Prior to his work on "Star Wars" in 1977, actor and bodybuilder David Prowse had made a career playing goons, creatures, and bodyguards in high-profile movies. Prowse played Frankenstien's monster in the Hammer film "The Horror of Frankenstein," a role he had already played briefly in the 1967 version of "Casino Royale." He played a comedic torturer in "Carry On, Henry," the 21st "Carry On" movie. Most visibly, Prowse played the muscular bodyguard for the injured old Frank (Patrick Magee) in Stanley Kubrick's "A Clockwork Orange." He was the one who got to cradle Malcolm McDowell like a baby. This was easy for Prowse, who stood six-foot-six.
The actor also played Darth Vader "Star Wars," "The Star Wars Holiday Special," "The Empire Strikes Back," and "Return of the Jedi" ... but only in the scenes wherein Darth Vader wore a mask. In "Jedi," when Vader finally revealed his face, Prowse was replaced by actor Sebastian Shaw.

No one enjoys spoilers, especially when they’re revealed years before a film or show’s release. However, it took an extreme turn in the case of George Lucas’ Star Wars franchise, with the revelation of one of the most significant spoilers led to a prolonged estrangement between the filmmaker and David Prowse, the actor behind the iconic antagonist, Darth Vader.

Prowse would go on to reprise the role in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi, after A New Hope. However, the late actor found himself banned from film sets and all Star Wars events after Lucas found out about Prowse’s inadvertent divulgence of major plot details surrounding the beloved sci-fi saga.

This article contains spoilers for "X-Men '97."
Episode 5 of "X-Men '97" — "Remember It" — may very well go down as the most shocking TV moment of 2024. Adapting the dark "X-Men" comic storyline "E Is For Extinction" by Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely, a giant Sentinel razed the new mutant homeland of Genosha, killing thousands, if not millions.
Episode 6, "Lifedeath Part 2," took a break focusing instead on the absent Storm and Professor X, but episode 7, "Bright Eyes," explores the fallout of Genosha. It picks up about a week later when the X-Men are hosting a rainy funeral for Gambit. They go back to Genosha to continue searching for more survivors. They find one: Emma Frost, White Queen of the Hellfire Club.
Emma, who was part of Genosha's short-lived ruling council, is a telepath. During the attack, she unlocked a second mutation to turn her skin diamond hard, so she survived being crushed under rubble.

George Lucas Nearly Cast a Different Actor as Darth Vader Changing the Flow of the Franchise Forever
Darth Vader is undeniably one of the most iconic fictional characters, known for his menacing black suit and distinctive voice. Many other works of fiction and art make reference to the character, making it a familiar presence.
But, did you know that the role of Vader nearly went to a different actor? One who, at the time, might have been even more preferred than James Earl Jones given the circumstances?
During the late 1970s, while filming ‘A New Hope’ in London, David Prowse, who portrayed Darth Vader physically, delivered all of Vader’s lines from behind the mask. However, the mask muffled his speech, necessitating dubbing in post-production. Prowse initially expected to dub his own lines, but logistical issues and concerns about his accent prompted George Lucas to seek another voice. Lucas sought a deep, distinguished voice befitting the enigmatic Darth Vader. Ultimately, James Earl Jones, then a relatively unknown actor,...

Darth Vader is without a doubt one of the most iconic fictional characters, recognized by his ominous black suit and his voice. Plenty of other works of fiction and art reference the character, and it’s one of those references we can always easily spot.
But, did you know that the iconic role almost went to a completely different actor? The one that at the time would be perhaps even favored above James Earl Jones under the circumstances?
While filming ‘A New Hope’ in London during the late 1970s, David Prowse, the actor behind Darth Vader’s physical performance, spoke all of Vader’s lines from behind the mask. However, due to the mask muffling his speech, his lines had to be dubbed over in post-production. Just like a prayer, the latest trailer for the highly anticipated "Deadpool & Wolverine" arrived this morning, showing off even more of Wade Wilson's first entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. If bringing the R-rated Merc with a Mouth into the Marvel Studios world wasn't enough, with all the naughtiness that entails, surely Hugh Jackman picking up Wolverine's claws again will seal the deal.
Of course, since "Deadpool & Wolverine" is bringing the characters from 20th Century Fox's universe of Marvel movies into the MCU, there are even more recognizable faces who will be popping up. Along with reports of Jennifer Garner reprising her role as Elektra and the appearance of Pyro in the first trailer for the movie, the latest batch of footage shows off some returning characters from previous "X-Men" movies. Perhaps even more interesting is where those characters appear in the trailer, especially when it comes...

