Exclusive: Carla Gugino (The Fall of the House of Usher) is in talks for one of four female leads in Night Electricity, an indie from her longtime collaborator Sebastian Gutierrez (Jett).
Pic’s plot is under wraps, though it’s been described as a psychological drama with thriller elements. David Lancaster is producing, with Gutierrez set direct from his own script.
Gugino recently landed a Critics Choice Award nomination for her turn as multiple characters in The Fall of the House of Usher, the acclaimed Netflix series from Mike Flanagan, with whom she’s collaborated on The Haunting of Hill House, The Haunting of Bly Manor, the Stephen King adaptation Gerald’s Game and other projects. Currently, she can be seen starring on The Girls on the Bus, a political drama series that premiered on Max last month, having also been seen of late in Zelda Williams’ horror comedy Lisa Frankenstein for Focus Features.

Carla Gugino is opening up about her role in Spy Kids.
The 52-year-old actress played Ingrid Cortez, the mother of Carmen (Alexa PenaVega) and Juni (Daryl Sabara) in the 2001 film. She reprised her role in the two sequels, which released in 2002 and 2003. At the time of her casting, she was 27.
During a conversation with Buzzfeed, Carla reflected on playing a mother of school-aged children at that point in her life.

“It is so funny because I was 27,” she said. “It was a really beautiful kind of double-edged sword because I love that movie so much. And the whole experience was incredible, and the movies continue.”
The Sucker Punch star added, “I love Ingrid Cortez. But it was funny because I was 10 years, at least, too young for the role because I was a spy for 10 years and then somehow had children who were like...

Carla Gugino is amazing. From her early days co-starring with Pauly Shore in Son-In-Law to indies with her partner Sebastian Gutierrez, including Electra Luxx and Women in Trouble, Gugino has shirked the traditional path many Hollywood actresses have taken. The result is a career full of unique work on the big screen and small including work with filmmakers like Robert Rodriguez, Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game), Zack Snyder, Ridley Scott (American Gangster), and more. Her series work with Mike Flanagan has included an array of roles in The Haunting of Hill House and Bly Manor, as well as her recent turn in The Fall of the House of Usher, which garnered Gugino her first Critics Choice nomination for Best Actress in a Limited Series or Movie Made for Television.

One of the best feelings in the world is discovering a series or a movie that you didn’t know about and realizing how distinct it is from anything else out there. Since working at JoBlo.com, I have been lucky enough to come across several series that I enjoyed and got to tell you about them. Sometimes, I am lucky enough to talk to the talent involved about the project and how it came to be. Such is the case with the new Peacock series, Leopard Skin. After watching the excellent series Jett, creator/director Sebastian Gutierrez and star Carla Gugino were kind enough to let me know about their latest project, this half-hour crime series that debuted on Peacock recently (check out our review).
Leopard Skin can be categorized as a heist series, a thriller, a drama, or any number of labels but it thrives by not being locked down to one genre.

Plot: A criminal gang takes two women and their guests hostage when they seek shelter in a remote paradise, where secrets, betrayals and desires bubble to the surface as everyone awaits their fate.
Review: Never underestimate a well-crafted heist. A masterfully constructed plan, whether or not it goes awry, is always a sight to behold. Like a Rube-Goldberg Device or painstakingly arranged rows of dominoes, I am a sucker for a good heist story. Over the years, film and television have played home to stellar examples of this but many are focused on trying to one-up what came before rather than revel in the story itself. Sebastian Gutierrez’s latest project, the Peacock original series Leopard Skin, is a prime example of the pulpy fun you can get out of a heist and its aftermath by pitting a group of characters opposite one another with only the prospect of survival driving them.

At a time when so many crime thrillers tend toward the dark, gritty and prestige-minded, Peacock’s Leopard Skin stands out for being none of those things. While its setup sounds typical enough for the genre — a botched heist, terrified hostages, secrets and standoffs and betrayals — its execution proves to be anything but.
Created, written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez (Jett), this series dances backward and forward in time, taking leisurely detours down semi-random rabbit holes and flights of fancy. It rarely misses an opportunity to admire the beauty of the (frequently unclothed) female form, or to plug into the crackling tension, amorous or otherwise, coursing between its characters. It’s ostensibly a drama, but one studded with oddball jokes.

