Way back in 2003, the hit CBS series Jag introduced its audience to Jethro Gibbs and his crack team of investigators, who focus on navy-related crimes from the forensics and investigative side.
This 'back-door pilot' led the way to NCIS, which is now in its 21st season and has inspired multiple spin-offs.
There's a lot to celebrate about this success, and recently the show paid homage to its roots with a landmark 1,000th episode. However, two major snubs ruffled the feathers of some fans, and for good reason.
All The Way Back To The Start
In episode #1000, appropriately named 'A Thousand Yards', NCIS Director Leon Vance is shot while arguing with his estranged son Jared. When the culprit is revealed to be Jared's new girlfriend, Lindsey Wexler, it doesn't take the team long to discover that she is daughter of sleeper agent Leonard Rush, whom Gibbs took down in the very...

It doesn’t take a team of federal agents to figure out that if you picked up this magazine, you’re probably one of the 300 million people from around the world who watched some version of NCIS last year. That’s just a smidge under the entire population of the United States. The massive fandom around the military procedural, which reigns as the most watched drama on broadcast TV, began in 2003 with a spectacular series premiere from cocreators Donald P. Bellisario and Don McGill. The episode, inspired by the 1997 movie Air Force One, introduced what would become the show’s signature recipe of action, emotion, and a dash of humor when agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs (Mark Harmon) and Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard (David McCallum) investigate a mysterious death aboard the presidential plane. We fell in love with Gibbs’ gruffness and Ducky’s intellect. We were intrigued by the twisty case...

NCIS Season 21 is going by very quickly. Fans may be upset to learn it’s also already half over.
The two Hollywood strikes not only delayed production for months – it has also led to a much shorter season.
Five episodes from Season 21 have already aired, with only five new ones left to debut this spring.
Hopefully, CBS will order NCIS Season 22 soon, so fans can look forward to more new content next year.
Previous episodes of NCIS are also available for streaming on Paramount+, allowing fans to enjoy older content during the upcoming summer hiatus. That includes the Ducky tribute episode that said goodbye to David McCallum earlier this season.
As for the remaining episodes this season, some noteworthy ones are already on the CBS TV schedule.
NCIS Season 21, Episode 6 information
A new episode called Strange Invaders airs on Monday, April 1. This serves as NCIS Season 21, Episode 6. It debuts at 9/8c on CBS.

NCIS stars Michael Weatherly and Pauley Perrette were both known for their quick humor in the long-running action thriller. But their characters being so funny didn’t always stem from the show’s script. Rather, it was just something they both agreed the show needed.
How Pauley Perrette and Michael Weatherly injected humor into ‘NCIS’ Pauley Perrette, Michael Weatherly, Mark Harmon | John Heller/WireImage
NCIS could be an action heavy program full of stakes and drama. But the series was often able to balance out its darker subject matter with humor. Weatherly and Perrette played a huge part in making sure the show didn’t take itself too seriously.
“Mark and I can create something — just a look between the characters, or some funny physical thing,” Perrette once told TV Guide (via Live Journal). “My job is to take all these long lines and not only memorize and spit them out,...

The NCIS franchise continues to expand, and one of the upcoming shows is going to give fans exactly what they’ve wanted for years: more Tony (Michael Weatherly) and Ziva (Cote de Pablo)! De Pablo left NCIS in 11 before returning for the Season 16 finale and four episodes of Season 17. Weatherly exited at the end of Season 13 and was last seen at the end of the tribute to Ducky and the late David McCallum in the current 21st season. The new series was given a straight-to-series order on February 28. “We’ve been talking about this story for many years, and now with John McNamara at the helm, we are ready,” said Weatherly and de Pablo at the time. “The world of Tony and Ziva (and daughter Tali) promises to be an action-packed roller coaster fueled by love, danger, tears and laughter. CBS has already renewed a few shows for the 2024-2025 season—Tracker (Season 2), Ghosts (Season 4), and Fire Country (Season 3)—and one that seems to be a lock, for its 22nd season, is NCIS. “You never know how things are going to go,” Sean Murray (who has played Timothy McGee on the long-running procedural since its first season) tells TV Insider. “But knowing the way that things are going now and seeing the response we’re getting here in this sort of abbreviated Season 21, I think things will go well and I would expect to see a Season 22, very much so.” That sentiment echoes what Brian Dietzen (who has been playing Dr. Jimmy Palmer since Season 1) told us ahead of the special tribute episode to the late David McCallum and his character, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, he co-wrote. “I’m hoping [there will be another season]. For its tribute to the late David McCallum and his character, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard, NCIS pulled off quite the surprise: the return of Michael Weatherly as Tony Dinozzo. It was kept under wraps, besides those who needed to know, and the scene allowed for the show to honor Ducky and reunite Tony with close friends Timothy McGee (Sean Murray) and Dr. Jimmy Palmer. It, of course, included a new nickname for McGee (McHurry). When TV Insider caught up with Murray — lots of fun stuff to come from this chat, but here’s the start! —we asked him about filming that as well as the upcoming Tony and Ziva spinoff with Weatherly and Cote de Pablo. Michael Weatherly just returned for that fantastic tribute to Ducky and David McCallum, and that episode made me cry. It was so good. Sean Murray: That was a really good one. And Dietzen helped pen that one.