Reintroducing villains or anti-heroes from former movies hasn’t really been MCU’s style ever since it was kicked off with Iron Man back in 2008. Characters like Loki and Bucky Barnes have been an exception in Marvel’s Cinematic Universe as they have already redeemed themselves in multiple movies and series over the years.

Many stars have been a part of Marvel’s extended universe over the years, even if they were never a part of Marvel Cinematic Universe. From Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy to the X-Men movies, none of these were a part of the MCU as Marvel Studios did not have the rights for these characters until a few years ago.

Time and again, the X-Men saga has proved to be Marvel Comics’ key source of bold, hard-hitting, poignant storytelling, with the stories of mutants acting as an allegorized account of the real-world treatment of the marginalized sections of society. With the latest episode of X-Men ’97, titled Remember It, viewers are once again reminded of the scope of such narratives, as a devastating tragedy taking place in the mutant nation of Genosha almost reminds us of an ongoing real-world crisis.

Spoilers for "X-Men '97" to follow.
The latest episode of "X-Men '97," "Remember It," took us to mutant haven Genosha (before it all went to Hell anyway). The island turned out to be a treasure trove of cameos; the Genoshan ruling council included Hellfire Club leaders Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw, Morlock leader Callisto, the Irish mutant Banshee, Professor X's old flame Moira MacTaggert, and former Goblin Queen Madelyne Pryor. The streets of Genosha were filled with other mutants whom "X-Men" comics fans may recognize, from Pixie to Dazzler to Marrow to Exodus.
The best mutant cameo of all, though, is the blue-skinned Bavarian Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler. His voice actor, Adrian Hough, joins the ranks of those who've reprised their roles from the 1992 "X-Men" cartoon.
Kurt shows up in the episode's title sequence doing some sword fighting with Gambit. In the episode itself, he escorts Rogue and Gambit...

Darth Vader is synonymous with "Star Wars." George Lucas dubbing his space-set saga "The Tragedy of Darth Vader" is obvious retroactive thinking, but looking at how much of the story centers around the villain, is he wrong? It's not often that a character can become a mascot and remain scary, either. Yet somehow, the Dark Lord of the Sith pulls it off.
What about the actor behind Vader's distinctive black, armored visage? There's been many over the years, even if you may not be able to place their faces. Vader's face being seen so little adds to his mystique and further cements him as a character beyond any one performer.
Indeed, Vader is usually played by more than one actor in the very same movie; the role has traditionally been divided between the man wearing the costume and the one providing Vader's voice. Across major "Star Wars" film and TV productions,...

Way back in 2000, audiences watching X-Men gave a knowing chuckle when a leather-clad Cyclops asked Wolverine, “What would you prefer, yellow spandex?” At the time, even those of us who love the Canucklehead’s traditional duds understood the point. In a world where Superman’s blue and red suit disappeared from screens in 1987 and only Batman’s nipple-y but dark suits remained, the lavish X-Men costumes of the comics wouldn’t fly with general audiences.
For all the successes across the 13 films in the Fox X-Men franchise, concessions to a general audience not inundated with superheroes meant that the studio felt the need to cut some corners. Some of the revisions worked, especially the tall, handsome Aussie Hugh Jackman’s more romantic take on the short, ugly Canadian Wolverine. Others, however, left much to be desired.

Be there when it happens! So declared the final trailer for The Marvels, a 90-second spot that contains almost as many images of past MCU glories as it does shots from the actual movie it claims to promote. The trailer only slightly tips its hand toward the one thing that could be deemed universe-altering, a mid-credit sequence in which Monica Rambeau (Teyonah Parris) awakens in another universe, tended to by a variant of her mother Maria, now in the Binary persona, and Dr. Henry McCoy aka Beast (Kelsey Grammer) of the X-Men.

This article contains spoilers for the "Ahsoka" season 1 finale, "The Jedi, the Witch, and the Warlord."
George Lucas has been making changes to the original theatrical releases of the "Star Wars" movies since day one. "A famous filmmaker once said that films are never completed, they are only abandoned," Lucas said in an interview from a January 1997 issue of Starlog. "So rather than live with my 'abandoned' movies, I decided to go back and complete them."
For the original "Star Wars," before it was given the title of "A New Hope," there really is no original theatrical edition, as it was a different film depending on how you saw it. If you caught it in mono as opposed to stereo, there were different quirks to the dialogue (and even some actors). For "The Empire Strikes Back", the ending shots of the Rebellion's fleet were added weeks after the initial release.

