John Leguizamo is by far one of the most recognizable Latino names in Hollywood, and the actor frequently comments and speaks up when he sees injustice being done, not only to him but to his co-stars and actors as well. Especially when it comes to the portrayal of Latinos in Hollywood and the issues of ethnic representation.
But, before he was known for that, Leguizamo was known for taking part in some of the biggest franchises in the industry. He gained widespread recognition for his roles in films such as ‘Carlito’s Way,’ ‘To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar,’ ‘Romeo + Juliet,’ the ‘Ice Age’ franchise, ‘The Kick-Ass’ franchise, and even the ‘John Wick’ franchise. But did you know that Leguizamo also almost played the Vulture in ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’?

John Leguizamo stands out as one of Hollywood’s most prominent Latino figures, known not only for his acting prowess but also for his vocal advocacy against injustices faced by himself, his peers, and the broader Latino community in the industry. He’s been a staunch critic of the underrepresentation of Latinos in Hollywood and is unafraid to speak out on the issue.
Yet, before carving this reputation, Leguizamo was a fixture in some of cinema’s biggest franchises. From ‘Carlito’s Way’ to ‘To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! John Leguizamo, Patrick Swayze, and Wesley Snipes portrayed three drag queens in the film To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everthing! Julie Newmar. The road movie follows the three New York City drag queens as they embark on a journey to Los Angeles to compete in the Miss Drag Queen of America Pageant. While all three lead actors gave praiseworthy performances, Leguizamo found the late Swayze difficult to work with during the film.

Leguizamo revealed that he improvised many of his lines in the film, which didn’t sit well with the Road House star. He also added that he and Wesley Snipes got along so well during the film since they were people of color, but didn’t share the same camaraderie with Swayze.

It’s late at night, and I see a thriller called An Awful Thing Has Gone And Happened (2022). Settling back the brain kicks in thinking I may see gun battles, car chases, and maybe a love story with a dark twist. The title alone makes me think this may be something odd, I mean who makes a title like that unless you are To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar (1995).
The film opens at night when one sees Augustus (John Dixon) wielding a large gun in a car trying to get up the courage. Over this, a screechy radio caller (Fiddling Leona) is going on about something totally different. Augustus mutters to himself, then gets out and trots to a spot where he digs up a cooler that is filled with money. Out of the darkness comes a figure that is revealed as Augustus’s father. John Leguizamo’s Latino crusade goes back decades. Over the past 30 years, his performances and outspoken off-screen presence have merged autobiography and activism, as he delivers assertive Latino personalities while advocating for more representation. From his acerbic and autobiographical one-man shows to dynamic screen roles such as “To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything, Julie Newman,” “Carlito’s Way,” and “Moulin Rouge!”, Leguizamo’s persona has essentially become a brand transferrable to any number of pop culture templates. In the last few years, he’s played the “Bruno” in “Encanto” earworm “We Don’t Talk About Bruno”, an obnoxious celebrity in the horror-satire “The Menu,” and Gor Koresh on “The Mandalorian.”
Now Leguizamo has added another notch to his resume: TV host. With MSNBC’s “Leguizamo Does America,” the 62-year-old travels across the country visiting Latino communities in cities ranging from New York to San Francisco. Leguizamo’s template is equal parts Anthony Bourdain and Rick Steves,...

Gender has become a hot political topic, and drag shows have become the battleground for a conservative war against self-expression. Fire-and-brimstone-spewing lawmakers are creating legislation to shut down drag shows and penalize anyone who performs drag around children. The biggest point of contention seems to be drag events at libraries, where performers read age-appropriate books to children. While it's entirely possible that some parents are just afraid that their children will learn to read and think for themselves, they claim that drag queens are "indoctrinating" children.
There's just one massive flaw in that logic: drag performers have been around forever and have been a huge part of pop culture for decades, so why are they only a concern now?
Drag has existed for centuries but had a boom in mainstream popularity in the 1990s, popularized by Madonna's "Vogue," which brought the drag culture of New York City ballrooms into people's living rooms via MTV.

Amazon is developing a series version of the Philip K. Dick novel “Clans of the Alphane Moon,” Variety has learned exclusively.
The project is being developed under Electric Shepherd Productions and Patrick Moran’s first look deals with Amazon Studios. Moran, via Patrick Moran Productions, is executive producing the project along with John Leguizamo, as well as as Isa Dick Hakcett, the CEO of Electric Shepherd. Bradley Kaplan will also executive produce.
“Clans of the Alphane Moon” is described as a “a subversive, genre-bending, sci-fi comedy about desperately trying to escape, and ultimately having to embrace our flaws, told through the prism of a Latinx family en route to a new, faraway moon.”
Should the project go forward, it would be the latest project based on Dick’s works at Amazon. The streamer previously aired the anthology series “Philip K. Dick’s Electric Dreams” as well as the alternative history...

