Since The CW revamped its schedule, the football drama All American remains one of the last originals.
Since its spinoff, All American: Homecoming, was also renewed and is scheduled to air sometime in the summer of 2024, it’s not overall surprising they want to capitalize on both.
It’s not uncommon for a TV to expand its universe into spinoffs. Most often, procedural-type franchises such as CSI, Law & Order, and the One Chicago Universe have done it.
However, we’ve seen teen shows do it successfully, including The Vampire Diaries universe on The CW and The Fosters transitioning into Good Trouble on Freeform.
All American and All American: Homecoming are succeeding the way they are. Do we need additional spinoffs?
What is All American About?
All American was inspired by the life of professional football player Spencer Paysinger. Daniel Ezra portrays the fictional lead role of Spencer James.

People are measured by the company they keep—in a superhero’s case, that company is usually the supervillain. Villains, besides giving the hero a reason to exist in the first place, can liven up the joint; a dam burst here, a toppled bridge there, chaos and special effects ensue, and the popcorn munchers are happy. Sherlock Holmes was one of the few heroes who was fun all by himself (due respect to Dr. Watson)—the detective’s obsessive-compulsive brilliance, his monkish lifestyle, and his fondness for beekeeping and cocaine were just some of his more endearing quirks.
The filmed versions of Conan Doyle’s most famous character—not a superhero but seemingly immortal—were not so concerned with Holmes’s idiosyncrasies. This was especially true...

It’S A Foggy Afternoon In Nashville, and Nanci Griffith is sitting in a near-empty restaurant by a cold fireplace. Her face, waif-like except for her animated brown eyes, is tired. Griffith may be one of the most critically acclaimed and beloved veterans of the country-folk-pop scene, but she’s fed up.
Not that anyone could blame her. After touring almost constantly for ten years, garnering a Grammy nomination in 1986 and building a huge following in Ireland and England, she has yet to crack America’s consciousness. “Why do I have to do this?...

In the words of our fearless leader and life coach Eric Taylor, "There are more important things than football." With that in mind, we're not going to bore you with a recap of Super Bowl Lv. We won't remind you that Amanda Gorman and Als interpreter Warren Snipe took home the titles of Mvp before the game even started. We won't tell you how we've personally requested Miley Cyrus, The Weeknd, H.E.R., Jazmine Sullivan and Eric Church perform at all events moving forward. And as for all those commercials? Nah, we won't go into great detail here. Because in the end, Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers defeated Patrick Mahomes and...

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday.
This week’s question:Who’s your favorite TV father? Why? (Characters from current and old shows are fair game.)
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
I wrote a piece for NPR a few years ago about how most of what I learned about being a dad, I soaked up from TV. My own father is gone now; we reconciled when I was older, but when I was a kid, he wasn’t around as much as I wanted. I never lived with a father in the house, so I knew nothing about what it was like. For a long while, I thought most married couples were like Rob and Laura Petrie in “The Dick Van Dyke Show”; sleeping in two twin beds separated by a nightstand. So when I saw John Amos as James Evans Sr.

Score two for two TV teams: Tonight’s Emmy Awards for FX’s The Americans provided a parallel to the final-season wins of another critically acclaimed but underrated drama: Friday Night Lights.
In 2011, Friday Night Lights, the intimate story of a high school football team in small-town Texas, scored an Outstanding Drama Actor win for Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor, and a writing award for showrunner Jason Katims.
Tonight, The Americans collected the same statuettes for best actor Matthew Rhys and the drama category’s outstanding writing award for creators Joel Fields and Joe Weisberg. Weisberg and Fields won for the series finale “Start,” which concluded the story of two Russian agents portrayed by Rhys and Keri Russell posing as an American couple during the Cold War.

I grew up in a sports household. Perhaps this explains why Friday Night Lights has always occupied a rather sizable space in my heart (beyond the rather obvious qualitative reasoning). It amalgamates an incredibly singular storytelling style – taking the “fly on the wall” camera techniques Executive Producer Peter Berg employed on his eponymous 2004 […]

Hulu has planted its flag in Dillon, Texas, grabbing streaming rights to all five seasons of the beloved NBC/DirecTV drama “Friday Night Lights.”
The series’ 76 episodes went live on Hulu Friday morning. “Fnl” episodes also became available for streaming earlier this month on Amazon Prime Video under a deal with NBCUniversal.
Although the pact is not exclusive, Hulu has sought to bulk up its roster of shows with rabid fan followings as well as shows with vast libraries. The arrival of NBC’s long-running “ER” on Hulu earlier this year has prompted a big response from TV critics and fans alike rediscovering the medical sudser.

