“Breathless” is produced by Montero’s El Desorden Crea and executive produced by Montero and Diego Betancor. David Pinillos and Marta Font shared directing duties, working from screenplays by Montero, Carlos Ruano, Guillermo Escribano, and Pablo Saiz.
Alongside today’s photos, Netflix released a new synopsis for the show: “The Joaquín Sorolla is much more than a public hospital in Valencia where lives are saved every day. We generally prefer to focus on positive things at the start of a new year, but the fact is that every good show must come to an end, and we're about to say goodbye to some truly beloved series in 2024. We've already lost so many shows recently, including NCIS: Los Angeles and Magnum P.I.
But here we are to discuss it some more! Some of the shows on this list are going out on their own terms after long, successful runs. Others are being unceremoniously kicked to the curb due to low ratings, massive budgets, or departing stars.
One thing they all have in common? Their loss will really sting.
But one they all have in common is that they're shuffling off the airwaves sometime within the next 12 months, so join us as we bid farewell to the following series from across the TV landscape.
We can't say we'll miss all of these shows,...

The fictional high school of Las Encinas continues to be a playground for murderous mischief as the Spanish teen drama Elite made its return to Netflix on Oct. 20. Now in its seventh season, the series has added new characters to the salacious mix — Brazilian singer Anitta being among them — and brought back a member of the original ensemble cast, Omar Ayuso, who starred as Omar Shanaa from seasons one through five.
“One day by chance, we were on a train, and I asked him if he would be willing to come back,” says screenwriter, director and producer Carlos Montero, who created the series with Darío Madrona. “We gave him a protagonist role and we felt in debt to Omar because he always pulled out all the stops with our show. We love his character very much and we wanted to give him the importance we think he deserved.”

Omar Ayuso, who shares the same name as his character, is a pillar of the teen telenovela Elite. He’s been around since the first season of Netflix’s Spanish hit, captivating viewers via his tender romance with heartthrob Ander, played by Arón Piper, and the jarring disapproval his character faces in his Muslim household.
Elite, created by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona, premiered its seventh season Oct. 20, with Ayuso reprising his role. The series, which announced an eighth and final season over the summer, marks Netflix Spain’s longest-running fictional series.

Spain’s TV fiction industry is exercising some caution after high-end Spanish-language series lifted off in 2018.
“We all wanted to launch so many projects, so many new platforms arrived that there was no time for analysis,” says Bambú co-founder Ramón Campos.
As streamers scale back on originals and sales cycles slow, the industry has time for larger re-calculation.
“We come from a spectacular moment, in terms of both quality and volume,” says Sonia Martínez, series editorial director at Buendía Estudios.
That groundbreaking moment, championed by series like “Money Heist” and “Elite,” propelled Spanish fiction production to historic heights of global popularity.
“There is a virtuous circle that began in 2018 and has been continuously regenerating. Spain’s talent base already interests international audiences,” says María Valenzuela, Movistar Plus Intl.’s general manager.
But the country’s TV production scene is still cycling through the fruits of the boom: the number of...

As other major European broadcasters, Spain’s Atresmedia is making a large bet on its VOD content offer, focused around the high-profile streaming service Atresplayer, which ambitiously re-launches July 5.
Just until a few years ago, European TV giants treated their streaming operations to bedrock linear lineups. Those days have gone. At Annecy, BBC and France Télévisions were talking up their streaming services as their future. ITV and Germany’s Rtl are bowing their biggest plays on Ott operations, Itvx and Rtl+, respectively, powering up strong subscriptions’ hikes.
Belgium’s Vrt currently estimates “almost a 50/50 split” in its acquisitions budget as it focusing on “finding unique series that viewers wouldn’t expect from a public broadcaster for its streaming service,” Sven Van Lokeren, head of international fiction series acquisition at Belgium’s Vrt told Variety at February’s London TV Screenings.

The news was unveiled by Verónica Fernández, Director of Series for Spain and Portugal at an event to mark the expansion of the streamer’s production hub in Tres Cantos, Madrid.
Netflix has been available in Spain since 2015. The streamer’s Tres Cantos campus opened in 2019 and has since doubled its stage capacity and now features ten sets and a multi-purpose space that includes the company’s first in-house post-production facility.

Jordan Cahan and David Caspe, creators of Showtime’s dark period comedy “Black Monday,” were watching the 1987 Charlie Sheen headliner “Wall Street” when they realized that there was no limit they could reach in a fictional playground of deep pockets.
“Michael Douglas won a best actor [Oscar] for this movie that was billed as a drama, yet his character has a robot butler and he says things like, ‘Lunches are for suckers!’” Cahan recalls. “Looking back, we immediately were like, ‘This silliness is indicative of that era of excess,’ and we felt like we could make fun of that.”
The selfish, high-stakes world of stockbrokers let Cahan and Caspe stretch how far their characters would be willing to go for money.

