If I’ve learned anything from Trick ‘r Treat, it’s that you don’t disrespect Halloween. “I hate Halloween,” says Emma (Leslie Bibb) in the opening scene. She blows out the lone jack o’lantern and whines to her husband Henry (Tahmoh Penikett) about taking down the decorations on Halloween night. Moments later, she gets her comeuppance and becomes bloody and artsy décor on the front lawn. Her head is chopped off and her limbs hung with rope in the trees, a pumpkin lollipop shoved into her gaping mouth. Sam might be tiny, but he suffers no fools when it comes to the beloved holiday. It’s a gnarly image that drives home the film’s central theme: Halloween is sacred and should be treated as such.
With the long-awaited theatrical run this October, Michael Dougherty’s Trick ‘r Treat remains an emblem for great anthologies everywhere and perfectly...

Mentoring emerging cinematographers has always been a key mission at the EnergaCamerimage International Film Festival and this year’s online version of the event features a score of streaming master classes and seminars that inform and offer insights from top filmmakers and technology experts.
Streaming through the end of 2020 (online.energacamerimage.pl), the talks and teach-ins are, with rare exceptions, accessible without a password or online Camerimage entry card – unlike the usual live format of master classes at the festival, which invariably sell out if you don’t find a seat at least 20 minutes before the start.
One of the buzziest events from the festival, which officially ran Nov. 13-20, is the virtual career masterclass with cinematographer Phedon Papamichael, in which he discusses his remarkable career, leading up to his latest feature, Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7.”

There’s a nice moment about halfway through “Monster Hunter,” when Captain Artemis, a U.S. Army ranger played by Milla Jovovich, and Hunter, a warrior of uncertain provenance played by Tony Jaa, are preparing to head into battle against, well, a monster.
Captain Artemis looks at Hunter with a steely gaze, because that’s clearly her forte, and says something she’s no doubt said plenty of times before in plenty of other dicey situations: “Let’s do this.”
Whereupon Hunter, who doesn’t speak English because he’s not from our world, gives her a blank look. “Huh?” he says.
Artemis stops, realizes her schtick isn’t playing to this audience, and shrugs. “Never mind,” she says.
It’s an amusing exchange, one of only a few in Paul W.S. Anderson’s extravagant foolishness based on the Capcom video game of the same name. But “Let’s do this,...

Whenever an artistic medium dares to cheat on its loyal fanbase by scurrying over to another, anger and thinkpieces likely follow. Technology has amped up an uncanny-valley-sort of realism in video games. Movies have added more CGI to its blockbuster spectacles and animation. Thus, the previously distinct media have drawn blurrier lines with consumers none too pleased. Games like Quantic Dreams’ Heavy Rain earn the title of “cinematic”, either as mere descriptor or complaint. A quick gameplay video affirms this: most of the action simply propels the player through a grounded narrative with only a few promptly-timed button mashes driving what looks like an animated movie. Cinema-goers as well have lambasted recent multi-million-dollar projects like Gravity for sequences of first-person, graphics-laden action, not unlike a Call of Duty cut-scene (the latest of which, by the way, features CGI-fied Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey...

Back in September, when MTV News caught up with "The Three Musketeers" director Paul W.S. Anderson, he promised audiences a swashbuckling good time when his latest movie hits theaters. Now that its release date is finally here, fans can judge it for themselves.
Based on the beloved and familiar tale of adventure, intrigue and that famous "All for one, and one for all" motto, the film features an ensemble cast: Logan Lerman, Christoph Waltz, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Ray Stevenson, Matthew Macfadyen, Luke Evans, Juno Temple, James Corden and Mads Mikkelsen.

Other than John Carpenter’s Halloween, very few fright films have used the October 31 setting as an effective backdrop.
Most of the All Hallow's-themed genre movies are outright clunkers and don’t actually do anything with the holiday itself, the horror version of Christmas; most, if not all, of them could have been set on the 4th of July, and what difference would it have made? A big part of the fun behind Trick ’R Treat, the directing debut of X2 and Superman Returns screenwriter Michael Dougherty, is that it’s a Halloween movie through and through; its chills are all specific to that night, and it depends on the holiday’s trappings for its look and feel from first frame to last.
For that alone, Trick ’R Treat earns points in my book, but thankfully, Dougherty also understands that Halloween is also about having fun by scaring people; while...

“I have this vision… Of October,” says Gil. “Where we go to a haunted house every weekend”.
“Yes!” I exclaim
Two weeks later… not exactly panning out (mostly due to my dumbness). But we did go to the Forest Of Fear up in Tuxedo, NY, where they have the Renaissance Fair. That night, however, belonged to the fact that they had carnival rides, one of them being The Gravitron (a.k.a. a spaceship that spins super fast with you up against its walls). Definitely the most Intense Gravitron I’ve ever been on, definitely the best one too. There was also a ride called Quasar. I don’t know about you, but being around things called gravitron and quasar truly make me want to make up epic Dio-esque metal songs about riding in them and going to slay alien dragons.