The 2016 blu ray release of the Frankenstein and Wolf Man Legacy Collections was a moment of celebration for movie and monster lovers everywhere, bringing together all the golden age appearances of Frankenstein’s misbegotten creation and Larry Talbot’s hairy alter-ego. Universal Studios treated those dusty creature features to luminous restorations; from Bride of Frankenstein to She Wolf of London, these essential artifacts never looked less than impeccable and, at times, even ravishing. Colin Clive’s frenzied declaration, “It’s Alive!”, never felt more appropriate.
Now Universal has turned their attention to their other legendary franchise players, Dracula, the sharp-dressed but undead ladies’ man and Im-ho-tep, the cursed Egyptian priest who loved not wisely but too well.

This week’s question: Which current TV couple is giving you relationship goals?
Todd VanDerWerff (@tvoti), Vox
Whenever people ask me what TV show is the best currently running, my go-to answer is “The Americans” for a variety of reasons (it’s really that good, it’s one most people haven’t seen, etc.). But a big reason for that is thanks to the sterling marriage of Philip and Elizabeth Jennings, whose icy cold love fills my heart with joy. Think about it: When the series began, these two spies were just pretending to have a functional relationship — only to have realized that their pretending was essentially the same as something real.

The team that brought you unauthorized musical productions of The O.C. and Cruel Intentions is taking on another one of your nostalgic favorites: Friday Night Lights, which also happens to be the winner of Vulture's High School TV Showdown. Better yet, the man set to play Coach Eric Taylor is someone intimately familiar with the show: Scott Porter, who played paraplegic football star Jason Street on Fnl. To celebrate the occasion, Porter dropped this Dubsmash:The musical will debut in Los Angeles sometime next year. Until then: Clear eyes, full lungs, can't lose!

Let's all sing it together: Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose. Especially when someone is making a "Friday Night Lights" musical.
"The Unauthorized Friday Night Lights Musical" is set to premiere in late spring or early summer in Los Angeles, and comes from Jordan Ross and Lindsey Rosin, the same people behind musical versions of "The O.C." and "Cruel Intentions." The latter got so much buzz that Ross and Rosin landed a deal at NBC to develop a "Cruel Intentions" sequel for television.
The original "Friday Night Lights" ran for five seasons, first on NBC and then on DirecTV, and starred Kyle Chandler as Coach Eric Taylor and Connie Britton as his wife, Tami Taylor. While the show was lowly-rated on air, it's become a beloved classic thanks to streaming services. And it helped launch the careers of many of its young cast members.

The Phantom of the Opera
Written by John Jacoby, Samuel Hofffenstein, Eric Taylor
Directed by Arthur Lubin
U.S.A., 1943
It comes as a surprise to no one when stating that Hollywood is not averse to remaking movies. It is an old practice that goes back many decades, all the way back to the earliest days of the studio system. Great stories, apparently, bear retelling with more modern casts and more modern filmmaking techniques. In some cases, it is an issue of actually modernizing the setting, whereas in others instances the studio believes that audiences crave a new version of a familiar classic even though it was a period piece to begin with. Among several early attempts at refurbishing highly regarded motion pictures was 1943’s Phantom of the Opera, released not quite 20 years after the terrifying original and about 15 years after said original was itself the subject of tinkering to...

In the modern age of movie-going, there are more distractions than ever when it comes to enjoying a night in front of the silver screen. Spearheading the efforts to be polite, but firm, with ever aggressive audiences is the Alamo Drafthouse, and for their latest spot they've chosen a man that embodies both of those qualities and then some. Prepare to be inspired below: You can thank the fine folks at the Drafthouse for bringing back Kyle Chandler's dedicated Coach Eric Taylor for this extremely important message. Though with Friday Night Lights being off the air for four years, that's probably part of the reason the extremely rude audience weren't paying attention to Coach's emotional brilliance. The other part being, of course, that their cell phones and other electronic devices were making it too damned noisy to hear the speech that probably contained some sort of important lesson of...

