Spoiler Alert: This story discusses plot elements from “The Idea of You,” which is now streaming on Prime Video.
“Don’t you miss those bombastic, blown out pop choruses of the 2010s?” asks Savan Kotecha, the executive producer behind the music of August Moon — the fictional boy band at the center of “The Idea of You,” a new romance film on Prime Video based on a novel by Robinne Lee.
Nicholas Galitzine plays Hayes Campbell, the lead singer of August Moon, who falls in love with an older woman and single mother Solène (Anne Hathaway) after she brings her daughter to the group’s meet-and-greet at Coachella.
Galitzine first showed signs of vocal prowess when he played Prince Charming opposite Camila Cabello in the 2021 movie musical remake of “Cinderella.” But on “The Idea of You,” Galitzine pushes his boundaries, undergoing boy band bootcamp: lessons from Eric Vetro, vocal coach to Ariana Grande,...

Maya Rudolph is latest star to weigh in on the nepo baby debate.
If you didn’t know, the 51-year-old Emmy-winning actress’ famous parents are musician and songwriter Richard Rudolph and the late singer-songwriter Minnie Riperton, who was best known for her 1974 song “Lovin’ You.”

Keep reading to find out more…“They were musicians. They weren’t actors,” Maya shared on the Armchair Podcast.
“My trajectory was, I wanted to go to New York, and I wanted to be on Saturday Night Live,” Maya explained. “I understand that drive to be somewhere else — forage in a new city and create my own path. But that’s a huge undertaking. I wasn’t like, ‘Oh my dad writes songs, that’s gonna make me a comedian.’ There was no direct line. I knew I had to get there myself.

A version of this response appeared on the Black Rock Coalition’s website.
When Rolling Stone co-founder Jann Wenner made offensive comments in The New York Times about women and Black artists, the Black Rock Coalition, which has battled stereotypes and musical categorizations about what rock is “supposed to be” since 1985, felt obligated to speak out and condemn his misogynistic and racist statements. While we were among many organizations and individuals to call out Wenner, he also had a number of supporters, citing his contributions to popular culture and to the world of music journalism.

Ana de Armas paid her respects to Marilyn Monroe more than once while appearing as the Hollywood icon in Blonde.
The 34-year-old Cuban-Spanish actor stars in the new Netflix movie based on Joyce Carol Oates’ novel of the same name.
In a new interview with Variety, de Armas said that she struggled to move on from the role after filming wrapped.
“I couldn’t say goodbye,” she said. “I couldn’t shake it off. I couldn’t let her go. I went to visit her at her cemetery a few times – I would have liked to go one more time.”
Monroe is buried at Pierce Brothers Westwood Village Memorial Park and Mortuary in Los Angeles. It is also the final resting place of many other stars, including the authors Truman Capote and Jackie Collins, actors Jack Lemmon, Burt Lancaster and Natalie Wood, as well as singers Roy Orbison, Minnie Riperton and Dean Martin.

Beyoncé is the dark-mode version of the pop megastar — an upgrade that has now become the norm. The Houston luminary is sleeker, cooler, and Blacker, making everything about the way we viewed things a hot-minute ago seem bland, primitive, and flat-out draining. Indeed, the 28-time Grammy winner may be the only sovereign of pop to have truly evolved artistically while also expanding an enormous commercial empire. Michael Jackson became less cool with each more-ambitious release, going from the effortless elegance of Off the Wall to the forced spectacle of Bad.

There aren’t too many things that terrify Maya Rudolph. The list is basically black widow spiders, stand-up comedy and walking into a roomful of people she doesn’t already know and having to introduce herself.
The first on that list could actually kill her, and the latter two require her to be herself, which is “just so naked and vulnerable,” she says as she forks into a Goop Kitchen salad on an overcast afternoon this spring. It’s fitting, then, that Rudolph has devoted so much of her existence to becoming other people: a collection of divas on Saturday Night Live, the briefly incontinent bride in Bridesmaids, a hormone monstress on Big Mouth and, soon, a billionaire divorcée on the Apple TV+ comedy Loot.

When Minnie Riperton released her debut album, Come to My Garden, in 1970, she decided to make “Les Fleurs” her grand, sweeping introduction to the LP. A lush masterwork arranged by Charles Stephney, the chamber-soul classic starts off with Riperton’s frolicsome vocals. The song blooms into something else entirely the second it dives headlong into ecstatic psychedelic production that surges with sudden power. But despite the strength of the arrangement and the finesse of Riperton’s voice, “Les Fleurs” failed to chart as a single and has often felt like...

