Jesse Dayton spent Halloween onstage at the Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, playing Elvis Presley songs behind Glenn Danzig. It’s the kind of oddball convergence of personalities and styles that could only find its way to Dayton, an outspoken Texas singer, songwriter, and guitarist who has collaborated with everyone from Misfits Glenn to “Rhinestone Cowboy” Glen.
“Glenn’s an old-school rock star. He bought everyone in the crowd a Voodoo Doughnut with an upside-down pentagram on it — something Glen Campbell would never,” Dayton says.

This fall, Kinky Friedman will be releasing Resurrection, a new studio album of original songs produced by Larry Campbell. After all but retiring from songwriting for three-plus decades, Friedman’s latest album follows in the wake of last year’s Circus of Life, a meditative collection that rejuvenated the Texas singer-songwriter’s drive to make music in his eighth decade. “Circus of Life was more of an intellectual’s record,” Friedman tells Rolling Stone Country. “I mean, I hate intellectuals, but I am one, some of the time.”

Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese will hit select theaters and Netflix on June 12.
Martin Scorsese knows music. His movies have some of the best soundtracks in film, he pointed cameras at Elvis Presley, documented The Band's final concert with the film The Last Waltz, done documentaries on The Rolling Stones and even co-produced the short-lived HBO record industry series Vinyl. His new Netflix documentary Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese, will shed light on a legendary tour.
“Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese captures the troubled spirit of America in 1975 and the joyous music that Dylan performed during the fall of that year," Netflix said in a statement. "Part documentary, part concert film, part fever dream, Rolling Thunder is a one of a kind experience, from master filmmaker Martin Scorsese.”

For years, rumors have circulated among Bob Dylan fans that a documentary about his legendary, star-studded “Rolling Thunder Revue” tour of 1975-76 was in the works, and occasional whispers had a name attached: Martin Scorsese. Now, the cat can come officially out of the bag. Variety has exclusively learned that Netflix plans to release the movie in 2019, with the director’s name actually in the title: “Rolling Thunder Revue: A Bob Dylan Story by Martin Scorsese.”
The tightly-under-wraps project is said not to be quite as much of a straightforward documentary as Scorsese’s previous Dylan film, 2005’s “No Direction Home: Bob Dylan,” which zeroed in on Dylan’s crucial 1965-66 “going electric” period. “There’s a reason the word ‘story’ appears in the title,” said a source, hinting that the director may be playing with the form more in this particular film.

Kinky Friedman cracks a mischievous smile as a fan hands him a Kinky Friedman Talking Action Figure. Surrounded by a smattering of onlookers, Friedman, cigar in mouth, leans down and presses the button on the toy, a remnant from the country singer’s 2006 gubernatorial campaign in Texas.
“If you elect me the first Jewish governor of the state of Texas, I’ll reduce the speed limit to 54.95.”
“That one was hard to overcome,” Friedman, beaming, looks up and says before letting the action figure cycle through some of the irreverent Friedman campaign slogans.

Kino resurrects an odd curio with Shoot the Sun Down, a counter-culture Western from 1978, notable for headlining Christopher Walken just prior to his Oscar win for The Deer Hunter and Margot Kidder before she was that year’s Lois Lane in Superman. Of further note, director David Leeds, who financed with his own production company, would never again lend his name to another film in any capacity. The film, which is obviously modeled after Sergio Leone’s Man With No Name series, considering it’s mysterious protagonist, has all the makings of a subversive genre entry, it’s stance on violence guided by an incredibly idiosyncratic score (that’s not Ennio Morricone) and Michael Chapman’s beautifully photographed landscapes (with plenty shots of rising/setting suns for its grand motif). However, muddled plotting and a comatosely constructed climax peg the film as rather forgettable, which is unfortunate considering its strange ambience.

Christopher Walken and Margot Kidder star in Shoot the Sun Down, a 1978 counter-culture Western.
The same year that Christopher Walken (Seven Psychopaths) won an Oscar for The Deer Hunter (1978) and Margot Kidder was whisked away in Superman (1978), they starred in of David Leeds’ counter-culture Western Shoot the Sun Down.
A stylized meditation on America’s history of violence, in the tradition of Sergio Leone (The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), the movie observes the intersection of a former Confederate soldier-turned-bounty hunter (Walken), a British maidservant desperate to escape indentured servitude (Kidder), and a vicious mercenary in search of Native American scalps and Montezuma’s gold (Geoffrey Lewis, Miss Nobody).
Kino’s restored director’s cut of Shoot the Sun Down, director/co-writer Leeds’ only feature, marks the film’s first-ever release on Blu-ray or DVD.