Since the first "Star Wars" film came out in 1977, the sci-fi universe has continued to spawn fan debate. At what moment did Darth Vader figure out that Luke was alive and his son? Why doesn't Darth Vader recognize R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3Po (Anthony Daniels)? Why in the world would Luke still keep the last name Skywalker when his father Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) might find him? How did Leia (Carrie Fisher) remember her mother's sadness if she'd just been born when Padmé (Natalie Portman) died?
We ask these questions with love ... mostly. One that has always bugged fans (including me) is this: If both Obi-Wan Kenobi (Sir Alec Guinness) and Yoda (Frank Oz) disappear when they die, before becoming Force ghosts, why doesn't the same happen for the redeemed Anakin Skywalker? If you recall, Obi-Wan's brown robes just fall to the ground after Darth Vader kills him.

Hayden Christensen returned once more as Anakin Skywalker in Disney+’s “Ahsoka,” marking the second time fans have gotten him back in the “Star Wars” universe in two years. And it was undeniably one of his best appearances.
Granted, it wasn’t his best “Star Wars” appearance. We’re not saying it was bad by any means — just that, in the grand scheme of his presence in this franchise, there’s a lot to consider. So, we went ahead and considered it!
Will “Ahsoka” be the last time we see Christensen in this particular on-screen galaxy? It’s hard to say for sure. We hope not, but on the chance it is, we decided to rank the actor’s appearances across “Star Wars.” You can check it out below.

Live-action Star Wars fans are about to learn quite a lot about how space and time works in the galaxy far, far away thanks to the latest twist on Ahsoka which introduces the World Between Worlds. But viewers who haven’t watched the Rebels season 4 episode “A World Between Worlds” may be a bit confused about what is going on when Ahsoka wakes up in the mystical plane, welcomed by none other than her former master Anakin Skywalker, played by a de-aged Hayden Christensen to boot.
What is the World Between Worlds and how the heck is Clone Wars-era Anakin suddenly back? And did Ahsoka die at the end of episode 4 in order to return to this realm? One question is definitely much easier to answer than the others…

The central villain of George Lucas' 1977 sci-fi film "Star Wars" is a stuffy, cold-hearted general named Grand Moff Tarkin (Peter Cushing). He is an efficient commander of an Imperial military force who leads a fleet of well-armed Star Destroyers and is single-minded in his task of finding and quelling a scrappy uprising of resourceful rebels. He also commands a brand new moon-sized superstructure called a Death Star, capable of exterminating an entire planet in a single shot. The most chilling thing about him is the way he goes about his job with mere determination. He is dispassionate about causing death, only knowing it needs to be done for the good of the Empire.
More memorable is his lieutenant, a mysterious masked wizard in a black cape named Darth Vader. In the original 1977 film, Darth Vader was a scary, magical figure who served the Empire for reasons unknown. It wouldn't be...

There were a lot of things about "Star Wars: Episode VI -- The Return of the Jedi" that gave fans closure for the trilogy. The second Death Star was blown up. The Emperor (Ian McDiarmid) was defeated. Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) finally admitted their feelings and kissed. We also found out that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) and Leia were siblings and saw Darth Vader redeemed and unmasked before his death. That last one might have been wonderful for fans, but for David Prowse, who did all the physical work for the role (with the voice of James Earl Jones replacing his own), it was a disappointment.
That is according to an interview with Prowse with Rock Cellar Magazine in 2012. The actor, who passed away at the age of 85 in 2020, had been a bodybuilder, helped train Christopher Reeve for his 1978 "Superman" role, and appeared in projects like "A Clockwork Orange,...

May the force be with you–but not necessarily with you if you think everybody cares about the original Star Wars cuts. Jon Favreau, who created the first-ever live-action Star Wars series, The Mandalorian, has some thoughts on if there is enough interest in the original theatrical editions.
In an interview with Moovy TV, the host flaunted his theatrical edition LaserDiscs before asking if Jon Favreau had “enough clout” to get the original versions of Star Wars released.
“Do you think anybody but us, like, the people who grew up with it, like anybody would care?” said Jon Favreau of the original Star Wars releases. “Because I know to younger people…that’s what I figured out is that the younger people have a whole different perception of what Star Wars is. Each generation. For the millennials, it’s the prequels. And for younger people–zoomers–sometimes it’s The Clone Wars.

