Homage in film can be a tricky proposition. Hew too close to the original, and you’re just making copies with no new toner; veer too far away and folks will wonder why you bothered. Joe Dante’s Piranha (1978) is that perfect beast then - a Jaws “rip-off” that bows to its source while winking at the audience, and yet still manages to be a wholly separate, wildly entertaining ride.
Released by Roger Corman’s New World Pictures in North America in early August (capitalizing on Jaws’ still undulating waves), Piranha was that rare New World phenomenon: It made some good coin ($16 million worldwide against a $600,000 budget) And was well received by critics. Steven Spielberg himself was so won over by Dante’s take and talent that it led to collaborations on Twilight Zone: The Movie, Gremlins, and other projects. Piranha proves that you can hug someone, slap a “Kick Me” sign on their back,...

If you wish more horror films came with onomatopoetic titles, I’ve got the movie for you.
When Kevin Smith released his now -notorious horror comedy Tusk, many reviewers took issue with the ludicrous premise in which a mad scientist takes it upon himself to transform a man into a walrus. Apparently none of these critics had ever seen Bernard L. Kowalski’s 1973 horror film Sssssss—new to Blu-ray from Scream Factory—because if they had, they might have recognized that the premise of Smith’s movie had been covered nearly 30 years earlier, only with a snake instead of a walrus. It is, to put it bluntly, not a very good movie. But it is a weird one, and sometimes “weird” counts.

There aren’t a lot of horror and sci-fi titles arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this Tuesday (there are four, to be exact), but the few we do have to look forward to are an eclectic and entertaining bunch nonetheless. Scream Factory is giving HD overhauls to both Death Becomes Her and the cult classic Sssssss this week, and Christmas is coming a bit early this year by way of Michael Dougherty’s Krampus, which hits Blu-ray and DVD on April 26th. Our last release for this week is a pair of 1970s underground classics, Crypt of the Living Dead and House of the Living Dead, which arrive together on DVD courtesy of Vinegar Syndrome.

'Jurassic World' velociraptor kicks Iron Man ass at worldwide box office. 'Jurassic World' officially surpasses 'The Avengers' at worldwide box office Directed by Colin Trevorrow; starring Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Vincent D'Onofrio; and co-executive-produced by Steven Spielberg, Jurassic World has officially become the third biggest worldwide box office hit in history. The Jurassic Park sequel – or reboot, as it's basically the same story with a slightly different twist – has surpassed Marvel's Joss Whedon-directed all-star superhero flick The Avengers, which broke box office records back in 2012. Of course, "officially" just ain't what it used to be – like, in the days before The Fall. So you wisely ask, "But which movie has actually sold the most tickets?" After all, that's the true measure of a film's popularity. Well, that's a tough one to answer without the studios providing accurate, precise numbers. And that's not about to happen. It always...

Maria and the von Trapp family are together again! Julie Andrews, Christopher Plummer and about half of the von Trapp children reunited on Thursday night in Hollywood for the 50th anniversary screening of "The Sound of Music," held at the Tcl Chinese Theater as part of the 2015 TCM Turner Classic Film Festival. While we all got to see Julie during the Oscars -- where she thanked Lady Gaga for her performance of a melody of songs from the musical -- it was great to see her alongside Captain von Trapp once again. The duo were joined on the red carpet by Kym Karath (Gretl), Heather Menzies (Louisa) and Debbie Turner (Marta). Unfortunately, none of the Von Trapp boys were in attendance. Other flashback stars in the audience included Jan and the T-Birds from "Grease," Zach Galligan from "Gremlins" and "Heidi" herself, Jennifer Edwards. The film opened 50 years ago earlier this...

In this day of remakes and re-imaginings, this little anomaly would be anything but unusual. However in 1995, this was a strange curiosity, that was brought into existence for no particular reason that I know of. It was a made as TV movie for the Sci Fi Channel (Yep, that’s the old school spelling back in ’95) when it was still trying to find its niche. Then only three years old, the Sci Fi Channel was more than likely showing reruns of cult favorite tv shows, and had not tapped into the fertile ground of the nouveau B movie that it is now famous for.

In the late 1970s, Universal Television optioned the rights to make TV shows based on characters from the Marvel Comics library, and created a number of pilots based on heroes such as the Hulk, Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. In retrospect, The Incredible Hulk was by far the most successful of these - it's arguably still the definitive version of the character on screen, outside of last year's Avengers Assemble.

Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close (Warner Bros.) An eleven year-old boy (newcomer Thomas Horn, in an incredible debut) discovers a mysterious key amongst the possessions of his late father (Tom Hanks) who perished in 9/11. Determined to find the lock it matches, the boy embarks on a Picaresque odyssey across New York City. Director Stephen Daldry and screenwriter Eric Roth have fashioned a film both grand and intimate, beautifully-adapted from Jonathan Safran Foer’s novel, thought by most who read it to be unfilmable. Fine support from Jeffrey Wright, Sandra Bullock, John Goodman, Viola Davis and the great Max von Sydow. Also available on Blu-ray disc. Bonuses: Featurettes. Widescreen. Dolby and DTS-hd 5.1 surround.
Battle Royale: The Complete Collection (Anchor Bay) Adapted from Koushun Takami’s polarizing novel (compared by champions and detractors alike as a 21st century version of A Clockwork Orange) and set in a futuristic Japan,...

The 1977 science-fiction action-adventure TV show Logan’s Run was inspired by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson’s 1967 novel and its subsequent 1974 movie adaptation.
The television series spins a tale about a post-apocalyptic 24th century where the planet’s remaining inhabitants live a life of total bliss in an isolated domed city until their 30th birthday, when they are promised the possibility of a renewed life but are in actuality put to death.
The series stars Gregory Harrison (TV’s Trapper John, M.D.), Heather Menzies (The Sound of Music), Donald Moffat (A Clear and Present Danger) and Randy Powell (TV’s Dallas).
Though the show ran for only 14 episodes — all of which are included in the Logan’s Run: The Complete Series DVD set — the series picked up a sizable cult following.

Yesterday we reported that producer Joel Silver was increasingly confident that the long-gestating Logan's Run remake was getting sorted and indeed headed for the big screen. Today, Deadline is reporting that Warner Bros. may have found a director and star for the project.
According to the site, Nicolas Winding Refn will direct, and reteam with his Drive leading man, Ryan Gosling.
Gosling will potentialy star as Logan 5 (the role played by Michael York in the 1976 adaptation) a police officer called a "Sandman" who, in the futuristic society of the story, is responsible for hunting down "runners"; those who refuse to submit when, at age thirty (21 in the novel), their lives are terminated.
Both the new adaptation and the original 1976 film — which also starred Jenny Agutter, Farrah Fawcett and Peter Ustinov — were based upon the 1967 novel by William F. Nolan and George Clayton Johnson that depicted a dystopic ageist future society.

Growing up, a visit to my grandparents house typically consisted of repeatedly watching Singin’ in the Rain or The Sound of Music. (Those were two of the three VHS tapes they owned; the third was Pretty Woman.) There’s a special place in my heart for the sounds of Captain Von Trapp’s “Edelweiss” (how do you not cry?), and I may have reenacted “So Long, Farewell,” on more than one occasion, so it was great to hear that the Von Trapp family would be reuniting on Oprah for the first time since the filming of their iconic movie musical.

Here’s the thing about Oprah Winfrey. She knows how to suckpeople in. Clearly she’s been building her army of followers for decades—wooingthem with free cars and trips to Australia, tugging at their heartstrings withhuman tragedy, and luring them into her book club.
We admit, we’ve been holdouts—never willing to put her on our daily DVR list. But Oprah rises above the other hosts for one reason—tenacity. Slowly butsurely she captures the stragglers who have managed to elude her net.
So, how is Op finally converting the Passionistas to herfold? How else? Musicals. Today, Lady O is reuniting the cast of The Sound of Music, bringing themtogether for the first time in 45 years.
It may not be surprising that the Von Trapp children willall be present and accounted for (answering to each personalized whistle sound wehope). After all, Oprah doesn’t call...

If anyone has known me for many years, they’ll know that I’m an avid Joe Dante lover. And who can deny that love? From Gremlins to Matinee, to The Howling and The ‘Burbs, nobody has done a better job in contemporary Hollywood genre films and also had a critical following as well. Shout Factory! Has just released his first breakthrough hit, a Roger Corman produced horror comedy that many have passed over as a Jaws ripoff. The film is Piranha.
It’s more than just a simple ripoff. Even Corman himself has said that they couldn’t just use another big sea fish, so instead he opted for the smaller and still deadly piranha. Plus the deaths could be more gruesome and in the year 1978 and the slasher boom about to hit, gratuitous gore was the in thing. But Piranha has something more than many of the ‘animals...
