Exclusive: Derry Girls and Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan, who last year also played one of the Barbies in Greta Gerwig’s box office smash Barbie, has booked the starring role in feature drama-thriller Love And War about a woman who must travel to Syria to find her abducted daughter.
Based on real events, the stirring story will chart Irish woman Sarah O’Meara’s struggle in September 2011 to rescue her six-year-old daughter who was abducted by her father, and smuggled to his native Syria, a country embroiled in the turmoil of civil war. As the story unfolds, it becomes clear that O’Meara’s greatest challenge will not be surviving the war but finding a way to outwit her ex-husband, former abuser, and greatest love.
The project is inspired by the book Stolen: Escape From Syria by Louise Monaghan with Yvonne Kinsella.

Being my fifth blog milestone it is fate that the comic gods have dealt me a good hand this month. Marvel Legacy #1 by Jason Aaron and a whole bunch of artists dropped last week. For those who read and for those who haven’t spoiler… Logan is back! Yes the original Marvel 616 Logan is back from the dead. There are very little details to work with at the moment. Immediate questions are what does his return mean for the current books I’m reviewing? Watch this space…
Old Man Logan #28
Writer: Ed Brisson | Artist: Mike Deodato Jr | Colourist: Frank Martin | Letters: Cory Petit
After the last issue and now this one this story arc is going places. It just adds weight to the claim not every story has to be six issues. There are still a few problems with it but now my enjoyment has been increased they feel very minor.

It’s that time of the month again to go through all comics laced with more than a hint of adamantium.
Generations: All New Wolverine/Wolverine
Writer: Tom Taylor | Artist: Ramon Rosanas | Colourist: Nolan Woodward | Letters: Cory Petit
When the ‘Generations’ one shots were announced in conjunction with the upcoming Legacy initiative by Marvel it was assumed a few currently dead heroes would be returning to the fold and this would be the jump on point. I don’t know if the premise for these one shots was set up elsewhere as picking up just one like I did is a little confusing to start with. Right away I can say without it feeling like a spoiler this has nothing to do with 616 Wolverine returning. It has to do with Laura going back in time to visit Wolverine in his prime and that’s where its confusing. But that doesn...

All New Wolverine #22
Writer: Tom Taylor | Artist: Leonard Kirk | Inks: Cory Hamscher | Colours: Michael Garland & Erick Arciniega | Letters: Joe Sabino
Laura continues her journey into the larger Marvel Universe this issue teaming with everyone’s favourite space adventurers The Guardians Of The Galaxy. This is a new story arc that follows directly on from the previous ‘Immune’ arc. However there is enough information given to easily pick this issue up and enjoy it without having read the previous three. I can’t stress enough how much of a fan of three issue story arcs I am. I think I have mentioned it in every review so far. With all the guests stars that have appeared in the series so far Taylor does a brilliant job of keeping voices unique.

It’s that time of the month again to go through all comics laced with more than a hint of adamantium. This month I will bring you up to speed on the previous three issues of Weapon X, All New Wolverine #20-#21 and then review the first issue from the new creative team on Old Man Logan #25. Before I get into the reviews I must apologise for not giving proper credits for the books I reviewed last month, so that will be rectified from here on in.
Weapon X #2-#4
Writer: Greg Pak | Artist: Greg Land/Ibraim Roberson | Inks: Jay Leisten | Colours: Frank D’Armata | Letters: Joe Caramagna
The second and third issues of this series have a certain feel of the writer following a paint by numbers. That being said I am enjoying the series thus far, but because of the characters involved and the concept of Weapon X always appeals to me.

Now that the X-Men are finally done battling the Inhumans, the focus is finally going to shift back to the place of mutants in the Marvel Universe in a big way. That comes as a result of “ResurrXion” this April, and Marvel has revealed today that each of the upcoming titles is going to get corner box art.
These have faded away in recent years despite being a staple of comic book covers for decades, but the publisher has taken a unique approach here by ditching the rectangular boxes by placing artwork of the titular heroes next to each title’s new X-icon (making them part of the logo in some cases). Artist Leonard Kirk and colorist Michael Garland are responsible for each of these and it will be interesting to see if other...