Then again, Tuesday is Valentine’s Day, and there’s a chance that Saturday date night could be a good excuse for couples to see one of this weekend’s two romantic offerings. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.
Coming into the weekend is Channing Tatum’s “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” who is no stranger to the Super Bowl weekend, having starred in “Dear John” opposite Amanda Seyfried way back in 2010, which launched on Super Bowl weekend to the tune of 30.5 million. The double and triple-crosses pile up to preposterous heights in “Sharper,” a drama about con artists and the people they’re playing that takes the hoary adage “nothing is as it seems” to contrived extremes. A deep ensemble cast is game for this ambitiously overwrought material, but no amount of committed acting can overcome the movie’s manipulative artifice.
Things begin simply, with a title card introducing the first of the ensemble’s characters, “Tom.” Played by the likable Justice Smith (“Jurassic World: Dominion”), Tom owns a small bookshop in lower Manhattan, where Sandra (Briana Middleton), a graduate college student working on her thesis, comes looking for a copy of Zora Neale Hurston’s “Their Eyes Were Watching God.”
The couple hit it off and go out on a date, which soon leads to an intimate relationship. They bond over their mutual love of Fellini and their shared fluency in Italian.

Released in 2000, "X-Men" is one of the most important superhero movies of all time. Before that, movies in the genre were getting pretty silly. Take, for example, Joel Schumacher's "Batman" films. However, "X-Men" dared to take the source material seriously by emphasizing the deeper themes that typified the comics, with a top-notch cast that includes Patrick Stewart, Halle Berry, Ian McKellen, and, of course, Hugh Jackman. The film was a critical and box office hit and helped pave the way for a slew of big-budget superhero movies, including "Spider-Man," "Fantastic Four," "Ghost Rider," and "Daredevil." It's safe to say that "X-Men" paved the way for the Marvel Cinematic Universe we know and love today.
The popularity of that first "X-Men" film led to a massive series of sequels, prequels, spinoffs, and TV shows. There've been numerous high points throughout this franchise, such as "X2: X-Men United," "X-Men: Days of Future Past,...

What's the best approach to winning Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon? If you're James Gunn, you simply cast Bacon as himself for your Marvel Cinematic Universe streaming special, "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special."
The 44-minute special, which Gunn both wrote and directed, catches up with the biggest a-holes in the galaxy sometime after the events of "Thor: Love and Thunder." With Christmas just around the corner and Peter (Chris Pratt) still in mourning for Gamora, Drax (Dave Bautista) and Mantis (Pom Klementieff) devise a surefire plan to cheer him up: giving him a special present in the form of his childhood hero, Kevin Bacon. Okay, it's not exactly the deepest or the most profound premise. In fact, in his review, /Film's Chris Evangelista argued that the "mighty silly and mighty light [special is] so light that it's a wonder it even exists." But then again, one could argue that comes with the territory.

Kevin Bacon has finally entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though it is in an incredibly surprising way. He will be playing himself in the forthcoming "The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special" set to premiere on Disney+ on November 25, 2022. Thanks to mergers and multiverses, Bacon technically already is in the MCU, as he played Sebastian Shaw in "X-Men: First Class," but this is his official introduction to the current slate.
Because Bacon will be playing himself, it immediately brings to mind the incredibly fun game "Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon." The man has appeared in so many films for over 40 years now, in both leading and supporting parts, that it feels like he has worked with every actor out there. Surprisingly, this holiday special will be the first time he has worked with every actor that makes up the Guardians team. That means playing Six Degrees with this cast is pretty fun.

Nearly 30 years after “X-Men: The Animated Series” debuted, many of the beloved characters are returning for Marvel Studios’ upcoming show “X-Men ’97,” coming to Disney+ in fall 2023 with a second season already confirmed.
“X-Men ’97” will continue the story of the original “Animated Series,” which ran from 1992 to 1997 on Fox Kids Network. “X-Men: The Animated Series” helped usher in the popularity of the mutant superheroes before Fox made the first live-action take on the team in 2000.
The new series will include Rogue, Beast, Gambit, Jean Grey, Wolverine, Storm, Jubilee and Cyclops. Magneto, now with long hair and a purple suit, will lead the X-Men. The animation, revealed at Comic Con on Friday, stays true to the original animated series, but looks more modern, updated and sleek.
Cable, Bishop, Forge, Morph and Nightcrawler will also join the X-Men onscreen. Battling them will be the (non-“Stranger Things”) Hellfire Club with Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw,...

