The actual plot of Michael Bay's 2009 sci-fi actioner "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is rather oblique. In 17,000 Bce, Transformers used specialized, high-tech, sun-killing solar collectors to gather energy from the galaxy's stars. Their ethical code forbid them from snuffing out stars in solar systems that supported life, but one Transformer defied said ethic to deplete Earth's sun. That Transformer was excommunicated and became the first Decepticon. Fast forward to 2009, and the modern-day Decepticons are intent on activating the ancient solar collector once again. It's hidden inside one of the Pyramids of Giza.
"Revenge of the Fallen" was filmed in several locations in the United States, including Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and remote places in New Mexico, and Arizona. The Pyramid sequences were indeed filmed in Cairo, and the footage of ancient Egyptian cities was filmed in Petra, Jordan. Many filmgoers might recognize Petra from the climax of the 1989 film "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade,...

The term "vulgar auteurism" was coined in the early 2010s to describe the work of low art big-budget filmmakers like Michael Bay. I've always felt it was a silly expression, myself. "Auteur" is a loaded word for reasons too complicated to get into here, but for me, "auteur" isn't necessarily synonymous with quality. It simply refers to a storyteller with a clear set of interests and fixations.
In Bay's case, he worships those who wear badges and uniforms for a living, and his craft involves a form of technical maximalism that's come to be known as "Bayhem." As Bay once put it while explaining his love of Robert Wise's classic 1961 musical "West Side Story," "It was all about form, style, how they use the medium. That's what I try to do with my action."
The opening to Bay's "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen" is a perfect example of what he's talking about.

Plot: A deadly female assassin comes out of hiding to protect the daughter that she gave up years before, while on the run from dangerous men.
Review: Since it was first announced over a year ago, I have been mildly intrigued by The Mother. With a mysterious plot featuring Jennifer Lopez as a vengeful parent, I expected this film to be a cookie-cutter action replica of John Wick and the myriad spin-offs and copycats it has spawned. Instead, this film benefits from having a gritty but realistic plot that is accentuated by bursts of violence. With a solid director and the burgeoning talent of writer Misha Green, The Mother is a solid throwback thriller that echoes the action flicks of the late 1990s. With some brutal violence and engaging character development, The Mother is a better offering than the hit-or-miss fare churned out by the Netflix machine.

Just in time for Mother's Day here comes "The Mother," an action movie where we get to watch Jennifer Lopez kill a lot of people. This is the type of actioner they used to make in the '80s and '90s, and had it been made back then it probably would've featured Steven Seagal or Jean-Claude Van Damme (it's just a little too low-rent for Arnie or Sly). Now we have Lopez stepping into the badass killer shoes, and she's fully convincing as she mows down nameless bad guys who get in her way. She's an unstoppable killing machine, and we buy it, mostly because Lopez is a good actor who clearly went through the movie rigamarole of learning how to handle firearms, lots and lots of firearms.
Lopez's character, credited only as The Mother (hell yeah), was once a military sniper. And she was good — we're told she...

“The Mother” is like a lot of Netflix action-dramas of late: A mix of different genres with hints of a darker, possibly richer story, that ended up being excised due to budget and/or time constraints.
There is a lot of well-worn inspiration to be found in its familiar plot, from the survivalist parent/daughter relationship found in the 2011 feature “Hanna” to another Jennifer Lopez feature, 2018’s “Second Act” in which Lopez’s character is also at odds with a daughter she gave up at birth named Zoe.
All of this is to say a film like “The Mother” shouldn’t work, and it doesn’t completely gel 100 percent. But in the hands of Jennifer Lopez and director Niki Caro, the film as a whole mostly comes together as an action-packed (at times), contemplative (at times) and entertaining story of maternal self-sacrifice.

Make no mistake, the title character in the enjoyably ridiculous The Mother is given no name, but there’s never any doubt that she’s Jennifer Lopez. From the runway-ready fur hoodie she sports in the Alaskan wilderness to the flawless eye makeup and dewy complexion that withstand everything from childbirth to a knife fight in the snowbound woods, this is a performance so loaded with celebrity baggage it’s never going to be fully convincing as a deadly assassin. Yet JLo of course is the chief reason to watch Niki Caro’s action thriller for Netflix, which is better than average, as star-driven streaming features go.

Jennifer Lopez felt “very empowered” by her latest role in “The Mother”.
In the upcoming Netflix film, the actress portrays “a deadly female assassin” who will do anything to save her daughter “while on the run from dangerous men,” as per the official synopsis.
For the role, Lopez, 53, took on a great amount of physical training including weapon training and fight training, as well as learning how to ride a motorcycle and a snowmobile.
She told Et Canada’s Morgan Hoffman that taking on the role of the Mother felt “very empowering.”

