later discussing Sharon Stone, William Baldwin and their steamy sex scene…As it turns out, there is a pretty awful backstory to it, with Stone recently naming producer Robert Evans as the one who tried to coax her into having actual sex with Baldwin in order to improve his performance. However, Stone has caused quite a stir since she recently alleged that she felt compelled to have s*x with Baldwin in order to improve his performance. After reading the comments, the latter went on a lengthy rant on X about his memories of working with Stone, confusing both supporters and critics.

The more one studies the making of 1972's "The Godfather," the more two things become abundantly clear. One: Francis Ford Coppola was hellbent on adapting Mario Puzo's novel to the screen with a strong eye toward character and theme, an approach that Robert Evans and the regime of Paramount Pictures at the time did not understand nor believe in. And two: Coppola was incredibly miserable while making the film given all of the hurdles he had to get over and enemies he had to outwit, and was just barely able to complete the movie in the way he wanted to.
While there are many examples that illustrate this struggle, one of the most illuminating concerns the scene in which the Godfather, Don Vito Corleone (Marlon Brando), dies peacefully yet ignominiously (especially for a once powerful and feared man) in a tomato patch at his home, suffering a heart attack while playing with his grandson,...

Jenelle Evans is making serious waves on social media. The former Teen Mom 2 star hasn’t been a reality TV personality since 2019, but her legal drama, relationship woes, and family feuds have kept her in the headlines. While her epic battles with her mother, Barbara Evans, are legendary, little is known about her extended family. While it would be easy to assume Jenelle is an only child, she is not. Jenelle Evans is actually the second of three children born to Barbara Evans and Robert Evans; right now, one of her siblings is speaking out against her.
Jenelle Evans has an older sister
The older sister of Jenelle Evans is the sibling Teen Mom 2 fans know the most about. Ashleigh briefly appeared on the reality TV series during its early seasons. Ashleigh, who is older than Jenelle, has recently revealed that she’s had no contact with her younger sister for nearly a decade.

Once the hottest writer in town, Truman Capote also was a master at self destruction.
Cut to The Bistro, Beverly Hills circa 1973. Cradling his cocktail, Capote was at once amiable and petulant. I was sitting across from him at the elegant café to discuss his new screenplay, but the discussion soon became an argument.
Capote, always theatrical, finally turned to strangers at the next table. “I wrote a brilliant screenplay and this man from Paramount is telling me that I didn’t write it, I simply typed it,” Capote complained, an edge to his high-pitched voice. “What should I do to him?”
The strangers smiled. “Order another martini,” said one. “Better make it a double.”
A superstar writer and raconteur, the late Capote needed more than a drink at this point in his life, and our meeting was not helping him. I thought of him this week as his “character...

1974 was quite a year for cinema; 50 years later, Netflix (of all places) is celebrating the golden jubilee.
In recognition of the anniversary, the streamer on Wednesday launched a new, dedicated content row (and direct URL link) with the first films being honored under its new “Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection” banner. Each of the 14 films came to Netflix this month by way of Warner Bros., Paramount, or Sony — the distributors that license content to Netflix.
The 1974 collection includes “Alice Doesn’t Live Here Anymore,” “Black Belt Jones,” “Blazing Saddles,” “California Split,” “Chinatown,” “The Conversation,” “Death Wish,” “The Gambler,” “The Great Gatsby,” “It’s Alive,” “The Little Prince,” “The Lords of Flatbush,” “The Parallax View,” and “The Street Fighter” (“Gekitotsu! Satsujin ken”).
Netflix doesn’t plan to stop with disco’s heyday. In April, the streaming service will do the same for films from 1984 (turning 40); July will celebrate 1994 movies (turning 30); and in October...

Darlene Love’s annual television performance of “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” was essentially orphaned after “Late Show With David Letterman” went off the air in 2015, putting an end to the 28-year streak that had the music legend singing her signature holiday song with Paul Shaffer’s band on Letterman’s last original show before Christmas each December. But they all reunited — not over the air, but on YouTube — for a resumption of the tradition, nine years after the last time this particular caroling took place on CBS.
Watch the video, below.
Love has sung the modern standard she originated on “The View,” but her song has not had a regular nighttime slot since 2014. She recently sang it on the Rockefeller Center prime-time special with Cher, who also asked Love to perform it with her on her recent Christmas album. In 1843, London publishers Chapman & Hall released A Christmas Carol. Written by Charles Dickens and illustrated by John Leech, it was inspired in part by Dickens’s anger at inequality in his country, especially as it affected children. Despite its aversion to the upper classes, A Christmas Carol was an immediate hit among readers and critics. Given the book’s popularity, it’s no surprise that movie makers have picked up on the story many times. Between its clear redemption arc and ghostly premise, the story has everything that a good movie needs.
Still, not every adaptation of A Christmas Carol is created equal. So if you’re looking for the best of the worst man in film and literature, check out these ten great movies. And if you don’t like my picks, well, bah humbug I say.

