Danette Herman was one of the key staff members of the Academy Awards ceremonies from the 1970s into the 2010s, beginning as a production assistant and rising through the ranks to become the show’s executive in charge of talent and coordinating producer. One of the few women to serve in key positions at the Oscars, she was with the show during the years of its highest ratings and largest cultural impact.
As the Academy prepares for the 95th Oscars ceremony, Herman asked TheWrap if she could share some memories of past shows, from an encounter with Katharine Hepburn in 1974 to a pair of anniversary shows in which she assembled historic groups of past winners. —Steve Pond

Comic book collectors of the 1990s remember one particular pop culture milestone well. DC Comics, in one of the best-publicized comic book events ever, advertised that Superman -- the stalwart central figure of the entire genre -- was going to die. Television news reports covered the event, and fans were interested in the character like never before. Comic book stores had lines around the block to pick up a copy of Superman #75, which came sealed in a black plastic bag emblazoned with a dripping, bloody Superman symbol. A new monster, Doomsday, was invented to kill Superman, and the Man of Steel was punched to death. Although DC always had a plan to resurrect Superman, readers in 1992 felt that his death might actually be permanent.
However, in the brief period after Superman's death, and prior to his resurrection, DC Comics introduced four new Superman replacement characters. There was a robotic, sunglasses-wearing death bot called The Eliminator.

HBO has such sights to show you... Last summer it was revealed that a Hellraiser TV series was in development with producers Roy Lee (It) and Dan Farah (Ready Player One) attached. While the series didn't have a network to call home then, it certainly does now, as Deadline reports that HBO has "made a deal" to create a Hellraiser series.
Deadline also reveals that David Gordon Green (2018's Halloween) will direct "the pilot and several more initial episodes" of the Hellraiser series, with Mark Verheiden and Michael Dougherty on board as writers for the new show.
Green, Verheiden, and Dougherty will also executive produce the series alongside Lee, Farah, Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman, Rough House Pictures' Danny McBride, Jody Hill, and Brandon James, as well as Eric Gardner of Panacea Entertainment.
Rather than a remake, Deadline reports that the series will be an "...elevated continuation and expansion of the well-established Hellraiser mythology.

HBO is in the market to raise Hell.
The network is currently developing a series based on the “Hellraiser” film franchise, which in turn was based on Clive Barker’s novella “The Hellbound Heart,” Variety has confirmed.
The prospective series will not be a reboot of “Hellraiser,” but rather “an elevated continuation and expansion” of its mythology, according to sources with knowledge of the project.
Mark Verheiden and Michael Dougherty are writing the project, while David Gordon Green, whose credits include “Halloween” and whose longstanding relationship with HBO extends to “Eastbound & Down,” “Vice Principals” and “The Righteous Gemstones,” is attached to direct several episodes.
This new project is unrelated to the big screen “Hellraiser” revival from “Dark Knight” writer David S. Goyer, which was announced at Spyglass Media Group almost a year ago.

WarnerMedia is diving full-bore into the streaming wars with HBO Max — a subscription service slated to bow next spring, stocked with HBO programming, original series, Warner Bros. movies and library content including the full 10-season run of “Friends.”
There’s no pricing info yet for HBO Max, nor is it fully clear how much content from HBO will be included in the subscription VOD package. The standalone HBO Now service currently costs $15 per month, so presumably HBO Max will cost more if it includes big chunks of what’s on HBO plus a slew of other content.
WarnerMedia says it expects HBO Max to have 10,000 hours of premium video content at launch. On Tuesday, it outlined some of the key shows that will be available.

With more and more film franchises being reimagined as TV series, it’s not surprising to learn that the classic horror franchise Hellraiser is going to also be developed as a series.
It producer Roy Lee and Ready Player One producer Dan Farah are teaming up to develop the series which centers around an evil hellish villain name Pinhead. They have teamed up with the rights holders of the property, Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman and Eric Gardner, to make this happen.
According to Deadline, the intention is to “use the mythology established in the movie franchise and the Clive Barker novella The Hellbound Heart as a launch pad for a new series that could be anthology, or a more traditional narrative.”
The first movie told the story of a man “who inadvertently opens a portal to hell when he tinkers with a strange puzzle box he bought during a trip abroad.

