"Leprechaun" is one of those horror franchises that keeps on keepin' on. It's not very good, and yet, we, the movie-watching public, return to these movies again and again, even as they grow progressively more ridiculous. One recurring element in all of the "Leprechaun" movies is a sense of humor, particularly from the titular Leprechaun, played in the majority of the movies by Warwick Davis. Like Freddy Krueger in the "Nightmare on Elm Street" sequels, the Leprechaun is a jokester; he likes to quip when he's killing.
But as silly as the series has grown, there was a point in time when the original film was going to be much different. Specifically, it was going to be something darker and more horror-forward. Things changed, and a sense of humor prevailed. But imagine an alternate timeline when the first "Leprechaun" movie was a full-blown serious horror picture designed to scare the hell out of you.

"Leprechaun" isn't a very good movie, but it did spawn an entire horror franchise, so that has to count for something. In addition to starring Warwick Davis as the titular demonic figure, the first "Leprechaun" film is perhaps best known for starring a pre-"Friends" Jennifer Aniston, playing one of the unlucky humans who goes up against Davis' horror movie villain. It was Aniston's second film role — her first being an uncredited background performance in the infamous "E.T." knock-off "Mac and Me." "Leprechaun" arrived in 1993, and a year later, "Friends" would help make Aniston a star. But before that, she was just a working actor looking for her big break. Lots of actors get their start in horror movies, so there's surely no shame in Aniston facing off against a killer leprechaun.

The erratic Leprechaun franchise is not known for sticking with a single concept for too long. The namesake (originally played by Warwick Davis) has gone to L.A., Las Vegas, space, and the ‘hood (not once but twice). And after an eleven-year holiday since the Davis era ended, the character received a drastic makeover in a now-unmentionable reboot. The critical failure of said film would have implied it was time to pack away the green top hat and shillelagh, and say goodbye to the nefarious imp. Instead, the Leprechaun series tried its luck again.
The general consensus for the Leprechaun films was never positive, and the darker yet blander Leprechaun: Origins certainly did not sway opinions. Just because the 2014 installment took itself seriously did not mean viewers would. After all, creator Mark Jones conceived a gruesome horror-comedy back in the early nineties, and that format is what was expected of any future ventures.

The eight film Leprechaun horror franchise is about to get a ninth installment, with Lionsgate recently hiring director Felipe Vargas (Milk Teeth) to “reimagine” the franchise.
But what can we expect from this next installment in the long-running saga? Felipe Vargas sat down with Splattercast ahead of St. Patrick’s Day to tease the new movie.
Vargas tells the show, “I’m so honored to be on that project. It’s such a cool franchise. To me what makes the franchise so special is that it really is limitless. It doesn’t need to be grounded. It can just be gory, sexy, crazy.”
“We’re still figuring out that tone,” he continues. “And the balance between horror and comedy. I would love for it to be scary as hell and also hilarious. I think we’re going back to a lot of the roots of Leprechaun in a lot of different ways,...

You can always count on Syfy to program the Leprechaun movies for St. Patrick’s Day, and we’re happy to report that this year is no exception. Syfy will be airing an all-day Leprechaun Franchise Marathon for St. Patrick’s Day once again, taking place on Sunday, March 17!
The good news? They’re showing All 8 Movies throughout the day, including 2018’s Leprechaun Returns. The bad news? As always, the movies are playing out of order.
The Leprechaun franchise kicked off with Mark Jones’s original horror-comedy in 1993, which was followed by five Warwick Davis-starring sequels, a reboot, and later Leprechaun Returns in 2018. Even though Leprechaun Returns was a sequel to the original movie, Linden Porco took over the role of the title character, played by Dylan Postl for Leprechaun Origins.
Here’s the full schedule for this year’s marathon…

There’s just something inherently creepy about dolls, and filmmakers have had a lot of fun over the decades crafting horror stories around that creepiness. Audiences clearly love to see it, otherwise there wouldn’t be so many creepy / killer doll movies out there. Just last year, M3GAN was such a hit that a sequel was put on the fast track, while another killer doll (or killer teddy bear) movie, Imaginary, is in theatres now. So to celebrate this sub-genre, we decided to put together a list of some of the all-time best killer dolls. Not killer doll movies, but specific dolls. Here is our list of the Top 10 Killer Dolls!