In 2000, the Tony Awards added a fifth slot to acting categories (as long as there are sufficient candidates), and just five years later added one on to the directing categories. The Emmys bumped nominees up from five starting in 2009 and have included up to eight nominees to a category in recent years. The Critics Choice Awards, anxious to honor as many potential Oscar nominees as possible, went up to six acting and directing nominees a few years ago, and this year suddenly supersized the directing category all the way up to 10.
So why have the Oscars mostly stayed firm with the five-per-category stance they have employed for decades?
The Academy famously doubled its Best Picture category to 10 nominees back in 2009, shifted to a variable number two years later and then went back to a guaranteed 10 last year. Their initial move was largely due to the outcry over the snubbing of critically acclaimed,...

For Kennedy Ann Scott, performing in drag offered a lifeline. She’d been bullied by kids in grade school and subjected to physical harm for being a boy who was, in their judgment, too effeminate. Discovering drag — she cites To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar as a touchstone — opened Scott’s eyes to the possibility of turning the very things her tormentors hated into a source of power.
“It taught me to find the confidence that I never thought I’d have,” Scott says. “It taught me how to be me.

In 1993, Rocky Morton's and Annabel Jankel's "Super Mario Bros." was released in theaters to terrible reviews and widespread derision. Many audiences at the time could be heard rejecting the film out of hand, as it invented its own, bizarre premise wholly separate from the games on which it was based. The games dealt hallucinatory adventure/fantasy scenarios about plumbers trekking across a land lousy with hammer-throwing turtles and power-granting mushrooms to rescue a princess that had been kidnapped by a fire-breathing dragon.
The film, in contrast, posited that when Earth was struck by the meteor that killed the dinosaurs, it created two parallel Earths. One Earth was the familiar realm where humans evolved from apes. The other was a world where dinosaurs survived and continued to evolve into human-looking creatures. The dinosaur dimension, however, was facing ruin at the hands of its tyrannical leader King Koopa (Dennis Hopper...

After expressing his outrage over James Franco being cast as Fidel Castro in the independent feature drama Alina of Cuba, Primetime Emmy winner John Leguizamo has expounded on his stance regarding Hollywood casting non-Latinos in Latino roles. Specifically, in an Instagram post earlier today, he says “Alright, look, I got no problems with James Franco, yo, Ok?” while explaining, “I grew up in a era where Latin people couldn’t play Latin people on film.”
Also earlier today, Alina of Cuba producer John Martinez O’Felan released a statement defending the casting of Franco who is of Latin-Portuguese heritage and responding to Leguizamo’s initial protest, saying “I want to point out that his odd comments, if you base them on genealogy, are a blind attack and lack any factual substance.”

The Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sdcc, heck, even this site! None of it would exist without Wesley Snipes. Before he took on the role of C-list vampire hunter Blade for the 1998 movie directed by Stephen Norrington, the only successful superhero movies featured Batman or Superman, and those franchises were on the downswing. The only previous Marvel movie released in theaters was 1986’s notorious flop Howard the Duck. Most Marvel properties were substandard direct to VHS releases, such as the Punisher movie starring Dolph Lundgren and missing a skull logo, or embarrassing tv movies, especially Nick Fury: Agent of Shield with David Hasselhoff in the title role.
With Blade, Snipes and his effortless poise transformed the tired superhero genre into something exciting, vibrant, and cool. Despite the disastrous and controversial Blade: Trinity, fans have long been clamoring for Snipes to return to the genre and join the MCU. Most expected him to...

Movie titles don’t necessarily make or break a movie on their own, but this is a look at ten movies where their titles didn’t do them any favors.
In the realm of zaney movie titles, I can appreciate those that are trying to be fun or silly, like 1964’s The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed Up Zombies or even Dude, Where’s My Car? Those are passable because they actually give you an idea of what to expect while perhaps generating a chuckle or a shake of the head. I can even deal with lame puns and wordplay in titles, as long as they make sense for the material at hand. Examples include Blacula! or Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties. Even titles that are so straightforward they end up being dumb aren’t lying or misleading to us, and so they shouldn’t...

