Detective thrillers have always had one foot in the horror genre, often starring morally complex investigators forced to confront the nastiest facets of the human condition while hunting down rogue killers. Naturally, these hard-boiled yarns are as common as they are popular, and it takes a special kind of storyteller to extract a meaningful experience from such familiar tropes.
While he’s mostly known for his multi-million dollar epics, I’d argue that Christopher Nolan is one of these rare talents, with the British director starting out his career with a compelling trio of down-to-earth thrillers that culminated in 2002’s Insomnia – arguably the filmmaker’s most underrated film. And with Nolan back in the spotlight after miraculously turning an R-rated biopic into a bona fide blockbuster event, I thought that this might be a great opportunity to look back on the filmmaker’s first studio-backed project.

Who are these characters? Why should we care about them, or at least care enough to spend two hours with them? These are fundamental questions any filmmaker should start with before endeavoring to make a film. And, yet it’s these very questions that director Nora Fingscheidt and her three screenwriters Peter Craig, Hillary Seitz and Courtenay Miles never seemed to have answered before they began work on the new Sandra Bullock starring Netflix film “The Unforgivable.”

Healing the emotional wounds in the present day from the missteps of the past is part of the taxing bliss found in Nora Fingscheidt‘s sophomore feature. A Netflix project penned by three scribes and adapted from TV series, The Unforgivable attempts to classify the human condition through ethical choices — with Sandra Bullock becoming the whipping girl put into submission. Netflix released the film theatrically for two weeks before putting this on their platform December 10th, 2021.

It’s no surprise that Nora Fingscheidt’s “The Unforgivable” is based on a British miniseries, as this Sandra Bullock ex-con drama about a woman released into the merciless cold of Snohomish, Wisconsin, after a 20-year murder stint is gray enough to seem like it still has one foot planted in Yorkshire. What is surprising, however, is that the ITV show had a cumulative runtime of only 135 minutes, a curious factoid when you consider that Fingscheidt’s version — a Netflix movie which runs just 21 minutes shorter than its source material — is so patchy and spread thin that you’d sooner guess it was trimmed down from a sprawling eight-hour epic.

Oscar winners Sandra Bullock and Viola Davis headline the all-star cast of Netflix’s “The Unforgivable,” the streaming service’s latest high-profile release with 2022 awards aspirations. A new trailer for the project was released on Tuesday.
Based on the 2009 British television limited series “Unforgiven,” the new film stars Bullock as Ruth, an ex-convict recently released from prison after serving 20 years for killing police officers in cold blood. Out of jail and trying to piece her life back together, Ruth attempts to reconnect with her younger sister after two decades while also facing repercussions from society for her crimes.
“There are several people whose lives she affected by this crime she committed, and there’s a lot of hatred and anger and bitterness and sorrow associated with her release,” Bullock told Entertainment Weekly earlier this year. “She wants to find this one person, the only family she had when she went in,...

Ben Affleck is set to star in a new film called Falling to Earth, which is an adaptation of a novel written by Kate Southwood. The story is based on the 1925 Tri-State Tornado, which is said to be the deadliest tornado in U.S. history.
The story is set in Marah, Il, which is completely leveled. “Hundreds are dead, injured or homeless and all structures and homes are destroyed with one exception — Paul Graves and his family — who end the day with everything they had at the beginning, their home, business and children.”
Affleck plays Paul Graves in the film and the story follows him and his family “in the days and months that follow as they come to terms with their fate and the stark contrast of their neighbors.”

One of the most anticipated films of 2017 was Christopher Nolan‘s “Dunkirk,” a World War II epic that is nothing like others that the acclaimed auteur has ever attempted before. With a cast that included Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy and One Direction’s Harry Styles, “Dunkirk” received glowing notices from many American film critics, placing it squarely in the race for the 2018 Oscars.

Ranking Christopher Nolan's filmography is a daunting task: the conspicuous absence of any genuinely bad movies means that you're grading on a much narrower scale than would be the case with many directors.
But with Interstellar released worldwide today (November 7), a film which sees Nolan with a new cinematographer and a newly emotional focus, the time felt right to look back on all nine of his features to date.
Below is our definitive* ranking of Nolan's movies from worst through to best. (*Not in any way definitive, so much as subjective and based on the opinion of this writer alone.)
9. Insomnia (2002)
It's easy to forget that Nolan directed Insomnia at all, and even easier to forget that it was his third film. It feels like the work of a director still in search of a voice, whereas in fact Nolan had made the spectacularly confident, tonally distinctive indie Memento two years prior,...