The Fiction #4
Written by Curt Pires
Illustrated by David Rubin
Colours by Michael Garland
Letters by Colin Bell
Published by Boom! Studios
The Fiction has been a very entertaining and enlightening ride, venturing beyond the nostalgic connections one has with their childhood into deeper emotions like regret and isolation. Each of the characters within The Fiction are given a respectable amount of treatment, gradually learning over the four issues about the way each of them are dealing with these vast emotions and the influence that the past still has on their lives. As the end breathes heavier upon the necks of Kassie, Max and Tyler, they must confront the evil that has embodied their one time friend Tsang to return to their reality alive.
Curt Pires dials down a bit of the sentimental nature of past issues and gets straight to bringing this series to a close. It is a...

Letters by Colin Bell
Published by Boom! Studios
The Fiction #3 opens with a melancholic moment in which Kassie is shown floating within an unknown dark space, speckled with a substance that reminds her of stars. Her monologue is reminiscent of when one looked into the sky as a kid, bewildered at how large the world felt with the multiple, barely visible sparkling lights. Kassie begins to diminish in size, reminded of a sky whose constellations merged memory and truth to try and tell us something; Curt Pires’ words poignantly capturing her state of mind. As Kassie has entered adulthood, she has realized her diminished role in the world around her and how small that makes her feel. With her childhood literally disappearing through her missing friend Tsang and separation of Max as shown in the last issue,...

One of the great wonders as a young kid is coming across a story, a book, for the first time and completely falling in love with it. It may be the characters, the elaborate setting, or the fantastical elements of said story that keeps you coming back for more. An attachment is born, a link to a certain story that grows over time, allowing you to get lost in another world time and time again. The Fiction #1 takes this concept of the power of imagination within fictional stories to the literal level. 5. The Empty Man (Boom!)
The Empty Man #1-6
Writer: Cullen Bunn
Artist: Vanessa R. Del Rey
Colorist: Michael Garland
Cullen Bunn is unique. If nothing else can be said about him, he is certainly unique. The Empty Man shows the full extent of Bunn’s ability. The series focuses on two detectives as they struggle to sort out the mystery surrounding a series of suspicious deaths and murders. The deaths are connected by the strange hallucinations experienced by the perpetrators, as well as their last words “The Empty Man made me do it”. The Empty Man is unpredictable because it follows so very few tropes. Nothing like this series has been seen before, and readers will be asking themselves the same question over and over: Who is the Empty Man? (Or “What the F*ck?”).
Bunn’s series is still in its infancy, so can be said without spoiling the twisting,...

Last week was moving week. It’s been a little hectic. It’s cool though, because if my plans go through the way I want them to, you’ll have more Comic Execution than you can handle in about a month. Here’s a hint: Fire & Stone.

The universe of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser is a rich and dark one and it is ripe to have writers come in and explore in a multitude of gruesome ways. That is the goal of Boom!’s new Hellraiser: Bestiary mini-series. This first issue of the six-part anthology is a bit of a mixed bag, as is the case with many anthologies.
The first story, “Symphony in Red”, written by Ben Meares and Mark Miller and art by Conor Nolan is a flawed, but a fun and twisted ride. Set in Hell and told from the point-of-few of the Female Cenobite, the story focuses on her watching, as Pinhead is acting more bloodthirsty than ever. His bloodlust is so insatiable that he is neglecting his other duties as Hell’s high priest. The strengths of this story lie in the grisly visuals as Pinhead tortures and tears apart hopeless sinners,...

Pulp Comics!! God, I can’t believe I’m turning into that guy. The sad thing is that I am the proud owner of a trenchcoat that looks exactly like it came out of a detective novel. No, not a creepy Hot Topic black leather duster, I’m talking the real thing, as vintage as you can get without dropping a few grand. Definitely holding on to it in case trenchcoats come back in style. Or the apocalypse happens. Whichever comes first.
Also, I just noticed that, for the second time, I’m reviewing all #3 issues. I think it’s a good omen.