Where can Netflix Spain go after hit show “Money Heist”? On Thursday, it unveiled seven new Spanish originals, including “Feria” from “Elite” creator Carlos Montero, that sketch some kind of answer and roadmap for the U.S. streaming giant in one of its European production powerhouses.
Though Netflix in Spain has seen its biggest global hits in two iconic young adult series, “Money Heist” and “Elite,” now, more than ever before, as it transforms into a general entertainment service, the U.S. streaming giant is mixing it up.
The seven new originals, set for release from 2021, run a gamut from Netflix’s first short format series to its most ambitious doc series ever, “800 Meters,” to two features, a standup special and just one drama series.

In Season 3, Spanish teen drama series “Elite” manages once again to give yet another spin to the already genre-blent and bent tropes that have gained it so much popularity amongst international audiences. This time around, as the series unravels a new murder at posh Las Encinas High School as it comes to terms with the fact that its characters and cast are growing. Their conflicts and struggles deepen, as adulthood awaits around the corner.
Darío Madrona and Carlos Montero return as showrunners: the show maintains its strengths, plus high school romance and intrigues, heightened by a violent crime and studded by sex scenes, drug use and class warfare. All underscore the authors’ interest in tackling themes and conflicts that are ultra-contemporary for teenagers and young adults.

Netflix’s announcement of new Spanish series late last month underscored the platform’s intent to diversify its palette in the country while betting once again on one of their own, Carlos Montero. After co-writing “Elite” Season 2, and with a third set soon to bow, Montero has made the jump to the director’s chair for the small-screen adaptation of his novel “The Mess You Leave Behind.”
The novel, which won Montero a Primavera Literature Award, is the story of a lit teacher who takes a substitution position in a small town in the interior of Galicia. She soon finds out that her predecessor, Elvira, committed suicide. But, as Raquel gets more involved with those who knew Elvira, the truth about her death becomes murkier. A thriller unfolds amidst themes of personal lose, grief and guilt.

Great news for “Elite” fans: Netflix has renewed the addictive teen thriller for a third season. Season two dropped only a month ago, but it seems Netflix also just can’t get enough of the series.
Created by Carlos Montero and Darío Madrona, the Spanish-language series follows the misadventures of a group of teens who attend an exclusive private school in Spain called Las Encinas. What seemingly begins as a fish-out-of-water story—as three working-class students end up receiving scholarships to attend Las Encinas—quickly turns into a tale about sex, manipulation, more sex, and eventually murder.
Simply put, “Elite” is a series about horny teens in Spain, and Americans—even outside of your standard horny teens demographic—have eaten it up. In fact, not just Americans: According to Netflix in its first four weeks, “Elite” season one was viewed in more than 20 million homes worldwide. And while some may...

Madrid — Watched by over 20 million household accounts worldwide in its first month, Spanish high school series “Elite” is a striking example of the global potential of Netflix’s drive into local production.
At first glance, targeting a very specific audience, it explores multiple themes through multi-layered character relationships which appeal to far broader demographies.
These come courtesy of two young but seasoned show-runners, Carlos Montero (“Physics or Chemistry”) and Dario Madrona (“Vive cantando”).
After Season 1’s breakout – and now bulwarked for the second by another four writers plus the production values that Netflix brings to the table – they play confidently with both teen drama and procedural tropes, showcasing the new quality standards of Spanish drama series.
“Elite” Season 2 allows for more formal flare and also time to explore in more depth the already established characters.

Madrid —New school term, new mystery. Beautiful young bodies still make out, in ever more surprising combinations, in “Elite” Season 2.
But there are greater depths and ambition to the Netflix Spanish high-school hit, if the first two episodes of Season 2 and a Madrid press conference involving cast and creators are anything to go by.
First details of “Elite” Season 2 come as the series has been renewed for Season 3, Diego Avalos, director of originals in Spain, announced at the Thursday presentation.
Season 2 follows a tried and tested flash forward format. In the first season of “Elite” someone is murdered. In Season 2, someone goes missing. As the hours tick by – 36 at least by the end of Ep. 2, – hope of finding them alive plunges dramatically.
That set-up gives the suspense thrust to “Elite” Season 2, the Spanish teen crime/social thriller which, produced once more by Zeta Audiovisual, bows on Netflix worldwide on Sept.

Blair Waldorf may have navigated sex scandals clad in Coco Chanel in “Gossip Girl,” but she never spent her nights swiping on Grindr, like “Euphoria’s” Jules (Hunter Schafer). Teen drama has permeated TV for more than 30 years and writers have always dramatized teenager turmoil in a way that’s arguably more sophisticated than what most of their real-life pimply counterparts can relate to. But now, television writers and producers are tackling a whole new generation (Gen Z), tasked with depicting scenarios for which they have no personal frame of reference.
“We’re just really trying to start from understanding these characters on an emotional and cellular level, and trusting that the trappings of today’s times will work themselves out as we bring these characters to life,” says former “Gossip Girl” executive producer Josh Schwartz, who now executive produces Gen Z series “Looking for Alaska” and “Marvel’s Runaways” for Hulu.