Godzilla vs. Kong director Adam Wingard is returning to the helm for a sequel that has been shrouded in secrecy for months – all we’ve heard up to this point was that Wingard’s The Guest star Dan Steven had joined the cast, and that was way back in May. But now Warner Bros. and Legendary have sent out a press release to give us more information on this currently untitled addition to the Monsterverse, which is scheduled to reach theatres on March 15, 2024.
The press release reveals that the screenplay for this film was written by Terry Rossio (the Pirates of the Caribbean series), Jeremy Slater (Moon Knight), and Simon Barrett (You’re Next), the three of them crafting a story that

There are plenty of movie universes or shared universes out there at the minute. From Marvel’s juggernaut franchise to Sony’s unusual Spider-Verse hopes, to DC’s ever unfurling extended universe. But one of my personal favourites is by far Legendary’s MonsterVerse, starting in 2014 with Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla, onto Jordan Vogt-Roberts’ Kong: Skull Island and then to Michael Dougherty’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, every entry has been its own wonderful take on the kaiju film and gone from a mankind’s view of Titan destruction, to a monster melee action film, to a biblical epic in ancient monster war, but in Adam Winged’s Godzilla vs. Kong we may just have a film closer to Toho studios’ mad and meaningful spirit than any Western monster movie has ever achieved before.
This film sees Godzilla and Kong brought together in battle, when Godzilla unexpectedly starts turning violent and nobody knows why.

The ostensible sequel to 2019’s Godzilla: King of the Monsters, the new film Godzilla vs. Kong pits the king of the titans against, well, “the” King in an epic battle for the ages. The new film delivers an abundance of action, but little else as the character-driven plot of the first film takes a back seat to the title match between the two behemoths.
These legendary monsters collide with, ultimately, the fate of the world at stake. Reprising her role as Madison Russell (aka the Godzilla Whisperer) is Millie Bobby Brown, who along with her spunky friend Josh (Julian Dennison) and conspiracy blogger Bernie (Brian Tyree Henry), follow Godzilla as he tears across the globe unleashing a torrent of destruction. Meanwhile, Kong is accompanied by young Jia (Kaylee Hottle), with whom he has forged a special bond, and her mother Illene (Rebecca Hall), in his attempts to intercept Godzilla to...

Last week, the Dark Universe unveiled itself. This cinematic universe the powers that be over at Universal are hoping to launch began with a reboot of The Mummy. Partly a Tom Cruise vehicle and partly a modern monster movie, this summer blockbuster had a lot riding on it. By all accounts, the plan is to have a series of these things, leading up to potentially an Avengers style team up. Well, the beginning could have gone better for the Dark Universe, but there’s still hope. We’ll talk about that in a bit, but also, let us briefly discuss The Mummy itself, which is a definite outlier on Cruise’s resume. Read on for more on the film and the universe it’s set to launch. This cinematic universe began on Friday with The Mummy. That film centers on the chaos that ensues when an ancient princess named Ahmanet...

Anyone who grew up in the 1970s fondly remembers “Chiller Theater” playing on Wpix in the NY area. Chiller introduced me to all the Universal classics – Dracula, Frankenstein, The Wolfman and, of course, Karloff’s 1932 addition, The Mummy. Universal’s new re-imagining of their beloved classic isn’t that Mummy, not by a long shot– but we’re in a different time and a different world, so why not?
This new Mummy stars Tom Cruise as Nick Morton, an Army commando/antiquities raider who finds and sells priceless relics on the black market. He’s stolen a map from a lovely, combative British archaeologist (Annabelle Wallis) that leads him to modern day, ultra dangerous Iraq. After he and his Army bro (Jake Johnson) call in an airstrike to save them from insurgents, a missile blast reveals the hidden tomb of Ahmanet, an Egyptian Princess who murdered her...

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has revealed its 276-member-strong class of 2013.
The list, published by The Hollywood Reporter, includes actors, cinematographers, designers, directors, documentarians, executives, film editors, makeup artists and hairstylists, "members-at-large," musicians, producers, PR folks, short filmmakers and animators, sound technicians, visual effects artists, and writers.
Jason Bateman, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Milla Jovovich, Lucy Liu, Jennifer Lopez, Emily Mortimer, Sandra Oh, Jason Schwartzman, and Michael Peña are among the roster of actors, while "The Heat" and "Bridesmaids" helmer Paul Feig made the directors' cut.
"We did not change our criteria at all," says Academy president Hawk Koch of this year's larger-than-usual class. "Yes, this year there is a tremendous amount of women, a tremendous amount of people of color, people from all walks of life. This year, we asked the branches to look at everybody who wasn't in the Academy but who deserved to be.

