Apple TV’s flagship series “The Morning Show” returned last fall with its third season and with it comes the show’s best cast to date. Nicole Beharie, Jon Hamm, Tig Notaro, and Stephen Fry all joined the cast while mainstays Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Billy Crudup all turned in their best work yet.
However, it’s the show’s supporting players, who have been here since day one, that makes the series so good. Karen Pittman is a prime example of that. The series depicts the behind-the-scenes drama of a US morning TV show and Pittman plays Mia Jordan, a key producer of said show. Pittman has always been an actress who possesses a powerful screen presence and that is true here, too. She captivates audiences (and the other actors) but also smartly sews vulnerability into a character who has some power in the show.

I like how, at some point, we all collectively agreed that spooky season starts in September. Without even glancing at the calendar, I suddenly feel an urge to start watching horror films and TV shows the moment August ends. Even Hollywood has cottoned onto this recently, with films like "The Nun II" and "A Haunting in Venice" getting a head start on this year's competition before theaters and streaming services are flooded with horror flicks and supernatural thrillers. Well, that and "Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," but who isn't a little scared of the Mastermind herself?
If you're eager to get a head-start on Netflix's annual Halloween lineup (which is called "Netflix & Chills" because no company knows how to be hip like the "youths" quite like Netflix), you might want to check out the German-language series "Dear Child" (the original German title is "Liebes Kind"). Christopher Walken could be walkin’ his way toward a third Emmy nomination with his sparkling role in Stephen Merchant‘s hit Amazon Prime Video series “The Outlaws.”
The show, which aired on the BBC over here in the UK, follows the misadventures of seven strangers who are thrown together when each has to complete a community payback sentence in Bristol, Britain. There, they find a huge amount of money that belongs to Claes Bang‘s dangerous gangster. Walken is one of the many shining lights in the series and plays American Frank Sheldon — a former conman who now lives in the West Country with his estranged daughter and grandchildren.
It’s no understatement to say that Walken is one of the most watchable actors ever. Whether it’s delivering a monologue about a watch in “Pulp Fiction” or regaling a proverb about two mice and a bucket of cream in “Catch Me if You Can,...

Apple TV+’s “The Last Thing He Told Me,” adapted from the best-selling novel of the same name by Laura Dave, arrives 17 years after we bade farewell to Sydney Bristow, and critics agree it’s great to see Jennifer Garner on television again. Though she headlined HBO’s “Camping” and has a recurring role on Starz’s “Party Down,” this is Garner’s most solid Emmy vehicle since “Alias” earned her four nominations throughout its five-season run on ABC.
Artisanal woodworker Hannah Michaels (Garner) has worked to shield herself from unwanted surprises, but that carefully curated existence is thrown into disarray when her husband (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) vanishes amidst an FBI raid of his software startup. All Hannah’s given is a handwritten note requesting she protect his 16-year-old daughter (Angourie Rice). The mismatched duo must dodge investigators and a host of seedy figures while attempting to uncover the truth behind their newfound state of jeopardy.

On October 13, ‘The Watcher” became the latest Netflix release from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan. In the spooky thriller, the Brannock family moves into what was supposed to be their suburban dream home, but it quickly becomes a living hell. Ominous letters from someone calling themself “The Watcher” are just the beginning as the neighborhood’s sinister secrets come spilling out. Inspired by the true story of the infamous “Watcher” house in New Jersey, the limited series stars Naomi Watts, Bobby Cannavale, Jennifer Coolidge, Mia Farrow and Margo Martindale.
Reviews are mixed for the star-studded Netflix show that will compete in the limited series categories at the upcoming Golden Globes and SAG Awards, but the stellar ensemble should garner plenty of buzz.

Steve Martin finally has his first chance at an Emmy nomination in the Best Comedy Actor category for his performance as Charles-Haden Savage on Hulu’s “Only Murders in the Building,” a series he created with John Hoffman. Playing a once-successful actor who now leads a lonely life in a lavish apartment building, Martin brings his gifts for comedy and drama to a dazzling, three-dimensional performance I think is his best since 1999’s “Bowfinger” more than 20 years ago.
The actor’s comedic line deliveries and moments of slapstick humor are inspired, and the more complex dramatic shades he brings to this well-written character make the performance shine. As Joel Keller (Decider) praises, “It’s been a minute since we’ve seen Martin, but we appreciate his later-in-life desire to find the funny in emotional moments and less broad, physical shtick.” Emmys voters, take notice.

