A self-published novelist is claiming Adam McKay ripped off a book he wrote for his 2021 Netflix movie Don’t Look Up in a new lawsuit.
William Collier claims that in 2007, he wrote a novel called Stanley’s Comet, which was later self-published in 2012. The suit describes Stanley’s Comet as a “dark comedy” about low-level NASA scientists who discover a giant comet hurtling towards Earth, but their attempts to warn the public about the danger are dismissed and downplayed by politicians and media figures.
Collier alleges that McKay had access to his book.

In 2012, William Collier self-published a dark comedy novel called Stanley’s Comet. It focuses on the discovery by a low-level NASA scientist of a giant comet on a collision course with Earth. Initially, the government is skeptical of whether it will make impact but eventually plans a nuclear strike, which, for political reasons, is aborted. In the meantime, the scientist is catapulted into fame as people are divided on whether to take the threat seriously and the wealthy make alternative plans for survival.
Viewers may recognize that plot from Don’t Look Up, according to a lawsuit Collier filed on Wednesday in California federal court against Netflix, Adam McKay and his production company Hyperobject Industries. He accuses them of ripping off his book and says that the works are “strikingly similar” to each other, pointing to McKay receiving a copy of his novel through his manager.

The comedy team known as Please Don't Destroy from recent seasons of "Saturday Night Live" have made quite a splash on the late night sketch comedy show. Acting as what is basically the newest equivalent of The Lonely Island, the trio comprised of Martin Herlihy, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall delivers hilarious pre-recorded sketches, and they're also part of the writing staff. Now, like many "SNL" cohorts before them, Please Don't Destroy is releasing their first movie, and the first trailer has arrived.
Originally intended for theaters, "Please Don't Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain" is coming to Peacock in November instead, probably because the title wouldn't fit on most marquees. But in all seriousness, don't let its streaming destination make you think this movie isn't worth your time. This is the kind of comedy that studios aren't making much anymore, and it likely feels like it's just too much...

Zany comedy is alive and well, thanks to Paul Briganti’s Please Don’t Destroy: The Treasure of Foggy Mountain. Reminiscent of films like Dude, Where’s My Car, Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle, and Rat Race, today’s Please Don’t Destroy trailer finds three losers hoping to make a name for themselves by finally uncovering the lost treasure of Foggy Bottom. Unfortunately for the dim-witted trio, everyone and their grandmother knows about the jackpot and will stop at nothing to claim its prize of a rumored $100 million in spoils.
John Goodman narrates the adventure of Ben, Martin, and John, three childhood friends turned deadbeat co-workers, who fend off hairless bears, desperate park rangers (Meg Stalter and X Mayo), and a hypocritical cult leader (Bowen Yang) in the hopes of finding a priceless treasure, only to discover that finding the treasure is the easiest part of their journey. Keith Richards has never hesitated to call out music he doesn’t like. That includes tunes by The Rolling Stones. The loose-lipped guitarist freely criticized the band’s music, going as far as to call one Stones album garbage. So for Richards to admit Jimmy Miller was the key to The Rolling Stones’ best records is no faint praise.
Keith Richards said producer Jimmy Miller was a key figure in making The Rolling Stones’ ‘best records’
The Rolling Stones spent their early years as a cover band as Richards and singer Mick Jagger developed as songwriters. The pair gave away a top-10 song before their band had a hit, but the Stones eventually became hitmakers with Jagger and Richards leading the way.
Once they found their footing, the Stones had a run of success that would be the envy of all but a few bands. Starting in 1968, they released a...

Charlie Watts successfully drummed with The Rolling Stones for decades. He has received praise for his steady timekeeping and anchoring force in the band’s music. This doesn’t mean that he never faced challenges while recording, though. On one of The Rolling Stones’ most well-known songs, Watts struggled to get it right. He ended up walking out of the recording session, causing a producer to step in and play the part.

Back in 2021, "Saturday Night Live" debuted recorded sketches from the comedy group known as Please Don't Destroy. Having carved out a viral comedy presence on social media, the trio of Martin Herlihy, John Higgins, and Ben Marshall have established themselves as the latest successors to The Lonely Island's game-changing SNL Digital Shorts. Frequently, Please Don't Destroy's sketches have been among the best efforts in each new episode of "SNL," such as the one below featuring Taylor Swift. Beyond that, Herlihy, Higgins, and Marshall have also been responsible for writing plenty of other memorable sketches from the past two seasons.