Adapted from Nathanael West’s scabrously funny 1939 novel, The Day of the Locust reunites the creative triumvirate of producer Jerome Hellman, director John Schlesinger, and screenwriter Waldo Salt, who had previously teamed up for Midnight Cowboy. Superficially, the two films would seem to be quite different. One is a contemporary tale shot documentary-style on the mean streets of late-’60s New York. The other is an exquisitely detailed period piece filmed largely on Paramount soundstages in L.A. Midnight Cowboy favors gritty realism, while The Day of the Locust descends into a kind of deranged surrealism. But the films are linked since they both focus on loners and outcasts, salaciously prod the seedy underbelly of their milieus, and expose the unforgiving flipside of the American Dream.
The biggest difference between the two films is that Midnight Cowboy mitigates its ultimately tragic denouement with a certain tenderness between its damaged protagonists.

“Why is this like a dark secret? It’s just a movie.”
Ryan O’Neal, who died this week at 82, was a smart, good-natured man who was bemused by the contradictions of Hollywood. As he nervously awaited the release of Love Story five decades ago, he respected its shroud of silence but also was perplexed by it.
“Love Story is on its own blacklist, but I don’t get why,” he observed.
The movie, of course, was the surprise hit of its year, but even the bestseller on which it was based had suddenly appeared on the “don’t talk” list.
Why the mystery?

Hollywood circa 1970 was a small town compared with the Amazon-and-Apple world of this moment, and Love Story had been preordained as an embarrassment. Every studio had rejected the screenplay, and seemingly every “money” actor had turned down the lead.

When people think of open-air ice skating in New York City, well, they probably conjure up the festive Christmas-y confines of 30 Rockefeller Plaza. Unless they're old. Baby Boomer old. For members of the generation that protested the Vietnam War before turning into conservative zombies who treat Fox News as an informational IV drip, there is first and foremost the image of the late Ryan O'Neal's Oliver Barrett IV gazing forlornly at the Wollman Skating Rink in Central Park as Francis Lai's brilliantly overwrought main theme jerks tears from our ducts with a vicious intensity worthy of Pinhead.
Most Boomers won't get that reference. And for those born as early as the Reagan era who are generally incurious about movies, you probably haven't watched Arthur Hiller's "Love Story." It is a film of its time, but, oh, what a film it was, at least commercially. Based on Erich Segal...

Ryan O’Neal, Hollywood actor and star of Love Story, dies aged 82
There were plenty of handsome leading men in the Hollywood of the early 70s: Warren Beatty, Robert Redford, Burt Reynolds … but none of them were as purely and fascinatingly pretty as Ryan O’Neal, none with that cherubic pertness, complicated with a kind of wounded vulnerability: a pout, a frown, a beguiling flash of femininity to go with the dreamboat male-lead looks, which went hand-in-hand also with something worldly and hard-edged.
It is a great moment in 1973’s The Thief Who Came To Dinner when Ryan O’Neal’s jewel thief coolly inveigles himself into a fancy society soiree and Jacqueline Bisset is taken aback and perhaps even jealous of that brazen, faintly...

Ryan O’Neal is dead at the age of 82 after years of health struggles. His son Patrick announced the news on Instagram.
O’Neal was one of the true heartthrobs of the New Hollywood era, making many who saw him in “Love Story,” “What’s Up Doc?,” “Barry Lyndon,” and “The Driver” swoon. He also was much more than a pretty face, showing a capacity to let the great directors of the era mold him into something so much more powerful than his looks. And his life was defined in some ways, also, by heartbreak and misfortune: the loss of his great love Farrah Fawcett in 2009, the years-long legal troubles of his son Redmond, the rupture of his relationship with son Griffin, and fraught connection to his daughter Tatum. He was a prickly icon, someone whose public statements and demeanor defied people to like him. But the films he leaves behind...