Welcome back to the Weekend Warrior, your weekly look at the new movies hitting theaters this weekend, as well as other cool events and things to check out.
Two Very Different Movies Look to Divide Up the Weekend Box Office Business
With Disney’s Beauty and the Beast continuing to dominate at the box office with $90 million this past weekend, and Saban’s Power Rangers (Lionsgate) also doing exceedingly well with $40 million in second place, you wouldn’t think anyone would try to release a movie that might get overshadowed by those two blockbusters.
That said, what’s interesting about this weekend is the fact there are two very different movies that are competing very heavily for second place with DreamWorks Animation’s latest animated family film, The Boss Baby (20th Century Fox), taking on the live action English remake of Ghost In The Shell (Paramount), starring Scarlett Johansson. The 1990′s introduced the world to Quentin Tarantino, saw the creation of the Nc-17 rating, and began the slow call toward fully computer animated films. It began the slow (still slow) movement toward a more diverse industry, with the first African-American director earning an Oscar nomination (John Singleton for “Boyz in the Hood”). And the year after one of the greatest years in the history of film, 1995 came plodding along, trying to keep up. So, for the first definitive list of 2015, we are going to look back 20 years at a year that, at first glance, doesn’t look so hot. It’s ripe with flops, but it’s also full of debuts, trailblazing beginnings, and better films than it gets credit for. But, the caveat still stands: this is not a “best of” list. Best of Late Night TV: Bill Murray's Tinder Talk, John Leguizamo's Fight With Patrick Swayze (Video)
If you're like us and value your sleep, you probably nodded off into your Ambien dreamland before the party started on post-prime time TV. Don't worry; we've got you covered. Here's the best of what happened last night on late night.
Jimmy Fallon, David Letterman and Seth Meyers are still on vacation with repeats, but don't worry: Bill Murray and Tenacious D were around to save Tuesday night.
Bill Murray was on "Jimmy Kimmel Live" -- and you have to pay close attention to his amazing shirt with what looks like divers on it. His outfit is just everything. Jimmy shared all the great parenting advice Bill gave him before Jk and his wife welcomed their child. "I don't know much," Bill said, "but I talk a lot about what I do know." That's how it should be. He has six boys, so he should know. He shared a good...

Two time Oscar nominee Melinda Dillon turns 75 today. Since we don't like any major actresses to totally fade from public consciousness when they stop working, let's look back. Though her last working year was 2007 her most recent high profile gig goes back much further to a SAG nomination as part of the ensemble of Magnolia (1999, pictured left) in which she played wife and mother to Phillip Baker Hall and Melora Walters.
Though she'd been working for a decade before it in small parts (TV guest gigs and improvisational comedy) her first real claim-to-fame came as "Memphis Sue" Woody Guthrie's wife in the Best Picture nominated bio Bound for Glory (1976). She received a Golden Globe nomination for "Best Acting Debut" (a now long defunct category) even though it wasn't her debut. Dillon's breakout led to bigger parts and two well-regarded Oscar nominations though curiously the Globes, who had first honored her,...

The Climate Was Changing: Warchus Revisits 80s Set Instance of Activism
British director Matthew Warchus first appeared in 1999 with his directorial debut, Simpatico, based on the Sam Shepard play. While it received a rather underwhelming response despite starring Jeff Bridges, Nick Nolte and a supporting Sharon Stone, Warchus has been off the map for the past fifteen years until Pride. An insightful screenplay from first time writer Stephen Beresford is the first of many surprises in this well performed resuscitation of the 1984 UK mining strike, which examines the possibilities of tolerance and supporting those in need of assistance. Though its tale may seem merely a footnote in the long haul toward Lgbt equality, Warchus has concocted a relatable film meant to cross boundaries and audiences, and thankfully isn’t shackled down by its own good intentions.
In 1984 Britain, the National Union of Mineworkers called a series of strikes that crippled the government.

Jason Statham, Syllvester Stallone, Antonio Banderas and Wesley Snipes on their best action moments on screen...
Last week, we toddled along to the press conference for The Expendables III, mainly to enjoy the sight of many of our action heroes sat in a line. We've been to press conferences for each of the films. and once again, Sylvester Stallone fielded the majority of the queries (although that obviously defies logic here at Den Of Geek when Jason Statham is sat in the same room as us).
Alongside Stallone and The Statham were Wesley Snipes, who breezily quipped his way through any question sent his way, Antonio Banderas (who we’ll have a full interview with soon), producer Avi Lerner and newcomer/Twilight alumni Kellan Lutz.
Of interest among the usual array of questions that vary from good to weird? Well, when asked if the toned down violence was intentional Sly...