The third part in our Chris Nolan retrospective. Previously Following Here and Memento Here
The only one of his films that he didn’t write, Insomnia was also Chris Nolan’s first foray into bigger budget major motion pictures. Based on the Norwegian film of the same name, although this wasn’t a shot for shot remake, it still maintained a lot of the original’s themes and plot. Paradoxically, Nolan’s version of Insomnia is actually much better than its source material.
Nolan had a lot of influence in making this his follow on project from Memento, and it is easy to see why, as it is prime material for the young director. The main character loses grip on reality due to lack of sleep (ala the title), women become the catalyst for the plot (Robin Williams murdered out of love, Hilary Swank is a thorn in Al Pacino...

Nicolas Winding Refn, the arty genre director of "Drive," "Bronson" and "Valhalla Rising," is apparently planning a few chess moves ahead. And again, he's dabbling with Hollywood and major studios. The Danish filmmaker, already adapting a remake of "Logan's Run" for Warner Bros. is in talks to direct an adaptation of the graphic novel, "Button Man: The Killing Game" for DreamWorks.
Written by Arthur Ranson and John Wagner (who created the Judge Dredd graphic novel character), "Button Man: The Killing Game" centers on a former mercenary named Harry Exton, who is recruited into a game in which retired soldiers are sponsored by wealthy investors -- called "Voices," because they’re only heard on the telephone -- to face off against each other in fights to the death.
“Moneyball” producer Michael De Luca is one of the men shepherding this project. In development since at least 2008, scribes like Hillary Seitz (“Insomnia,...

Source: /Film Christopher Jonathan James Nolan (born July 30, 1970) is a British-American film director, screenwriter and producer. He received serious notice after his second feature Memento (2000), which he wrote and directed based on a story idea by his brother, Jonathan Nolan. Jonathan collaborated with him on later scripts, including the Batman series and The Prestige. He also collaborated with Wally Pfister, who would photograph all his subsequent films. Next he directed the Hillary Seitz written Insomnia (2002), and then pitched an idea for a reboot of the Batman film franchise to Warner Brothers, eventually making a successful trilogy. Inception (2010) was an original screenplay by Nolan, a heist film set in the world of "shared dreaming". Nolan co-founded Syncopy Films with his wife, Emma Thomas, and they have produced all his films since The Prestige (2006). Nolan has also worked with screenwriter David S. Goyer, film editor Lee Smith, composers David...

The best thing about Christopher Nolan's Insomnia is that it's a remake that really takes advantage of re-doing an existing story. Without altering the main plot or making significant changes to what happens, screenwriter Hillary Seitz managed to outline a very different movie, with its own theme to explore and its own difficult questions to answer, from the 1997 original of the same name.
This is Nolan's follow-up to his impressive breakout Memento. It's his first big studio film and his first outing with Warner Bros, a partnership that later leads to the rebirth of the Batman franchise and mind-bending sci-fi picture Inception; the latter's theatrical release this week being the primary reason for this Blu-ray release, which comes with a $7.50 coupon for an Inception movie ticket.

Before watching Warner's Blu-ray for Christopher Nolan's psychological thriller Insomnia the only other time I'd seen the film was in 2002 upon its theatrical release. It was touted as being from the director of Memento (a film I loved at that time), it starred Al Pacino and featured Robin Williams in his first of two creepy movie roles of that year. It was a combination of actors and a director that got me interested, but it did very little for me then and it still doesn't move me eight years later.
Adapted from the 1997 Norwegian movie of the same name (buy it here), Insomnia tells the story of Will Dormer (Pacino), a Los Angeles detective under investigation by Internal Affairs as he is sent to the fictional city of Nightmute, Alaska to head the investigation of a local murder case. Stressed due to troubles back home and having a hard...

We now know that the third Batman movie will be out on July 20, 2012. Christopher Nolan has not been confirmed by the studio as returning as writer-director, but that's probably nothing but a formality. It's been quite a decade for Nolan, who outside of two Batmovies and this summer's Inception also directed Memento, The Prestige, and the less-heralded Insomnia, headed for Blu-ray on July 13th.

Former Imagine Entertainment executive Steve Crystal will produce, with Wendy Japhet, Paramount's newly appointed senior vp production, overseeing for the studio. The thriller pitch takes a reverse approach to one of Paramount's hit films from the '80s -- though the studio is attempting to keep the exact details under wraps in order to prevent competitors from stealing the concept.

The network has given a pilot commitment to the show from Alcon Entertainment, which produced the film, and Warner Bros. TV. Hillary Seitz, who penned the Al Pacino starrer, is attached to write and co-executive produce. ER veteran Jack Orman is on board as executive producer/showrunner.