There is more beneath the surface of Leopard Skin. This a fact that drew Carla Gugino to the upcoming new Peacock series from Sebastian Gutierrez. The two last worked together on the short-lived Jett. Here the Haunting of Hill House star plays Alba, a documentarian who along with Batista “Batty” (Gaite Jansen), is paid an unexpected visit by a band of criminals. Fleeing a diamond heist gone wrong, they take the women as hostages and use the beachside estate as their safe refuge. Things continue to go awry when dinner guests, Max (Philip Winchester), Maru (Amelia Eve), and the estate’s former housekeeper, Inocencia (Ana de la Reguera) appear. Layers of this story are peeled back from flashbacks to the present day. Secrets are uncovered and questions are answered (Jeffrey Dean Morgan!) for everyone involved right up until the last of the eight episodes. We caught up with Gugino about...

TV audiences best know actress Carla Gugino for her recent work with Mike Flanagan on Netflix. But Gugino also has a long-time working relationship with another director, Sebastian Gutierrez. In fact, she stars in several of his films, including his 1998 debut “Judas Kiss” and his latest, 2018’s “Elizabeth Harvest.” She also headlines Guiterrez’s 2019 Cinemax crime-comedy series “Jett,” about a world-class ex-thief who slowly regresses back into a life of crime.

Exclusive: C.J. Cooke’s supernatural family novel The Lighthouse Witches is set to be adapted into a television series after Studiocanal and The Picture Company landed the rights to the book.
The two companies closed the rights to the book and are currently packaging the series.
Published last year by Penguin Random House, the book follows young mother Liv and her three daughters who arrive on a mysterious Scottish island to run a decrepit lighthouse.
When single mother Liv is commissioned to paint a mural in a 100-year-old lighthouse on a remote Scottish island, it’s an opportunity to start over with her three daughters–Luna, Sapphire, and Clover. When two of her daughters go missing, she’s frantic. She learns that the cave beneath the lighthouse was once a prison for women accused of witchcraft. The locals warn her about wildlings, supernatural beings who mimic human children, created by witches for revenge.

Exclusive: Studiocanal and The Picture Company have entered into a new multi-year pact with the aim to make two-three films a year along with an infiltration into TV by Picture Company Co-Founders Andrew Rona & Alex Heineman.
The producers combined have made some of Studiocanal’s most successful films including the Liam Neeson thriller vehicles Unknown, Non-Stop and The Commuter, and they just released the Netflix action breakout Gunpowder Milkshake,. The films were all mid-level budget actioners that became profitable global hits for the studio. They’ll keep making those films for the Canal Plus library and Studiocanal’s streaming service output deals, but under the new deal, Rona and Heineman will lean into European theatrical co-productions and television for global audiences.

[Editor’s note: This article contains spoilers for “Jett” Season 1, including the ending.]
One of the joys of “Jett” is watching its title character think five steps ahead of anyone else in the room. Even in conversation, the audience can see her look past whoever she’s speaking to, plotting out all her possible moves.
So it’s a bit surprising when “Jett” ends its first season with Carla Gugino looking directly at the camera, as Jett wordlessly works through how to deal with the recent kidnapping of her daughter. For writer/director Sebastian Gutierrez, that last look — echoing the final moments of the show’s first episode — was the only way he wanted the nine-episode season to draw to a close.
“Jett is nothing if not practical. And tactical. It’s always interesting to have someone who is so good at planning contingencies and potential scenarios be put in situations where at some point, that will all go out the window,” Gutierrez said via email.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question: If you could pick one show – old or current – that you could champion/discuss more, but haven’t for whatever reason, what would it be? Why?
Ben Travers (@BenTTravers), IndieWire
Tuesday’s Emmy nominations make the answer much simpler than I would’ve hoped: “Better Things.” Pamela Adlon’s excellent FX comedy is made with such a potent combination of artistry and heart. Each piece is carefully crafted, from Adlon’s sweeping direction to the intimate vignette storytelling to the sparkling soundtrack to each individual performance and more. There are so many layers here, sliding in so smoothly one on top of the other, you don’t realize just how rich the personalities, story arcs, and overall experience is until you spend time with the series. While never a ratings juggernaut,...

