Before returning to the silver screen for Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, Johnny Depp is ready to announce his first directorial effort in 25 years for Modi, a biopic focusing on the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani. Inspired by a play by Dennis McIntyre and adapted for Hollywood by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski, Modi tells the story of the famous painter and sculptor during his time in Paris in 1916.
Riccardo Scamarcio (John Wick: Chapter 2), Pierre Niney (Yves Saint Laurent), and Al Pacino lead the cast, with filming going down in Budapest this fall. The Veterans will bring the project to Cannes for a potential sale.
According to Deadline, Modi chronicles a harrowing 48 hours of Amedeo Modigliani’s life, depicting when he ran from police through the streets and watering holes of war-torn Paris. Bohemians think nothing of Modigliani ending his career prematurely, including French artist Maurice Utrillo, the Belarusian-born Chaim Soutine, and his English muse and lover,...

As a young boy, Dan Lanigan collected “Star Wars” action figures and was interested in how movies were made; now he gets really excited about discovering film artifacts like Mary Poppins’ carpet bag or the prototype Jack Skellington doll.
That’s what makes him the perfect host for Disney Plus’ newest series “Prop Culture,” which takes a look at the stories behind the memorable objects featured in Disney’s most iconic projects. Each 30-minute episode focuses on a single film from the studio’s catalog, including “Tron,” “Mary Poppins,” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” and “Pirates of the Caribbean.”
But Lanigan, an executive producer of 2017’s “Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Return,” isn’t just concerned with examining the hardware; he aims to spend time with those involved in the process of creating it. “I wanted to do as much as I could to help celebrate these people,” he says. “It...

Javier Bardem recently discovered that there is no better time to bring your kids to work than when work is on a life-sized pirate ship.
During filming of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales in Australia, Bardem had his son, Leonardo, 6, and daughter Luna, 3, with wife Penelope Cruz, visit their dad on a day when he was filming scenes aboard massive war ships built for the production.
“That’s one of the reasons why you do it,” Bardem tells People in this week’s issue about taking on the role of vengeful (and undead) villain Captain Salazar.

We're about one month away from the announcement of this year's Honorary Oscar recipients. They're usuallly announced at the end of August for a November Governor's Awards ceremony. This year's ceremony will be on November 12th. Last year rumors circled that it was Doris Day's turn but that didn't turn out to be accurate. For the past two years, The Film Experience has tried to make up for the dearth of movie site reporting about the Oscar Honorary careers (beyond the sharing of press releases / YouTube videos of their speeches) with mini-retrospectives so we're always hoping they'll choose well to give us wonderful careers to discuss right here.
Let's reprint a list of worthies we shared a year or so ago, with a few adjustments, in case any of the elites in the Academy are undecided about who to put forth or get behind for these coveted honors.

Where to start with Penny Rose? Pirates of the Caribbean? Evita? King Arthur? Most recently of course 47 Ronin (directed by Carl Rinsch). You do not hire Penny Rose for something small. This is not to say she won’t work on independent and low budget projects, just that her CV is becoming increasingly packed with huge scale period and/or fantasy studio movies – basically the kind of pictures that would make most costume designers weep. Multiples, armour, uniforms, plus Ms. Rose practically always builds from scratch. Not a fan of ‘shopping’ or even slightly interested in fashion, Penny Rose is old-school hands on, no-nonsense and no fear.
Nonetheless, there is a certain sense of irony in Ms. Rose’s position on contemporary fashion, being as she started her sartorial career working for Elio Fiorucci in Italy, although by her own admission this is mainly because she spoke fluent Italian. On...

With an incredible cast and a budget to match Carl Rinsch’s 47 Ronin boasts a unique take on a traditional Japanese folk tale. Attempting to merge history and fantasy, and loosely based upon the historical event, it opens with a prologue introducing the story and outlining its significance.
The story begins with Kai, a half-Japanese half-English boy running away from something in the forest. Exhausted, he is found with strange claw marks on him by a band of samurai. One young samurai believes the boy to be a demon and attempts to kill him, only to be stopped by Lord Asano who contests that he is human and takes him into his care. Kai is looked after by the Lord’s daughter, Mika, with whom a forbidden relationship begins to blossom. However, as a ‘half-breed’ he is treated as an outcast and shunned despite his courage and honour, with Mika...

