“The Crown” is gearing up for its last hurrah at the SAG Awards, an organization that has bestowed a number of prizes onto the Netflix regal show over the years. It claimed the highly coveted TV drama ensemble prize twice (2019 and ’20), while individual winners through the years were Claire Foy (2016 and ’17), John Lithgow (2016) and Gillian Anderson (2020). Now the sixth and final season is hoping to prevail for a third time, which would tie it with “Downton Abbey” in this category at three total wins.
Season 6 faces off in the TV drama ensemble race against fellow nominees “The Gilded Age,” “The Last of Us,” “The Morning Show” and “Succession.” Elizabeth Debicki is “The Crown’s” only solo acting nominee this year, with her co-nominees in the TV drama actress category being Jennifer Aniston (“The Morning Show”), Bella Ramsey (“The Last of Us”), Keri Russell (“The Diplomat”) and Sarah Snook (“Succession”).

This year’s SAG Awards nominations for drama ensemble run the gamut in terms of total cast members nominated. You have “The Gilded Age” on one side with a jaw-dropping 34 people represented. And then you have “The Last of Us” on the other side with just two — hi, Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey! HBO’s zombie apocalypse series has now tied the Screen Actors Guild record with “Key and Peele,” which was the first TV show to nab an ensemble citation with just two stars: Keegan-Michael Key and Jordan Peele.
The “Key and Peele” funny duo lost to “Orange Is the New Black” for comedy ensemble in 2016, which had a whopping 34 cast members nominated that year. Hmm, a two-person cast losing to a 34-person ensemble? Might SAG Awards history repeat itself? “The Last of Us” competes this year against “The Gilded Age” (34 cast members), “Succession” (18), “The Crown” (15) and “The Morning Show...

Meryl Streep’s 32 nominations and eight wins make her the most honored performer in the history of the Golden Globes. Now, with her supporting turn opposite Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez on the Hulu comedy “Only Murders in the Building,” she could easily extend both records.
Streep joined the critically acclaimed murder mystery for its third season, which follows the central trio as they investigate the death of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd), a popular actor who is murdered the night of his Broadway debut. She brings depth to the role of Loretta Durkin, an aspiring actress who not only catches Oliver’s (Short) eye romantically but — spoiler alert! — is also eventually revealed to be the birth mother of Ben’s adopted brother and manager Dickie (Jeremy Shamos). Her moving performance as a woman who would do anything for her son, even if it means going to prison for...

Steven Pasquale and Jeremy Shamos started working on the new Stephen Sondheim musical, Here We Are, seven years ago, while others, like Denis O’Hare, were asked to join the project last summer.
But for everyone now starring in the show, which opened Off-Broadway at The Shed on Oct. 22, joining the project was an immediate yes, largely due to the novelty of being in a new Sondheim piece, which ended up being the composer’s first new show in decades, as well as his last.
“I know all [his] shows. I know the music. I didn’t even have to read it. I said yes before I read it,” said Bobby Cannavale, who is part of the show’s ensemble cast, which also includes David Hyde Pierce, Micaela Diamond and Rachel Bay Jones.

In the penultimate song in Stephen Sondheim’s musical “Sunday in the Park with George,” Dot implores the artist George to “give us more to see.” The late maestro has done so himself one last time with the world premiere of his final musical, “Here We Are,” which opened Off-Broadway at The Shed on Oct. 22. Written with dramatist David Ives, the musical takes inspiration from two Luis Buñuel films – “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel” – that it marries with one set of characters.
Tony Award-winner Joe Mantello played an integral role in the show’s development and directs its first production. He has assembled an unrivaled ensemble to take on the roles of the unimaginably affluent characters who spend the first act trying to find a restaurant in which to have brunch, and who in the second act find themselves unable to leave after their meal.