While Covert Affairs fans await word on whether USA will renew the globe-trotting drama, the intense fifth season comes to a close Thursday as Annie (Piper Perabo) and McQuaid (Nic Bishop) try to get villain-turned-potential asset Belenko (Shawn Doyle) out of Argentina. "It's a classic Covert Affairs episode in that there's high stakes, we're abroad, they're operating without a net, and they're up against a tremendously savvy adversary," co-creator Matt Corman says, referring to the Russian Vega assassins who want Belenko dead. As co-creator Chris Ord explains, "If anything, the bar is higher than last season when Annie's goal was to kill Henry.

Fellow Liberal Dead-heads, this is Ryne from The Moon is a Dead World. I’ve signed on to do a sort of recap/review of each week’s horror hits, so welcome to DEADtime TV. A new addition to the DEADtime TV compilation this week: The Following season two, featuring a review from Kevin Lovell of Screen-Connections!
The Following: “Resurrection” - Sunday, January 19, 10 Pm
After many months of anticipation, The Following has finally returned with its second season premiereand while I know some are less than impressed with this series and bad mouth it, I for one couldn’t be loving it more and the second season premiere was a perfect reminder of just why this is already one of my favorite currently airing shows.

Greg Bryk ("A History Of Violence"), Greyston Holt ("Alcatraz") and Paul Greene ("The Client List") have joined Laura Vandervoort ("Smallville") in the new 'werewolf' TV series "Bitten", now shooting in studio and on location in Toronto, Hamilton and in the Hespeler area near Cambridge, Ontario.
Based on the "Women of the Otherworld" novels by author Kelley Armstrong, the thriller stars Vandervoort as 'Elena Michaels', the world’s only female werewolf:
"...a foster child, 'Elena' (Vandervoort) had always craved a normal life and thought she finally found it with her boyfriend 'Clayton Danvers' (Holt).

Movie lovers nationwide were saddened Thursday (April 4) when news broke that legendary critic Roger Ebert had passed away at the age of 70 -- just a day after announcing he was scaling back on work because his cancer had returned.
A few highlights for Ebert fans include a round-up of Ebert's best tweets, the movies Ebert most disliked, some outtakes of him and fellow critic Gene Siskel from the 1980s and a first-person account of interacting with Ebert as an aspiring writer.
There was also a twitpic posted by NPR's Melissa Block of Ebert's license plate, which film buffs will instantly love and get a chuckle about (below).
President Obama released a statement:
Michelle and I are saddened to hear about the passing of Roger Ebert. For a generation of Americans - and especially Chicagoans - Roger was the movies. When he didn't like a film, he was honest; when he did,...

I recently stumbled upon the Canadian sitcom Men With Brooms, which aired last year on the CBC channel in Canada. Men With Brooms wasn't picked up for a second season, making the 12 episodes of the first season the entire run of the series. That's a real shame in my mind, because as the show progressed it began to really develop into something special.
Men With Brooms was a sweet little sitcom about a group of friends who hang out in a bar and form a curling team. You know curling, that sport we try to care about during the Winter Olympics but can't because it's too boring? The one on ice with the stones and the brooms? It's all the excitement of hockey only without the fights, at one millionth of the speed and with no actual excitement.
The show is based off the 2002 movie of the same name starring...

The television academy did a pretty good job at picking its Emmy nominees this year. Will the list of winners be just as satisfying?
We'll find out on Sunday (Sept. 18) when the Emmys air live at 8 p.m. Et/5 Pt on Fox. We have some ideas of our own, though, on how the awards will play out -- and, in our ideal world, how they ought to go. Read on for our predictions, and let us know your own picks in the comments.
Outstanding supporting actress - drama
Will win: Margo Martindale. Martindale's performance as tough hillbilly Mags on "Justified" was a tour-de-force, and she'll win the hardware. She's a first-time nominee, but has been around Hollywood a long time and we think the Emmys will finally give her some recognition. (Though I won't be mad if Michelle Forbes takes it).
Should win: Michelle Forbes. In truth, Martindale also "should" win,...

Ready for more 'Real Housewives'? Well, you better be if these rumors are true!
Despite what Andy Cohen said (then backtracked on a tiny bit), more 'Real Housewives' shows are reportedly in works. Forget 'Real Housewives of Toronto' -- these shows are stateside in Las Vegas and Arizona.
A couple of months ago, Bravo honcho Andy Cohen told a magazine there weren't going to be more 'Real Housewives' shows after 'Real Housewives of Miami.' However, when our own Joel Keller asked Cohen about the state of the franchise, he seemed to hedge a bit and said, "... I mean, look, never say never, but I think we're really good right now."

