Drenched in mystery, suspense, and deception, this four-part drama, based on the first novel in C.J. Sansom’s book series, is an eerie whodunnit adventure set in 16th-century England during the dissolution of the monasteries.
Shardlake’s sheltered life as a lawyer is turned upside down when Cromwell instructs him to investigate the murder of one of his commissioners at a monastery in the remote town of Scarnsea. Despite being surrounded by revered Hollywood giants in the industry, Charles Melton has been the talk of this season’s Supporting Actor race. His heart shattering turn as Joe Yoo in Todd Hayne’s scandalous melodrama “May December” has birthed a frenzy of passionate acclaim.
The 33-year-old TV star (“Riverdale”) has raked in a whopping 28 nominations from critics groups. Of these, Melton has won seven, including the New York Film Critics Circle. He also won at Gotham Awards in a combined category over, among others, Oscar frontrunners Ryan Gosling (“Barbie”) and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”).
He faces off against Gosling (2nd in our combined odds) this Sunday at the Golden Globes. Gosling benefits from his star power and being part of the most nominated film, “Barbie.” The category leader according to our odds, Robert Downey Jr. (“Oppenheimer”), has equal star power. He arguably has the most of any actor this century,...

Frances Sternhagen, the versatile actress whose half-century on Broadway included two Tony Awards, seven nominations and memorable roles in Equus, On Golden Pond and The Heiress, has died. She was 93.
Sternhagen died peacefully Monday of natural causes at her home in New Rochelle, New York, her family said in a statement obtained by The Hollywood Reporter. “We continue to be inspired by her love and life,” they noted.
With all her success on the stage, Sternhagen is perhaps best known for playing two mothers on television: the blue-blooded Bunny MacDougal on HBO’s Sex and the City and the overbearing Esther Clavin on NBC’s Cheers. She received Emmy nominations for both performances.
Sternhagen specialized in portraying characters who had a no-nonsense, overbearing attitude and plucky fortitude. She relished roles that were off the beaten track — the odder and more eccentric, the better.
“I must say it’s fun to play these snobby older ladies.

The 2020 Best Supporting Actor lineup, which included performances that ranged from 43 to 56 minutes long, proved that high screen times are fairly common in the category. One of the downsides to living in the new Golden Age of Television is that some shows, decent in their own right, will inevitably suffer in comparison to the best of the best.
I fear that may be the fate of Victoria, which has its U.S. premiere later tonight. The show presents inevitable comparisons to Netflix’s The Crown in its tale of one of England’s most famous queens, at times rising to the challenge of its competitor, and at other times, falling a bit short.
The series opens at the very beginning of Victoria’s famous reign. King William is dead and his niece, Alexandrina Victoria (Jenna Coleman), a girl of eighteen, will ascend to the throne. She’s lived a sheltered and inexperienced life at Kensington, reared under the strict oversight of her mother, the Duchess of Kent (Catherine Flemming...

ITV's Victoria stars Jenna Coleman as the young queen in her first years of a long reign...
This review contains spoilers.
Like a set of royal commemorative china advertised in the back pages of the Mail On Sunday, Victoria is a gleaming tribute to a certain idea of British history. Specifically, the idea of British history fictionalised in glossy Sunday night period dramas.
In that world, queens are beautiful, prime ministers are dreamy, scarred villains plot to a sinister string score and the working class provide comic relief and morality tales below stairs. Uncomfortable truths about the age in question are either swept to one side or fashioned into anachronistic badges of honour worn by the heroes. (“Yes, Lady Walpole-Margate, he may be a shirt-lifter, but he’s also a damned fine valet and in England, we judge a man’s chracter by the shine on his master’s shoes” etc.

