Intro: It’s a story we’ve all heard before. A group of friends stray off the beaten path and end up having to fight for their lives. This has served as the set-up for many classic horror films and thrillers. Back in the early ‘90s, director Stephen Hopkins used it as the set-up for an action movie that has an awesome cast. Emilio Estevez, Cuba Gooding Jr., Jeremy Piven, and Stephen Dorff play the friends fighting to survive. Denis Leary is the leader of the criminal gang out for their blood. Unfortunately, not a lot of people went to see the movie when it was released… but they did make the soundtrack a hit. The movie is called Judgment Night, and it’s time for it to be Revisited.
Set-up: Judgment Night started out as a spec script written by Kevin Jarre, whose other credits include Rambo: First Blood Part 2,...

Just take a sneaky peak back on the movies we’ve covered so far on our Arnie Revisited series, and the Austrian Oak had already covered several genres in his rise from bodybuilder to Hollywood icon. Raw Deal and Commando were straight-up action movies, while his work as Conan was an epic mix of action and fantasy. You can even argue that The Terminator is a classic 80s slasher flick, and not simply the revolutionary sci-fi masterpiece it’s generally regarded as. However, he hadn’t managed to blend both horror and science fiction in any of his previous movies, in the way he did with the film we’re focusing on in today’s episode – Predator. It was such a huge success for both star and franchise that it not only helped to further cement Arnie as a Hollywood icon, but also created a franchise packed with sequels, a prequel,...

Things were going badly on Saturday Night Live‘s 1980-1981 season, even before producer Jean Doumanian realized than the January 10, 1981 episode was headed towards disaster.
The previous season had seen the departure of Lorne Michaels and the entire cast, including founders Gilda Radner, Jane Curtin, Garrett Morris, and Laraine Newman, as well as Bill Murray and Harry Shearer. Doumanian had tried to pitch her incoming group of comedians as the next generation for the hit series, but the performers quickly gained reputations as also-rans. Charlie Rocket was a less funny Chevy Chase, Gail Matthius an off-brand Jane Curtin, and so on.
But on that Jan. 10, 1981 episode, hosted by actor Ray Sharkey, things were going particularly badly. The skits went faster than anticipated and the show had five extra minutes to fill. So in an act of desperation, Doumanian followed the advice of writer Neil Levy and pushed 19-year-old featured player...

"I want to play a game." These words carry spine-chilling weight in the "Saw" franchise, always succeeded by a set of rules for an impossible death trap that needs to be evaded within a time limit. Over the course of 10 movies, and the 7-minute short that started it all, the "Saw" franchise has ballooned into an unforgettable phenomenon that consistently deepens the mythos surrounding John Kramer/Jigsaw (Tobin Bell), while the traps become more hellish and elaborate.
Call them splatter films, or twisted psychological horror with ample gore, the entries within the "Saw" franchise have always prided themselves on their twist endings, which often re-contextualize how their stories are perceived in the first place. James Wan's directorial feature debut, "Saw," kickstarted this convention without foreknowledge of its legacy by ending on a horrifyingly memorable beat that is still widely discussed and debated.

Director Kevin Greutert has weighed in on a potential Saw X sequel, but just to be clear, one has not been greenlit.
Saw X is undoubtedly one of this year’s biggest success stories. Not only is it the franchise’s only critically acclaimed instalment, it also revitalised a film series many thought was past its use-by date.
Now, inevitably, the talk is shifting towards whether or not there will be a sequel. We recently spoke to Greutert about Saw X and before we could even bring it up, he guessed we’d like to talk about the future of Saw.
“You’ll probably be asking about the future of the Saw series. I can go straight to that and say, we’d like to do one, but only if we feel very confident that it’s going to be just as good,” the director told us.
There we go.

John Kramer doesn’t like what he sees. After another disappointing doctor’s visit, the one-time villain of the Saw franchise, Jigsaw, pauses outside a patient’s room in order to have a drink of water. There he spies a custodian (Isan Beomhyun Lee) rifling through the belongings of that patient. The camera holds on Kramer’s eye staring at the custodian’s dirty deed before suddenly hard cutting to a shot of that same custodian, now in a trap. For this game, the custodian must turn a dial and break each of his “sticky” fingers, one by one, or have his eyeballs sucked out via an intensified version of the vacuum he uses.
As we soon learn, this first trap introduced in the weekend’s Saw X is actually a fake out; a figment of Kramer’s imagination as he thinks about the custodian’s actions. The scene ends...

