“Oppenheimer” got a big boost in its Oscar bid for Best Production Design with a win on February 10 at the Art Directors Guild Awards. Over the first 27 years of these prizes, the eventual Oscar winner has always numbered among the Adg nominees in the various genre categories. “Oppenheimer” prevailed in the period picture race over two of its Oscar rivals – “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “Napoleon” — plus “Asteroid City” and “Maestro.”
Oscar nominee, “Poor Things” won the fantasy film prize over another Oscar rival, “Barbie,” plus “The Creator.” “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3” and “Wonka.”
“Saltburn” won the contemporary category over “Beau is Afraid,” “John Wick: Chapter 4,” “The Killer” and “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.”

Poor Things, Oppenheimer and Saltburn won Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) Awards in the categories for fantasy, period and contemporary live action features, respectively, at the 28th Adg Awards, which were handed out Saturday at the Ray Dolby Ballroom in Ovation Hollywood.
Poor Things and Oppenheimer are additionally nominated for the Oscar in production design, alongside Barbie, Killers of the Flower Moon and Napoleon, which were also Adg nominated in their respective categories.
Over the past five years, the winner of the Adg’s period film prize has gone on to win the Oscar for production design twice: In 2020, for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and in 2021, for Mank. During that time, the production design Oscar went to the winner of the fantasy category twice, in 2019, for Black Panther, and 2022, for Dune. Production design Oscar nominees “Barbie,” “Poor Things,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Oppenheimer,” “Napoleon” all competed for the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards February 10 at Ovation Hollywood’s Ray Dolby Ballroom. “Poor Things” prevailed over “Barbie” for fantasy, and is now in the driver’s seat to win the Oscar. Throughout the season, it has been a race between these two big feminist films constructed around rebirth and unconventional world-building.
Meanwhile, “Oppenheimer” took period honors over “Asteroid City,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Maestro,” and “Napoleon.” Contemporary winner “Saltburn,” though, is not in the Oscar running. The animated feature winner was “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.”
The TV winners for one-hour period, fantasy, and contemporary were “The Great,” “The Last of Us,” and “Succession.” Movie or limited series went to “Beef,” and the half-hour series winner was “Reservation Dogs.”

“Saltburn,” “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were among the winners at the 28th Annual Art Director’s Guild Awards which took place in Hollywood on Saturday evening.
Hosted by Max Greenfield, the Adg Awards celebrated outstanding production design in theatrical motion pictures, television, commercials, animated features and music videos.
“Poor Things” production designers Shona Heath and James Price drew visual references ranging from the paintings of French futurist Albert Robida to Francis Ford Coppola’s “Dracula” to build Yorgos Lanthimos’ extraordinary sets.
In “Oppenheimer,” Ruth De Jong built Los Alamos from the ground up. But her most challenging task came when she had to build the Oval Office for the film’s third act. Working with supervising art director, Samantha Englander, the two had floated the idea of finding a pre-existing build of the Oval Office. They looked no further than HBO’s beloved political satire “Veep.” Not only was “Veep...

Six of the remaining nine guilds will be heard from over the next week, starting with both the actors and directors on Jan. 10. They will be followed in order by the cinematographers (Jan. 11), producers (Jan. 12), sound editors (Jan. 15), and visual effects artists (Jan. 16), all of whom will reveal their awards finalists during the Oscar nominations voting period.

With the fourth entry of the series already gaining massive praise and admiration all around, I guess it can be said without a shred of doubt that as a franchise, “John Wick” has managed to revolutionize an entire genre of action-oriented movies for the modern audience, all the while staying faithful and conveying adulation to the classic action genre. Screenwriter Derek Kolstad’s and director Chad Stahelski’s inventive vision and lead actor Keanu Reeves’ passion led to making the simplistic arc of an urban legend engaging and unique. Through the use of a uniquely choreographed hands-on approach to the fight sequences, wide shots and long takes, appropriate fight settings, evocative visuals, detailed worldbuilding, and a keen sense of self-awareness—the franchise became one of the most influential ones.

This post contains mild spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."
If you've seen the fourth installment in the "John Wick" franchise, you know that Keanu Reeves ends up in multiple breathtaking places where he has to fight/kill multiple people in creative ways. There's more than one scene that will likely drill its way into our pop culture consciousness (or every time we walk up a set of really long stairs), and one of those is an overhead shot of Wick shooting and flamethrowing his way through an abandoned Parisian building.
The sequence is mesmerizing and like nothing we've seen on the big screen before. I spoke with "John Wick: Chapter 4" director Chad Stahelski before the movie's release, and during that discussion, I asked about how he and his team came up with the idea and then pulled it off. (/Film held this part of the conversation until the movie was released.