Why the hell not?

Should Kinky Friedman be governor of Texas? There are plenty of reasons why the hell not. There also are plenty of reasons to watch Along Came Kinky ... Texas Jewboy for Governor, a lively 2009 documentary about Friedman's quixotic campaign for the office.
A mystery novelist, satirist and proudly offensive musician by trade (his band, the Texas Jewboys, was famous for songs like "Asshole from El Paso"), Friedman entered the 2006 Texas gubernatorial race with no political experience but plenty of name recognition as a Texas icon. He found himself in an unprecedented four-way race that offered voters and pundits plenty of political Lone Star lunacy.
The campaign was surprisingly fierce and competitive, at least to determine who would be runner-up to incumbent governor Rick Perry. Perry relied on his incumbency and redder-than-red conservative record to remain comfortably ahead in...

A former gubernatorial candidate in Texas is turning heads with his unique sense of humor after once again joking that he would like to be cremated and have his ashes sprinkled on the head of current Texas Governor Rick Perry (R).

Director: Geoff Marslett Writer: Geoff Marslett Starring: Mark Duplass, Zoe Simpson, Paul Gordon, Howe Gelb, Liza Weil, James Kochalka, Cynthia Watros, Michael Dolan, and Don Hertzfeldt Damn Russians with their sneezing and their snot and their general lack of hygiene! Pierre (Garry Peters) sneezes fluorescent green snot all over a robot named Beagle II while he and his bossy cohort Andrei (Jeremy Pollet) load it into a Mars-bound rocket. Upon landing on Mars, Beagle II breaks down – all thanks to Pierre’s sticky green snot – and loses contact with Earth rendering it unable to fulfill its mission to locate life on Mars. Art is the next robot to be sent to Mars. However, this robot seems to have a mind (and heart) of its own as it decides to alter its landing site in an attempt to locate Beagle II. The altered flight path exposes Art to damaging elements,...

Mars, the first feature of Austinite Geoff Marslet, is an ambitious visual feat that wanders aimlessly in an amorphous, unsatisfying plot.
Indie favorite Mark Duplass stars as Charlie Brownsville, a world famous astronaut with a bedazzled jumpsuit and an ever-changing hipster hairstyle. As the disposable member of a three-man crew, Brownsville’s simple task is updating a smarmy television twosome with any developments on their historic voyage to the red planet.
The remainder of the dragging time Brownsville exchanges sarcastic banter with Casey Cook (Zoe Simpson) and Hank Morrison (Paul Gordon) as they float sleepily in a seemingly improvised sci-fi story. Other than a few homegrown inside jokes, like Kinky Friedman as the President, the characters and their interactions are unremarkable.
The candy-coated rotoscope technique is engaging at first, but the novelty wears quickly with the realization that there’s not much happening underneath the unique animation style. For an...

It’s Libby from Lost as you (and Hurley) have never seen her before – animated! Cynthia Watros stars alongside musician/actor Kinky Friedman (he plays the President) in new indie film Mars, which premieres this weekend at SXSW. Mark Duplass (Humpday, The Puffy Chair) plays an astronaut who goes on the first manned mission to Mars, looking for “life and love.” The whole project is the brainchild of Austin, Texas-based animator Geoff Marslett, who has said he wanted the film to look like a cross between A Scanner Darkly and Sin City. But he also notes the film is...

Less than a week worth of recovering from the Sundance Film Festival, and we are already looking forward to our next, big film fest coverage. That would be the South by Southwest Film Festival held annually in Austin, Texas. Last year, Scott and I brought you all kinds of coverage from the Lone Star State, and this year doesn’t look to be much different.
With that, the announcement came last night of the feature films that will be playing at the SXSW Film Festival. Previous announcement were already made about films like Cold Weather, Electra Luxx, Hubble 3D, Lemmy, Saturday Night, and The White Stripes: Under Great White Northern Lights making their debut. Kick-ass was recently announced as the opening night film, as well.
Among the other films being presented this year are some Sundance darlings, a few, highly anticipated premieres, and MacGruber.

I was so excited at seeing the SXSW line up last night that I completely forgot to post it and started searching the interwebs for cool content to go with it. Oops. Yes, I wish I was there but alas, it wasn’t mean to be (though don’t despair. We’ll be bringing you wicked awesome coverage).
But enough rambling, you want to know what’s all playing. Well, for a start there’s the much anticipated McGruber (trailer), the Duplass’ semi-mainstream comedy Cyrus, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs (trailer, review), Daniel Stamm’s horror flick Cotton and that’s on top of the previously announced titles which include Electra Luxx (Carla Gugino as a pregnant porn star? Bring. It. On.) and Kick-Ass (trailer). That’s already a great line-up but dear me, some of the other titles are pretty awesome too.