Hey, 'Outsourced' fans, you're not going to like this bit of news: Series star Ben Rappaport has booked a new gig.

Here's something we won’t be seeing on the Oscar show: a PricewaterhouseCoopers accountant explaining the plot of "Inception." But show writer Bruce Vilanch tells the Onion's Joel Keller that he wanted to put a bit like that on the show, before realizing that it'd take too long for a joke about a movie that isn't even one of the favorites. The interview also touches on the difference between comedians (which he says current Oscar hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway are) and comics (which they're not), why he told David...

The 68th Annual Golden Globe Awards are this Sunday, and, while much of the buzz is going to be on the movie side of the ledger, the night's television awards are always fun to watch. For one thing, they're unpredictable, and not a harbinger of who will or won't win Emmys. Steve Carell, for instance, hasn't won an Emmy for 'The Office' yet, but got a Globe the first time he was nominated.
But the second reason is that it's a good way for TV fans to stop and take a break from the winter weekend doldrums and pay tribute to the year on the tube that just passed. It's not as "important" as the Emmys, but it's at least as much fun.

Has Conan O'Brien lost his touch? In news that will surely bring a smile to Jay Leno's face, it's been reported that the audience for his much-hyped new TV talk show dropped by one-third on the second night out.
According to TBS, 2.8 million people watched Tuesday night's 'Conan,' down from 4.2 million viewers for the debut one night earlier. Although audience figures are not yet available for NBC's 'The Tonight Show' -- which O'Brien quit in January in a showdown with veteran comedian Jay Leno -- it's been averaging 3.6 million viewers nightly so far this season.

The big announcement finally came from both 'The Daily Show' and 'The Colbert Report' Thursday night. That much was expected. As was the notion that the announcement had something to do with a rally, a la Glenn Beck's Restoring Honor rally from August 28.
What wasn't expected was the announcement of two competing rallies, Jon Stewart's Rally to Restore Sanity and Stephen Colbert's March to Keep Fear Alive. On Sept. 9, TV Squad's Joel Keller wrote that Stewart's persona didn't really jibe with the idea of a rally. Turns out he was right on the money, which makes the competing rallies (Stewart's implores America to "take it down a notch") so perfect.

• In a provocative piece, Joel Keller wonders "when does a comedy stop being a comedy?" As a starting point, he uses this frank admission by "Nurse Jackie" star Edie Falco as she picked up the best comedy series actress Emmy: "Oh, this is the most ridiculous thing that has ever, ever happened in the history of this lovely awards show. I'm not funny!" For Joe, "The outcry that we're hearing about the show seems to stem from the fact that Falco, who won Emmys for playing the not-at-all-funny Carmela Soprano, beat out such comedic stalwarts as Tina Fey, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Amy Poehler. But just because she's a serious character in a lightly funny...

Emmy nominations are coming soon! Before we find out who gets a nomination (and who gets robbed) on Thu., June 8, the editors of TV Squad wanted to sound off on our picks for this year's categories.
This past season gave us such a bounty of worthy shows and stars, and though none of us are members of the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, we can still file our own dream ballots. My colleagues Maggie Furlong (aka The Show Girl), Joel Keller and Andy Scott joined me in deciding who was most deserving this year.

I've figured out where MTV wants to fit into your television viewing life cycle. It's a place they've been filling already, only now they're adding scripted programming to the mix. As teens grow beyond 'iCarly,' there's been no place to go. Adult shows are too sophisticated; dealing with issues they either aren't ready to tackle yet, or don't even understand.
Enter 'The Hard Times of Rj Berger.' As my esteemed colleague Joel Keller pointed out earlier this month, 'Berger' -- 'Hung' for the junior set -- seems to rather quickly ignore the titular appendage. That's actually an asset for the future of the show. What kind of legs can a high school comedy be if its obsessed with its lead character's genitalia all the time?
It does come up again in the third episode, in an incredibly awkward way, but it's everything that happened around...

Is there anything cuter than puppies? I think not, and that's probably why Cottonelle chose to use puppies in their toilet paper commercials. Let's face it, when you're talking about toilet paper, it's best to distract us as much as possible from the product's actual use.
I've rounded up a few of my favorite Cottonelle puppy ads through the years, but I didn't realize until our own Joel Keller pointed it out that the voice of the puppy is actually Zach Braff from 'Scrubs'!