World War Z is easily the best time I’ve had at the movies so far this summer. Yes, I’ve heard all the stories about the huge production going over budget and all the reshoots and multiple script doctors, but for me, none of that was evident in the finished product.
Not being a fan at all of the zombie genre that has become so popular of late, I saw this more as a “global disaster” movie that had huge portions of the population affected and infected by a worldwide pandemic.
Brad Pitt is Gerry Lane, a former Un field investigator that now enjoys life as a family man with his wife (Mireille Enos) and daughters. In a hot second he goes from that tranquility to having to save his family and basically the rest of the world from marauding zombies. The infected folks are quite frightening as they...

World War Z: Zombies movie offers ‘Breathtaking’ overhead shots [See previous post: "World War Z Review: Saved by Zombies."] These early scenes establish the speed and sheer number of undead and also unveil some visual go-to’s developed by Marc Forster (of the dreadful Quantum of Solace) and DPs Robert Richardson (who started the project) and Ben Seresin (who finished it and received sole credit). The most breathtaking are the overhead shots, oftentimes from a helicopter’s Pov, showing thousands of zombies filling the streets like floodwater. They figure prominently in the movie’s best section, when Gerry travels to Israel to investigate why the Israelis sensed the coming zombie invasion early enough to build a wall around Jerusalem. (Photo: World War Z zombies try to climb Jerusalem wall.) But since World War Z isn’t very interested in exploring the effects of a zombie takeover on social or religious order, the Israeli scenes, enlivened by eye-level shots of...

Broken City
Directed by: Allen Hughes
Cast: Mark Wahlberg, Russell Crowe, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Jeffrey Wright
Running Time: 1 hr 48 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: January 18, 2013
Plot: Taggert (Wahlberg), a former cop turned private investigator, is hired by the mayor of New York City (Crowe) to investigate his wife (Zeta-Jones). As Taggert follows the first lady, he uncovers a city scandal worth billions.
Who’S It For? To enjoy Broken City, you’d have to be a big follower of Wahlberg, no matter what mess he (as a star) may find himself in. Supporters of Crowe or even Zeta-Jones will be disappointed to see them so underused. Anyone looking for a more intriguing story of corruption will find better narratives in a newspaper.
Expectations: The casting of Wahlberg opposite Crowe sounded promising, if at least within a story that seemed to focus on corruption. Going into the film as open as possible,...

It’s Denzel Washington versus a runaway freight train in Tony Scott’s latest action thriller, Unstoppable. Here’s Ryan’s review…
Ever since his success in 1986 with Top Gun, Tony Scott has specialised almost exclusively in big, noisy, high-concept entertainments such as Déjà Vu and Man On Fire. Unstoppable sees the director once again reunited with his leading man of choice, Denzel Washington, for a bombastic disaster thriller about a runaway train.
Being a Tony Scott film, this isn’t just any runaway train, but a half-mile long freighter filled with deadly chemicals. Or, as one character sensationally puts it, “A Missile The Size Of The Chrysler Building!”
Based loosely on a real incident that occurred in 2001, Unstoppable relocates the setting to Southern Pennsylvania and kicks up the action a few notches, adding extra perils (creatures in harm’s way include a badger and a horse), arguments and gratuitous scenes of macho heroism.

Denzel Washington and director Tony Scott's latest collaboration gets critical kudos.

Together Denzel Washington and director Tony Scott can reliably be expected to deliver hyperkinetic action sequences and box-office openings in the low $20 million range. Except for the $18 million "Crimson Tide" debuted to in 1995, this pair's flicks haven't plunged beneath the $20 million mark, nor have they floated past $24 million.
"Unstoppable," the duo's fifth collaboration, is likely to open within that familiar range, though its stellar reviews might lift the action flick's opening. Here's what critics are saying:
The Story
"Cinematic narrative doesn't get any simpler than that, and Scott wisely keeps the premise pure, ratcheting up the tension and raising the emotional stakes without cluttering up the story's sleek lines. A young, inexperienced railroad conductor named Will (Chris Pine) is on his first shift with veteran train operator...