Yola first came into the consciousness of most music fans when she was nominated for a best new artist Grammy last year, among four attention-getting nods she picked up. Come 2022, she’s destined to capture the attention of movie fans when she appears in Baz Luhrmann’s untitled Elvis Presley movie. In Australia earlier this year, she filmed her supporting role as Sister Rosetta Tharpe, one of the recognized progenitors of rock ’n’ roll. Yola has a huge amount of empathy for the historic figure she portrays, who is often characterized as a “beloved” pioneer of the genre.
“Not beloved enough, actually, I’d go so far as to say,” she asserts, voice rising with a polite but properly righteous indignation. “If she was as beloved as she should be, she would have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame way before 2018. It would have been decades ago.

The announcement that Maya Rudolph would be joining “Disenchanted” — the sequel to Disney’s 2011 hit “Enchanted” — as a villain was exciting news, if not completely surprising. Rudolph has always had an eye — or more accurately an ear — for how music and comedy can combine. Speaking with Variety as one of 2021’s Power of Women honorees, Rudolph described the link between the two disciplines as having some “magical quality” that work in tandem more often than not.
“I remember a kind of marriage between music and comedy,” she says of her childhood, when she was around plenty of musicians thanks to her mother, the late singer-songwriter Minnie Riperton. “Growing up, I do believe there was much more of an understanding that they were from the same place,” she says. “I didn’t recognize it as a kid, but looking back, I watch some home movies and see my mother playing a show with the Smothers Brothers.

The comparisons being drawn between Them, Amazon Prime’s upcoming terror anthology series and Us, Jordan Peele’s 2019 deadly doppelgangers flick, are inevitable.
Both have pronoun titles, jump scares, and beautiful, dark-skinned actors as the leads. Shahadi Wright Joseph even played a set of doppelgangers in Us and plays Ruby Emory in Them. But the similarities pretty much end there — if you don’t count the use of Minnie Riperton’s “Les Fleurs” in both. Conversely, Them, like HBO’s Lovecraft Country, is set in 1950s Jim Crow America and because of this, the two are also sparking correlations on social media.

There are seven episodes in “Lost Notes: 1980,” the latest season of the Kcrw podcast series looking at the stories behind songs and artists that range from household names to less familiar figures and moments in the music world. All seven of these latest chapters, hosted by writer and poet Hanif Abdurraqib, were released at the same time.
Aside from giving the chance for listeners of the show to experience these stories from four decades past in full, Abdurraqib explains that dropping the whole season at once came from a desire for the season to have a rhythm and shape akin to an album.
“We kind of agonized over the order,” Abdurraqib told IndieWire. “I assume people will listen to the whatever one interests them first. But there are some that create bridges between each other. The Minnie Riperton one flows kind of seamlessly with the Grace Jones one — Disco Demolition...

It's safe to say that everyone's spirit could use a recharge during these trying times. Enter Ari Lennox, who teamed up with Hamilton's Anthony Ramos to deliver a soulful rendition of Sly & the Family Stone's 1973 hit "If You Want Me to Stay." The cover, which dropped on Sept. 3, features Lennox and Ramos encapsulating the tune's funk-infused flair with their smooth vocals and buoyant chemistry. The collaboration is part of a partnership between The Main Street Alliance and Crown Royal, who launched a national relief campaign to help bars, stages, and clubs at risk of shutting down due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Proceeds raised from every stream of Lennox and Ramos's "If You Want Me to Stay" will be donated to the fund. In an interview with Popsugar, Lennox opened up about taking on the inspiring project, working with Ramos, and staying in tune with her creativity while social distancing.

In a first for The Voice, Tuesday’s Semi-Final Results Show advanced to the finale the top vote-getter from each of Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson, John Legend and Nick Jonas’ teams as opposed to the top four vote-getters overall. The remaining five singers then competed for Season 18’s last Instant Save.
Having a Final Five instead of a Final Four seemed fine to me — anything that gives us more of the contestants to whom we’ve gotten attached. But I didn’t see why there had to be one from each team. If one coach’s team is stronger than...

If there were an award for music supervisor of the year, Jordan Peele himself would already strongly be in the running. The filmmaker took on the role himself for his new horror-thriller, “Us,” although there’s no such credit in the end titles, since the writer-director-producer didn’t necessarily need to become any more of a multi-hyphenate than he already is. If, in years or decades to come, you can’t listen to a certain Beach Boys song without flinching, or a particular N.W.A number without laughing, Peele is the man to credit or blame.
[Spoiler alert: While the following article doesn’t get deep into plot points, discussing music choices does involve revealing a couple of the movie’s best jokes, so if you’re especially averse to humor spoilers, wait until you’ve seen “Us” to read further .]
“Us” makes prominent use of the mid-‘90s hip-hop hit “I Got 5 On It” — as heard in the trailer — in both song form and an eerie instrumental score reprise, as well as key cuts from the present and distant past by Janelle Monae and Minnie Riperton. But the choices that are going to...