Hello, Den of Geek readers. We would like to play a little game.
When James Wan and Leigh Whannell unleashed the first Saw in 2004, you might’ve thought the franchise was all about grisly murders and psychological nonsense. But if you still hold true to that opinion, then you have not been paying attention to the backstory and police procedural that accompanied the carnage. With each entry, the Saw franchise embraced flashbacks, flash-forwards, and flash-sideways, becoming more convoluted than that other 2000s phenomenon, Lost.
And now that Saw X is in theaters, you realize that you don’t understand the story at all. How can there be a 10th movie when John Kramer died in Saw III? Didn’t Jigsaw reboot the series in 2017? Did anyone actually see Spiral: From the Book of Saw?
Den of Geek readers, your attention to the bloody fun parts of Saw has left you unprepared.

With Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem drifting out of the top ten this week after earning a respectable $116.5 million at the domestic box office, it is time for a new family film to hit the market and that film is Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie. I will be honest, I don’t know much about Paw Patrol, is it a series for toddlers or do the stories skew a bit older? What I do know is that in August 2021 Paw Patrol: The Movie was released to a $13.1 million opening on its way to a $40.1 million domestic finish ($144.3 million worldwide). That number shows me that there is an audience for this franchise, and that was just a movie, it wasn’t mighty! That movie faced off against the second week of the hit Ryan Reynolds film Free Guy which won the weekend while the other new releases of the week: The Protege,...

Early in 1987, producers Larry Gordon and Joel Silver were on the hunt for an action hero. They were working on a rollercoaster tale about terrorists hijacking a high-rise tower in Los Angeles and the script called for a muscle-bound bruiser.
For contractual reasons, Frank Sinatra was top of the list for Die Hard. Ol’ Blue Eyes had first refusal as he’d been the star of 1968’s The Detective, which like Die Hard was based on author Roderick Thorp’s thriller novels.
When the 70-year-old crooner confirmed his terrorist-fighting days were long behind him, producers went straight to the most obvious candidate: Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Terminator, Commando and Predator star said no, preferring to try his hand at comedy alongside Danny DeVito in Twins. The rejections kept coming: Richard Gere, Burt Reynolds, Harrison Ford, Sylvester Stallone, Nick Nolte, Don Johnson and Mel Gibson all passed.
Way down the list was Bruce Willis.

How do you follow up an action classic? That had to be the question on director Renny Harlin’s mind when he signed up to direct Die Hard 2: Die Harder for 20th Century Fox and producers Joel Silver and Lawrence Gordon. 1988’s Die Hard was a smash hit beyond anyone’s expectations. Overnight, it turned Bruce Willis, who was then a TV star on Moonlighting, into the next action icon. One movie was all it took to make him one of the three biggest action stars of the era. Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, Bruce Willis – they were the guys, and Die Hard was the movie responsible for launching Willis into superstardom. But how would they follow it up?

There’s nothing as tempting as IP: Just ask the studio streaming titans of today, who are diving deep into their film catalogs to reboot and reimagine hit films from decades past.
Just one summer since slasher “I Know What You Did Last Summer” found new life as an Amazon Prime Video series, and it seems that all our favorite “old” movies are finding new life on streamers and networks alike.
CBS announced shortly after canning a slew of shows that a reboot of the 1994 Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis film “True Lies” will head to the network soon.
NBCUniversal also recently announced on May 12 a “re-framing” of Ben Stiller’s beloved 1994 burnout dramedy “Reality Bites,” which originally starred Winona Ryder and Ethan Hawke.
The series is set to debut on Peacock, along with a bevy of other Universal titles being transformed for the small screen.

Picture the scene: A camera pans over the charred remains of what was once a large section of dense rainforest in the Central American banana republic of Val Verde. Suddenly, the cloaked feet of a Predator come into view. The alien hunter plunges a barely visibly claw down into the ashen ground where flora and fauna once flourished. A second later, the severed arm of a Predator is pulled from the shattered earth. The semi-visible Predator makes a bee-line for his fallen comrade’s wrist-based computer.
A read-out appears on its screen, detailing everything that led to this point. The replay stops on the image of a human face: it’s a face audiences know all too well from a decade of action movies. Right here and right now though, they know him as Maj. Alan “Dutch” Schaefer. Without saying a word, the Predator knows this is its next target.