On Monday, we took you on the set of "47 Ronin," Universal's great tentpole hope for the Christmas season. Long-delayed (it was originally set for release last November) and with a troubled production history, the film tells the famous Japanese story of the 47 Ronin, former samurai who spent a year planning their revenge on the man who wronged their master, with two major twists: one is that one of their number is Kai, a "half-breed" played by Keanu Reeves, the other is that the vision of first-time director Carl Erik Rinsch was to set the film in "a dream of Japan," with fantastical creatures and heightened action. You can get the skinny on the film from our earlier extensive report, but in our day on set at Shepperton Studios back in June 2011, we had the opportunity to talk not just to Rinsch and Reeves, but also co-stars Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano and Kou Shibasaki,...

‘Who is behind the mask, the observer or the wearer?’ a question posed by milliner Stephen Jones, who created a series of masks inspired by The Lone Ranger to tie-in with the film’s release. It is an interesting idea, that we are hidden from view in a mask yet paradoxically more visible than ever. No-one knows for sure where masks came from. We can trace their existence back to man’s earliest ancestors, but for what purpose? Entertainment? Disguise? Protection? In cinema the mask has become visual shorthand for the hero, or more accurately the superhero. The Lone Ranger spins this notion on its head somewhat, because although the man in the mask, aka John Reid (Armie Hammer) is ultimately the victor, he is at first the fool.

Whether or not you think Catherine Martin has already won this year's Costume Design Oscar - paging pink-suited Jay Gatsby! -- the upcoming battle for Oscar nominations is hardly an easy read even if there are only four spots to sashay towards in your suit & gown finery. Costume Design is my favorite Oscar race outside of all the Actressing, not frequently for what the Academy chooses but for the breadth and depth of the competitive field each year. Here's a few questions I'm already asking myself and by extension, you. So join me in the sartorial contemplation...
Steven Noble's work on "Two Faces of January" looks just divine in stills. How's the film?
This far ahead of the nominations (only 242 days to go!) it's anyone's guess and anyone's game.
Which frequently forgotten designer will finally get the red carpet welcoming committee?
The possible answers are plentiful so let's talk four of them.

Director Carl Erik Rinsch' upcoming 3D fantasy 'samurai' action feature "47 Ronin", stars Keanu Reeeves as an 18th century warrior who seeks to avenge his master’s death.
"47 Ronin", inspired by ancient Japan’s story about the 'Samurai', stars Reeves as 'Kai', an outcast who joins 'Oishi'. the leader of the '47 Ronin'.
"...Together they seek vengeance on the treacherous overlord who killed their master and banished their kind. To restore honor to their homeland, the warriors embark upon a quest that challenges them with a series of trials that would destroy ordinary warriors..."
Production on the film started early in 2012, with the building of sets @ England's Shepperton studio sound stages and backlot, recreating 18th century Japan with a castle, fortress, tournament arena and village.
"Pinewood and Shepperton have seen some relatively big productions come through its gates in recent years, although few rival the scale and ambition of '47 Ronin',...

With the release of Disney/Pixar’s latest adventure Brave (directed by Brenda Chapman and Mark Andrews); featuring colourful tartan cloaks and the Tudor-esque dresses of its heroine Merida (voiced by Kelly Macdonald), it is worth considering exactly what role costume plays in animated film. Does this craft even exist for animation?
Clothes on Film talk exclusively to simulation supervisor for Brave, Claudia Chung, about this process and whether or not costume truly has a viable, practical function outside of live action cinema:
Educated at University of California-Berkeley, Claudia Chung joined Pixar in 2002 after interning for summer in 2001. Her first role was as rendering technical director on Finding Nemo (2003), progressing to simulation and rendering technical director for The Incredibles (2004) and Ratatouille (2007), then as cloth lead on Up (2009). For Brave, her role was to oversee all aspects of grooming, costuming and shot simulation.

