Films by Charlie Chaplin, Cecil B. DeMille, and Buster Keaton are among the “hundreds of thousands” of books, musical scores, and motion pictures that will enter the public domain on January 1, according to The Atlantic. All of the works were first made available to audiences in 1923, four years before the introduction of talkies. Due to changed copyright laws, this will be the largest collection of material to lose its copyright protections since 1998.
Artists looking to incorporate black-and-white era throwbacks into their modern creations will have lots of new options. The Atlantic consulted unpublished research from Duke University School of Law’s Center for the Study of the Public Domain, which shared with IndieWire a list of 35 films that will soon become available to all.
“Our list is therefore only a partial one; many more works are entering the public domain as well, but the relevant information to confirm this may...

Mark Hamill just made one little girl a Star Wars fan for life.
The actor, who received his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame on Thursday, alleviated the concerns of a worried mother after she tweeted about her young daughter being too scared to wear a Star Wars shirt at school because she thought her classmates would make fun of her for liking films geared toward boys.
“My 7-year-old daughter’s crying in bed right now because she wants to wear her Star Wars t-shirt to school but is scared her classmates will laugh because she likes ‘boy stuff...

The Force was with Mark Hamill on Thursday when the Star Wars icon was finally awarded his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in Los Angeles.
The actor, 66, was joined at the ceremony his Star Wars costar Harrison Ford, along with franchise creator George Lucas.
Before his star was placed, Hamill spoke with Variety about the honor, saying, “I’d like to say it’s a dream come true, but I didn’t even dare to dream it. And you can get self-conscious about it, like, ‘Am I worthy of this?'”

Mark Hamill is getting his own star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The Star Wars actor, 66, confirmed the big news on Twitter — while seemingly taking a shot at Donald Trump.
“Can’t say this is a dream come true because I was never foolish enough to think something like this could ever happen,” he wrote.
The actor didn’t name Trump in the tweet but referred to someone who was awarded a star for “one crappy reality show.”
“When part of me doubts I deserve such an honor, I remind myself that someone got a ‘Star’ for just one crappy reality show,...

Fans of Carrie Fisher are keeping her memory alive, and have even created a makeshift star for her on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
The 60-year-old actress, who died on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack onboard a plane, does not have an official star, but fans of the icon decorated a blank space, between those for Larry Semon and Paul Williams, with flowers, candles and the message: “Carrie Fisher May the Force Be With You Always Hope.”
Those who saw the temporary memorial spoke to the Los Angeles Times, saying they couldn’t believe Fisher didn’t already have one in her name.

So it’s a bit early, but if any motion picture deserves a year-long celebration it’s this one. This weekend, film goers are getting a true treat. The 1939 (August to be exact) classic The Wizard Of Oz is back on Imax screens and in 3D for the very first time. Sure most of you have seen it on cable TV or on home video, but an opportunity to see this gem on the big screen should not be passed up. I mean this is a film that has become a huge part of our culture . The movie itself is legendary as are the stories about its making. There’s even a feature film comedy (Under The Rainbow) that’s set backstage (but I wouldn’t consider that Chevy Chase flick a classic).
Since I’m sure you’re familiar with the plot, lets’ talk about some of the backstage stories.

You have every reason to be skeptical. We've suffered years of 3D cash-grabs. This spring visited upon us a cheap-jack James Franco grimacing through the stubbornly un-magical Oz the Great and Powerful. And the movies have only gotten L. Frank Baum right precisely once, in 1939. Return to Oz,Walter Murch's electroshock horror show, has its admirers, but would you leave a kid alone with it? And have you seen Larry Semon's 1925 cock-up, in which a goose vomits in a farmhand's face?
So, yes, it stands to reason that a 3D IMAX Wizard of Oz in 2013 would be at best a vulgar folly—something familiar all tricked out and puffed up, a special-effects humbug on par with the smoke bombs and pyrotechnics of that sad Kansas huckster hiding behind that Emerald C...

Oz 2013 cast (Pictured above: Michelle Williams as the kind fairy Glinda.) In addition to James Franco (who was nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award for 127 Hours), Sam Raimi's Oz the Great and Powerful stars Mila Kunis (Black Swan), Best Supporting Actress Oscar winner Rachel Weisz (The Constant Gardener, recently seen with Jeremy Renner in the thriller The Bourne Legacy), three-time Academy Award nominee Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine, Brokeback Mountain, My Week with Marilyn), in addition to Bill Cobbs, Zach Braff, and Joey King. Screenwriters David Lindsay-Abaire (Rise of the Guardians, Rabbit Hole) and Mitchell Kapner (Days of Wrath, The Whole Nine Yards) received credit for the Oz script. Joe Roth is one of the film's producers; his credits include Tim Burton's Alice in Wonderland, starring Johnny Depp, and Rupert Sanders' Snow White and the Huntsman, starring Kristen Stewart (both movies are mentioned in relation to Oz...

Early, rough box-office estimates: Oz to have best debut of 2013 by a wide margin Oz the Great and Powerful is about to have the strongest (by far) opening weekend of the year at the Us / Canada box office. Directed by Spider-Man's Sam Raimi, and starring James Franco as Oz, Oz scored an estimated $2 million at Thursday evening and midnight screenings and the film is expected to bring in about $23 million-25 million today (apparently that figure includes the Thursday screenings). Now, a key reason for the Oz "record" box office feat is the current year's highly disappointing attendance numbers to date. (Please see below comparisons to a couple of other successful fantasy films of recent years.) Raimi's 3D fantasy is expected to collect circa $80 million from 3,912 venues by Sunday evening. If Oz does succeed in reaching that mark, after only three days out it'll be well ahead of the total take of every 2013 domestic release,...

Lamberto Maggiorani in Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thieves Some good and/or unusual offerings tonight on Turner Classic Movies. Silent Sundays will feature the 1925 version of The Wizard of Oz. Directed by and starring silent-film comedian Larry Semon, The Wizard of Oz features Dorothy Dwan in the role that would become associated with Judy Garland, especially in the minds of some gay men — and that's one mystery I've never been able to fathom. I mean, why Judy's Dorothy? Why Dorothy to begin with? Why not Barbara Stanwyck in Baby Face? Or Norma Shearer in Let Us Be Gay? Or Conrad Veidt in The Man Who Laughs? Or Tyrone Power in The Mark of Zorro? Or Ramon Novarro in Ben-Hur? Or Frances Dee in Blood Money (or The Gay Deception or I Walked with a Zombie)? Why not Toto or Asta? It's a mystery. Albert Lamorisse's Academy Award-winning...

If I only had a brain, I would have asked for The Wizard Of Oz: 70Th Anniversary Ultimate Collector’S Edition (Warner, $69.92) three months before it premiered on DVD last Tuesday instead of three days before. But, like the Cowardly Lion, I lack courage, and couldn’t muster the resolve to ask Warner Home Video for this stellar (and extras-packed) four-disc set so far in advance. If you read Part One of my review, then I guess you have a lot of free time. Speaking of time, I’m running Out of it, so let’s get back on that Yellow Brick Road as I break down the bonus features on Discs Three and Four. (And remember: I Have watched Everything on this whole set! Really!)