Revered and reviled U.S. diplomat Henry Kissinger, whose death at 100 on Nov. 29 was met with the widespread view that his realpolitik was responsible for some of this country’s worst global war crimes, loved American celebrity — both his own, an expression of state power, as well as that of others, especially performers. He was “the ultimate starfucker,” noted Daniel Drezner, professor of international politics at the Tufts University’s Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, in an appraisal published earlier this year on the occasion of Kissinger’s centennial.
Prior to meeting President Richard Nixon in 1967, Kissinger made frequent trips to Santa Monica to consult with the Rand Corporation, a global policy think tank. But after being appointed as national security adviser by the newly elected president in 1969, his profile skyrocketed — and the glitz of Hollywood was within reach. Henry Kissinger, who as national security advisor and secretary of state for Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford became one of the most influential, famous and controversial diplomats of the 20th century, died Wednesday in his home in Connecticut. He was 100.
A consultant to almost every President of the United States since leaving the State Department in 1977, Kissinger was instrumental in the historic opening to China in 1972. He was also a hawk during the Vietnam War, a master strategist in geopolitics and Beltway power, and an architect of Middle East shuttle diplomacy. With a realpolitik legacy that is as complicated as any American statesman, the pragmatic and cynical German-born Kissinger also was a much lauded and criticized recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1973 for his role in ending the war in Southeast Asia.

It’s been a hot minute since we heard an update about an upcoming remake of The Saint starring Regé-Jean Page. Still, Deadline is here to blow the dust off this project with word that Doug Liman is officially directing The Saint remake. In addition to his starring role, Page will executive produce with Lorenzo Dibonaventura, Brad Krevoy, and the late Robert Evans.
Plot details for The Saint remake remain a mystery. However, Rory Haines and Sohrab Noshirvani are working on the script. The Saint is based on the 1920s book series that follows Simon Templar, also known as The Saint. Often described as a Robin Hood-like criminal and thief for hire, Simon can usually be found traveling the globe and looking for adventure. As I said, plot details on the new project are confidential at this time, though sources indicate that the team is working around the clock to reimagine the character.

Doug Liman is set to direct and oversee development on Paramount Pictures’ reboot of The Saint.
Regé-Jean Page, a breakout actor from Netflix’s Bridgerton, was earlier tapped to star in and executive produce the studio’s imagining of the movie based on the early 20th century adventure novels by Leslie Charteris that featured a mysterious man named Simon Templar taking down various bad guys.
Val Kilmer starred in Paramount’s 1997 original film The Saint as a master of disguise. The character has proven quite popular, appearing in comics, serials and, of course, movies and television. Roger Moore famously starred in the 1960s British TV series of the same name.

Paramount has signed “The Bourne Identity” filmmaker Doug Liman to direct the upcoming crime thriller “The Saint,” which will star Regé-Jean Page in a new imagining of the 1920s book series created by Leslie Charteris.
“The Saint” takes its name from the nickname of its protagonist, Simon Templar, a thief for hire who travels around the world serving as a modern day Robin Hood, stealing from the rich and protecting the powerless.
Charteris’ novels were adapted into a hit British 1960s TV series that became Roger Moore’s biggest claim to fame before he became James Bond. Paramount also adapted the books into a 1997 film starring Val Kilmer.
Page will also serve as an executive producer on the film, with Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Brad Kervoy. The late Paramount Pictures chief Robert Evans, who died in 2019, is also listed as a posthumous producer. “Black Adam” screenwriters Rory Haines and Sohrab...

In a country where women’s freedoms have historically been marginalized (a nationwide ban on female drivers was only lifted five years ago), new Mbc Studios boss Christina Wayne is determined to seek out the strongest female creative voices Saudi Arabia has to offer.

Director-writer-editor Brett Morgen’s David Bowie documentary Moonage Daydream is certainly unlike any musician-centered film you’ve seen before. The movie plays out almost as if the viewer is watching through a kaleidoscope, a fever dream of footage and soundscapes from the Bowie archives as well as from films and artworks the artist referenced in his storied career. Nominated for four Emmys this year (directing, writing, editing and sound editing), the director sat down with THR to discuss how he arrived on Bowie as a subject and his artistic process.
What draws you to a documentary subject at the outset?
As I reflect back over the years, I’m definitely drawn toward wildly creative people who live life on their own terms. That seems to be the one consistent link between Robert Evans, Jane Goodall, Kurt Cobain and David Bowie. On a more superficial level, when I’m approaching a subject,...