The recent Knights of X #1 marks a new chapter in the ongoing saga of Betsy Braddock, the mutant telepath once known as Psylocke of the X-Men and currently serving as Captain Britain. The final issues of Excalibur saw the conquest of Otherworld, Marvel’s version of the realm of faerie magic, at the hands of Merlyn and King Arthur. This cut Otherworld off from Krakoa, effectively isolating Betsy and the rest of the Captain Britain Corps there. Luckily, she’s got some help! Roma, Merlyn’s daughter and a friend to the X-Men from days past, gives Betsy the chance to assemble a team for a proper Arthurian quest to find the artifact known as the Siege Perilous.
There’s just one question newer readers may be wondering…

This article contains Stranger Things season 4 spoilers. We have a spoiler-free review here.
When we catch up with Mike, Dustin, Lucas, and Erica in Stranger Things season 4 episode 1, it’s good to see that high school hasn’t dulled their enthusiasm for Dungeons & Dragons. But with Will now living across the country in California, they’ve had to find a new dungeon master, who they have in the charismatic, self-proclaimed “freak” Eddie Munson.
Munson is an ‘80s metalhead, one who revels in the “satanic panic” that surrounds both his chosen music and his favorite hobby. With a sardonic sense of humor, he’s named his D&d group “The Hellfire Club,” an obvious attempt to poke fun at the folks who think his musical taste, appearance, and fondness for D20s make him an agent of the devil. But the name “The Hellfire Club” also has broader historical and pop cultural significance…...

We are living in the superhero age of cinema, but that doesn’t necessarily translate to a golden age of action cinema. Among the biggest directors working today, the best action tends to fall outside of the superhero genre, driven by a handful of action auteurs of which Matthew Vaughn is one of the very best. In honor of The King’s Man recent streaming launch on HBO Max and Hulu, we’re ranking Vaughn’s best action scenes of all time. Were does your favorite fall on our list?

The Prequel era is back in full force. Not only will we see the return of Ewan McGregor in next year’s Obi-Wan Kenobi limited series but also Hayden Christensen, either reprising his role as Anakin Skywalker in a flashback/vision or as Darth Vader for a never-before-seen confrontation with his old master. Either way, McGregor and Christensen’s first scene together since 2005’s Revenge of the Sith will be a huge moment on Disney+ in 2022.
But Christensen’s Star Wars comeback isn’t stopping there. THR reports that the actor will also appear in the upcoming Ahsoka series opposite Rosario Dawson, although it’s again unclear whether he’ll show up as the troubled Jedi hero or the Sith monster he became after parting ways with his former padawan. Either way, Christensen’s debut in the post-Original Trilogy era does present some very interesting possibilities for what this could...

Kevin Bacon definitely isn’t a stranger to horror or being the bad guy since he did end up being one of the many that fell victim to the killer in the first Friday the 13th, and he did star in the movie Tremors with Fred Ward and Michael Gross. He’s also starred in X-Men: First Class as Sebastian Shaw and Ripd with Ryan Reynolds, so he knows how to play the part of a villain. Any mention of Elijah Wood as the villain for the reboot of The Toxic Avenger appears to have been in error since it’s been established

Star Wars Sequel Trilogy 2017 middle act The Last Jedi may have a share of detractors for numerous reasons, but the 2019 release of J.J. Abrams’s closing follow-up, The Rise of Skywalker, and three whole years of hindsight have put it into perspective, generating a unique appreciation for director Rian Johnson’s renegade franchise offering. However, Johnson has revealed that a key scene almost revisited one of the most maligned retroactive alterations to the sacred Original Trilogy: Hayden Christensen’s Force Ghost Anakin Skywalker.
Johnson recently provided a potent answer to a fan’s question on Twitter about an unrealized concept for The Last Jedi that would have seen Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) reunite with a spectral version his formerly wayward father, Anakin Skywalker, played by Christensen. As it turns out, the idea was ultimately nixed in favor of a key scene in which Luke instead has a more familiar reunion with Ghost Yoda.