This article contains Only Murders in the Building season 3 spoilers.
It wouldn’t feel like late summer transitioning into the crispness of fall if there wasn’t another season of the perennial comedic murder-mystery Only Murders in the Building. Co-creators Steve Martin and John Hoffman’s New York seems to hone in on the magic of the Big Apple, wrapping you in colorful cardigans, raining orange leaves upon you, and allowing you to curl up and enjoy witty one-liners and the charming score of Siddhartha Khosla.
But don’t get too comfortable.
Like the real New York, the charm is juxtaposed with some big city crime, and in the third season, that is the murder of faded Hollywood star Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd). Ben collapses on opening night of “Death Rattle” – the play that could give Oliver (Martin Short) a new lease on his career. It also gives Charles (Steve...

Spoiler Alert: This interview contains spoilers for “Opening Night,” the Season 3 finale of “Only Murders in the Building.”
Season 3 sees Mabel (Selena Gomez), Charles (Steve Martin) and Oliver (Martin Short) work together to uncover who may have wanted to kill Ben, and the list is long.
Ben, the star of Oliver’s new Broadway play, was hated by a lot of people. As it turns out, that includes Charles, who punched Ben across the face right before opening night. It also includes Loretta, played by Meryl Streep, who is secretly the biological mother of Ben’s manager and adopted brother, Dickie (Jeremy Shamos). And there’s Dickie himself, the overshadowed creator of the movie franchise that made Ben famous.
But as is revealed in Season 3 finale of “Only Murders in the Building,” titled “Opening Night,” it’s the producers of Oliver’s play — a mother and son — who are revealed to have done the deed.

[Editor’s Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Only Murders in the Building” Season 3, Episode 10, “Opening Night.”]
If you’ll allow a dreadful detective a brief moment to savor his sagacity: I absolutely called the cookie thing.
Yes, technically, the poisoned Schmackary’s pastry was part of the penultimate episode’s big reveal — when the murder board’s accusatory tacks jumped from Loretta (Meryl Streep) to Donna (Linda Emond) — but it also bears weight for the finale’s last twist and helps explain how well said twist lands with viewers.
Back when we first saw the recording of Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd) talking to an offscreen someone (or something), his chosen words sounded a little too particular. “I want you so fucking bad,” he says, “but we both know you’ll ruin my career.” Based only on his few choice scenes in the premiere, what does Ben want? Cookies. What can’t he have? Also, cookies. (He’s...

Watch out! This post contains spoilers.
There's more to Loretta Durkin than meets the eye. Since the beginning of "Only Murders in the Building" season three, Loretta, played by Meryl Streep, has been suspect number one in the mystery of who killed Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd). Though suspicion has been swirling surrounding Loretta all season, at-home detectives sent the investigation in a whole new direction when they uncovered major secrets about her past. Loretta may not be a killer, but she may have served as the ultimate red herring in a story that proves a mother would do anything for her child - possibly even commit murder.
Is Loretta Dickie's Mother?
Leading up to the season finale, the prevailing Reddit theory among viewers was that Loretta and Ben's brother-turned-manager, Dickie Glenroy (Jeremy Shamos), were accomplices in Ben's murder. Citing episode seven, "CoBro," released on Sept. 12, the...

"Only Murders In The Building" has always been more about the hangouts than the mysteries. Having recently wrapped filming, two of the show’s iconic stars are now back out on the road with their “You Won’t Believe What They Look Like Today!” comedy tour. Martin Short and Steve Martin were at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in Orlando, Fla. on Saturday, April 29 and apparently, Steve Martin let the cat out of the bag as to when fans can look forward to seeing them back on screen as two-thirds of a somewhat bumbling murder-solving trio.

On April 21, 2023, Prime Video released “Dead Ringers” with Rachel Weisz pulling double duty as twin doctors performing questionable procedures on women that are infertile. The limited series executive produced by Weisz, Alice Birch, Anne Carey, Sean Durkin, Megan Ellison, Sue Naegle, and Erica Kay is based upon the 1988 film of the same name directed by David Cronenberg.
The limited series opened to rave reviews, holding fresh at 88% on Rotten Tomatoes with a critics’ consensus that reads, “If ‘Dead Ringers’ doesn’t wield as cutting a blade as David Cronenberg’s original chiller, it’s not a pale imitation either, thanks to Rachel Weisz putting on a clinic in doppelgänger duplicity.” The ensemble cast includes Michael Chernus, Poppy Liu, Britne Oldford, Jennifer Ehle, Emily Meade, and Jeremy Shamos. Let’s see what specific reviewers have had to say.

