Every makeup effect has a story behind it, but even more fascinating are the stories behind the makeup effects artists themselves. For years, Heather Wixson has shared her passion for the horror genre as the Managing Editor on Daily Dead, and we couldn't be more thrilled by the official release of her new book, Monster Squad, a celebration of practical effects artists and their incredible creations that made so many of us believe in the magic of movies and gave us nightmare fuel forever.
Now available from BearManor Media, Monster Squad: Celebrating the Artists Behind Cinema's Most Memorable Creatures shines a light on the artists who have worked tirelessly in the shadows behind the camera to create the jaw-dropping creatures that have haunted big screens and warmed our hearts.

It’s been amazing to watch Don Mancini shepherd the entire Child’s Play franchise for nearly 30 years now, successfully navigating these films through various eras in modern horror, all while keeping the spirit of everyone’s favorite possessed killer doll Chucky very much alive and kicking.
This week, Cult of Chucky made its debut on various formats and platforms—Blu-ray, DVD, VOD, and the rated version is also now available on Netflix—which meant it was the perfect time to post our interview with Mancini here on Daily Dead. Here’s the catch though: what follows ended up being a very spoiler-filled interview at times, just because there’s so much that I’ve long enjoyed about this franchise, and wanted to dig into a lot of different topics with Chucky’s creator while I had the opportunity.
So, if you haven’t had the chance to see Cult of Chucky just yet,...

Substitute teaching can be scary on its own terms, but when the faculty and student body are susceptible to Lovecraftian horrors that threaten the Earth's very existence, it can be downright horrifying. That doesn't mean it's without humor, though, as evidenced by Dan Samiljan's new short film The Sub, which you can watch in its entirety right here on Daily Dead.
"Recently completing its festival circuit, The Sub was an official selection of the Nashville Film Fest, the Independent Film Fest of Boston and Scotland’s Dead by Dawn International Horror Film Fest.

Before tackling the Spider-Man trilogy, Master of Horror Sam Raimi gave the world his own unique brand of superhero storytelling with his 1990 neo-noir/horror/romance mash-up, Darkman, which paid homage to the larger-than-life characters and worlds of comic properties like Dick Tracy and Batman, as well as the tortured titular character in The Phantom of the Opera. A wildly hyperkinetic tale of revenge and loss, Darkman may not be Raimi’s most polished work, but I truly feel that given where he was at that time in his career, and the budget he had to play with, Darkman is easily one of Raimi’s most ambitious efforts (certainly right up there with the first two Evil Dead films).
One of my favorite aspects to Darkman (besides Larry Drake as the absolutely despicable crime boss Durant) has always been the film’s incredible effects, which were designed and created by Tony Gardner of Alterian,...

I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again: Seed of Chucky is the best Child’s Play movie by John Waters that he never directed. And to me, it’s probably the most underappreciated entry in the entire series, because if you take a moment to look at what Don Mancini did with this 2004 sequel, you’ll realize it’s a brilliant celebration of B-movies that also cleverly mixes up the Child’s Play franchise formula once again.
Seed of Chucky picks up after the events of Bride of Chucky, addressing the deaths of both Chucky (voiced by Brad Dourif) and Tiffany (voiced by Jennifer Tilly), and the birth of their unlikely progeny, who was rescued from the graveyard by a ventriloquist named Psychs (Keith-Lee Castle) and now works as a dummy named “Shitface” (voiced by Billy Boyd). I've got some extremely amusing behind-the-scenes photos from Sam Raimi's Army of Darkness featuring Bruce Campbell testing out some of the prosthetics that were made for him. According to Stan Winston School, these photos were taken at Tony Gardner's FX studio Alterian.
If you've seen Army of Darkness, then you're familiar with the scenes that these prosthetics were used in. This movie is such an awesome and hilarious classic, and it's really cool to see some behind-the-scenes photos like this featuring some of the FX work.

