In 1968, The Beatles, the biggest band in the material world, went searching for lesser-known alternatives in the spiritual one. Directed by Ajoy Bose and co-directed by Pete Compton, The Beatles and India is more than just a travelog of the band’s famous trip to Rishikesh, India to study transcendental meditation under Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The documentary shows how Indian music helped refine the group’s sound and how the country embraced the band as cultural ambassadors with deep roots which continue to this day.
The Beatles impacted India almost as much as the country influenced them. The group was first introduced to Indian music while filming Help!, a comedy which spoofed a Kali cult as a comic book villain. The 1965 film featured Indian musicians in a restaurant scene, and the band noticed the instruments. George Harrison first used sitar on John Lennon’s “Norwegian Wood (This Bird Has Flown)” from the Rubber Soul album.

Bong Joon-ho’s “Parasite” predictably dominated the Asian Film Awards. The dark comedy, which won Cannes 2019 and four Oscars, added four further prizes on Wednesday, including best film and best screenplay.
The Afa event this year shifted from its previous base in Hong Kong and Macau to Busan. And it moved its dates from March to October to coincide with the Busan International Film Festival. But the coronavirus pandemic and ongoing travel restrictions meant that the 14th Afa ceremony was an online one.
“Parasite” also claimed prizes for Yang Yinmo’s editing and for Lee Ha-jun’s production design.
“Every member of ‘Parasite,’ no matter how big or small the role is, deserves to make a speech here with me because we made it together. I strongly believe that we will meet in person next year at the Asian Film Awards, shake hands, and enjoy talking with one another without masks.

ReviewThe film begins in October 2016 in Mumbai, a month before Pm Modi announced the demonetisation of high value currency notes. Sowmya RajendranSarita is like millions of Indian women who have to do it all – work at home and work in their office, with no time for rest or relaxation. Her husband, Sushant, sits around all day doing nothing, shamefaced about Sarita having to pick up his slack but thick-skinned enough to maintain the status quo. The drain in their kitchen is a point of conflict. It gurgles, it chokes, it spills out water into the kitchen... it’s a curse, until it’s not. Choked: Paisa Bolta Hai, directed by Anurag Kashyap and written by Nihit Bhave, is now streaming on Netflix. The film begins in October 2016 in Mumbai, a month before Pm Modi announced the demonetisation of high value currency notes. It’s an imaginative little story about imaginative little people.

In October 2016, Al Jazeera did a stunning piece on the hottest new scene in Mumbai town: underground rap. It looked very closely at “Indianizing Hip-hop” specifically through the eyes of one rapper Navid Shaikh or Naezy. Only 2 years on and this same theme is now a major Bollywood film Gully Boy. Directed by Zoya Akhtar and led by Ranveer Singh, this story tells not only of Naezy’s rise to the heights of this young movement but also compatriot Divine in a musical album subtitled “Apna Time Aayega”. Its music would not be complete or correct without inputs from Divine and Naezy themselves but also from a multitude of the stars of this form with Spitfire, Rishi Rich and Dub Sharma just to name a few also getting in on the act. To round the album with the necessary non-rap songs Karsh Kale, Ankur Tewari and Jasleen Royal also make major contributions.

Mumbai, Nov 30: "Music is your own experience, your own thoughts, your wisdom," American musician Charlie Parker once said. But that holds no meaning when you compose for films, feels Indian American musician Karsh Kale, the man behind the music for films like "Pyaar Impossible", "Karthik Calling Karthik" and "Chutney Popcorn".
A musician or a band loses out on identity while composing music for movies, he says.
"I think any time you are making music for a film, you are not making your own music any more. You are making music, which a director or a producer is asking you to make. Even if you put your stamp on it, it is someone.

Lyrically, Janina references the famous play, of the same title, by Samuel Beckett, on “Waiting for Godot,” over a haunting, ambient foundation, that later progresses into dub-step, then into a choir—yes, a choir, of 25 moving parts. The mix of experimental, quirky, electro-pop, on her debut single is just a taste of what to expect on her not-yet-titled, upcoming Ep, which drops later this year via Randy Jackson’s Friendship Collective label. “One day Randy Jackson [of American Idol fame] called,” Janina explains of their musical union. “He said ‘You’re weird! I like it! I think you’re going to make great music!’ Now I...

Mumbai, Oct 1: Usually people enter Bollywood and then forget their original roots, but musicians Gaurav Raina and Tapan Raj of electronica band Midival Punditz are determined that their non-film projects will be their priority always.
The Delhi-based duo, who have composed the music for 'Soundtrack', earlier scored music for 'Karthik Calling Karthik' and 'Dum Maaro Dum'.
In 'Soundtrack' they have collaborated with musician and composer Karsh Kale. However, they maintained that their crossover in Bollywood doesn't mean that they have.

After a glimpse of the arresting background score from Dum Maaro Dum, Midival Punditz and Karsh Kale have teamed up as music directors for Neerav Ghosh’s Soundtrack. The film is an official remake of the cult hit It’s All Gone Pete Tong about an Ibiza DJ whose chaotic lifestyle coincides with him going deaf. The original had a rollicking soundtrack of club hits by Goldfrapp, Depeche Mode, and others. Teaming two of the most popular remix and chill out artists the expectations are bound to be huge for this album. Does it succeed expectations?
The album hits the ground running with the awesome Atomizer sung by Gaurav Raina and Karsh Kale. Opening with a gritty guitar hook and launching into loud ganpati drums, with 80’s synthesizers layering the track. The composition of the track is great and fits in with the club mood of the film, if there...

Karthik Calling Karthik
Rubik’s Cube has as many uses as it has colours. Apparently playing with it is considered therapeutic. From Tennis Elbow to Schizophrenia, it can help restore many a physical and mental anomalies. It has also made quite a few screen appearances as a puzzle that characters routinely solve to convince audience of their high intelligence levels (I remember last seeing it in ‘In Pursuit of Happiness’). In Karthik Calling Karthik, it’s been used to reflect the entropy in Farhan Akhtar’s (Karthik’s) life. Capturing it in various stages of completion throughout the film, director Vijay Lalwani uses it as a leitmotif to punctuate Karthik’s unstable character graph. It’s a good ploy, except that it also mirrors the chaos clouding the screenplay.
Karthik is meek and introverted. The guilt of having been responsible for his bully brother’s death gnaws on his psyche endlessly.