The Expendables III's world premiere is taking place in the UK capital tonight, with stars including Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger expected to be in attendance.
We're hoping for a full-on waltz up the red carpet...
Stallone, Wesley Snipes, Antonio Banderas, Kellan Lutz and Jason Statham attended a press conference ahead of the screening at the Corinthia Hotel in the capital this afternoon (August 4), where the Rocky star explained the movie's PG-13 rating.
To celebrate the third instalment of the action adventure, we're imagining a prequel by travelling back in time to bring you some classic photographs of the film's main stars.
So here are 15 heyday snaps of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Snipes and Lundgren looking like young, bicep-bulging mean machines.
Be prepared...
1. Arnold Schwarzenegger as a young whippersnapper bodybuilder back in 1967... The actor flexes his biceps and eye-wateringly explosive-looking pectorals in an advertisement for a German protein product.
2. Arnie shows off...

Happy 50th to the enduring character actor and one man show trouper John Leguizamo. He has his first (film) hit in years this summer as part of the ensemble of Chef and he's arguably even its secret weapon; his cheerful sideline energy helps cut the sometimes sour taste of the movie's vaguely offputting self pitying / self aggrandizing central character business featuring Jon Favreau.
But Leguizamo has been doing that for years, significantly boosting or even altering the energy of pictures he was fourth or fifth or, you know, twelfth billed in. It's true that his brand of sideline showmanship often teeters towards hardly altruistic hamminess; he's an unrepetant scene stealer. But it was a treat to see him again, I raedily admit, and so shortly after I happened to watch his most recent one man show "Ghetto Klown" on cable or streaming or something (I forget) wherein he talks about this impending 50th birthday,...

Looking back on his colorful life thus far for laughs, John Leguizamo's "Ghetto Klown" is packed to the gills with stories about the actor's early life in Queens and his eventual stardom.
One such story in the special, a filmed version of his 2011 one-man Broadway show premiering on HBO on Saturday (March 22), finds Leguizamo recounting a dust-up with Patrick Swayze on the set of the campy drag classic "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar."
In the Nsfw preview clip above, Leguizamo hilariously retells the incident that led to a brawl between the two actors -- who were dressed in their character's drag at the time. It creates quite an amusing image, to say the least.

As HIV-positive transvestite Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club, Jared Leto has exploded back onto the acting scene, earning tons of awards-season buzz. We here at VH1 aren’t really in the business of heaping high-minded kudos on thespians — we just like to watch others do so — but we do want to add the Thirty Seconds to Mars frontman to a prestigious list we just made up: Our favorite roles played by men in drag.
This is a controversial ranking, we’re aware. Whither the cast of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert? Don’t the late Patrick Swayze’s gorgeous cheekbones in To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar warrant a mention? Well, sorry, these are our favorites, and we went for the dudes who made us laugh in White Chicks, Tootsie, Back to the Future Part II and, naturally, Mrs. Doubtfire, by doing much more than...

Note to Sami, Kate, and Gabi: Before you dump a body in the river … make sure he’s dead
Okay, does anyone else get a definite “Three Witches” vibe when Sami, Kate, and Gabi are together?
Woo-Hoo! Take me to the river … We get another look at the hilarious body dumping scene. This is what I want from my soap operas, dammit! Nick feels the cold water and springs to life, grabbing at Sami while Kate and Gabi scream … bloody murder … sorry.
The current pulls Nick away, as Gabi screams “He’s alive!” Sami responds “Well, not any more.” Oh Sami, sometimes I do adore you.
Will and Sonny are still wearing their eggplant finest. Will apologizes for telling Sonny he was making him choose between him and Ari. But what made Sonny came home? Sonny says, “I ran into your mother.” Will quips “And so you ran shelter? That’s a good call.

Beeban Kidron, who has had an eclectic directing career from "To Wong Foo Thanks For Everything, Julie Newmar," "Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason," and the Jeanette Winterson adaptation "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit," is back with her new documentary "InRealLife," which will screen as part of the Toronto International Film Festival's Mavericks section. "InRealLife," a reference to the popular phrase, sometimes shortened to "Irl," that signifies offline life, explores the impact of online communication on the world's teenagers, so-called digital natives. According to Tiff, here's the description of the film: After observing the immersive behaviour of her own teenagers, director Beeban Kidron set out to answer the question: What exactly is the internet, and how is it changing us? She talks directly to teens about how technology shapes their expectations of friendship, their cognition, and their sexuality. She interviews experts including Wikipedia's Jimmy Wales, writer Clay...