The upcoming film from Please Don’t Destroy — the comedy trio that broke out online before being picked up by Saturday Night Live to produce the show’s digital shorts — will debut on Universal’s sister streamer Peacock on Nov. 17.
The untitled film was initially planned for a theatrical release on Aug. 18, but that date will now be taken over by R-rated dog comedy Strays. (Strays was previously set to open opposite Transformers: Rise of the Beasts on June 9. It will now open the same weekend as DC superhero movie Blue Beetle.) It is unclear why the Please Don’t Destroy project was moved to Peacock.
Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy, who make up Please Don’t Destroy, wrote and star in the film, which, according to the synopsis, “centers on three childhood friends who live and work together, and question where their lives are headed — if anywhere at all.

Universal Pictures has changed its release plans for its as-yet-untitled buddy comedy from comedians Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy — the SNL writing trio collectively known as Please Don’t Destroy. While the film was previously set to hit theaters on August 18th, it will now debut exclusively on Peacock on November 17th.
Produced by Judd Apatow for Apatow Productions and Jimmy Miller for Mosaic, the film centers on three childhood friends who live and work together, and question where their lives are headed — if anywhere at all. Completely ill-equipped and out of their element, they set off to find a lost treasure rumored to be buried in their local mountains. They subsequently discover that finding the treasure is actually the easiest part of the adventure.

A new buddy comedy from Please Don’t Destroy, the writing trio of “Saturday Night Live” fame, will no longer play in theaters. Instead, the untitled movie will premiere exclusively on Peacock, the streaming service owned by NBCUniversal, on Nov. 17.
Ben Marshall, John Higgins and Martin Herlihy, better known as Please Don’t Destroy, wrote the film, which was produced by Judd Apatow and Jimmy Miller. The story centers on three childhood friends who live and work together. When the threesome decides they don’t like their life trajectory, they set off to find a gold treasure that is rumored to be buried in the nearby mountain. They discover that finding the treasure is actually the easiest part of the adventure.
Universal didn’t give a reason for the move from theaters (it was set to release on Aug. 18) to streaming, but it’s been a tough environment for theatrical comedies.

Judd Apatow returned for a fourth time to host the 75th Annual DGA Awards, where he opened Saturday’s show with yuks about Austin Butler’s voice, the presence of a “F–k Boy Table” and Tom Cruise’s stunts.
Unfortunately, Apatow’s off-color remarks could not be heard outside the Beverly Hilton ballroom. Like previous years, The King of Staten Island director instructed the DGA to cut off the feed from his speech to the press room so he could enjoy “creative freedom,” explained one insider. So Deadline was left to piece together what he said from various tweets.
“We are not even on the radio tonight,” Apatow remarked at the top of his monologue. “This show is being live-streamed to the back of this room. This show is so irrelevant, it’s shocking Elon Musk hasn’t bought it yet.”

Exclusive: As reams of Comic-Con attendees mill around dressed as flesh eaters or take part in zombie-themed events, filmmaker Greg Nicotero and his Monster Agency Productions has teamed with Jimmy Miller’s Mosaic to mount a movie about the making of George Romero’s 1968 film Night of the Living Dead. From unlikely origins and a budget around 115,000, the film hatched the whole zombie genre and is regarded as arguably the greatest horror movie ever.
Nicotero is one of many creatives in film, TV and video games who’ve benefited from Romero’s pioneering in the carnivorous-corpse genre. He has directed 39 episodes of The Walking Dead, including the series finale he’s still finishing. Although he’s got a long list of genre credits, Nicotero actually learned his craft on Romero’s films. They are both from Pittsburgh — and so, for that matter, is Miller — and they all knew each other well.

Amazon Prime Video has canceled “Night Sky,” its science-fiction series starring Sissy Spacek and J.K. Simmons. Amazon Studios and Legendary Television co-produced the series’ first season.
The decision to not move forward with another installment comes about six weeks after the first season premiered all eight of its episodes on the streamer May 20.

Launching to largely positive reviews, the series did not make a significant viewership impact while carrying sizable costs tied to its sci-fi content. But regardless of the cancellation, Night Sky already has secured its place in TV history.
Prime Video, in conjunction with Amazon Web Services, Ses, and Intelsat, beamed the show’s first episode into outer space, marking the farthest distance from earth that a TV series has been distributed and making Prime Video the first streamer to distribute its content directly into space.