A few weeks ago, Clothes on Film were invited to spend a day at Angels the costumiers. We had a private tour of their hire warehouse, watched tailors and dressmakers at work, then interviewed creative manager Jeremy Angel, son of Chairman Tim Angel about how the business is structured and their plans for future. What we discovered was illuminating. More than just a rental shop for film, theatre and television costume, Angels also provide inspiration to the fashion industry.
Angels was established by Morris Angel in the Seven Dials region of London as a used clothing store in 1840, essentially selling tailors’ samples and excess stock. If Johnny Depp’s costume and makeup in the just-released first look at The Lone Ranger looks a little over the top, that shouldn't come as a huge surprise. After all, he’s working with his Pirates of the Caribbean costume designer Penny Rose, who worked on all four Pirates movies (Curse of the Black Pearl in 2003, Dead Man’s Chest in 2006, At Worlds End in 2007, and On Stranger Tides in 2011). Photos: The Lone Ranger and Tonto Through the Years To say the actor and the costume designer have a very good rapport would be putting it mildly. It was Rose who

Disney's biggest gamble of 2013, Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger, has officially gone into production. There was a point I didn't think this movie would actually happen, but here it is. Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer will lead the pack of actors into the wild west.
The reason I say this movie is a gamble is because Disney is spending $216 million dollars to make the movie, and no Western in the history of cinema has ever made that much money. The highest grossing western of all time is Dances With Wolves, and that only brought in $184 million. I can't believe Disney is pumping this kind of money into a western, because I don't think it's going to make that kind of money back in theaters. Hell, Favreau's Cowboy & Aliens only made a little over $100 million and that mixed both sci-fi and western elements! That should have been a blockbuster, and it wasn't.

Disney's new adaptation of The Lone Ranger has had some rough times getting off the ground. From budget issues, to script rewrites, to even losing a cast member or two, it's been an ordeal that nearly killed the film. It's been getting on track however, and has now officially started filming.
Disney sent out this press release just a little bit ago announcing that production on The Lone Ranger has officially started. On top of that it also reveals a more full cast list, but still skips out on any real details about the story. After a rather bumpy road to get there, we’ve just been informed by Disney that their new joint venture with Jerry Bruckheimer ‘The Lone Ranger’ has gone into production today. The movie is set to be directed by Gore Verbinski and stars Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Tom Wilkinson, William Fichtner, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale and Helena Bonham Carter.
The script is penned by Ted Elliott & Terry Rossio of “Pirates of the Caribbean,” Eric Aronson and Justin Haythe.
More as we get it but the full info is below for your viewing pleasure. Excited to see this one but that’s probably just because it’s a ‘Jerry’ movie. Please let it be better than Prince of Persia and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice!
Official press release below.

Would you look at that, I was waiting for the Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) to announce their winners because I thought it would help me in deciding whether I wanted to predict Hugo or The Artist would win the Oscar for Best Costume Design. But I was so caught up in the battle among the front-runners that I overlooked the fact the craft awards don't always go to the favorites and the Cdg now gives us good reason to go against the tide. Even when Madonna's latest directorial effort was getting slammed by critics at the Venice Film Festival last year one aspect of the film even the harshest of critics refused to show resentment toward were Arianne Phillips' costumes. Tonight the Cdg felt her work was worthy of recognition as W.E. was named for Best Costumes in a Period Film beating out fellow Oscar nominees The Artist,...

It’s been all go with award nomination announcements for costume design over the past two weeks. Here is our round-up of the big three: BAFTA, Cdg and Oscar.
First up the BAFTA (British Academy of Film & Television Arts) Film Awards:
The Artist – Mark Bridges
Hugo – Sandy Powell
Jane Eyre – Michael O’Connor
My Week with Marilyn – Jill Taylor
Tinker, Tailor, Solider, Spy – Jacqueline Durran
Perhaps the most surprising nomination, even though it shouldn’t be, is Jacqueline Durran for Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy. Overruling the costumers’ chapter vote for Anonymous (Lisy Christl), general voters chose Tinker, Tailor instead – and with good reason. Critic Guy Lodge goes into detail about the film’s costumes in this article, so we’ll not tread on his toes. One...

The Costume Design Guild has spoken! As with all guild awards... it's a combination of "Really?" and interesting "Oh, yeah!" choices.
Clothes Horse Royals in "W.E." via Arianne Phillips
Period Films
Mark Bridges for The Artist
Michael O'Connor for Jane Eyre
Sharen Davis for The Help
Sandy Powell for Hugo
Arianne Phillips for W.E.
Good news: I have an interview coming up with Arianne Phillips, who is one of my heroes. And not just because she's worked with Madonna for 15 years or so.
Notable Omissions: Anonymous, Captain America (unless they considered it a fantasy), My Week With Marilyn, A Dangerous Method, and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy.
Oscar transferrence? The costume designers within the Academy, a much smaller number than votes on the guild awards, tend to prefer period work to other types of work so you could theoretically see all of these nominees repeat at Oscar, though Phillips is certainly...

