The Alien Report: "The Alien Report follows "The Abductee" (Braxton Hale), an everyday American who finds himself hijacked by extraterrestrial beings and taken on a terrifying journey of self-preservation, running afoul of classic "grey aliens", disturbing human-et hybrids, and the U.S. government's shady Men in Black. Based on countless documented reports made by self-proclaimed abductees, The Alien Report is a meticulous, straight-faced look at what an real-life alien abduction would be like, from the perspective of first-person cameras.
The Alien Report has screened at festivals worldwide, winning awards in the U.S., UK, Australia, and Brazil. Shot on iPhone and GoPro cameras as a non-traditional narrative composed of re-assembled found footage, the picture plays out as both a sci-fi thriller and first-person documentary. It is the intended first chapter in a trilogy of films about extraterrestrial abductions.
The Alien Report was directed by Patrick Donnelly and produced by Kevin Schroeder and Michael Sell.

Lots of people dream of making a studio movie, but in the midst of their reverie, they don't always take into account just what a grueling process it can be. People work long hours and are expected to be at their sharpest every day so that the project doesn't fall behind schedule or go over budget. From the director on down, the pressure to deliver is immense. So every now and then, a little levity is in order. This occasionally results in on-set pranks, which sometimes get a tad out of control.
Consider the case of 1996's "The Fan." Tony Scott's thriller about a die-hard San Francisco Giants fan (Robert De Niro) who begins stalking his favorite baseball player (Wesley Snipes) was a high-profile production for Sony. The studio poured $55 million into the movie, and hoped it would be a late-summer, adult-skewing smash à la "The Fugitive" or "Unforgiven.

Submarine Entertainment is picking up worldwide sales rights on Chris Skotchdopole’s feature directorial debut “Crumb Catcher.” The move comes just ahead of the darkly comic thriller’s Fantastic Fest world premiere.
Skotchdopole wrote, directed, edited, and produced the movie and Submarine Entertainment, a notable sales and production company, will launch sales out of the festival, which runs from Sept. 21 to Sept. 28 at the Alamo Drafthouse South Lamar in Austin, Texas. “Crumb Catcher” was described by Fantastic Fest programmer Anna Bogutskaya as a “chamber piece that melds extreme anxiety with the worst salesmanship imaginable.” The film follows a newlywed couple held captive by an entrepreneur desperate to finance his outlandish invention with a blackmail plot.
With ten years of experience working with Glass Eye Pix, the New York independent genre production outfit led by horror auteur Larry Fessenden, Skotchdopole has amassed numerous credits on several films, including working as the cinematographer on Fessenden’s “Depraved,...

Undoubtedly one of Netflix’s most anticipated original films (and indeed one of their most expensive) is War Machine, the new war satire that stars Oscar Nominee Brad Pitt (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Inglorious Basterds). And to celebrate its impending release, Netflix has debuted a new trailer and some new art from the film.
Directed by acclaimed filmmaker David Michôd (Animal Kingdom, The Rover), the film is inspired by the book “The Operators: The Wild & Terrifying Inside Story of America’s War in Afghanistan”, written by the late journalist Michael Hastings. Pitt stars as “hot-shot General McMahon endeavoring to cut through the politics of war only to be reminded, time and time again, that this is one machine that can’t be stopped.”
Tilda Swinton (Okja), Scoot McNairy (Aftermath), Will Poulter (The Revenant) and Sir Ben Kingsley (Iron Man 3) are amongst the co-stars.

Slap Bard Pitt’s million dollar smile on anything, and he can sell it — even death and destruction.
That’s exactly what’s being sold in “War Machine,” as revealed in a snappy new trailer for the pitch black comedy from Australia’s David Michôd (“Animal Kingdom”). Pitt plays a smooth-operating U.S. General leading an ill-advised war in the Middle East that just keeps churning. The dark comedy is an absurdist take on contemporary warfare that skewers the military industrial complex through the story of one General’s rise and fall.

The Directors Guild of America has announced the nominees for the 68th annual DGA Awards! Missing were Todd Haynes ("Carol") and Steven Spielberg for "Bridge of Spies." But I'm very happy that George Miller for "Mad Max: Fury Road" got in. While we're in the subject of sequel, apparently, the DGA felt that J.J. Abrams is not worthy...yet...for a nod!
But this year's awards offer a bunch of newbies like Tom McCarthy ("Spotlight"), Adam McKay ("The Big Short"), and Miller. Meanwhile, Ridley Scott has been nominated three times before but never won for "Thelma and Louise" in 1991, "Gladiator" in 2000, and "Black Hawk Down" in 2001. Let's see if "The Martian" will do the trick and get Ridley his DGA! By the way, he hasn't won an Oscar either and he was nominated for those movies too!
Winners will be announced on Feb. 6th. Here's your complete list of nominees...

Finally, I get a precursor right. After what has seemed like an impossible to predict awards season, I actually went five for five with my Directors Guild of America (or DGA) nominees, which were announced earlier today. The nominees were, of course, Alejandro G. Iñárritu for The Revenant, Tom McCarthy for Spotlight, Adam McKay for The Big Short, George Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road, and Ridley Scott for The Martian. They very well could be your Oscar five on Thursday morning when the Academy Awards are handed out (stay tuned for my final predictions tomorrow), though they’re hardly all locked in, that’s for sure. Undeniably however, the five nominated gentlemen certainly seem to be in a good spot right now. The nominated quintet of Iñárritu for The Revenant, McCarthy for Spotlight, McKay for The Big Short, Miller for Mad Max: Fury Road, and Scott for The Martian...