It's hard to pinpoint exactly what has brought Lady Bunny the most fame.
The legendary drag queen, who created the non-defunct annual New York City drag festival Wigstock in the mid-80s, has been performing, DJing, releasing music and appearing in films and on TV shows like "RuPaul's Drag Race" and "RuPaul's Drag U" for nearly three decades.
Known for hilarious -- and filthy -- parody covers of tracks by pop stars like Katy Perry, Bunny released an uncharacteristically straight forward dance single, "Take Me Up High" (see the video above) in July and the track has already climbed to number 29 on the Billboard Dance Chart.
We caught up with Bunny to chat about her new song, her connection to the transgender community, how her life changed after 9/11 and more.

Whoopi Goldberg recently made her directorial debut at the 2013 Tribeca Film Festival. Her groundbreaking documentary, "I Got Somethin' To Tell You," is about the life of African-American and openly lesbian stand-up comic Moms Mabley, born Loretta Mary Aiken.
The North Carolina-born comedian graced stages such as New York City's Apollo Theatre and Carnegie Hall with her quirky acts touching on racism and romance between the 1920s and 1960s. Mabley came out in her late twenties and often made her sexuality a part of her routines.
She appeared in the 1933 film "The Emperor Jones" alongside Paul Robeson, which was inducted into the Library Of Congress' National Film Registry Library in 1999. Her wardrobe in the film was markedly androgynous, an unusual sight on a woman in the 1930s.
She was also referenced in the 1995 queer favorite "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar," starring Wesley Snipes, Patrick Swayze and John Leguizamo.

"I feel that I am very fortunate to have a lady friend that just happens to have an adam's apple."
Like so many other facets of Western culture that can trace their origins back to Ancient Greece — democracy, medicine, poetry, philosphy, among others — modern cinema owes a great deal to the Greeks and their festivals held in “theatrons” in honor of the god Dionysus. In those days, women were not allowed to participate in public life so any female roles were played by men.
Women have come a long way (baby) since then, but the tradition of men dressing like women made the leap from the stage to the screen when Charlie Chaplin played "Wife" in the 1914 short A Busy Day and the trend continues today, with entire franchises built around men in drag. Some men in drag movies are just that, a drag, but others have surprised, entertained, and enthralled us,...

Chicago – From Toulouse-Lautrec in “Moulin Rouge” and Luigi in “Super Mario Bros.” to Sid in “Ice Age” and Chi-Chi in “To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar,” John Leguizamo has made a career out of playing a wide array of colorful and challenging roles. In 2010, the actor made a celebrated return to the stage and tackled his trickiest role to date: himself.
In “Ghetto Klown,” Leguizamo dug deep into his own tumultuous past, examining everything from his early journeys through Hollywood to his troubled relationship with his father. Ben De Jesus’s PBS documentary, “Tales from the Ghetto Klown” offers a candid look at the performer’s creative process as he writes the show, workshops it in snow-bound Chicago, garners cheers and mixed reviews on Broadway and spends a year transforming it into a Spanish-language show for Columbian audiences. Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

What is Movie News After Dark? It’s a nightly column about movies that may or may not be skimming the good stuff off the top of tonight’s news sundae because it needs to go get caught up on Breaking Bad. Don’t worry, there’s still plenty happening… We begin this evening with an image of Forest Whitaker as Eugene Allen in The Butler. The Lee Daniels directed film focuses on the long-time White House servant and will also star the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Robin Williams, John Cusack and Alan Rickman. 1. North by Northwest – The folks at Art of the Title profile one of my favorite Saul Bass designed title sequences of all-time. That of Hitchcock’s North by Northwest. 2. Asylum of the Daleks – A new trailer has emerged for the upcoming season premiere of Doctor Who. 3. How to write a bad review – For those who want to review things for a living, Salon...

In honor of this milestone, we've decided to settle the question that's been burning us up for way too long. Who is the greatest black action star of all time?

Michael Vartan is probably best known for his role opposite Jennifer Garner on TV's "Alias," but the affable French-born actor has made an impression on the big screen in movies like "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything! Julie Newmar," "Never Been Kissed," "One Hour Photo" and "Monster-in-Law." In the exciting French-American action film "Colombiana," on DVD and Blu-ray this week, Vartan has a sexually charged but emotionally distant relationship with an assassin played by Zoe Saldana.
We chatted up Vartan about all sex and no gunplay for his character in "Colombiana," how he feels about the way "Alias" wrapped up, and the skills involved in picking up his future wife in a Whole Foods parking lot.

We start the Top 7. You finish the Top 10.
In honor of this week’s release, Jack & Jill, we’re doing a countdown of truly awful cinema. If you’re anything like me, you’re still reeling from the fact that this movie was made at all. So, we here at Tsr, have decided to take that idea and run with it.
This week’s Top 7 list is devoted to movies that it’s hard to believe were made. Now, before we begin, it’s important to note that this list is dedicated to the premise of these movies.