CBC, a Canadian public TV network, revealed a few days ago that Men with Brooms, a sitcom based on the hit Canadian film of the same name, will be part of its 2010 fall schedule grid.
Since The Cultural Post didn't attend to the CBC 2010 Fall Preview event, it unfortunately has no precise informations about the script of the TV series. However, from what we all know for now, the sitcom will take place many years after the events in the curling film Men with Brooms, a film made in 2002 starring Paul Gross.
Besides, have in mind that Men with Brooms will begin production in Winnipeg, Manitoba and will go through August. The curling scenes will be shot at an actual rink, the Fort Rouge Curling Club.
Paul Gross will have a cameo role in the sitcom and will be the narrator.
Finally, the sitcom Men with Brooms will premiere on Monday,...

As we head into summer, most of us TV addicts regard the finale season just passed with a combination of sorrow and relief -- sorrow that our favorite TV shows have ended (some of them for good), and relief that with less TV to watch, maybe we'll actually start being productive around the house for once. (Yeah, right. After all, there's always 'Wipeout.')
Our DVR Divas panel of Joel Keller, Patricia Chui, Andy Scott and Kelly Woo, unwilling to let go, took one last nostalgic look back at this season's big finishes -- from hugely anticipated series finales ('Lost,' '24') to big series finales ('Grey's Anatomy,' 'Dancing With the Stars') to endings that seemed anticlimactic ('The Office').

To quote Professor Farnsworth, "Good news, everyone!" It's looking likely that 'Chuck' will be getting another season on NBC, according to the Ausiello Files, although no official word has been sent to the press as of yet.
This is comforting news, as ratings for its current season haven't been stellar, despite the excellent pseudo-season finale, which was written before its six-episode extension was commissioned. Our own Joel Keller has an excellent interview here on TV Squad with 'Chuck' co-creator Chris Fedak about "Season 3.2."
While the previous episode had (spoiler alert!) Chuck and Sarah hooking up at the end, it does make one wonder where the series could go from that point onward. After all, that seemed to be the point of the series since the first episode. The good news is that we're going to find out when the first of six new episodes begin airing on Monday.

Our brothers and sisters over at TV Squad have busted through the boob tube and brought with them the following juicy bits of must-see eye candy. A couple of ABC comedies have gone out of their way to be topical lately, with The Middle incorporating the Ncaa Final Four and Phil on Modern Family eagerly anticipating the release of the iPad. Speaking of the iPad episode, Joel Keller has a different view which you can read here. In light of his recent personal problems this doesn't seem like a huge surprise, but Charlie Sheen may be leaving Two-and-Half Men after the current season. The Price is Right commemorated April Fool's Day with an appearance from host Drew Carey's nemesis Mimi from the old Drew Carey Show. Cult TV series Mystery Science Theater 3000 has released its seventeenth volume on DVD, consisting of four classic episodes. You can read the review here.

(S09E09) While the illustrious boss-man -- Aka Joel Keller -- is off at the TCA Tour stalking creator Bill Lawrence, I have the honor of stepping in and looking at the latest episode of Scrubs. J.D. returned this week, and the opening sequence slipped back to having him hang the final x-ray, rather than Lucy, who took over the last couple of episodes.
With J.D. back, the silliness between him and Turk returned as well, but it didn't dominate the episode as it so often has in the past. It was also nice to see the old Elliot in full neurotic meltdown mode. Plus, the scene at home where she was scarfing down her meat salad instead of making sweet love to J.D. was almost too authentic to real life with a pregnant woman. It was nice to see J.D. being supportive, if frustrated. And...

Well, they've announced a winner. Someone out there in TV land has been caught canoodling on the clock with a co-worker and gotten canned for it and sorry, all you "Fire David Letterman" fans, it wasn't the Late Show host.
Espn has fired Baseball Tonight's Steve Philips and Brooke Hundley, the staffer he was having an affair with who The New York Post dubbed as the "tubby temptress." That's The New York Post, putting the "object" in "objectivity" since 1993.
Speaking of treating women as objects, our own playa Joel Keller speculated in a piece for Asylum if the controversy with Philips has reached a higher fever pitch than David Letterman's because Philips' squeeze play is more "plain." Would you pay less attention to this latest TV host fling if the affair in question had more sprinkles on it?