Though historical drama fans in the United States might have to wait a bit, their UK counterparts will be excited for the next big period drama to take over their TV. The upcoming eight-part miniseries “Victoria” follows the early life of Queen Victoria (Jenna Coleman), from her ascension to the throne at the tender age of 18 through her courtship and marriage to Prince Albert (Tom Hughes). The series also features Rufus Sewell (“The Illusionist”) as Lord Melbourne, Peter Firth (“Equus”) as the Duke of Cumberland, Paul Rhys (“Vincent and Theo”) as Sir John Conroy, and many more.

The messiah is ‘beamingly benign’ and Pilate a ‘harassed fusspot’ in this Passion of the Christ-lite
In 2004, Mel Gibson’s The Passion of the Christ became an astonishing Easter hit, depicting in horrifyingly graphic fashion the torture and crucifixion of Jesus. This “faith-based” offering from Waterworld director Kevin Reynolds picks up where Gibson’s film left off (albeit in less brutal fashion), with Joseph Fiennes’s Roman tribune Clavius investigating reports that the man whose death he witnessed has risen from the grave. It’s solidly middling fare, soft of heart and script, and given to moments of foolishly miraculous folly. Peter Firth plays Pilate as a harassed fusspot, while Cliff Curtis (so brilliant in 2014’s The Dark Horse) is beamingly benign as the resurrected “Yeshua”.

Initially intriguing detective tale of ancient Rome hops genres into fantasy, with a strange manic-preacher-dream-boy seduction of its pragmatic protagonist. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): not a fan of “faith-based” movies
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Here’s something we don’t see often on the big screen: a detective story set in the ancient world. There are lots of novels, but I can’t think of a single other movie in the mold of Risen, an initially intriguing mystery tale in which a politically ambitious Roman soldier, Clavius (Joseph Fiennes [Hercules, Running with Scissors], who is terrific here), is set to a policing task by Pilate (Peter Firth: Spooks: The Greater Good, Pearl Harbor), the Roman governor of the province of Judea in the Middle East. It seems that the followers of a local rabble-rousing preacher who was just executed believe that...

From director Kevin Reynolds comes Risen, a faith-based movie with interesting pros and cons...
The trailer for Risen declares it “the most important manhunt in history”, which means they obviously haven’t seen The Fugitive. Let’s tread a bit carefully, though. I’m not about to knock anyone’s religion, but if Risen has a problem, it’s that it takes a stance on the divinity of Christ.
This isn’t a theological or ethical problem; it’s a narrative one. See, Risen bowls along quite agreeably as a sort of police procedural, benefiting from the mystery of whether a man really has risen from the dead or not. But when it makes a decision on this, the intrigue is lost and your interest wanes a bit.
Yes, a police procedural. Battle-scarred Roman tribune Clavius (a beefed-up Joseph Fiennes) is busy shoving his sword through people...

Chicago – I am a recovering Catholic, which I’ll tell you a million times – or maybe shortly after I meet you – and I have to say I had a well of nostalgia while experiencing “Risen,” the story of Jesus’s Resurrection and aftermath. It is enjoyable, in a strange way, for Christians and film fans alike.
Rating: 4.0/5.0
There is a lightness to the story, with a little historical re-creation thrown in for good measure. The Jerusalem of Christ’s time is portrayed with the dirt and grit of the age, which also lent an air of authenticity. It reminded me of the 48 hours after the John F. Kennedy assassination, in which the shock of the event reverberates like a wave. The intrigue of whether Jesus – called by his Hebrew name Yeshua in the film – was the true Messiah played right into into the I-wash-my-hands of those who were charged with nipping it in the bud.

Risen is a modest but engaging riff on the old post-crucifixion Easter legend as told through the eyes of a non-believer. In 33 Ad Jerusalem, Roman occupiers are under threat of a Jewish uprising. The Jews claim a Nazarene named Yeshua (aka Jesus – played by Clifton Curtis) is the Messiah, so Pontius Pilate (Peter Firth) promptly has him crucified, then orders Roman officer Clavius (Joseph Fiennes) to witness the execution and help dispose of the body. Three days later Jesus’ corpse has vanished from its cave tomb, though the entrance was blocked with a boulder and watched by guards. Pilate orders Clavius and Lucius (Tom Felton), to find Jesus and his disciples at all costs, for fear that if they don’t quickly produce a corpse, the Jews will rise up. Thus begins a manhunt of biblical proportions.

