German studio Constantin Film has greenlit The Canoe of Manitou, a sequel to Manitou’s Shoe, one of the most successful German-language movies ever. Michael ‘Bully’ Herbig returns to write, star and direct.
Having made his name in comedy sketch show Bullyparade, comedian and actor Herbig made Manitou’s Shoe in 2001. The comedy Western was a parody of the Winnetou Westerns of the 1960s. It was a huge hit, attracting almost 12 million moviegoers.
Christian Tramitz and Rick Kavanian are collaborating with Herbig on the screenplay and all three will reprise their roles from the first movie. Filming gets underway this year and the picture will hit theaters in 2025.
German broadcaster Rtl is on board and has snagged the TV rights.

Variety has been given access to the international trailer (below) for “A Thousand Lines,” by one of Germany’s most successful directors, Michael Bully Herbig (“Manitou’s Shoe”), and starring two of its leading actors, Elyas M’Barek (“Fuck You Göhte”) and Jonas Nay (“Deutschland 83”). The film opened via Warner Bros. across German-speaking Europe two weeks ago. Beta Cinema is presenting it to buyers at AFM.
“A Thousand Lines” – a blend of satire, drama and comedy – is written by Hermann Florin, inspired by Juan Moreno’s “Tausend Zeilen Lüge.” It is the fictional adaptation of one of Germany’s biggest media scandals. The story centers on freelance journalist Juan Romero, played by M’Barek, who encounters inconsistencies in a cover story by award-winning reporter Lars Bogenius, played by Nay.

An Air Affair: Herbig Revisits Gdr Getaway in Strait-laced Thriller
German director Michael Herbig, best known for his comedic films in his native country, makes his first international splash with period thriller Balloon, a 2018 title at last landing stateside two years after its premiere. Based on the true story of two East German families who flee to the West via a hot air balloon, Herbig is reclaiming a national escapade previously filmed by Delbert Mann in 1982’s Night Crossing starring Beau Bridges and John Hurt. While Herbig doesn’t employ any surprising or lavish stylization to a rather straightforward rendering of the communist stranglehold on East Berlin, it’s an often taut and efficiently paced thriller intent on maximizing its potential, even if that means employing cliché to heighten suspense.…...

‘Terminator: Dark Fate.’
The latest iterations of Maleficent, Godzilla, Men in Black, The Angry Birds and Rambo flopped or under-performed in cinemas this year and Terminator: Dark Fate is the latest victim of moviegoers’ sequel fatigue.
It might be an exaggeration to say the sixth edition of the franchise self-destructed but the opening figures in Australia, the Us and 38 other markets last weekend weren’t pretty.
James Cameron’s name in the credits as one of the five “story by” writers and the novelty of seeing Arnold Schwarzenegger and Linda Hamilton together on screen for the first time since 1991’s Terminator 2: Judgment Day counted for very little.
Speaking of sequels no one wanted or asked for, Roadshow’s 47 Meters Down: Uncaged sank without trace, mirroring its Us fate.
Meanwhile Transmission Films launched writer-director Paul Downs Colaizzo’s Brittany Runs a Marathon on 20 screens three weeks before the dramedy starts streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Haugesund, Norway — Celine Sciamma’s intellectually dexterous, bittersweet love tale “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” has claimed another heart, taking home The Norwegian Film-Critics’ Prize at the Haugesund Film Festival’s closing night on Thursday.
The festival, which runs over August 17-23, capped its 47th edition with a screening of André Løyning and Kristian Landmark’s documentary
Sciamma’s revisionist romance won the screenplay prize at the Cannes Film Festival in May and will next head to Toronto, where it will screen as a Special Presentation.
“With elegance, sophistication and courage, the film explores how love and vitality can – at least momentarily – throw off the shackles of an oppressive social order. Exquisite acting performances and cinematography, combined with a soupcon of mythological symbolism, add up to a work of serious artistic merit,” noted the jury members in their verdict.
The Eurimages Lab Award went to director Guro Bruusgaard’s “Him.

Michael Herbig’s overwrought drama sucks the thrills out of this story of two families fleeing communist East Germany
You could probably choose a less conspicuous method of defecting than floating across the border in what looks like a giant glowing lightbulb. Yet a spectacular nocturnal breakout from communist East Germany by hot-air balloon is exactly what two families did in September 1979 – the basis of this glossy mainstream thriller released in Germany for last year’s reunification anniversary. Sadly, director Michael Bully Herbig – a well-known German comedy star – does them no favours with a frantic shooting style that somehow manages to render this terrifying endeavour both bombastic and trivial.
Friedrich Mücke and Karoline Schuch play the Strezlks, a disaffected electrician and his wife who, desiring an unfettered future for their two sons, decide to Montgolfier it out of the Gdr. When a northerly wind rears up, they break out the...