Hello, readers! Welcome back for another installment of one of our featured columns here at Daily Dead, Deadly Dialogue: A Conversation on Cinema, in which we catch up with notable talent who have worked in the horror and sci-fi genres—both in front of and behind the camera—to discuss the films that inspired them to become the artists they are today.
For this month’s discussion, Daily Dead spoke with Tony Gardner, legendary special effects artist and president of Alterian, Inc. With an already prolific career that began in the early 1980s, Gardner has consistently established himself as one of the premier talents in the industry, contributing to films like The Return of the Living Dead, Cocoon, Evil Dead II, Harry and the Hendersons, The Lost Boys, Gorillas in the Mist, Nightbreed, The Blob, Darkman, Army of Darkness, Hocus Pocus, Seed of Chucky (in which he has a pretty sweet cameo and death), 127 Hours,...

This is a horror franchise that never should have existed, and yet it is one of the few horror franchises without a single stinker in the bunch… that is, until we get to the 1987 made-for-tv spinoff movie Bates Motel and Gus Van Sant’s shot-for-shot remake in 1998. For our purposes, let’s just stick to the original series of Psycho films starring Anthony Perkins. Anything without the original Norman Bates just ain’t Psycho.

Reviews like this are tough, because a movie like Return of the Living Dead has been discussed-to-death on the internet for at least the last two decades. What can one possibly say that another hasn’t already? In addition to that, this is also the third Blu-ray release of the film I have seen. There was the disappointing MGM release in 2010, and then much better Second Sight release from the UK that dropped in 2012 and resurrected the original audio track containing the songs that were cut from the Us release. And here comes Scream Factory to topple them all. Sorry to spoil my review, but this is the definitive Blu-ray release of Return of the Living Dead. I have never seen this movie look so beautiful in all the years I have watched it. Couple with that, the fact that there are several audio options for you to choose from,...

It’s hard to believe that the same year George A. Romero released Day of the Dead, the ultra-gory, ultra-bleak conclusion of the trilogy he began with Night of the Living Dead in 1968, writer/director Dan O’Bannon was spinning Romero’s original classic into a totally new direction with The Return of the Living Dead. Whereas Romero’s film is dark and sober, Return is pure punk rock anarchy—a horror comedy that successfully manages to be equal parts horror and comedy while introducing one of the most significant elements into the zombie mythos since Romero first made them flesh-eaters 17 years earlier.
The film’s ingenious premise—which was “meta” before being meta was really a thing—is that the events of the original Night of the Living Dead really did take place and were covered up, with the zombies locked into airtight drums and left in the basement of a medical supply facility.

It’s hard to believe that a movie like Clown even got made in the first place; the project started out as a fake trailer several years ago, which caught the attention of Eli Roth (because his name was plastered all over it), who then brought the concept to Vertebra Films in hopes of getting the project off the ground for director Jon Watts.
Now, after all this time, Clown has finally arrived in the Us via Dimension Films, and while it could have used a little more trimming (especially in the film’s second act), by and large, Watts has crafted a genuinely creepy and disturbing body horror experience unlike anything I’ve ever seen before. I had an immensely good time watching Clown, making it well worth the wait.
Clown follows Kent (Andy Powers), a real estate agent doing his best to juggle a demanding career and his responsibilities to his family.

Over the last eight years, I’ve been truly lucky to be involved with some great press events, but the latest, in honor of Scouts Guide To The Zombie Apocalypse's recent bow on VOD platforms, easily takes the cake. Daily Dead was invited, along with several other members of the press, to take part in their zombie day where we toured the facilities at Alterian Inc., the studio behind the flesh-eaters who torment a group of scouts in Paramount’s horror comedy.
After our tour, we had the opportunity to be transformed into zombies ourselves and then had a chance to sit down with Tony Gardner, the mastermind behind Alterian who first got his start in the film industry while working on The Return of the Living Dead.