If you are missing the TV cast that made up the drama Friday Night Lights, you may have been a little less sad at the end of last week. On March 20, Netflix began streaming its newest series, Bloodline, which stars Kyle Chandler as the lead character. Chandler spent five seasons playing everyone’s favorite football coach, Eric Taylor, on Friday Night Lights and will now be playing John Rayburn on the mysterious Netflix drama, which is about a group of adult siblings whose secrets from their childhood are exposed when one of the brothers returns. All 13 episodes from the first season have been released, so you can binge-watch this series the same way you do with other popular Netflix shows like House of Cards and Orange is the New Black. Kyle Chandler has been starring on television for over twenty five years. Here is a look back of some of those popular roles.

“We’re not bad people,” promises Kyle Chandler’s John Rayburn at the end of the first full trailer for Netflix’s new drama, Bloodline, “but we did a bad thing.” And since that sentence appears to be the dark and ominous slogan for the series, I’m guessing John is going to be a much different and, potentially, a much dangerous character than Coach Eric Taylor in Friday Night Lights. Although Chandler is the headlining star, the cast of Bloodline features many familiar names and faces, including Ben Mendelsohn (The Dark Knight Rises), Linda Cardellini (Freaks and Geeks, Mad Men), Sam Shepard (The Right Stuff), Sissy Spacek (Carrie), Norbert Leo Butz (Dan in Real Life), Jamie McShane (Sons of Anarchy), Jacinda Barrett (Suits) and Enrique Murciano (Without a Trace). With a new NFL season starting up, we take a look at the best fictional quarterbacks in TV and film history.
It's become almost an annual rite of passage to root against Tom Brady. I mean, look at him, the handsome man who spent a pre-Super Bowl press conference a few years ago rambling on about ball preference. I don’t care how old you are, Brady talking about people preferring “old balls” is pretty hilarious. He won his sixth Super Bowl in 2019, the most ever by any NFL player, and continues to give us reason to root against him by being so damn good.
Brady's career seems like it's taken right out of a film script, either a drama about a diabolical ego-maniac so possessed with winning that he’s been creatively cheating for years, or a feel-good-story about a diamond in the rough...

Stop me if you've heard this one before: the long-rumored "Friday Night Lights" movie is not happening.
Executive producer Peter Berg put the rumors to rest for good after more than a year of back-and-forth news on Monday (Dec. 9). "There's not gonna be a movie," Berg tells Collider. "We talked about it, some people thought it was a good idea, some didn't; I've come to believe it's probably not a good idea and I seriously doubt it's gonna happen."
"Friday Night Lights" star Taylor Kitsch also put the cult TV favorite back in the headlines on Monday when he adamantly refused to take part in the movie should it ever be made (which it looks like it won't). "I'll just say no. [Slams fist on table.] No, period," Kitsch tells Vulture. "I'm not doing it. I'm never gonna be in that movie. There was already a movie! And the show ended f***in' spot-on.

Since NBC’s little-seen but much-loved drama Friday Night Lights finished its fifth season in 2011, fans have pushed for the show’s producers, Peter Berg and Brian Grazer, to get rolling on a film update to the series. Unfortunately, Connie Britton, who played the coach’s wife on the show and in the 2004 film, recently told TV personality Andy Cohen that a movie is not in the cards, since her onscreen husband, Kyle Chandler, is uninterested to reprise his role.
On Watch What Happens Live, she told Cohen, “I love the idea. I think it would be a great idea. But my former husband, Coach Eric Taylor…,” referring to the strict but wholehearted character that Kyle Chandler played for five seasons (and won an Emmy for in 2011).
Chandler already confirmed that he’s not interested in an interview with MTV News back in December, saying, “They ended it at exactly the right time,...