“Traumfabrik” marks the return of one of Germany’s most successful producers back onto the film stage in more ways than one.
A period-piece love letter to East Germany’s famed Defa film studios, now known as Studio Babelsberg, “Traumfabrik” is a romantic drama set in 1961 that follows a young studio extra’s ambitious efforts to reunite with the French girl he loves after being separated by the construction of the Berlin Wall.
It’s also the name of a new Studio Babelsberg shingle headed by veteran producer Tom Zickler and Christoph Fisser, Studio Babelsberg vice president and COO.
Zickler launched the joint venture in 2017 after nearly 20 years of working with actor-director Til Schweiger on some of Germany’s most successful films of the past two decades. Overseeing production at Barefoot Films and Mr. Brown Entertainment, Zickler produced such hits as 1997’s “Knockin’ on Heaven’s Door”; 2010’s “Friendship!” and 2014’s “Head Full of Honey.

German films have continued to perform strongly at the box office this year despite record high temperatures over the summer, usually a death knell for local cinemas, and not to mention World Cup soccer, which kept many potential moviegoers at home or in sports bars across the country.
Local pics have benefitted from a strong mix of comedy, children’s fare and drama. German productions accounted for some 11.3 million admissions in the first half of the year, compared with 10.6 million in the first six months of 2017, resulting in a 22.4% market share, up from 18.2%.

Despite its selection as Germany’s entry for the Oscars and a glitzy premiere at the Venice Film Festival, Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck’s “Never Look Away” is struggling to get viewers to look at it on home ground.
Henckel von Donnersmarck won an Oscar in 2007 for his freshman feature outing, the critically acclaimed East German drama “The Lives of Others.” He went on to make 2010’s “The Tourist” with Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp. “Never Look Away,” his highly anticipated third film, follows a young painter through three turbulent eras of German history.
The film boasts a strong cast led by Tom Schilling (“Oh Boy”) and Sebastian Koch (“The Lives of Others”) and a reported budget of around $20 million – high for a German film and evident in its lavish production values. Of all the genres the hardest one by far to critique is comedy. With genres like drama, action, and suspense there is a stable of universality to them where we can recognize certain distinct qualities that make them great. When it comes to comedy the bottom line is typically—is it funny—which is where the subjectivity lays. What one person finds funny someone else may find mind-numbingly offensive. Just think there was an actual time and place when people thought Pauly Shore was a legit comedian. On the other hand there are certain uniform factors comedies need to be successful. When looking at a film like The Incredible Burt Wonderstone it is not hard to determine it...

New 'Incredible Burt Wonderstone' movie delivered great comedy and pretty good storyline. New Line Cinema (Warner Bros.) released their new comedy flick, "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone" into theaters this weekend. I just checked it out,and thought it was very entertaining and served up a better storyline than I thought it would. It stars: Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, Olivia Wilde, Alan Arkin, James Gandolfini, Jim Carrey, Jay Mohr, and Michael Bully Herbig. In the new flick ,characters Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) grew up to become a successful magic act in Las Vegas. However, their act starts to loose interest and ticket sales when the new, popular, street magician, Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), shows up on the scene with his new brand of shocking and dangerous magic that seems to captivate audiences beyond belief. In an effort to compete, Burt and Anton try to perform a...

Here's a little clip from Warner Bros' upcoming magic comedy, The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. The movie tells the comedic tale of rival Las Vegas magicians who are competing for a highly competitive gig. The clip features a fun scene between Steve Carell, Steve Buscemi, and Jim Carrey.
The movie was directed by Don Scardino (30 Rock) and scripted by Jonathan M. Goldstein and John Frances Daley (Horrible Bosses). It also stars Olivia Wilde, Alan Arkin, James Gandolfini, Jay Mohr, and Michael Bully Herbig.
The comedy will magically appear in theaters on March 15th, 2013! I haven't heard the best things about this movie, but I'm still looking forward to seeing it.

1.) Angelina Jolie is in negotiations to direct Unbroken, the story of Olympian-turned-wwii Pow Louis Zamperini, for Universal Pictures. Jolie made her directorial debut with 2011's largely unseen Bosnian war romance In the Land of Blood and Honey. Universal has been developing a film on Zamperini's life for nearly 55 years, with William Nicholson (Gladiator, Les Miserables) delivering the latest draft of the script based on Seabiscuit author Laura Hillenbrand's 2010 book. Zamperini was a track prodigy who ran in the 1936 Olympics, but missed his big chance at glory when the 1940 Olympics were cancelled because of WWII. He then joined the U.S. Air Force, and he and two other crew mates survived on a raft in the hot sun for 47 days after his aircraft went down in the Pacific during a rescue mission. Things only got worse when they were captured by the Japanese Navy. "I read Laura Hillenbrand's brilliant book,...