This post contains spoilers for "Barbie."
In "Barbie," Gloria's heartfelt monologue about the pressure for women to be perfect resonates so strongly with the Barbies that it snaps them out of the subservient spell they're under in the patriarchal Kendom. Alongside her daughter Sasha, Gloria leads a covert mission with some of the Barbies to take back Barbieland. They do this by giving Ken exactly what he wants: by stroking his ego. While one of the enlightened Barbies distracts Ken with her adoring gaze and innocent questions, the others capture the brainwashed Barbies — former writers and doctors turned into cheerleaders and maids — to re-educate them. Then, they plan to storm the pink Capitol Building and rewrite the Barbie constitution.
Tired of being "just Ken," the Kens use mansplaining as a way to overpower Barbie. In addition to chugging beers and admiring horses, these new hypermasculine Kens love to condescendingly lecture...

Francis Ford Coppola’s lifelong commitment to taking creative risks and betting on himself is culminating with “Megalopolis,” his self-financed passion project that recently wrapped production. The epic romance, which takes place in a futuristic city called New Rome, was dogged by rumors of on-set dysfunction that Coppola and his A-list cast denied. But the film’s staggering scale has impressed many cinephiles — including Jon Hamm.
In a new appearance on the Back to One podcast to promote his role in “Maggie Moore(s),” Hamm praised Coppola for taking such an ambitious swing.
“Look at what Francis Ford Coppola is doing right now,” Hamm said. “He’s making a $300 million movie that he just has wanted to make. I did a table read of it, I know how impossible this movie is to make. But he’s making it. And God bless him, that’s exactly what he should be doing.

Robert Evans claims to have told Francis Ford Coppola, after an initial private screening of The Godfather, “You shot a saga, but you turned in a trailer.” Unfortunately, Jennifer Esposito’s directorial debut Fresh Kills suffers the same fate, cramming a series’ worth of material into a sweeping feature film. In Fresh Kills, Staten Island, a beautiful suburb that stands just across the water from the city and not far from the infamous landfill, the Larusso family is about living the good life and moving to safety. Patriarch Joe (Domenick Lombardozzi) and wife Francine (Esposito) attempt to shield their daughters Rose and Connie from the family business. There are always little tells, and on moving day the girls discover a box of white powder in the moving van––leading Joe to discipline a foot soldier who later turns up dead.

Francis Ford Coppola achieved cinema perfection with The Godfather… and two years later, he did it again with The Godfather Part II. The two films remain some of the very best movies of all time, but much like Alien and Aliens, you might have a favourite. As for Al Pacino, The Godfather star clearly prefers the first movie.
Al Pacino recently sat down with David Rubenstein at the 92nd Street Y, New York for the People Who Inspire Us series. When Rubenstein asked Pacino if he thought The Godfather Part II was superior to the first movie, the actor replied, “No, I don’t. I really think it’s more — what would you call it — artistic or something, I don’t know. I don’t mean to play it down and be overly modest because I star in it with Bob de Niro, but at the same time, it’s a different film.

Gigi Pritzker’s entertainment company Madison Wells and veteran doc maker Nanette Burstein have signed a co-production deal to develop premium unscripted projects together.
The two-year agreement will see Burstein, a director, producer and writer best known for the Oscar nominated On The Ropes film, develop documentaries and docuseries with backing from Madison Wells.
“I am thrilled to be partnering with longtime collaborators, Madison Wells, on this new venture. Documentary filmmaking is the love of my life. It is high time I formed my own company to produce not only my own work but support new, up and coming talent in this burgeoning field,” Burstein said in a statement on Tuesday.
Longtime unscripted producer and network exec Lesley Goldman will oversee development across projects that will aim to spotlight pressing issues facing women today.
“We have a long-standing relationship with Nanette and her interests align with our own: telling stories...

It’s the final bow for Prime Video’s awards darling “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” and the latest season introduces a new narrative device that changes the whole show.
The opening episode of “Maisel” Season 5 picks up not with Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) or her family or manager Susie (Alex Borstein), but with her daughter — a 23-year-old Esther Maisel (Alexandra Socha) decades in the future.
Creator and showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino told IndieWire that the “Maisel” creative team has toyed with using time jumps for years, but felt that it was too early to dive into the characters’ futures.
“It wasn’t earned enough. Nobody gave a shit yet,” she said. “But it was a device we really wanted to use… we kind of went all in on it because it’s a fun storytelling device, and it helps inform in quicker pops. It makes the current story that we’re doing...