“There’s always a Friday Night Lights movie just around the corner — always just around the corner.” — Peter Berg
Last we saw Eric and Tami Taylor on Friday Night Lights, they’d left Texas for Philadelphia, where Tami became dean of admissions at a prestigious school and Coach was starting from scratch with a new crop of inner-city football players. But series creator Peter Berg and showrunner Jason Katims had barely wrapped the show’s five-season run in 2011 when both men began dropping hints that they wanted to bring these beloved characters to the big screen. Kyle Chandler is the one putting the brakes on a "Friday Night Lights" movie, according to Connie Britton. The "Nashville" star sat down with host Andy Cohen in the "Watch What Happens: Live" clubhouse Monday night (Oct. 7) and bemoaned the fact that Chandler put the kibosh on her dream project.
"You know, there's been a lot of talk about a lot of things. And some people are really excited about it, and other people aren't," Britton tells Cohen, just before throwing Chandler under the bus.
"I love the idea. I think it would be a great idea. But my former ... husband ... Coach Eric Taylor ..." Cohen interjects: "He thinks you did it already?" Britton replies, "Well, and he has a point. What do you think?"
When Cohen admits he would be in the theater on opening night, Britton latches on to the sympathetic voice of reason. "And we would only do...

For the devoted, it’s hard to watch Kyle Chander play anyone but man-among-men Coach Eric Taylor from Friday Night Lights. But in the terrific, bittersweet indie The Spectacular Now—Owen Gleiberman calls it “one of the rare truly soulful and authentic teen movies”— Chandler plays a character who’s practically the anti-coach: a deadbeat, boozy and long-absent father to Miles Teller’s character.
EW: Were you excited to play someone so against the type?
Chandler: No! Because when I first read the script I thought, how in the hell am I supposed to create this guy? It made my stomach hurt.

"Clear eyes, full hearts, can't lose." This saying is repeated often throughout Friday Night Lights, NBC’s critically lauded 2006-2011 high school football drama. It's not only a mantra of the American football team around which the show revolves, but also provides a nice summation of the drama’s themes and the way in which it was made. Sure, the creators and characters faced their fair share of obstacles along the way, but the end result justified the struggles and hard work.
Despite being widely loved by critics, Friday Night Lights suffered with poor ratings and as a result faced cancellation on a number of occasions, notably at the end of the second series (the show’s weakest by some distance, no doubt thanks in...

The Spectacular Now
Directed by James Ponsoldt
Written by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber
USA, 2013
The teenage genre is an infinite well Hollywood enjoys returning to, even if such repetition can frequently wind up creating some of the most inherently false-seeming films. We like watching movies about teenagers so we can be nostalgic for our high-school years, pretending that we were more popular than we really were, or simply revisiting all those good times on the big screen. But it’s rare for a teenage-heavy movie to portray the high school years accurately, because to do so is to portray the unending awkwardness and unspoken pain that fuels most of modern adolescence. So it’s somewhat gratifying to watch The Spectacular Now, which captures a troubled teenage life confidently and honestly through its portrayal of a romance on the edge of a nervous breakdown.

Y'all sitting down? The "Friday Night Lights" movie script is in the hands of Mrs. Coach herself, Connie Britton. The current star of "Nashville" said it's only a matter of time that the movie gets made.
"I have the script for a potential movie spin-off of 'Fnl.' I think it’s just a matter of finding a time when everyone can do it," Britton told Ladies' Home Journal.
"Friday Night Lights," which was based on the movie of the same name starring Billy Bob Thorton, aired on NBC and DirecTV from 2006-2011. In the two years since the show ended its five-season run, fans have been clamoring for a continuation of the story of Coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler), his wife Tami Taylor (Britton) and the rest of the Dillon Panthers crew.
In 2012, executive producer Peter Berg said he was almost done with the "Friday Night Lights" movie script.

Friday Night Lights, “Pilot”
Written and Directed by Peter Berg
Aired October 3rd, 2006 on NBC
The opening images in a pilot are usually incredibly specific ones. They’ve been chosen as the very first thing viewers will see, what will introduce them to this series and help them decide whether to tune in or flip to something else. In Alias, it’s Sydney Bristow’s face, her head held under water. In Battlestar Galactica, it’s a ticking clock. In Justified it’s a man in a cowboy hat and boots, heading to a duel at high noon. In Friday Night Lights, it’s Texas. This is a series that, more than any one character, is about a community. It’s about the people who fill that community, from all walks of life, and what ties them together or tears them apart. Friday Night Lights and Dillon, Texas are at once diffuse and distinct,...

