Copycat movies have been a thing forever. You can look at the broader scope and consider that most slasher movies became copycat in one way or another. A supernatural killer, excessive gore and nudity, and even the high body counts. That style of horror movies could become a dime a dozen. Twin films are similar, but they are made at roughly the same time and actually trying to release first to beat the other to market so as to not be seen as an attempted clone of the other studios idea. Boiling it down even further, some copycats go beyond just the themes and even try to take direct elements from the previous movie that made money.

Science fiction writer Philip K. Dick wrote numerous novels and short stories that question the nature of reality and human perception by focusing on characters in capitalistic, dystopian futures. His 1968 novel, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" is one of those works — it follows a bounty hunter named Rick Deckard who is assigned to "retire" six androids who escaped to off-world colonies. Ridley Scott eventually adapted this novel for the big screen with 1982's "Blade Runner," which retained some of the book's themes despite veering away from much of the plot in Dick's original work.
The book-to-screen journey for "Electric Sheep" was a long one, laden with studio refusals and rotating scripts because the book's premise was either heavily altered or too ambitious to be realized on screen. Scott also wasn't the only filmmaker who tried to adapt the story — years before his efforts, a young Martin Scorsese was heavily interested in optioning Dick's novel.

Looks like another George R.R. Martin property may be coming to cable TV. Syfy network has greenlighted a pilot for the supernatural thriller Nightflyers. The show is based on the novella by Martin and a 1987 film. Deadline reports that the project is potentially getting a series pick up because the studio is in the process of setting up a writers room for the show. Writer Jeff Buhler (Jacob’s Ladder) wrote the adaptation of Nightflyers.
Deadline explains the plot of the show:
"...set in the future on the eve of Earth’s destruction. In the hope of making contact with alien life, eight maverick scientists and a powerful telepath embark on an expedition to the edge of our solar system aboard the Nightflyer, a ship with a small, tightknit crew and a reclusive captain. George R.R. Martin has a pretty hot brand right now. Game of Thrones has been absolutely killing it on HBO ever since its premiere back in 2011, and while one could chalk that up to the copious amounts of sex and violence, there’s no doubt that the series has its foundation in amazing characters and storytelling. Given the success of this series, as well as Martin’s experience in television as a writer and series executive producer, it was only a matter of time before some of his other properties got the small screen treatment.
TheWrap is reporting that Syfy is developing a supernatural thriller based on Martin’s novel Nightflyers (Which was adapted into a film back in 1987). In case you have no idea what the book is (which I’ll assume is most of you), the outlet describes it as follows:

Demon Seed (1977) was the latest in an ever growing subgenre of science fiction film: Technodoubt (okay, I just made that up). But as the world started to catch up with its imagination (Apple Computers was born in ’76), and technology raged forward like a silicon locomotive, Hollywood searched for ways to exploit mankind’s natural fear of progress. From the dangerously malfunctioning Hal in 2001 (1968), to the murderous androids of Westworld (’73), rich veins of cybernetic carnage were mined for maximum cinematic paranoia. Demon Seed upped the ante by downloading the menace right into the home.
Released in April by MGM, the film was not a commercial success by any means, but certainly drew attention from critics due to its unusual (and quite absurd) high concept story, a showcase performance from Julie Christie, and a piqued interest in director Donald Cammell. Regardless of the gateway, Demon Seed remains a unique genre treatise on dominance and loss.

Welcome back my ghoulish fiends! This week we are going to be addin’ a few special treats to our crazy cornucopia of dastardly delights; namely, I will be turning my evil eye upon a short film, a CD, and of course our usual nightmare nonsense of full-length films and interviews!
Silent Horror – Self Titled (Audio CD)
As you can probably surmise, your ol’ pal Daniel Xiii is a rather large aficionado of that wicked sub-genre of maniacal music known as horror-punk! Graveyard ghouls crooning pestulant platitudes to all manner of monsters and madmen has been infinitely entertaining to yours cruelly since the days when Glenn Danzig and his Misfits crawled from the pizza scented streets of loverly Lodi New Jersey.
Now, there’s been a ton of bands influenced by Glenny D’s Evil Elvis swagger, and as you can guess, some are much better than others; but every once...

For any horror fan who has longed to experience Kevin Connor’s darkly comedic tale of Farmer Vincent and his tasty fritters in high definition, adding Scream Factory’s recent Blu-ray release of Motel Hell to your collection is pretty much a no-brainer. And for the uninitiated, you may be surprised by how well this zany backwoods tale of murder and cannibalistic mayhem holds up almost 35 years since the film was first released.
Motel Hell transports us back to a simpler time when roadside motels were commonplace, young girls on vacation could go missing and no one would ever notice. Unsuspecting travelers would come from near and far to get their hands on some of Farmer Vincent’s (Rory Calhoun) delicious meat products, made from his own special (and quite sinister) blend of ingredients that he and his sister Ida (Nancy Parsons) create fresh each and every day for all their loyal customers.

Motel Hell is an odd film. It’s packaged as a horror-comedy hybrid, but in reality, it takes itself far more seriously than most movies within the same category. Though the film does have an oddball quality, it steers clear of satire, and never reduces itself to slapstick. Motel Hell was produced during a time where all studio horror output was expected to be dead-teen slasher flicks, and while the film has a slasher quality to it, it has a lot more going on for it than that. Another thing Motel Hell is good for, is forcing you to create a lot of the violence in your own mind, as much of the gorier death scenes happen off-screen in a clever sort of way. Much like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, you walk away from Motel Hell feeling like you just watched a gorier film than you actually did. What...

★★★☆☆ English director Kevin Connor's schlock comedy Motel Hell (1980) is perhaps best remembered for providing two of horror cinema's catchiest tag-lines - "Meat's meat, and a man's gotta eat" and "It takes all kinda critters to make Farmer Vincent's fritters". However these expressions uttered by the film's protagonist and his homicidal sister also sum-up the essence of a film which is as unsettling today as it was when first released over thirty years ago. Vincent Smith (Rory Calhoun) and his sister Ida (Nancy Parsons) run 'Motel Hello', one of the most hospitable roadside hostels in America's Deep South.
The Smiths are also famous for the spiced meat they make from livestock reared on their own land. People may not be so keen to stop by however if they knew the secret ingredient which goes into Farmer Vincent's succulent delicacies, and if they realised that by booking into the motel they'll...

I just finished watching the wonderful 1980 horror flick Motel Hell and it made me think. Now, I doubt this is the reaction the filmmakers were looking for when they made this witty little treat, and it’s definitely not the reaction I had when I saw it originally as a teenager. But as one ages and the body begins to break down, the mind begins to assert itself. So bear with me. Watching Motel Hell as a kid, I delighted in seeing former western star Rory Calhoun playing a murderous, cannibalistic farmer. But as an adult, I realized that this flick holds an interesting place in the history of horror movies: Motel Hell might well be the true last gasp of '70s horror.