As the final guilds begin weighing in before Tuesday's Oscar nominations are announced, the Costume Designers Guild (Cdg) has announced their nominees in three motion picture categories and the only film among my current predictions in the category not included is Sonia Grande for Midnight in Paris. Looking over the last couple years of nominations from the Cdg it looks as if the last three years have always delivered one film that ended up nominated for an Oscar that was not nominated by the Cdg. Could Midnight in Paris be that one? I do have Arianne Phillips just below the bubble line for her work on W.E. as well as Sharen Davis for her work on The Help. As a result of these nominations and just the shift I feel in the winds, I have updated my predictions for Best Costume ever so slightly, which is to say Jane Eyre...

Starring: Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush
This fourth entry into the Pirates of Caribbean franchise is frustrating, dark (literally) and only occasionally thrilling. For the reason a Pirates movie normally redeems itself, this one fails; Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow has finally become the irritating wiseass who just won’t leave the party.
Early on, Jack is a lovingly familiar presence. Following a pursuit through 18th century London, he sheds his recognisable silhouette of billowing linen-silk tweed coat, stripping to an equally billowing linen shirt. As most of the film is set on land, costume designer Penny Rose has ensured he is more rock ‘n’ roll pirate adventurer than rock ‘n’ roll pirate in search of a ship. When Johnny Depp walked out onto the sea-blue carpet under the atrium of London’s Westfield, I wouldn’t have batted an eyelid if the ceiling of the shopping centre had blown off, so loud were the screams and chants.
Earlier in the day at the press conference, when iconic producer Jerry Bruckheimer was asked if this fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie would be followed by a fifth, he replied: ‘ I think it all depends on how the audience embraces this one. We’ve done the movie, we had a blast making it and if everyone enjoys it as much as we do then hopefully we’ll get the whole team back together and do another.’ Judging by the UK premiere reception received by Depp and his co-stars, Penelope Cruz, Ian McShane and Geoffrey Rush, no-one wants to enjoy this latest movie, On Stranger Tides, more than the fans of Captain Jack Sparrow.

Here is something irresistible for fans of British costume design in film: Dressing the Stars, an exhibition of largely Oscar winning pieces from some of the most famous designers in the business, including Jenny Beavan’s recent work on The King’s Speech.
The exhibition will take place at the Fashion Museum in Bath, running from 12th July – 29th August. Emphasis is predominantly, though hopefully not exclusively, on period and fantasy. Expect to see Orlando Bloom’s costume from the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy (designer Penny Rose), Gwyneth Paltrow’s from Shakespeare in Love (Sandy Powell), Meryl Streep’s from The French Lieutenant’s Woman (Tom Rand), Keira Knightley in The Duchess (Michael O’Connor), among many others.
Exhibition curator Yvonne Hellin-Hobbs explains her idea:

The exhibition will take place at the Fashion Museum in Bath, running from 12th July – 29th August. Emphasis is predominantly, though hopefully not exclusively, on period and fantasy. Expect to see Orlando Bloom’s costume from the original Pirates of the Caribbean trilogy (designer Penny Rose), Gwyneth Paltrow’s from Shakespeare in Love (Sandy Powell), Meryl Streep’s from The French Lieutenant’s Woman (Tom Rand), Keira Knightley in The Duchess (Michael O’Connor), among many others.

Though I was about to pronounce 2011 unusually sequel-infested, it might not be much different than any other year. Perhaps it's just the Animated Feature category that has made it feel that way with so many high profile continuations. The difference might just be in how much it seems to be confusing the Oscar Prediction Process. Generally speaking in The Academy's 83 year history, they haven't been much for remakes and sequels and long running series. But times they are a-changing and have been since oh... Star Wars? You can't really stay totally immune to the repetitive charms of franchises if 65% of the movies released are series of some sort, as if the cinema were just one giant television and we all eagerly awaited the next episode of Fill in the Blank: The Further Adventures of That Pt.3.