"I want to change the way that women birth." "How does that vomit-inducing idealism translate into $$?" Amazon has debuted the full-length official trailer for their Dead Ringers series based on the 1988 film of the same name by David Cronenberg. Another modern update going from film to TV. The Mantle twins, identical from head to toe, are on a mission to change the way women give birth, starting in Manhattan. The original film's synopsis is pretty much the same: twin gynecologists (originally played by Jeremy Irons) take full advantage of the fact that nobody can tell them apart, until their relationship begins to deteriorate over a woman. This time, Rachel Weisz stars in both lead roles, as Elliot and Beverly Mantle. The series cast also includes Michael Chernus as Tom, Poppy Liu as Greta, plus Britne Oldford, Jeremy Shamos, Jennifer Ehle, and Emily Meade. This looks wild and bold and devious!

The sixth and final season of AMC's "Better Call Saul" has brought back two familiar but long-absent faces: Craig and Betsy Kettleman, played by Jeremy Shamos and Julie Ann Emery, respectively. The Kettlemans first appeared in "Uno," the very first episode of "Better Call Saul," back in 2015. They were a fixture of the show's first season, as Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn) found themselves tangled up in their legal troubles. Craig was facing embezzlement charges as country treasurer, and among other things, season 1 would see the Kettlemans hiding out in a tent in the woods on their property and Jimmy enlisting Mike Ehrmantraut (Jonathan Banks)...

[Note: The following review contains spoilers for “Better Call Saul” Season 6, Episode 2, “Carrot and Stick.”]
One of Jimmy McGill’s (Bob Odenkirk) greatest strengths is pinpointing people’s relationship to money. It’s a psychological pressure point that he’s used to his advantage when dealing with people who have everything to lose. As someone who fashions himself a bit of a legal vigilante, Jimmy gives himself a steady dose of self-righteousness, justifying a little ethical murkiness if it separates someone from what they didn’t rightfully earn.
So how better to illustrate that “angle called justice” than a reunion with Albuquerque’s quaintest, nine-figure fraudsters, Craig and Betsy Kettleman (Jeremy Shamos and Julie Ann Emery)? Hurtling toward an ending that’ll likely have far more of the latter than the former, the second episode of Season 6 finds room for a blend of tragedy and comedy. Most of it is centered in the husband-and-wife embezzlement duo that...

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Season 6, Episodes 1 & 2 of Better Call Saul, “Wine and Roses” & “Carrot and Stick.”] Better Call Saul‘s Season 6 premiere gave viewers plenty to ponder as they head into the final stretch of Jimmy McGill’s (Bob Odenkirk) Saul Goodman story. Picking up where Season 5 left off, Jimmy and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) began their plan to sabotage Howard Hamlin’s (Patrick Fabian) career by framing him for misconduct. All the while, Lalo (Tony Dalton) is on the loose as the cartel grapples with his presumed death after mercenaries hired by Gus (Giancarlo Esposito) opened fire on his compound in Mexico. Unaware of the looming threat of Lalo, Jimmy and Kim go about executing their scheme against Howard with some success, which brings them face-to-face with some people from their past, and Betsy (Julie Ann Emery) and Craig Kettleman (Jeremy Shamos) become part of the plan. This article contains spoilers for Better Call Saul season 6 episode 2.
The producers of Better Call Saul have already made it clear that the sixth and final season of the Breaking Bad spinoff will feature two of the biggest cameos possible in the form of Walter White (Bryan Cranston) and Jesse Pinkman (Aaron Paul).
While we don’t know when Walt and Jesse will stop by Saul Goodman’s Albuquerque (or perhaps Gene Takovic’s Omaha), the first two episodes of the season reveal that there’s still room for other non-Walt or Jesse-sized guest appearances. In fact, the second episode of this final season, “Carrot and Stick”, reaches all the way back to Better Call Saul season 1 to reintroduce some (sort of) familiar old faces.
As Saul (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) work out the details of their plot to frame Howard Hamlin (Patrick Fabian) for “something unforgivable” they...