David “Dave” Prowse, the actor under Darth Vader’s helmet and armor in the original Star Wars trilogy, has died after a short illness at the age of 85. His agent announced his death early on Sunday morning, saying:
“It’s with great regret and heart-wrenching sadness for us and millions of fans around the world, to announce that our client Dave Prowse MBE has passed away at the age of 85.”
The former bodybuilder made his leap into a galaxy far, far away after George Lucas spotted him in a bit part in Stanley Kubrick’s A Clockwork Orange. According to Prowse, he was offered a choice between playing Chewbacca or Vader and chose the latter on the basis that “everyone remembers the villain.”

It’s not hard to think that a lot of people still don’t realize that there were three people that brought Darth Vader to life in the original trilogy. David Prowse was the guy in the suit, James Earl Jones was the voice of the iconic villain, and Sebastian Shaw was the guy that was in the suit when the mask was taken off. But of the three, only David Prowse has been banned from any and all Star Wars conventions over the years. The rumor is that he let it slip that Darth Vader was Luke’s father before anyone else

Peter “Star-Lord” Quill is a lover of many icons of 80s pop culture, but one of his biggest heroes is Kevin Bacon. The Guardians of the Galaxy have made a bunch of references to the legendary actor across the McU so far, specifically in conjunction with Quill’s opinion that Footloose is forever the greatest movie ever made. But what does Kevin Bacon himself make of these tongue-in-cheek yet affectionate name-checks?
While speaking ComicBook.com, Bacon revealed that he was thrilled to find out he was mentioned in Guardians of the Galaxy when he first went to see it in the theater, saying:

In superheroics, taxes are apparently optional, because the only two things that are truly certain are death and rebirth. To that end specifically, X-Men founder Charles Xavier has assembled a team of five mutants, imaginatively christened The Five, to put the resurrectional studies of Moira MacTaggert into action following the establishment of the sovereign island nation of Krakoa.
The team of Fabio “Goldballs” Medina, Kevin “Proteus” MacTaggert, Joshua “Elixir” Foley, Eva “Tempus” Bell, and the first new mutant born after M-Day, Hope Summers, have perfected a process by which they were able to reproduce the bodies, powers, minds, and memories of their fallen brethren, thereby taking the insignificance of “comic book death” to an entirely new level.
One of the few mutants who has, for reasons yet unknown, been unable to cross through the Gateways to Krakoa, however, is Kitty Pryde, who first appeared in X-Men #129 in January of 1980. Instead,...

Now that Dark Phoenix has wrapped up the 20-year X-Men movie franchise, a whole bunch of interesting “what ifs?” have started surfacing regarding Fox’s shared universe. One such juicy nugget that’s been uncovered concerns First Class, the 2011 prequel that kicked off the current series starring James McAvoy as Professor X and Michael Fassbender as Magneto.
As you may or may not know, First Class began as an X-Men Origins movie for Erik Lensherr. However, after X-Men Origins: Wolverine tanked, the project was taken in a new direction. In its earlier form, however, the main villain of the piece wouldn’t have been Sebastian Shaw, leader of the Hellfire Club. Instead, it would’ve been Nathaniel Essex aka Mister Sinister.

Kevin Brownlow and Andrew Mollo were teenagers when filming began on this superlative wartime thriller. Taking over eight years to complete, it imagines life in an England occupied by Nazi Germany and run by home-grown English collaborators. The film’s realism outdoes any big-studio picture — the period detail and military hardware are uncannily authentic. It also pushes the limit of the documentary form by using the ugly testimony of real English fascists in a fictional context. Mr. Brownlow opens up his behind-the-scenes film archive for this dual-format release.

With Justice League failing to meet financial expectations at the box office, it’s forced many of us to ponder the future of the DC Extended Universe. And regardless of said gross, it’s the hope of many – this writer included – that we continue to see new territory being charted that, of course, includes heroes and villains who’ve not had much exposure on the big screen.
Taking those financial shortcomings into consideration, I’m not ashamed to admit that I was surprised to see Warner Bros. are seemingly all for proceeding with a Flashpoint movie. I mean, the Scarlet Speedster is long overdue for some exposure on the silver screen, but anyone remotely familiar with Geoff Johns’ game-changing comic book of the same name is well aware of how it also includes alternate takes on Batman, Superman, Cyborg, Aquaman, Wonder Woman and even Shazam.