Daisy “Jett” Kowalski (Carla Gugino) is someone whose face people remember. A silent, meticulous thief who can translate those skills into something more outwardly elegant when necessary, Jett stumbles across multiple past associates along her way to getting out of a life of crime for good. But by necessity, “Jett” is more than just its title character. Watching the new Cinemax series, written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez, is watching Jett wind through a thinly disguised world of scumbags, well-intentioned thieves, and people caught in between both camps. It’s filled with characters and situations we’ve seen before, but her journey makes that familiar trip worth it.
Despite her criminal prowess, Jett isn’t infallible. Gutierrez wisely stays away from making his central character an impervious angel of vengeance, even if there are some sequences that do tend in that direction. The most compelling moments of the series find...

If Cinemax’s new crime thriller “Jett” reminds you of a certain Quentin Tarantino film, you’re not alone.

And Sebastian Gutierrez, who created the series, explained the similarities for us even further.

Carla Gugino’s first job as a TV series regular was playing Michael J. Fox’s reporter girlfriend Ashley on Spin City in 1996. It was a big break that instead broke bad: The show’s creators quickly realized Ashley was a distraction from the funnier workplace scenes, and Gugino was let go after a dozen episodes. So thorough was her erasure from the series that an Ashley subplot was removed from a rerun that aired not long after Gugino’s last episode, replaced by previously-cut footage featuring other characters who were still on the show.

“This is like no character I’ve ever played,” Carla Gugino told Variety on the red carpet at the premiere of Cinemax’s “Jett” on Tuesday night. “I think television is filled with great roles for women, which is such a godsend these days. But the anti-hero — there’s still a double standard there.”
In the new series, Gugino stars as Daisy “Jett” Kowalski, a world-class thief fresh out of prison and returning to the game for one final heist. At the intimate premiere, held at New York’s Roxy Hotel, Gugino explained what makes the crime drama stand out and how its female-driven perspective aims to reclaim the genre — and the dated Hollywood archetype of the femme fatale — for a new era in American television.

As much as I love big budget sci-fi movies, there’s some great, much smaller budgeted, movies in this genre. I’ve always found that the best independent sci-fi movies are ones that come up with brilliant, creative and original ideas that work with very little money… And Elizabeth Harvest fits into this category nicely.
But don’t be thinking that this looks awful. As is proven again and again with indie movies, there is no excuse for them to look bad and Elizabeth Harvest looks like it has a much higher budget than it actually does. The camera work and cinematography are as good as, if not better, than some of the top sci-fi movies of the year.
Like the best sci-fi, Elizabeth Harvest has a complicated story that is made pretty...

One of the many releases just out now from Scream Factory is the 2018 film Elizabeth Harvest, from Sebastian Gutierrez. It stars Abbey Lee (The Neon Demon), Ciarán Hinds (Game of Thrones), and Carla Gugino (Gerald's Game). The key cast is joined by Matthew Beard (The Imitation Game) and Dylan Baker (Happiness). You can read Martin's review here. Essentially, the new, mostly one-location horror/thriller film Elizabeth Harvest is a re-telling of the classic folklore/warped fairy tale of Bluebeard, who had a nasty habit of killing all of his young, beautiful wives because they entered a forbidden room while he was traveling. The biggest difference is that Elizabeth Harvest veers into Black Mirror territory, which I can say without giving anything away. I did, however, see the main twist coming, but for me,...

Connie Britton and Carla Gugino have been best friends for 25 years. Still, their recent conversation with The Hollywood Reporter was the first time in a while that the two were able to carve out a catch-up session amid busy production schedules. "Getting 45 minutes on the phone together is the biggest luxury!" says Gugino, 47, whose Netflix series The Haunting of Hill House debuted Oct. 12 (she's now wrapping her next project, as star and executive producer of Cinemax drama Jett, written and directed by her longtime offscreen partner and creative collaborator, Sebastian Gutierrez). The 51-year-old Britton, a single mom ...

Elizabeth Harvest, a film from Venezuelan filmmaker Sebastian Gutierrez (Hotel Noir), is gearing up for a home entertainment release. LevelFilm will handle this indie horror film's Digital launch, while Shout Factory delivers the DVD and Blu-ray. Already having premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, Elizabeth Harvest offers mystery as one woman (Abbey Lee) explores her new home. Somewhat reminiscent of Alex Garland's Ex Machina (2015), the film's central character questions her husband's (Ciarán Hinds) work. More release details, on Elizabeth Harvest, are hosted here. The trailer offers forbidden fruit. Elizabeth is told not to enter one room, in her modern home. Curious, Elizabeth investigates the chamber, once her husband leaves. But, what is inside? An early review, at Cultured Vultures claims the film is unpredictable. Events do not play out as one might expect: "Sebastian Gutierrez... leads you one way then changes direction on a dime." Reviewer Michael Glover.