Fresh off its impressive haul at the Golden Globes the weekend, "The Revenant" is poised to nab yet another statuette with a nomination for a Directors Guild of America Award.
The DGA announced its annual slate of honorees for outstanding directorial achievement on Tuesday, and "Revenant" director Alejandro G. Inarritu was among the five nominees. Inarritu also won the DGA award last year, for 2014's "Birdman," and with the new momentum from "The Revenant"'s Globes wins, the director looks like an early favorite to repeat.
The rest of the nominees were rounded out by Tom McCarthy ("Spotlight"), Adam McKay ("The Big Short"), George Miller ("Mad Max: Fury Road"), and Ridley Scott ("The Martian"). In addition to those names, the DGA also included a new category this year, honoring directors who helmed their first feature films in 2015.

No one has been shy about the difficulties that have been endured during Alejandro González Iñárritu's shoot for "The Revenant." The filmmaker's insistence to shoot his wintry drama in sequence, on real deal locations, in natural daylight, has seen his reliance on unpredictable weather lead to a movie that still has yet to shoot its ending, even though the release date is just months away. So yes, things haven't been easy, but as a new report from THR notes, the behind-the-scenes the drama may be matching, or exceeding, whatever ends up on screen. According to the trade, the film's budget is soaring. Originally kicking off with a $60 million budget, the film's costs have already jumped to $95 million are expected to exceed $135 million once all is said and done. And according to an unnamed source, the shoot has been "a living hell." And the blame seems to be coming down...

A memorable 87th annual Academy Awards for Fox Searchlight saw Birdman claim best film, director and two other statuettes to tie with The Grand Budapest Hotel’s four-strong haul.
Boyhood, which entered the evening on six nominations and had been expected to push Birdman in several of the senior categories on Sunday night, won a sole best supporting actress for Patricia Arquette.
The film’s time in the Oscar ceremony spotlight will not be forgotten, however, as Arquette paid tribute to her “Boyhood family” and made an impassioned plea for wage equality that spread like wildfire across social media.
Eddie Redmayne from The Theory Of Everything prevailed in a tight best actor contest to deny Michael Keaton another success for Birdman. The popular victory had the British actor jumping with excitement on stage at the Dolby Theatre.
Julianne Moore finally converted her fifth Academy Award nomination into a win for her performance in Still Alice in what...

Skotchdopole, John Lesher, and director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu, all first-time winners in the category. Inarritu, referring to his pal Alfonso Cuaron who enjoyed success with Gravity at last year’s show, says, “Two Mexicans in a row. That’s suspicious, I guess.” Slightly more seriously, Agi also calls on his fellow Mexicans to help build a strong future for his beloved country. Wow, a good night for Birdman and a surprisingly barren one for Boyhood. Pirates indeed, Ethan Hawke, but glorious pirates.

Birdman came out on top at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday night, winning Best Feature at the ceremony. But it wasn't a total sweep for the film, as Richard Linklater took home Best Director for Boyhood. There weren't any surprises in the acting awards (Julianne Moore, Patricia Arquette, J.K. Simmons, you know the drill). The feature debuts to get highlighted were Justin Simien's Dear White People, which won Best First Screenplay and Nightcrawler, which took Best First Feature along with Best Screenplay. Just one night before the Oscars take over town, stars flocked to the 2015 Film Independent Spirit Awards on the Santa Monica Beach on Saturday (February 21).
Fred Armisen and Kristen Bell joined forces for co-hosting duties and put on a fabulous show as actors and actresses including Scarlett Johansson, Ethan Hawke, Jessica Chastain, Cate Blanchett, Jared Leto and Emma Stone turned up to lend their star power to the IFC airing ceremony.
As for this year's cream of the crop, Michael Keaton (Birdman), Julianne Moore (Still Alice), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) and Patricia Arquette (Boyhood) took home top honors in the lead and supporting acting categories.
Meanwhile, in what very well may be an indicator for what's to come tomorrow at the Academy Awards, "Birdman" was recognized as Best Feature while Richard Linklater nabbed Best Director accolades for "Boyhood".

While "Birdman" may have won the three big Oscar pre-cursor awards — PGA, DGA, and SAG — don't think the love for "Boyhood" is gone. Across the pond, the BAFTAs were handed out today, and Richard Linklater's little movie threw its weight around like a seasoned pro. "Boyhood" won Best Film, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actress at the festivities, with "Birdman" only managing a win for Best Cinematography. What bearing does this have on the Oscars? Probably not all that much except to perhaps suggest tastes differ within the industry. After all, "The Lego Movie" took Best Animated Film at the BAFTAs and wasn't even nominated by the Oscars. "Whiplash" did nicely too, earning Best Supporting Actor, Best Editing and Best Sound. Check out the full list of winners below. Best Film Birdman Alejandro G. Iñárritu, John Lesher, James W. The 68th British Academy Film Awards -- or the BAFTAs, to most -- were handed out this evening at the Royal Opera House in London. Richard Linklater's "Boyhood" ended up taking home three big prizes, including Best Picture and Best Director trophies that were definitely not sure things after it lost the PGA and DGA prizes. If the opinions of members of the international chapter of Aacta are shared by Academy Awards voters, there could be a few upsets at this year.s Oscars.
Birdman won the gongs for best film, screenplay, direction (Alejandro G. Iñárritu) and lead actor (Michal Keaton) at the 4th Aacta International Awards presented at the Hollywood Palladium in Los Angeles on Sunday.
That.s contrary to the Oscars bookmakers who have Boyhood at short odds for best film and its director Richard Linklater and The Theory of Everything.s Eddie Redmayne as favourites in their categories.
Julianne Moore was named best actress for her performance as a Columbia linguistics professor diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's disease in Still Alice, whom the bookies rate as the frontrunner ahead of Wild.s Reese Witherspoon.
Whiplash.s J.K. Simmons took the prize for best supporting actor and Boyhood.s Patricia Arquette was best supporting actress.