Perhaps mindful of previous years, in which eagle-eyed viewers have jumped on omissions, this year’s “In Memoriam” — which began with footage of the recently deceased Russian opposition leader and subject of last year’s winning documentary Navalny — seemed comprehensive but at the same time not enough.

The NCIS franchise is expanding again — with a pair of very familiar faces from its past.
Cote de Pablo and Michael Weatherly are set to star in an untitled, Paris-set spinoff of the series, reprising their roles as, respectively, Ziva David and Tony Dinozzo. The series order comes on the heels of Weatherly returning to the flagship CBS series last week as NCIS paid tribute to the late David McCallum.
De Pablo left NCIS in 2013, and Weatherly departed two years later. In the show’s story, Tony left the service to raise his and Ziva’s daughter after her supposed death. When she was discovered to be still alive years later (de Pablo made several guest appearances in season 17), she completed a final mission and was reunited with Tony and their daughter in Paris.

NCIS fans enjoyed the long-awaited return of Michael Weatherly.
The former NCIS star played Special Agent Anthony Dinozzo before moving on to other projects, but he returned for the Ducky tribute episode.
Actor David McCallum passed away during the hiatus, forcing the writers to end the run of Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard.
Michael shared many scenes with David during his years on NCIS, and the producers needed to add some brevity to an emotional episode.
Having Dinozzo back with his unique sense of humor was perfect for the show. But it has also led to fans wanting more.
Not everyone could return for the big night. Here’s why Mark Harmon didn’t film new Gibbs scenes.

NCIS fans were disappointed that Mark Harmon didn’t return for the Ducky tribute episode.
Many had hoped that Leroy Jethro Gibbs would return to say goodbye to his long-time friend, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard.
Gibbs was referenced several times during the night, and footage from past episodes was also used. But no new footage of Gibbs debuted that night.
Actor David McCallum passed away during the NCIS hiatus, ending his run of being on the show for 20 seasons.
The writers did a good job honoring David and Ducky, with Brian Dietzen (he plays Dr. Jimmy Palmer) helping create the episode.
Past characters were referenced frequently during the tribute, but the funeral wasn’t in the episode (only the lead-up). Maybe additional people (like Gibbs) were at the event but didn’t get shown on television?
Why was Gibbs not a bigger part of the Ducky tribute episode

As the NCIS team mourned the death of Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard — and his portrayer, the late David McCallum — in February 19’s “The Stories We Leave Behind,” Michael Weatherly made a surprise return to the show. At the end of the episode, Weatherly’s Tony Dinozzo popped by the autopsy room and gave a consoling pep talk to Dr. Jimmy Palmer (Brian Dietzen). If the NCIS showrunners had their druthers, though, it wouldn’t have been just Tony coming back. It would have been everyone, including Mark Harmon’s Leroy Jethro Gibbs. “Our original thought was, ‘Can we get everybody?’” co-showrunner Steven D. Binder told TVLine, adding that they imagined an all-star reunion akin to one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Avengers movies. But budgetary and logistical issues arose, and so Binder and fellow showrunner David J. North zeroed in on Weatherly’s cameo. “We really gave a lot of thought to who,...

The late 1950s and the entirety of the 1960s was the golden age for big, brawny, studio-produced action-adventure epics. Films like "The Bridge on the River Kwai," "The Guns of Navarone," and "The Train" plopped big movie stars in the midst of finely crafted yarns about unflappable heroes pooling their expertise to pull off seemingly impossible tasks. Most of these were next-phase World War II movies that eschewed the reverential tone of the films made in the immediate wake of the conflict's end; they were less about the Axis enemy, and more about the ingenuity of men in high-pressure situations. When done well, they were hailed by critics and ticket-buyers alike.

NCIS honored the late David McCallum this past week with a tribute episode for his character Ducky, but the show’s original star Mark Harmon did not make an appearance.
Michael Weatherly, who played Tony Dinozzo on the long-running CBS series, made a cameo appearance at Ducky’s funeral.
So, why wasn’t Mark back as Gibbs? After the episode’s writer spoke out, the show’s executive producer Steven D. Binder is now sharing his thoughts too.

NCIS said goodbye to the late David McCallum in an emotional tribute episode that saw the surprise return of one character and an update on another.
McCallum passed away in September 2023 at the age of 90 after playing chief medical examiner Ducky for two decades on the beloved CBS procedural drama.
Brian Dietzen, who plays Ducky’s protégé Dr. Jimmy Palmer, wrote the episode, “The Stories We Leave Behind.”
“We wanted to honor a life well-lived, 60 years in this business and 20 years on our show,” Dietzen told USA Today. “This allows fans to grieve with us. We’ve all experienced this loss. Both his TV family and his real family are feeling pain and grief right now. The small comfort all of us can take is David was 90 and lived so many lives to the fullest within those 90 years. He took advantage of every last breath.”
So, how was Ducky written off the show?...