Happy Independence Day!
For the rest of the world, Happy USA-Finally-Stopped-Whining Day!
I’m a bit bummed, though, about this week’s comics. You see, besides Big Trouble In Little China’s Eric Powell and The Shadow: Midnight In Moscow’s Howard Chaykin, none of the other artists or writers I’m reviewing in this week’s column are Americans. “But Chris,” you say, “Big Trouble In Little China’s artist, Brian Churilla, is from Portland, as is Nailbiter writer Joshua Williamson, and Portland is a city in the United States of America”
To which I say: have you ever actually been to Portland? Like, visited it, set foot inside it, verified with your own senses that it does indeed exist? Because if you ask me, I think Portland is actually a Canadian city Pretending to be an American city. Frankly, it’s the only explanation that makes any sense.

When we last left Jack Burton, he and his stalwart companion Egg Shen were ready to embark on a journey into the Hell of the Seven-Faced Widow to complete a task for an evil sorcerer in order to free their friend Wang Chi. To get to the Seven-Faced Widow, Jack, Egg, and Jack’s lovable pet demon Pete must travel along the mystical Midnight Road. Along the way, Egg Shen stops to ask for directions from an otherworldly roadhouse, while Jack has a meaningful conversation with an old man riding a giant turtle. Some pickled eggs are stolen, some natives scorned, and an old Crone tied to a tree questioned. All in a day’s work for Jack Burton.

I’m very excited about the recent growth of comic book creators in the Midwest and in the Saint Louis region in particular. Creators Jim Mahfood, Cullen Bunn and Matt Kindt have established themselves in the industry and have gained quite a following but still show up at local events every year and their diversity will hopefully show that anyone can make comics. And hopefully, next year, we’ll have two comic book conventions where aspiring creators can talk to and learn from both national and local creators. Personally, I think it’s a great time to be into comics, especially with the world of digital distribution making it easier to get your work out there independently.

Tonight. Midnight.
‘Hp Lovecraft’S From Beyond’ At The Hi-pointe Theatre. Late Nite Grindhouse.
I can’t even tell you how stoked I am for this. One reason you’ve got to see this movie is for a very geek reason; the title credit is done in one of the coolest design schemes I’ve ever seen. You just don’t know how cool it looks until you see it on screen. The other great thing about the movie is that it’s progressive for its genre, with a female protagonist who not only makes other horror movie heroines seem like idiots by comparison but is also not an ice queen either. I really can’t say enough about how much I love this flick. If you’re here in Saint Louis, go see it tonight or tomorrow night! If you’re not, why not join us at home and...

Fitzgibbon, Sitaru, Vicari, Huddles, Runarsson and van Geffen will be at Les Arcs this December.
Ireland’s Ian Fitzgibbon, Romania’s Adrian Sitaru, Iceland’s Runar Runarsson (pictured), Italy’s Daniele Vicari and America’s John Huddles are among the directors who will be presenting their new projects at the Les Arcs Co-production village this year.
The event, which runs Dec 14-17 within France’s alpine, Sundance-style Les Arcs European Film Festival (Dec 14-21), unveiled the production line-up on Thursday as well as the productions that will be presented in the Works in Progress section on Dec 15.
This year’s co-pro selection mixes upcoming productions from established independent filmmakers with a slew of projects from feted shorts directors who are embarking on their first features.

"The government's policy on energy in the United States is the most stupid, idiotic, inconsistent, crazy policy you could imagine," said Michael Garland, CEO of wind-powerhouse Pattern Energy Group. Garland spoke at the Renewable Energy Finance Forum yesterday in New York City, where chiefs of leading renewable energy companies discussed the challenges facing green industries. When the matter of Bp's oil spill arose, the panel talked about how things have changed--but not for the better.
"I'm just amazed. Some of us are old enough to remember 1968-69, when the Santa Barbara oil spill happened, and you think about President Nixon being there--the Epa was passed, the Clean Air act was passed, I think the Clean Water act was passed," Garland said. "It's just mind-boggling that right now we're struggling to pass an energy bill in Congress."