Brightly lit as though a fantasy beyond Elizabeth’s (Abbey Lee) wildest dreams, we meet her and new husband Henry (Ciarán Hinds) as they drive towards the rest of their lives. She basks in the luck she believes she possesses to find a man of his intelligence and wealth even if she’s quizzical to his having chosen to marry someone as “simple” as she by comparison. But regardless of these nagging insecurities, Elizabeth does seem legitimately happy. The age difference between them is a non-starter and the smiles both share are genuine and immovable. Yet something does seem off. Their big mansion’s doors have fingerprint locks, the hired help (Carla Gugino’s Claire and Matthew Beard’s Oliver) act coldly expectant, and Henry demands one room to never be opened.

Ever get the feeling that you were created by a mad scientist? Elizabeth sure does. Nothing is what it seems in Sebastian Gutierrez's Elizabeth Harvest. Also, check out a few photos from the film before it's released theatrically on August 10th from IFC Films.
Written and directed by Sebastian Gutierrez, Elizabeth Harvest stars Abbey Lee, Carla Gugino, Ciaran Hinds, Matthew Beard, and Dylan Baker. On August 10th, IFC Films will release Elizabeth Harvest at the IFC Center in New York and the Arena CineLounge Sunset theater in Los Angeles, in addition to VOD platforms.
Synopsis: "Nothing is as it seems in this brain-bending plunge into our darkest desires. Elizabeth (Abbey Lee), a beautiful young newlywed, arrives at the palatial estate of her brilliant scientist husband Henry (Ciarán Hinds). Ensconced in modernist luxury with an obedient—if slightly unsettling—house staff (Carla Gugino & Matthew Beard), she has seemingly everything she could want.

What exactly is going on in writer/director Sebastian Gutierrez's latest film Elizabeth Harvest is not fully apparent from the trailer but there are some clues that suggest this movie could have something in common with Ex Machina. Or maybe it's about cloning. Either way, it's shaping up to be a great looking thriller.
Here's what we do know: Abbey Lee (Mad Max: Fury Road) stars as Elizabeth, a young mail-order-bride of Henry, a brilliant scientist played by Cirian Hinds. He takes her home to a secluded house where the house staff, played by Carla Gugino and Matthew Beard, treat her with utmost respect but Elizabeth can't shake the feeling that something is just a bit off and when she enters the one room in the house her husband tells her is off limits, things get...

"Sometimes it feels like my mind is just one question after another." IFC Films has released the chilling official trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Elizabeth Harvest, which first premiered at the SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. The film is the latest from Venezuelan filmmaker Sebastian Gutierrez and is about a woman who is about to get married to a brilliant scientist, until she finally opens the locked door in his home and discovers what's behind it. They don't reveal much in this trailer, but it seems to be a mix of body horror and psychological horror. "Elizabeth Harvest casts a spell of creeping Gothic menace as it unravels a disturbing tale of identity, obsession, and twisted love." Abbey Lee stars with Ciarán Hinds, Dylan Baker, Carla Gugino, & Matthew Beard. This looks very unsettling. Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul’s Giancarlo Esposito is set for a lead role opposite star Carla Gugino in Cinemax’s straight-to-series drama Jett, from Gothika scribe Sebastian Gutierrez. Also cast as series regulars are Elena Anaya, Michael Aronov, Gaite Jansen, Chris Backus, Gil Bellows and Violet McGraw. Jodie Turner-Smith, Gentry White, Lucy Walters and Mustafa Shakir are set for recurring roles.
Esposito, who has a one-year deal on Jett, is coming off a two-season series regular turn on Better Call Saul, reprising his popular Breaking Bad character of Gustavo “Gus” Fring. That includes Season 3 and the upcoming fourth season, debuting Aug. 9, which already has been shot. I hear that while Esposito has has no deal in place beyond that, he could return to the AMC series should it get renewed for a fifth season, with the production schedule of Jett allowing for that.