Brian Grazer has said that a new Friday Night Lights movie is still in the works.
The producer, whose Imagine Entertainment made the original 2004 movie and its subsequent TV series, revealed that the fresh film spinoff could utilise the crowdfunding model recently used by Veronica Mars and Zach Braff's Wish I Was Here.
"We made a terrific feature with Peter Berg, turned it into a terrific TV series and will now make a movie from that series," Grazer told Deadline. "I'm not sure such a thing has been done before."
Berg and Friday Night Lights series writer Jason Katims were working on a script to revive the football drama for the big screen as recently as last year.
The story is said to focus on the lives of football coach Eric Taylor (Kyle Chandler) and his wife Tami (Connie Britton) after they leave Texas.

Connie Britton has said that she wants to see a Friday Night Lights movie.
The Nashville actress played Tami Taylor, the wife of Coach Eric Taylor, in the television series that ended back in 2010.
Britton spoke about the possibility of a movie based on the NBC-turned-DirecTV series while on the red carpet at this weekend's White House Correspondents' Dinner.
"I would love it to happen. I'm a big supporter of it happening. I don't know if we will see it or not," Britton told E! Online.
"I know it was being written and Peter Berg is really serious about so I think if everybody got on board, I don't see why we couldn't have a movie."
Friday Night Lights movie speculation comes on the heels of the resurrection of Veronica Mars.
The former television series will become a film following a hugely successful Kickstarter campaign.

Glee returned last night with one of the most emotionally charged episodes in the show's four-season history. As gunshots rang out in the halls of McKinley High, the choir members found themselves in one of the scariest situations imaginable.
What was filming that scene like? We recently had the opportunity to chat with one of Hollywood's nicest stars, Dot Marie Jones who plays Coach Shannon Beiste, as she shared some behind the scenes insight into "Shooting Star" and playing everyone's favorite football coach since Eric Taylor.

"One Tree Hill's" Nathan and Haley Scott took 21% of the vote, with Tami and Eric Taylor from "Friday Night Lights" just behind them with 16%. With all the other competition taken out of the running, can Coach and Mrs. Coach overtake Tree Hill's most beloved duo?

Last week’s pilot of NBC’s “Jekyll and Hyde” drama Do No Harm premiered to disastrously low ratings.
Although The Office and the series finale of the beloved 30 Rock would seem like promising lead-ins for any show, audiences apparently unified in switching their TV sets off at 10 p.m.
Do No Harm, starring Steven Pasquale as a bipolar doctor, posted the lowest ratings ever for a broadcast scripted series premiere during the regular season, raking in a 0.9 rating in the key demo. Adding to its list of accomplishments, it was also the least-watched drama in TV history among total viewers, drawing only 3.1 million viewers.
Of course, it had some tough competition, namely CBS’s Elementary and ABC’s Scandal. However, it’s likely the pilot’s performance will bury the series after just one week on the tube.

Zero Dark Thirty is the engrossing saga of the decade-long hunt for Osama bin Laden. Or, if you're a television viewer, the engrossing saga of a bunch of TV actors putting on suits or fatigues in the most Oscar-buzzy game of "Hey! It's that guy!" ever played. Other than star Jessica Chastain, who plays the dogged CIA analyst Maya, pretty much everyone else is most recognizable from their TV work.James Gandolfini: In Zdt, he's the CIA director, closely modeled on Leon Panetta. But you know him as Tony Soprano. Obviously. Kyle Chandler: In Zdt, he's Joseph Bradley, the CIA station chief in Islamabad. But you know him as Coach Eric Taylor, world's best human, from Friday Night Lights. Chris Pratt: In Zdt, he's Justin, one of the members of Devgru (a.k.a. However, Chandler - who played football coach Eric Taylor - told MTV News: "My general attitude about Friday Night Lights is, it was a great movie with Billy Bob [Thornton, who starred in the original film] and it was a great TV show." He added: "They ended it at exactly the right time and in exactly the right way, as well." Chandler's co-star Connie (more)...

For years now we’ve been hearing vague murmurings of a new Friday Night Lights movie that would pick up where the superlative series left off. However, Kyle Chandler has rather spoiled the party by suggesting he wouldn’t want to be involved.