Word of our podcast revival must be spreading like an Alaskan oil fire because we've just booked our first celebrity guest...and it's a biggie in my book.
Late Show writer and author Bill Scheft will join me and TV Squad bossman Joel Keller on next week's Apb Podcast. We'll talk about his work on David Letterman's late night show and the changing landscape of late night TV as well as his newest novel, Everything Hurts.
If you've got questions for our guest (and I'm sure you do), leave them in the comments section below and we'll ask them to our gracious guest when we record the podcast at 10 a.m. Eastern on Tuesday, Oct. 27. I'm sure you're all dying to know the answer to one big question, so don't waste your time by posting it below: what the hell does Bill have against 49ers coach Mike Singletary?!?

(S06E03) Your regular host, the esteemed Joel Keller, is off hiking the Appalachian Trail this week, so he asked me to cover for him. He should be back in time for the nuptials of Pam and Jim next week. But before we could get to that, David Wallace decided to throw new co-manager Jim a major curveball fresh into his new job.
I'm with Joel on the David Wallace situation. Is he really as clueless about how things are at the Scranton branch? My experience with executives is that ... well, he probably is. In fact, on the one hand, I'll say it's a smart move to make Jim and Michael co-managers. Wallace knows the branch brings in solid sales figures, but he also knows what a loose cannon Michael is.
Maybe the thought was that Jim could reign him in and bring a semblance of sanity to the office.

Our brothers and sisters over at TV Squad have busted through the boob tube and brought with them the following juicy bits of must-see eye candy. Las Vegas magician/comedy team Penn and Teller will be starring in a dramedy series on ABC in which they will play magicians by night and detectives by day. News Radio and Office Space star Stephen Root is going to be playing a parole officer on Fox's 24. Joel Keller has an interview with Drew Carey about what's going on at The Price is Right. The idea of a second season for Dollhouse seemed pretty remote at one point but it's happening and here's a trailer. Would you believe J.J. Abrams is producing a comedy for Fox? ...and finally, the Fall season is here and here are TV Squad's reviews of Cougar Town, Modern Family, and Eastwick.

State of Play
A Russell Crowe-starring thriller that entangles 3 deaths, Washington politics, old-school journalism, and new wave blogging, State of Play is by far your best mainstream choice this week. In his review, Jeffrey M. Anderson said: "it's probably the best newspaper/journalism movie in years," and "State of Play moves well, with grace and intelligence as well as a measure of scrappiness and a sense of working by the seat of one's pants." Buy it. Also on Blu-ray.

A movie co-starring Mariah Carrey might not seem like a noteworthy piece of cinema, but it's more than meets the eye. The film focuses on woman and her brothers who set out to find their estranged father in hopes that he will help save their leukemia-suffering sibling. In his review, Joel Keller said: "Tennessee isn't action-packed, but it has a story that...

In Bill Lawrence's interview with our own Joel Keller, he said: "There's going to be a new young lady with a voice over and she's either going to be funny and talented and great, or the show's gonna crater."
Well, now we know who that young lady is and I'm sure Kerry Bishe (Virtuality) will be thrilled to find out that Lawrence is hinging the entire success of Scrubs 2.0 on her. No pressure! She joins Dave Franco, cast earlier this week, and Michael Mosley to complete the new faces of Scrubs (Med School?).
Besides being the new narrative voice for the show, and presumably the lead, Bishe will be a 22-year old first-year med student. She's the first in her family of fisherman to go to college. Mosley, the other new cast member signed today, is ten years older than the rest of the students, the result of a...

Something about Yonkers Joe bugged me.
Don't get me wrong; it was a very well-made and well-acted film, with a very touching story about fathers, sons, and the difficulties of raising special needs kids. It's got two stars, Chazz Palminteri and Christine Lahti, that give their usual solid performances. And it even has a story that's got some nice tension and is emotionally satisfying.
But something bugged me. And I couldn't put my finger on why until the very end, but when I did, it made my discomfort crystal clear: This guy's a crook. Why should I care about him at all?Filed under: Drama, Theatrical Reviews

The dramatic series The Nine, about a group of bank hold-up hostages, was pulled after just seven episodes on ABC in November due to low ratings. Reportedly six other episodes were shot but left unaired. ABC Entertainment President Stephen McPhearson was reportedly a big fan of the show and the network maintained that the series would return. As recent as last week, that was reinforced when McPhearson told Media Village's editor Jacki Garfinkel, "I love the show, but honestly we don't have a set game plan right now." We now have some additional information.
At the annual Television Critics Association (TCA) tour in Pasadena, McPhearson addressed questions from critics about The Nine. He told the audience that the network may air the remaining six episodes sometime in this season -- likely before May. Unfortunately, the show is almost certainly cancelled; production has been completed and no further episodes have been ordered.