In a time when the question “Why do movies look so bad?” is a main point of online media discourse, Lionsgate’s “John Wick” franchise stands out not just because of its genre elements, but because each sequel raises the stakes in terms of raw production value and cinematic splendor.
The latest movie, “John Wick: Chapter 4,” takes place not in empty warehouses, poorly lit apartments or barely populated streets, but in bustling and beautiful locales worldwide. Even an extended exposition sequence deigns to take place in a gorgeous art museum where supporting characters rattle off plot points while walking in front of giant paintings.
Considering the constant challenges of delivering big-screen spectacle while working under Covid-specific restrictions, as well as having a budget that is large but well below the stereotypical MCU installment, TheWrap wanted to know how and why “John Wick: Chapter 4” looks like one of the...

“The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” was already the most meta movie released this year, but one scene cut from the theatrical release took the concept much further. In director Tom Gormican’s comedy, star Nicolas Cage plays a fictionalized version of himself wrestling with a rough patch in his career, while being badgered by the imaginary “Nicky,” an abrasive manifestation of Cage’s younger self who mocks the actor for failing to achieve the greatness of his early days. In the original cut of the movie, Cage finally confronts his inner self in an ambitious black-and-white homage to “The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari.”
Cage has often cited the 1920 German Expressionist film as one of his favorites, and the opportunity to pay homage to its dream-like imagery was such a highlight of the experience that he continued to talk it up for the movie’s release, even though it didn’t make the final cut.

According to our expert predictions, period film contender “Once Upon A Time in Hollywood” is the clear frontrunner to win the Oscar for Best Production Design. We expect that three of its rival in that race at the Adg — “The Irishman,” “Jojo Rabbit” and “1917” — will also contend at the Oscars. John Wick will indeed return to kill again, as Lionsgate announced Monday that “John Wick: Chapter 4” will hit theaters May 21, 2021.
The announcement of a fourth “John Wick” film comes after the 3rd installment in the series, “John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum,” knocked “Avengers: Endgame” from the top spot at box office in its debut weekend. That’s nearly double the $30.4 million opening for 2017’s “John Wick: Chapter 2,” and the largest opening weekend for a Lionsgate release since the $102 debut of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2” in 2015.

That’s nearly double the $30.4 million opening for 2017’s “John Wick: Chapter 2,” and the largest opening weekend for a Lionsgate release since the $102 debut of “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 2” in 2015.

As with the two preceding “John Wick” films, both critics and audiences have given “Chapter 3” strong marks with an 88% Rotten Tomatoes score and an A- CinemaScore.

Just below are the 2015 Art Directors Guild nominations and as much as it may seem like Nightcrawler and American Sniper are currently bathing in nominations from all corners, what other contemporary films were going to get nominationsc The period category, however, does consist of a few alternatives that weren't nominated such as Mr. Turner and Fury and I can't help but wonder what the guild would have done in attempting to categorize Noah... Is it a period film or a fantasy filmc I'll leave that one alone... Perhaps one of the more surprisingly absent nominees is Maleficent. You could say there were too many special effects, but then again, isn't that what today's fantasy films primarily arec That said, just below are the nominations for contemporary, period and fantasy films and you can find my current Production Design predictions right here. I see this one as The Grand Budapest Hotel's to lose,...

The Art Directors Guild has announced nominees for the group's 19th annual awards, and films that have come on strong as of late like "American Sniper" and "Nightcrawler" were in the mix along notable extravagant displays in the period and fantasy categories. However, there were a few missing pieces. In the fantasy arena, both "The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies" and "Maleficent" came up short, while "Exodus: Gods and Kings" missed in the period department. The most shocking snub might be "Mr. Turner's" in that field, however. (And it would have been great to see "Snowpiercer" get some love here, but, alas.) As a reminder, the Guild implemented a new rule this season. Period films must now have the majority of sets and locations designed to portray a time period at least 20 years prior to the present awards year. Contemporary films, therefore, must have the majority of...

“Tracking Shot” is a monthly featurette here on Ioncinema.com that looks at a dozen or so projects that are moments away from lensing and this October we see a couple of items that we could certainly circle as potential Cannes 2014 bait. Thanks to our friends at Production Weekly for the helping hand in curating our list of future must see items.
Among the top foreign film productions, The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover‘s Peter Greenaway is looking at a late October, possible November start to begin filming a fragment of the great Soviet master filmmaker Sergei Eisenstein’s bio timeline. Eisenstein In Guanajuato will cover the portion of the filmmaker’s post Battleship Potemkin career, with Eisenstein landing in Mexico after Hollywood studios balked at the idea of working with him and in its place finds romance. My current 2013 Oscar predictions for Best Production Design have Anna Karenina winning with Life of Pi the runner up and if the 2013 Art Directors Guild Award winners have anything to suggest about these predictions it would seem I'm on to something as both films were awarded in the Period and Fantasy categories respectively along with a win for Skyfall in the Contemporary category. Skyfall, however, is not up for an Oscar. You can check out my predictions for the category here, and I have included the winners below in bold, red text along with the nominees in each category. I also added all three winners to my Oscar Overture, which is slowly beginning to fill up. Next up are the Ves Awards tomorrow, February 5. They're not the Oscars, but it's still good that there are awards for the people who make our television and film experiences so visually stunning. The Art Directors Guild has just announced the nominees for its 2012 awards.
The Guild honors production designers in television, film and advertising, dividing each medium into distinct categories. The result is that some productions not used to getting a lot of awards love do in fact get mentioned.
Take "Community" for example. While you'd be hard-pressed to find a TV critic who doesn't think this is one of TV's best comedies, the show gets nominated for virtually zero awards. The Art Directors Guild, however, took notice when appropriate -- the bizarre, visually interesting and incredible "Pillows and Blankets" episode (a Zap2It pick for one of the best episodes of the year) is nominated.
Of course, lots of the usual suspects make the list as...