By the time Rumpelstiltskin was in the works, the slasher model of yesteryear was replaced with something fresh but still familiar enough. Hence the many oddball slashers where the antagonist is neither human nor ordinary. From djinns to scarecrows, the decade saw horror turning to more fantastical inspirations. Mark Jones, whose career began in writing for cartoons and television, essentially kicked off the trend with Leprechaun. And had his first movie not been so successful, his next would have likely never happened.
After striking gold with Leprechaun in the early 1990s, Mark Jones looked to another magical icon for his second horror movie. Two specific on-screen depictions of Rumpelstiltskin influenced Jones’ own unique reimagining; he drew from Shaike Ophir and Billy Barty’s performances, respectively from the vintage anthology show Shirley Temple’s Storybook and an ‘87 movie directed by David Irving. Jones remembered Ophir’s take on the Brothers Grimm character to be particularly creepy.

Sue Bird and Diana Taurasi are taking their show to the NBA.
The two WNBA stalwarts will host their first NBA game together on ESPN, bringing back a programming concept that has proven popular during the network’s coverage of the NCAA women’s final four tournament. “The Bird & Taurasi Show,” seen six times over the course of 2022 and 2023, has gained notice for the duo’s rapport and rogue energy. The program will be produced in conjunction with Peyton Manning’s Omaha Productions, which is the backer of the so-called “Manning-cast” that airs alongside ESPN’s “Monday Night Football.”
The pair will call a noon game on Christmas between the Milwaukee Bucks and New York Knicks and can be seen on ESPN2 and ESPN+. Scheduled guests include Jason Sudeikis, Tyrese Haliburton and Breanna Stewart.

Halloween might be the next major holiday on the calendar but that doesn’t mean we can’t celebrate St. Patrick’s Day with a little luck o’ the Irish. Ahead of Halloween and to mark the occasion of the first Leprechaun movie’s 30th anniversary, director Mark Jones is giving his take not on the horror flick that launched an eight-movie (so far) franchise, but its sequels both good, bad and whatever Origins was going for.
Speaking with Comic Book Resources, director Mark Jones said he is a fan of most of the sequels, although there is one entry that stands out as notably bad. “I was a little bit involved in [Leprechaun 2]. I was a producer on [Leprechaun 2], but then I went off to do other stuff. I thought Leprechaun in the Hood was great. There’s a whole fan base there. Everyone but [Leprechaun: Origins], and all...

The 1980s were a junky era for film and television. Once the studios and networks figured out what kinds of formulas American audiences were keen on after Vietnam, Watergate, and the election of Ronald Reagan reshaped the country's psyche, they exploited them relentlessly. One particularly reliable genre of sorts was the gung-ho, men-on-a-mission actioner where outnumbered, yet armed-to-the-teeth heroes resourcefully defeated equally well-armed bad guys.
When these projects were made for the big screen, studios piled on the red meat. Scads of folks got shot, stabbed, and blown up, and the directors didn't skimp on the viscera. These were the hardest of the hard R-rated movies of the decade, and they made heaps of money.
At a network level, television was still cinema's less-appreciated little brother in the 1980s. Sitcoms were king, while hour-long dramas tended toward soapiness or murder-of-the-week mysteries. There were very fine shows that worked within these parameters,...

There have been eight films in the Leprechaun franchise to date, with 2018’s Leprechaun Returns most recently heading back to the original movie’s timeline in the wake of reboot Leprechaun Origins four years prior. A full Free Movie of the Day is posted on the JoBlo Horror Movies YouTube channel every other day during the week – but on Fridays things get even freakier and a little more fun. Get your weekend started the right way by indulging in Friday Fright Nights! Every Friday, we’ll be taking a look at another genre movie you can watch in its entirety, free of charge, either on the YouTube channel linked above or in the video embed here.
The Friday Fright Night feature we have for you this week is called An English Haunting – which doesn’t leave much question as to what sort of movie this might be. Of course it’s a haunted house movie. And this isn’t always a horror sub-genre that I get much enjoyment out of, because shots of creaky doors swinging open by themselves don’t do anything for me.