The New York Times runs two must-reads this weekend. With Jacques Rivette's Céline and Julie Go Boating (1974) opening at Film Forum on Friday, Dennis Lim writes, "It's not just that the film holds up to repeat viewings; its very point is its seemingly infinite repeatability, its mysterious capacity to surprise both first-time viewers and those who know it as well as a magician reciting an incantation." He goes on to consider Céline within the context of Rivette's oeuvre and its lasting impact on filmmakers as diverse as Susan Seidelman and David Lynch.

Cologne, Germany -- Joseph Vilsmaier, the German director credited by many with reinvigorating the Heimatfilm genre, will receive a lifetime achievement award at the Bavarian Film Prize gala Jan. 15.
Vilsmaier was one of the most successful German filmmakers of the 1990s -- his period dramas "Autumn Milk," "Brother of Sleep" and "Comedian Harmonists" were local boxoffice hits.
The 70-year-old filmmaker returned to form with his last feature, the comedy "Brandner Kaspar" which featured local comedy star Michael Herbig as death incarnate. Vilsmaier's latest, the real-life mountain climbing drama "Nanga Parbat," bows Jan. 14 in Germany. It follows the story of brothers Reinhold and Gunther Messner who, in 1970, set off to scale the Nanga Parbat, the infamous "Killer Mountain" of the Himalayas.

By exploiting a traditionally soft release period on the foreign circuit, Disney dominated weekend action for the second consecutive round with four titles generating more than $31 million, including No. 1-ranked "Surrogates," which grossed $11.8 million from 2,251 screens in 25 territories.
Preliminary boxoffice estimates released on Sunday put Sony's "The Ugly Truth" in the weekend's top spot with estimated boxoffice of $12.1 million. However, that figure was lowered to $11.4 million once final numbers were counted on Monday, making the romantic comedy the foreign circuit's No. 3 title.
"Surrogates," a sci-fi thriller starring Bruce Willis, finished first in eight of the markets it played, with new territories contributing $5 million to the weekend total. It remained No. 1 in Russia for the second consecutive weekend ($2.2 million from 625 sites for a cume of $8.9 million), was the top-ranked U.S. title in Korea ($2.5 million from 250 sites) and opened in first place in Mexico ($870,697 from 343 spots).

"Up's" marathon foreign rollout suddenly turned into a sprint over the weekend as the Pixar/Disney animation title in 3D took the No. 1 spot for the first time this year with a boxoffice tally of $14.7 million from 3,151 locations in 23 countries.
Although in offshore release since May 29, "Up" had mostly ranked towards the middle of the pack each round thanks to its graduated foreign distribution pattern spaced over seven months in order to capitalize on school holidays and other local factors worldwide.
"Up's" total overseas take stands at nearly $200 million ($197.4 million) with a slew of key foreign markets -- including Italy, the U.K., all of Scandinavia, the Benelux countries, Turkey and Poland -- to play before its foreign run ends Dec. 5 in Japan. These territories are expected to add at least another 40% to 50% of the current take in foreign boxoffice.

Deathly premonitions ruled the overseas boxoffice during the weekend as "The Final Destination" in 3D emerged as the international circuit's No. 1 boxoffice title for the second consecutive round, extracting $17.7 million from 2,880 screens in 28 territories.
A 10-territory increase in markets played by the fourth title in New Line's horror-thriller franchise resulted in a $2.2 million boost from the previous weekend's gross. Even so, the weekend take for the tale of young people's lethal forebodings was the eighth lowest this year for a No. 1 title, indicating a generally slow post-summer session overseas.
Warner Bros. is handling "Destination" overseas along with independent distributors. A No. 1 Russian opening yielded $6.5 million from 600 sites for a mighty $10,833 per-screen average. Accumulated U.K. boxoffice over three rounds is $17.5 million.

Cologne, Germany -- Vicco von Bulow, the German comedy multihyphenate better known as Loriot, will receive a lifetime achievement Lola at next week's German Film Awards.
A 10-member jury, which included producers Bernd Eichinger and Gunter Rohrbach, director Michael Bully Herbig and actress Jasmin Tabatabai among other local film luminaries, picked Bulow for the honor.
The 85-year-old first rose to fame as a cartoonist in postwar Germany before crossing over into television and then film.
His gently sardonic humor won over mass audiences as well as critics. His film debut, "Odipussi" (1988), which he wrote, directed and starred in, won him several awards, including a German Film Prize. His follow-up, "Pappa Ante Portas," was a similar critical and commercial success.
"Even though he only directed two feature films, (von Bulow) became a role model for everyone around him and for those who came after him in the field," Rohrbach said. "He set the standard.