I never thought I would be so bothered when it comes to technical awards at the Oscars, but I am already preparing myself for what I expect will be three snubs for a certain film. The Art Directors Guild has all but confirmed one of them will be Moonrise Kingdom's absence from the Production Design nominees by not nominating Adam Stockhausen and Gerald Sullivan's profoundly excellent work. I expect the same to happen at the Oscars and I'm sure Moonrise will be overlooked for Cinematography and Costumes as well, even though everything I'm describing went into what makes it such a great movie. So what did get nominated? Well, in the Contemporary Film category you have Flight, Skyfall, The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, The Impossible and Zero Dark Thirty. Of that group The Impossible and Zero Dark Thirty sound about right. Skyfall is a bit of a stretch,...

Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy came to an incredible finish this summer with the release of The Dark Knight Rises. And with the Oscar season very much on the horizon, Warner Bros. have launched their campaign for the final instalment in Nolan’s trilogy, alongside Ben Affleck’s Argo, the Wachowski siblings’ and Tom Tykwer’s Cloud Atlas, Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, and Steven Soderbergh’s Magic Mike.
Nolan’s final instalment entered the $1bn. club this summer, and has personally been one of my favourite films of the year by a long shot, earning a place on my favourite films of all time.
Naturally, the studios are all gearing up their campaigns for the coming awards season, and though some of the categories that Warner Bros. are aiming for here are more than a little bit hopeful, we could well see The Dark Knight Rises...

Christopher Nolan concludes his Batman trilogy in typically spectacular, ambitious fashion with "The Dark Knight Rises," but the feeling of frustration and disappointment is unshakable.
Maybe that was inevitable. Maybe nothing could have met the expectations established by 2008's "The Dark Knight," which revolutionized and set the standard for films based on comic books by being both high-minded and crowd-pleasing. With Christian Bale as his tortured superhero starting from 2005's "Batman Begins," Nolan has explored the complicated and conflicting motivations of man as well as the possibility of greatness and redemption within society.
Here, as director and co-writer, he's unrelenting in hammering home the dread, the sorrow, the sense of detachment and futility of a city on the brink of collapse with no savior in sight. Gotham is under siege in ways that tonally and visually recall 9/11; what is obviously the island of Manhattan gets cut off from the outside world at one point.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ The Dark Knight Rises is the epic conclusion to filmmaker Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy. It has been eight years since Batman vanished into the night, turning, in that instant, from hero to fugitive. Assuming the blame for the death of D.A. Harvey Dent, the Dark Knight sacrificed everything for what he and Commissioner Gordon both hoped was the greater good. For a time the lie worked, as criminal activity in Gotham City was crushed under the weight of the anti-crime Dent Act.
But everything will change with the arrival of a cunning cat burglar with a mysterious agenda. Far more dangerous, however, is the emergence of Bane, a masked terrorist whose ruthless plans...

Director Chris Nolan on the time lapse between films:
Our story picks up eight years later, when it seems that Batman and Commissioner Gordon have succeeded—the Dark Knight is no longer needed in Gotham. In that regard, Bruce Wayne has won the battle, but he is traumatized by what happened and doesn’t know how to move on from being the figure of Batman. ‘The Dark Knight Rises’ very much deals with the consequences...

That Whip It shows Drew Barrymore to be a gifted filmmaker does not come as a surprise. She’s been around Hollywood her whole life and, given her lineage, movies run deep in her blood. One could reasonably assume she’d pick up enough from one of her countless collaborations with gifted directors, or conversations with relatives, to ably make the transition. However, successfully directing a movie is one thing. Making a picture so full of energy, one that expertly blends bone crunching sports scenes with an earnest look at a chic counterculture and an honest depiction of a mother-daughter relationship? That’s something else entirely. And that’s exactly what Barrymore’s done in her raucous tribute to following your heart and finding your niche, a classically constructed coming of age story that fully embraces its girl power attitude. Neither groundbreaking in content or construction, the film contentedly offers recognizable characters, trades...