Jordan Peele discusses the key role music plays in his new horror film “Us” — as well as the use of music in movie at large — in the first movie-sponsored takeover on Spotify.
Beginning Monday, March 18, the Oscar-winning director-producer-writer will take over Spotify’s TV & Movies hub in a playlist that runs one hour and 50 minutes. In the series, he talks about how he used music for “Us,” along with other surprising uses of music in film. The “Us” soundtrack includes Luniz’s “I Got 5 on It,” Janelle Monáe’s “I Like That,” Koffee’s “Toast,” Minnie Riperton’s “Les Fleur,” and the Beach Boys’ “Good Vibrations,” in addition to the score by Michael Abels (who also scored Peele’s “Get Out”).
Peele’s Spotify takeover is sponsored by “Us” distributor Universal Pictures. The deal marks the first time a single film is taking over one of Spotify’s hubs.

Solange’s When I Get Home, released on Friday, feels both meticulous and off-the-cuff, hyper-melodic for those listeners enticed by the Seventies references on 2016’s A Seat at the Table, but also attuned to the short track-lengths and loop structures favored by today’s young streamers.
Solange oversaw the making of the album with scrupulous care, starting in Houston and then continuing later in sessions in Los Angeles and Jamaica. “The best [approach] for me is to invite people into the space and say ‘do you,'” the star explained during...

We are no strangers to Ariana Grande's impressive vocal range, and the "7 Rings" singer is back at it again with an all-time classic. In a video posted to her Instagram on Friday, Ariana covered a segment of Minnie Riperton's soulfully sweet 1974 "Lovin' You" in front of a group of backup dancers who could not handle her incredible whistling high note. Even though she couldn't stop smiling and laughing the entire time, Ariana hit every single note and left us wanting an entire album of classic covers. While we already know Ariana is a queen when it comes to showcasing her vocal talents, this sweet throwback song is just proof that she continues to blow us all away.

Stevie Wonder wanted to meet Tonto. He had just turned 21, was flush with cash and had all these songs and sounds in his head that he couldn’t get onto tape. A friend had loaned him a copy of an album called Zero Time that had been recorded using the world’s largest, most advanced music synthesizer: Tonto, an acronym for “The Original New Timbral Orchestra.”
The mastermind behind Tonto was an Afro’d, English bassist-turned–studio tech named Malcolm Cecil who lived above a midtown-Manhattan advertising recording studio. ““I...

Long before Maya Rudolph became a star in her own right, she was famous. The daughter of soprano Minnie Riperton (best known for her No. 1 hit "Lovin' You") and composer Richard Rudolph, Maya was just a child when her mother died of cancer in 1979. "When I was a kid, and people would come up to me or stare at me because of my mom, I didn't like it. I really didn't like it. I used to think, 'Oh, they're staring at my hair, because it's so big and ugly.' Because I didn't realize people were just staring at my mother, like, 'Wow, that's her daughter!'" the actress says. "I didn't know; I was a kid. And kids always personalize things." "For many,...

The Scottish band has just teased the upcoming video for the song, which was directed by Kristen Stewart. The actress broke the news about this collaboration during an interview with The New York Times last month.
“I had been asking them to let me do something for them for a while,” Stewart told the Times of the pop trio. “They’re so good. I ended up with a pretty simple but definitive narrative arc that highlights the cause in a sweet but quiet and confronting way.”

On Tuesday's episode of Finding Your Roots, "In Search of Freedom," Henry Louis Gates Jr. goes into the ancestral lineages of three black celebrities: Keenan Ivory Wayans, Shonda Rhimes, and Maya Rudolph. Rudolph is notably the daughter of a show-business union between black singer-songwriter Minnie Riperton and white producer-composer Richard Rudolph. "I have this thing where I just feel I can be anyone," she says on the episode. "I think being mixed, too, I kind of, sort of grew up feeling a little orphaned by the idea of my heritage." Delving into Rudolph's maternal side, Gates is able to identify two of the former SNL star's ancestors, Manuel Grigsby and Mary Thurman, both of whom were born into slavery. Rudolph looks at a record of the slaves that the slave-owner John Warren Grigsby owned. There aren't names, but knowing the age, she is able to identify the 5-year-old child as...