TORONTO -- The bon mots fly fast and furious in A Good Woman, which transplants Oscar Wilde's Lady Windermere's Fan to a new place and time.
But while screenwriter Howard Himelstein and director Mike Barker have done a workable job of drawing the Wilde social satire out of the drawing room, the film never quite manages to travel at the same buoyant velocity as the acerbic wit.
The tone trouble and problematic casting (more about that later) prevent the adaptation from being considered truly Oscar-worthy -- that's referring both to the statuette and Mr. Wilde -- though the delicious dialogue and opulent backdrops still make for a reasonably pleasant viewing experience.
Reverting to Wilde's original title for his play, A Good Woman has been moved up to the 1930s and relocated to the decidedly airier Amalfi coast in Italy.
Several of the characters, meanwhile, now have become Americans.
That would include Robert (Mark Umbers) and Meg (Scarlett Johansson) Windermere, a young newlywed couple in good standing who have left New York's sticky summer behind for some sensible vacationing on the Italian Riviera.
Having the same idea is Mrs. Stella Erlynne (Helen Hunt), a woman of a certain age with a certain reputation to match, who has seemingly exhausted her supply of the wealthy, married New York men who served as her meal ticket.
It doesn't take long before the penniless vamp appears to have landed Robert as her latest conquest, and their frequent sightings together have set the tongues of the sunbathing aristocracy a-flapping.
Meg's discovery that Robert has been issuing a number of checks to Mrs. Erlynne would seem to confirm those rampant rumors, and she receives little solace in the enamored attention paid to her by eligible Lord Darlington (Stephen Campbell Moore).
Of course, things, as it turns out, aren't quite as they appear.
Director Barker (1999's Best Laid Plans), along with cinematographer Ben Seresin, production designer Ben Scott and costume designer John Bloomfield, get the look and feel of the picture up to Merchant Ivory snuff, but there's a prevailing wistfulness hanging over the entire enterprise that has the effect of signaling that weightier third-act twist earlier than necessary.
As for the cast, while Johansson seems to have a natural affinity for period dress, Hunt fares less successfully in the role of the calculating seductress.
She effectively conveys Mrs. Erlynne's vulnerability and pain later on, but Hunt never seems entirely comfortable in her character's skin when she's required to play the shameless vamp with a knack for insinuating herself into the beds and checkbook registers of men who should know better.
As her quite willing next victim, the very wealthy but lonely Tuppy (Tom Wilkinson) nails the required tragicomic pitch with a great deal of self-effacing charm.

Seeing a title such as "Best Laid Plans", a moviegoer just knows those plans will go dramatically awry. So the challenge facing these young and talented filmmakers is to challenge the audience: to work both with and against expectations, to dazzle the viewers with misdirection and create twists where turns are anticipated.
Writer Ted Griffin and director Mike Barker have laid out their dramatic plans with such charming deception and wit that this Fox Searchlight release should score not only with lovers of genre movie-making but with sophisticated audiences of all ages. The lack of marquee-value actors does put a burden on Fox marketing mavens, but if they target the right audiences, word-of-mouth will sell the film.
Griffin's screenplay is somewhat reminiscent of David Mamet's writing in his elaborate con game stories such as "House of Games" and "The Spanish Prisoner" -- only Griffin has shifted the scene to the pulp-fiction world of small towns and the losers who reside there, characters who would just about kill their mothers to escape the anomie and despair of their existences.
There is a risk in detailing too much of the plot, since its discovery is what the film is all about. Let's just say that late one night a couple of guys -- Bryce (Josh Brolin), a college grad just returned to his home town of Tropico, and Nick (Alessandro Nivola), who dropped out of college to take care of his dying dad -- share several drinks in a Tropico bar. Then a jailbait sexpot (Reese Witherspoon) happens to wander in at the right (wrong?) moment.
Nick splits, and Bryce and the girl get friendlier. They return to the home where Bryce is housesitting. Events swiftly spin out of control, and Bryce phones Nick later that night in desperation. The girl claims Bryce raped her. Options narrow as everyone feels trapped, and pretty soon someone is desperate enough to think the unthinkable -- murder.
Griffin's mischievous script is beautifully served by Barker's stylish direction. Barker, a former cameraman with a number of BBC films and one feature to his directorial credit, may be one of the most talented directors to emerge from the United Kingdom since Danny Boyle.
Clearly, Barker knows how to work with actors to build tension from scene to scene. And he is most definitely in command of the film's visual design.
Working with production designer Sophie Becher, he creates the ultimate film-noir small town. Tropico (portrayed by some of the more desolate patches of Bakersfield, Calif.) is a Nowhereville of stark white streets and pale-green shops, virtually devoid of people and with only an occasional battered red car chugging down the boulevard.
In contrast, the luxury home where Bryce is housesitting is a bizarre melange of purple and green, chrome and glass, with hideous shag carpets and pink lampshades -- a perfect setting for nightmare.
Tropico manages to be both wide open and claustrophobic. Ben Seresin's camera emphasizes its dreary, horizontal lines that make it look almost like a deserted movie back lot. It's truly a place that life has abandoned.
Witherspoon perfectly captures the suffocation one feels in such a hopeless town and the yearning to break away. Nivola's character has a streak of independence, but without Witherspoon he lacks the emotional resources to make the Big Move. Brolin conveys the pathetic swagger of the returning college grad, a swagger that quickly disintegrates as he finds himself getting in way over his head.
Barker also gets solid performances from actors in smaller roles, performances that resonate with increasing intensity by the time the final credits are rolling and all the pieces have finally fit into place.