The direct-to-Hulu release of “Prey,” the action-thriller prequel to “Predator,” notched the most viewing hours ever on the Disney-owned streamer in its first three days — among all TV series and movies.
That would mean “Prey” had a bigger aggregate viewing-time total over three days than “The Kardashians,” which Hulu in April said was its biggest TV series premiere at the time.
Disney decided to forgo a theatrical release for 20th Century Studios’ “Prey,” which premiered Aug. 5 on on Hulu in the U.S., as well as on Disney’s Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star banner in all other territories.
Disney said “Prey” also was the most-watched film premiere on Star+ in Latin America and on Disney+ under the Star banner.
However, as is often the case with streaming platforms, Hulu and Disney are not releasing the specific number of hours “Prey” was viewed. Netflix, meanwhile,...

It’s good news all around for brand new Predator movie Prey, which has not only won over critics and franchise fans alike, but the film has also broken a new record over at Hulu.
We’ve learned today, “20th Century Studios’ highly acclaimed action-thriller Prey is the #1 premiere on Hulu to date, including all film and TV series debuts. Additionally, Prey is the most watched film premiere on Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ under the Star Banner in all other territories, based on hours watched in the first three days of its release.”
Meagan Navarro wrote in her 4-star review for Bloody Disgusting, “Prey surprises in how different yet similar it feels to the franchise’s origins. It feels right at home with the mythology of the Predator universe yet stretches the boundaries in tone and scale. Soaring spectacle meets intimate storytelling, delivering one of the most solid entries in the franchise yet.

Not all dreams are meant to come true.
Peacock’s straight-to-series order of “Field of Dreams” is no longer moving forward.
The 1989 baseball classic starring Kevin Costner was being adapted for the small and streaming screen by writer and executive producer Michael Schur. TheWrap has learned Universal Television is now talking to other interested buyers.
Schur’s “Field of Dreams” series was planned as a loose retelling of the feature film, which starred Costner as Ray Kinsella, a farmer in Iowa who, encouraged by an unknown, ethereal voice, builds a baseball diamond in the middle of his cornfield.

Well, this one's a bit of a headscratcher.
Peacock is no longer moving forward with the TV adaptation of the hit 1989 movie Field of Dreams.
Variety broke the news late Thursday.
The good news is that the series is not dead yet.
It is being shopped to other potential buyers, and given the success of the movie and the talent behind this project, there's a good chance it will land somewhere.
Mike Schur was to write and executive produce the project alongside Lawrence Gordon (who produced the original movie via his Gordon Co.), David Miner, and Morgan Sackett.
This is Schur's second series at Peacock, following in the footsteps of the successful Rutherford Falls, which recently launched its second season.
“Field of Dreams is an iconic Universal Film title from venerable producers Lawrence and Charles Gordon, that we could only have entrusted to Mike Schur,” said Erin Underhill, President, Universal Television...

A series adaptation of Field of Dreams has struck out at Peacock, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.
The Mike Schur-created drama based on the 1989 Kevin Costner-starring baseball-focused film was picked up straight to series in August 2021 but will not stream on the platform, according to a source with knowledge.
Universal Television, where Schur’s Fremulon shingle holds an overall deal, is in the process of talking to interested buyers.
Schur is the creator of NBC’s The Good Place, along with serving as the co-creator of Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Rutherford Falls. Among other credits, he is an executive producer on HBO Max’s Emmy-winning Hacks and Freevee’s upcoming Primo.
THR previously reported that the series was set to film entirely in Iowa, where the film took place, although it wasn’t expected to shoot at the specific sites used in the movie.

The “Field of Dreams” TV adaptation is no longer happening at Peacock, Variety has learned exclusively. Universal Television is currently shopping the project to other outlets.
The show adaptation of the 1989 movie was ordered straight-to-series at Peacock in August 2021. Michael Schur was set as writer and executive producer under Fremulon, with Lawrence Gordon of The Gordon Company also executive producing with David Miner of 3 Arts and Morgan Sackett. The field eventually draws in ghosts of legendary baseball players like “Shoeless” Joe Jackson (Liotta).
The film was based on W. P. Kinsella’s 1982 novel “Shoeless Joe.