Catholicism classes everywhere, rejoice! Teachers now have another biblical epic worthy of a Friday treat; one that praises the word of the Lord with little inquisitive substance. Risen, directed by Kevin Reynolds (of Waterworld fame), has all the makings of a deceptive religious adventure, and plenty of bias to go around. Believers will find the holy spirit surging through their soul, while fence-teeterers might leave overstuffed, and a bit disillusioned, by a message that never grows larger than two simple words: “Have faith.” If you’ve got it, great! If you don’t? Find it! There. Risen has solved years of bloodshed and despair in the name of unseen deities. Too bad I had my money on the Flying Spaghetti Monster!

Risen is the epic Biblical story of the Resurrection, as told through the eyes of a non-believer. Clavius (Joseph Fiennes), a powerful Roman military tribune, and his aide, Lucius (Tom Felton), are tasked with solving the mystery of what happened to Jesus (referred to by the Hebrew name Yeshua in the film) in the weeks following the crucifixion, in order to disprove the rumors of a risen Messiah and prevent an uprising in Jerusalem.
Risen stars Joseph Fiennes (Shakespeare in Love), Tom Felton (Harry Potter), Peter Firth (The Hunt for Red October; “Mi-5”), and Cliff Curtis (“Fear the Walking Dead”).
Directed by Kevin Reynolds (Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves), with a score by Roque Baños, Risen opens in theaters nationwide Friday, February 19th.

Sorry, all you American fans of Game of Thrones’ Kit “Jon Snow” Harington. Spooks: The Greater Good is unlikely to make it onto many U.S. screens (ie, none at all, I suspect). It’s not that the BBC series it’s based on — Spooks, also known as Mi-5 during its niche broadcasts in the U.S. — isn’t well known in the U.S., although there is that to consider. Mostly, it’s that Greater Good posits an American citizen turned jihadi terrorist, Qasim (Elyes Gabel: Interstellar), as one of its villains, and the nefarious influence of the CIA as its ultimate big baddie.

It’s that time of year of again when we start scouring the internet for gift ideas. Luckily, Acorn media have served up another platter of top notch dramas for you to acquire this holiday season.
BBC One’s brilliantly clever 2013 drama Mayday comes to Acorn DVD on the 23 November. Starring Aiden Gillen (Batman: The Dark Knight Rises) it is full of more twists and turns than the Monte Carlo Grand Prix. The five part drama is based around a straightforward topic – the murder of a young woman. The events thereafter are handled in a rather unusual manner. There are four primary suspects but in the absence of a Marple or Poirot figure the audience are left to do the investigative work themselves.

★★☆☆☆ In a grey, rainy London, hued blue to add further sombre foreboding, the indomitable Harry Pearce (Peter Firth) finds himself in a familiar position: watching an op go south via screens in a new and improved Thames House, stuck between a rock and a hard place. Bharat Nalluri - who directed half a dozen episodes of Spooks - has created a feature based firmly on show which is at the same time expansive and reductive in its cinematic scope and only partly successful in its attempt to catapult the property from tube to silver screen.

When Spooks first hit television screens back in 2002 it was a real breath of fresh air. Gritty, realistic and not afraid to do terrible things to main characters who would previously have been deemed untouchable, it redefined what British drama on the small screen was all about while making London look both seedy and fantastic all at once.
Ten seasons later it bowed out gracefully after a decade of critical acclaim and that was that, or so we thought. With Bond riding high once more thanks to Skyfall and in the wake of a plethora of Bourne and Mission: Impossible movies, the announcement that Spooks was to finally hit the big screen raised the question of whether a small screen drama, impressive as it was, could make the transition to the multiplex and stand shoulder to shoulder with the aforementioned competition.