They join previously announced series lead Rachel Weisz as well as cast members Michael Chernus, Poppy Liu, Britne Oldford and Jeremy Shamos.

The series version will see Weisz playing the double lead role of Elliot and Beverly Mantle, twins who share everything: drugs, lovers, and an unapologetic desire to do whatever it takes, including pushing the boundaries on medical ethics in an effort to challenge antiquated practices and bring women’s healthcare to the forefront.
Ehle will play Rebecca, a brilliant and ruthless heiress, regularly featuring on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. Married to the hopeful and surprisingly shrewd Susan (Meade), the two share a fascination with science,...

Leading the charge this week in streaming and specialty titles is Netflix with two films that have been garnering awards season buzz with their star wattage and prestige storytelling.
First up, is the highly anticipated Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom adapted from two-time Pulitzer Prize winner August Wilson’s play of the same name. Set in 1920s Chicago the film spotlights the legendary “Mother of the Blues” Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) and a band of musicians as they have a recording session amidst rising temperatures and tensions.
When the outspoken and fearless Ma arrives late, she has words with her white manager and producer over control of her music. As the band waits in the studio’s claustrophobic rehearsal room, ambitious cornet player Levee (Chadwick Boseman) stirs the pot with his fellow musicians which results in revealing truths that changes the course in all their lives. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom (2020): Viola Davis as Ma Rainey. Cr. David Lee / Netflix
Chadwick Boseman’s last performance is opposite Viola Davis in a gripping drama based on August Wilson’s play, “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Boseman gives a fiery, heartbreaking performance in this excellent film. It is as fine, and fitting, a final performance as one could hope for from the late actor.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom is a powerful, slow-building, jangling film that’s full of life. It may feel loose, but from the script to the cast, there’s not an ounce of fat on it. When the time comes, it delivers a brutal gut-punch, and then one more for the road. Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis take up all the oxygen every time they’re in the room, which makes the anticipation of their eventual showdown feel breathless.
In sweltering 1927 Chicago, the legendary “Mother of the Blues” Ma Rainey (Viola Davis) is in town to record an album; her panic-y white manager and production stooge buzz about, trying to control every aspect of the endeavor—the song list, the timetable, the pay—all while Ma and (most of) her accompanying band know who’s really in charge: Ma.

Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom Review: Chadwick Boseman Gives the Best Performance of His Truncated Career
Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom director George C. Wolfe and screenwriter Ruben Santiago-Hudson may not bring the same cinematic eye that Denzel Washington infused in his 2016 adaptation Fences, but their take on August Wilson’s 1984 play, tackling the 1920s in Wilson’s decade-spanning “Pittsburgh Cycle,” is a faithful one. Featuring standout performances by both Wilson stalwart Viola Davis as the titular Ma and Chadwick Boseman as her trumpet player Levee, the transition from stage to screen is a compelling one.
A reliably stoic actor in his sadly truncated career, Boseman steals the film, showcasing a twitchy high-wire act rarely seen in his previous work. He’s not only the best thing in the film, which also features Davis at her most flamboyant, but it’s the best work he’s ever done, a towering achievement in his final film role.

“Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” opens with a thundering blues performance and ends with a gut punch. Both moments inject fresh energy and righteous fury into the 1982 August Wilson play that launched his 10-part Pittsburgh Cycle, but in between, the movie hews to more familiar turf. , director George C. Wolfe’s reverential adaptation livens up the material with sizzling color and vivid closeups. Save for a few digressions, however, Wolfe and screenwriter Ruben Santiago-Hudson have put the play into the movie, rather than vice versa.
For Wilson devotees and newbies alike, that’s a sturdy enough combo to let this bittersweet ode to the Mother of Blues strut its stuff. The second adaptation of the Pittsburgh Cycle following Denzel Washington’s sturdy “Fences” treatment (he serves as a producer here), “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” embodies the frustrations of Black artists in a society rigged against them, with the boisterous singer and...