The NCIS tribute to Ducky aired on Monday night, with several surprises for viewers.
The episode paid homage to actor David McCallum and the character he made famous, Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard.
Most NCIS fans had heard David McCallum died during the hiatus between seasons.
The February 19 episode, The Stories We Leave Behind, did well at honoring the character and the man who played him.
Brian Dietzen (Dr. Jimmy Palmer) also wrote the episode, giving it a personal touch that landed well with viewers.
But the tribute episode also referenced many characters from the past, including a guest-starring appearance from Michael Weatherly (Agent Tony Dinozzo).
Did you catch that Gibbs location reference in the episode?
The episode began with Palmer bringing coffee to Ducky’s place. The plan was to discuss a case Ducky was working on, but he passed away in his sleep.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for NCIS Season 21 Episode 2 “The Stories We Leave Behind.”] The NCIS team said goodbye to their beloved colleague and friend Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard in the touching February 19 episode that also honored the late David McCallum, who played the wise medical examiner (and later NCIS historian) beginning in the 2003 series premiere. “The cold open scene where Jimmy comes in and finds Ducky [who has died in his sleep], man, I was just a bucket of tears,” confesses Brian Dietzen, who plays medical examiner Jimmy Palmer, Ducky’s longtime mentee, as part of our aftershow, NCIS: Case Closed. Dietzen co-wrote the episode with NCIS writer Scott Williams. But grieving agents — and fans — got a happy surprise in the episode’s final moments with the appearance of Tony Dinozzo, played by Michael Weatherly, who departed the series in 2016. He showed up to comfort Jimmy. Dinozzo fastening a trademark Ducky bow tie around his friend’s neck ...

Saying goodbye to Ducky was difficult for his colleagues at NCIS and viewers.
The current incarnation of the NCIS Major Crimes Response Team bid farewell to longtime medical examiner Donald "Ducky" Mallard on NCIS Season 21 Episode 2.
But only about half of this squad really knew Dr. Mallard, who started fading into retirement about four seasons ago: Jimmy Palmer (his protege), Kasie Hines (his scribe), and Tim McGee, the only agent to go back nearly as far as he did.
That isn't to say the rest of them didn't know and respect the legend of Ducky. But of those, only Nick Torres and Director Vance had much professional overlap with him.
Otherwise, Ducky was that cool old guy who would stop by and maybe consult when he wasn't busy with a book tour or a teaching job. And let's not forget his official role as NCIS historian, combining two of his passions.

Spoiler Alert! This story contains plot points from Monday’s episode of NCIS.
NCIS on Monday paid its final respects to star David McCallum, who died September 25 at the age of 90.
A fan favorite, McCallum was the last remaining original cast member on NCIS, in which he played an eccentric but highly efficient investigator Donald “Ducky” Mallard for two decades.
As heavily teased in the promos, the episode dubbed “The Stories We Leave Behind” opened with Jimmy Palmer arriving at Ducky’s house to find his mentor — dressed in his monogrammed jammies — dead in his bed, with his sweet corgi looking forlorn in the foyer.

Brian Dietzen’s Jimmy Palmer is now the chief medical examiner on “NCIS,” having taken over that function as the character’s mentor, David McCallum’s Ducky character, slid into an emeritus role a few seasons ago. When McCallum died in September, it fell into Dietzen’s real-life lap to become something of a grief examiner, as he took on the duty of co-writing a farewell salute to Ducky — and to David — along with one of the series’ longtime executive producers, Scott Williams.

NCIS Season 21 began on Monday night without David McCallum.
David had played Dr. Donald “Ducky” Mallard for years but passed away during the hiatus for NCIS.
The first episode of the season was used to wrap up a storyline from last year, but now it is time for the Ducky tribute episode.
Brian Dietzen (he plays Dr. Jimmy Palmer) worked closely with David for years. Their characters also shared many NCIS scenes.
Brian has written NCIS episodes in the past, so it made perfect sense for him to help craft the storylines for a Ducky tribute episode.
NCIS will air the episode on Monday, February 19, and it is intended to honor the character and the man who played him for 20 seasons.
Brian Dietzen talks about penning the emotional episode

When screen legend David McCallum passed away in September, NCIS fans wondered how the show would deal with the sudden departure of his beloved character, Dr. Donald "Ducky" Mallard.
Now we have the beginnings of an answer to that sad question.
The show set the stage for Ducky's departure with the final scenes of NCIS Season 21 Episode 1.
And in the episode set to air on Monday, February 19, the NCIS crew will get the chance to say goodbye to one of their own.
Poignantly, the episode was co-written by Brian Dietzen, who plays Ducky's fellow medical examiner -- and former assistant -- Dr. Jimmy Palmer.
The previous episode concluded with Alden Parker (Gary Cole) receiving an urgent phone call.
We only heard his half of the conversation, but viewers were quick to assume that the call had to do with Ducky.

The early footage is already ramping up the emotional overtones of the night, with some famous faces from the past popping up.