Late yesterday the SXSW Fim Festival, which runs from March 12-20 in Austin, TX, announced the full lineup of films that will be screening at this year’s event. And baby, it’s quite a list. Mixing big name films with intimate indie gems, the sheer number of films and the vast array of talented filmmakers is sure to be a hit with attendees and critics alike.
This lineup includes premieres of studio films such as Universal’s MacGruber, Lionsgate’s teen superhero actioneer Kick-Ass and smaller films like Tim Blake Nelson’s Leaves of Grass, Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s Micmacs, Michel Gondry’s The Thorn in the Heart and Steven Soderbergh’s And Everything Is Going Fine. With so many films to watch, it will be very difficult to find time to seem them all during the events nine days. But hell, we’re going to try.

The 2010 SXSW Film Festival and Conference has announced its initial slate of titles. The list is rife with hot world premieres (Kick-Ass), films fresh from Sundance (The Runaways, Cyrus), hot titles from the 2009 editions of Tiff and Cannes that haven't had much U.S. play (Enter the Void, Dogtooth, Trash Humpers), interesting documentaries (Lemmy, The People v. George Lucas) and much, much more. Simon Rumley's Red, White & Blue, which has received much praise on Twitch based on its Iffr screenings, will have its North American premiere.
Midnight programming courtesy of Fantastic Fest is also back with titles like Higanjima, Monsters, Serbian Film, Outcast, and a yet to be announced special film. Keep eye out for SXSW coverage at Twitch, but for now, pursue the massive list below (descriptions courtesy of SXSW).

Las Vegas -- Muffled rather than manic, business-like if not actually busy --- those descriptions best capture the first full day of activity at the 47th annual Natpe confab, which unspooled Monday.
While a few syndicators duly obliged by announcing clearances for various off-net or off-cable shows during the past couple of days, the recession has clearly taken its toll on what used to be the center of the syndie biz -- the bustling, glad-handing Natpe convention floor.
No longer.
"There's more carpet laid down here than there are people," is how one longtime attendee put it, noting how all the booths had been downsized and all signs of ostentation removed. The Mandalay Bay floor itself is mercifully smaller than in the past few sessions, making at least for more efficient foot traffic. There is, however, no glitz and no new first-run hopefuls for national exposure other than CBS TV...

If you haven't heard about Screen Door Film, you've been missing out. This organization has been giving Austin audiences a chance to see lesser-known shorts and features, especially locally made films, for several years. They've partnered with St. Edward's University in the past on screenings and discussions about Texas films.
Screen Door Films has just announced its 2010 Texas Cinema Series, and this time, they're teaming up with the Documentary Center at The University of Texas at Austin. The first two screenings are in February:

Monty Python's 1983 film "The Meaning of Life" effortlessly set the gold standard in sketch comedy movies -- which, for clarification, we'll define here as feature-length anthologies of stand-alone comic bits that don't serve to push along any overarching storyline. But while the Pythons' greatest film (gauntlet thrown down!) omitted a plot, their skits were still tied together by the most timeless of through lines: the trials of human life, presented in chapters like "The Miracle of Birth," "Middle Age" and "Death." Furthermore, 1971's "And Now For Something Completely Different," a re-filmed compilation of greatest hits from the first two pioneering seasons of "Monty Python's Flying Circus," is arguably the silver medalist of its kind, and good luck coming up with a third film that actually deserves the bronze.
The cold, hard truth is that sketch comedy movies are nearly impossible to pull off, and most are doomed to fail the test of time.

- How could you go wrong with character names such as Tommy Sweet, Jean Craddock and Bad Blake? Fox Searchlight has boarded a low budget indie pic which apparently works with a Tender Mercies-like plot and features a strong foursome of Jeff Bridges, Maggie Gyllenhall, Colin Farrell and Robert Duvall. Variety reports that Searchlight paid a low seven-figure minimum guarantee for worldwide rights to the indie drama, set for release in the spring. Perhaps a Sundance showcase is in the cards?Actor Scott Cooper made his directing debut with this feature, recently starred with Duvall in someone else's feature-length directorial debut. Aaron Schneider's Get Low will play out to buyers and the Torontonians in September. Based on the debut novel by Thomas Cobb, this centers on a down-on-his-luck, alcoholic country music singer named Bad Blake (Bridges) who is able to get his life and career back on track