Leprechaun creator Mark Jones, the man who helped make Warwick Davis a household name in households that like rhyme-heavy horror comedies more than Star Wars or Willow, has just lodged a legal complaint centered on his latest project. Jones is accusing a supposed lawyer of ruining his plans for Vamprechaun, a movie that sounds like Jones invented it while staring, bleary-eyed, at his kids’ overly-sugared breakfast cereals:
(Images: General Mills)
Jones is accusing Lance Thompson—a man who secured funding and acted as the production attorney for his 2014 revenge thriller Scorned—of falsely representing himself as a lawyer, and torpedoing Vamprechaun’s chances of ever merrily jigging its way to unlife. The troubles apparently started during a car trip the two men took together, in which Jones explained the film’s premise. How did a low budget horror movie about a diminutive Irish monster spawn five sequels, a new reboot, and the career of Jennifer Aniston? EW tracks the deranged history of the Leprechaun franchise.
British actor Warwick Davis says he has “specific” fans—well-wishers who want to discuss just one of the several fantasy franchises in which he has appeared. “People talk about Star Wars, people talk about Harry Potter,” he explains, “and people talk about Leprechaun.”
Alert readers will have noticed that one of these franchises is not like the others. While Star Wars and Harry Potter have raked in billions of dollars,...

Just as quickly as Afflicted redefined the “found footage” horror subgenre, SX_Tape came along and proved there are still Plenty of opportunities for filmmakers to exploit first-person horror normalities. One day there’s a bright hope, the next there’s a disgusting reminder that for every original idea, someone else will rehash the past few years of duds for their own ill-conceived shitfest. I want to remain positive, happily accepting an advancement in “found footage” horror – but it takes a certain type of awful to make me hate a movie in which our lead, possessed character jumps up and down screaming “Let Me Suck Your Dick!” To think some inexperienced filmmaker could just waltz into stardom with such a – wait, this was directed by Bernard Rose of Candyman fame? Oh boy, where’s Tony Todd when you need him?
When has a sex tape ever gone wrong, am I right?...

During his appearance on Dread Central Live, Leprechaun franchise creator Mark Jones (Scorned) talked a bit about his next horror project, Vamprechaun, and now he wants You to help deliver the goods!
"I actually have a new horror franchise that I came up with, and it actually may involve Warwick Davis," Jones told co-hosts Staci Layne Wilson and Vanessa "Gore Whore" Gomez during the broadcast. "In it a vampire bites a Leprechaun, creating a Vamprechaun."
"So now you have this little vampire, completely different character, completely different prosthetics design... Being that he's little, he'll be biting your ankles instead of your neck because he can't reach it, and he gets all these women... It will be comedy-horror of course, and we're in talks now trying to put that together. I think it will be the next big franchise, and I think Warwick's fans would love it so if we make that happen,...

If I learned anything from Red Clover, it’s that Billy Zane and leprechaun movies don’t mix – yet I still gave Scored the good old college try. “But Matt, does that mean there are evil leprechauns in Scorned?!” No random commenter, even though a monster leprechaun might have presented Something interesting, but Scorned is written and directed by Leprechaun helmer Mark Jones – what could go wrong, right?! I know, I’m softening you up for the surprising fact that Scorned is quite possibly one of the most boring, uninspired, and poorly imagined thrillers of the year – and if you think I’ve already used the world “scorned” too many times, I dare you to drink every time Scorned references its own title – knowingly. Actually, I recommend you play that drinking game, because being blackout drunk may be the best way to watch Jones’ latest. Hell, the same rules might even help my own review.

Hell hath no fury like a you-know-who who has been you-know-what-ed in the new thriller Scorned, which is released on Blu-ray and DVD Tuesday. The film stars AnnaLynne McCord (90210) as a woman who discovers her boyfriend (Billy Zane) has been cheating on her with dramatic and — judging by the movie’s trailer — dog-in-microwave-featuring consequences.
Below, Scorned director Mark Jones (Leprechaun, Rumpelstiltskin) talks about the film — and the time he got punk’d by George Peppard.
Entertainment Weekly: Tell us about Scorned.
Mark Jones: Okay. Well, it’s basically Misery meets Fatal Attraction with young people.
I’m in!

Check out a pair of trailers for director Mark Jones’s thriller “Scorned”, starring the girl from that CW TV show, who plays a totally crazy chick, and the other girl from the Starz TV show, who pays her victim. Plus, Billy Zane of “Titanic” fame is in this one, too. The first trailer is for everyone, and features just a little bit of skin. The second trailer is labeled a Red Band, and featured just a little bit more skin, along with some violence, including the possibility of a dog frying in a microwave. Now that’s just cruel. Sadie (AnnaLynne McCord) and Kevin (Billy Zane) have decided to spend a romantic weekend together at his lake house. But when an unexpected – and unfortunate – text from her best friend Jennifer (Viva Bianca) to Kevin reveals a lurid love affair between the two, Sadie spirals into a hunger for revenge that is without mercy.

The former “90210” starlet stunned fellow beachgoers thanks to her skimpy yellow bikini and rock hard body as she rode her bicycle along the coastline.