We have such sights to show you. Or at least we will, when Hellraiser comes to TV.
Deadline has just announced that the classic Clive Barker horror property will be adapted as a television show. They’re reporting that producers Roy Lee (It) and Dan Farah (Ready Player One) have teamed up with rights holders Lawrence Kuppin, David Salzman and Eric Garden in an attempt to make the franchise the next big thing in horror TV.
The series began in Clive Barker’s disturbing 1986 novella The Hellbound Heart, which tells the tale of Frank Cotton, a hedonist seeking the ultimate erotic experience. To this end, he tracks down a puzzle box known as the Lemarchand Configuration. Solving this puzzle will apparently open a portal to a dimension populated by creatures who can deliver the ultimate sensual experience. Unfortunately for Cotton, though, what lies on the other side are the Cenobites,...

Here's an interesting tidbit buried in a story over on Variety (thanks to DC reader Jinx for pointing it out)! Apparently there's a TV show in the works based upon the hellish antics of everyone's favorite Cenobites and their unlucky puzzle box.
After bankruptcy and the departure of its founder, Rhi Entertainment has rebranded as Sonar Entertainment and tapped Stewart Till as chief executive.
The move, announced Saturday at the MipTV market in Cannes, comes as Sonar tries to expand the scope of its production-distribution business beyond the made-fors that had been the forte of company founder Robert Halmi Sr.
Halmi exited Gotham-based Rhi in February. His son, Robert Halmi Jr., ankled as CEO last July, when Till was tapped as co-interim CEO along with Mike Corrigan and David Salzman.
"Rebranding as Sonar Entertainment represents a fresh start and a solid business strategy for growth and expansion," said Sonar chairman Gabriel de Alba.

Tonight marks the final original episode of MADtv, at least on Fox. The network cancelled the show last December after 14 years on the air but that doesn't mean that the troupe is leaving gracefully.
The oft-ignored late-night comedy show has been a staple of some Saturday night rituals for nearly a generation. Current cast members include Crista Flanagan, Keegan-Michael Key, Bobby Lee, Arden Myrin, Nicole Parker, Johnny Sanchez, Erica Ash, Eric Price, Lauren Pritchard, and Matt Braunger.
This evening's swan song brings back alumni Alex Borstein, Mo Collins, Will Sasso, and Debra Wilson Skelton, and also features comic actor Fred Willard and stand-up comedian Artie Lang. In the spoof of American Idol's fundraising efforts, Willard hosts a telethon called "MADtv Gives Back."
Executive producer David Salzman tells the Daily News, "We tried to come up with a finale that is in keeping with MADtv's irreverent and un-self-serving way of doing things.

Fox announced the cancelation of Mad TV. The series lasted an impressive 14 seasons but had suffered season-to-season ratings declines for a while now so the news came as no surprise.
"There's been great interest in recent years," executive producer David Salzman told Variety. "We've had a number of networks inquire as to whether the show was coming off Fox and saying that they'd be interested. We have not started to talk to them yet, but now is the time to begin those conversations. I think we have real prospects, but you never know, especially given the economy."
The announcement came Wednesday, allowing the produces to plan to wrap production of the shortened season in December. "This will give us a proper sendoff, a chance to promote the finale and bring back old cast members," Salzman said.
"They said it was too expensive for a daypart where dollars have been shrinking,...

Fox is pulling the plug on Mad TV after 14 seasons. The network confirmed Wednesday that the Saturday night sketch series, which had barely escaped cancellation in recent years, will end its run at the end of this season. According to producer David Salzman, production on Mad TV, which received a shortened order this season, was set to wrap by December. The net decided to inform the show's producers of its decision now, rather than in May, in order to give them a chance to end the series with a bang. Salzman said he plans on shopping the show to other broadcast or cable outlets, and look at ways to modify production and bring down costs. In related Saturday night sketch comedy news, Saturday Night Live has expanded its cast. Abby Elliott, the daughter of comedian Chris Elliott, and Michaela Watkins have joined the comedy series, on the heels of Amy Poehler...

After 14 years on the air, Fox is pulling the plug on its late-night Saturday TV show, MADtv. Though the sketch series has had a very respectable run on the network, producers aren't ready to give up on the show just yet.
Fox's answer to NBC's Saturday Night Live (SNL), MADtv began airing on October 14, 1995. The show features topical sketch comedy as well as popular musical performances. Taking its initial inspiration from the long-running Mad magazine, the series' material includes movie and TV show parodies, music video spoofs and, early on, animated Spy vs Spy segments.
MADtv's ensemble of comedy players has included performers like Michael McDonald, Debra Wilson, Aries Spears, Mo Collins, Bobby Lee, Nicole Sullivan, Alex Borstein, Will Sasso, Stephnie Weir, Frank Caliendo, Phil Lamarr, Ike Barinholtz, Nicole Parker, Keegan Michael Key, and Jordan Peele.
The series is currently a production of Qde, a joint venture of David Salzman...
