Presented by Lisa Frankenstein, 1989 Week is dialing the clock back to the crossroads year for the genre with a full week of features that dig six feet under into the year. Today, Rachel Reeves lists the five baddest teen queens of 1989.
Bridging the gap between the ’80s and ’90s, 1989 was an interesting year for horror. With a robust roster of strong slasher icons to lean on, innovative sub-genres and a thriving physical media industry, 1989 desperately clung to the last gasp of the ’80s while tentatively experimenting with what the ’90s might bring. Along with a wealth of later-entry franchise sequels, this indecisive decade straddling also resulted in some eclectic representations of all-to-familiar tropes, including the “bad girl.”
The allure of the bad girl is one of the most enduring tropes in horror film history. Whether labeled as a witch, vampire, monster, sexually promiscuous, uppity or any other brand of stigmatizing language,...

Charlotte Ross rose to fame thanks to her role on Days of Our Lives. From 1987 to 1991, Ross portrayed Eve Donovan on the soap opera. While Ross has gone on to achieve success in primetime, she could be returning to her soap opera roots.

In 1987, Ross debuted as Eve on Days of Our Lives. Eve is a teenage prostitute, who is revealed to be the daughter of Shane Donovan (Charles Shaughnessy) and Gabrielle Pascal (Karen Moncrieff). When most people imagine a movie monster, they probably think of one of horror's iconic creatures: a zombie lurching in a graveyard, a vampire hunting its prey, a werewolf transforming in the moonlight. But even the classics occasionally get old. Over the years, horror films have become more adventurous with their premises, expanding the concept of what a "monster" is and can be in cinema.
Maybe the monster is a masked human being with homicidal impulses. Sometimes monsters are personifications of concepts -- like grief, rage, or the fear of losing touch with reality. Evil gingerbread cookies, a rampaging tire, or a carnivorous bed can appear on the screen. There have been some weird horror movie monsters. Lately, filmmakers seem ready to shock and surprise audiences by subverting our expectations. Grab your popcorn, be wary of incoming spoilers, and get ready to be appalled, delighted, and terrified. If you were thinking that Billy Warlock was born with his name, which would be kind of cool since it does sound at least a little impressive, you might be kind of disappointed since his birth name is William Alan Leming, which is kind of a far cry from the fearsome-sounding surname he took on eventually. His father’s last name was Warlock however, and his father actually did stunt work for Kurt Russell apparently. It was also his father that helped to get him into the business since he helped him get a part as Robin Williams’ stunt double for

PerformanceA man forcibly stripped and smeared with dog shit; a kiss, carefully choreographed to evade the censor’s gaze; a liberated prisoner devouring a living, squirming squid: these images live beyond the constraints of their time, imprinted in my mind. They shock and they dare but, most of all, they hold power because they transgress the received rules of acceptability and decency.Subversive and transgressive images were almost omnipresent at Bristol’s Cinema Rediscovered festival, and with good reason. Many so-called great films are decorated as such precisely because they challenge: society is weighed, measured, and found wanting. Politically charged art seeks change, in part, through depiction and exposure, a process illustrated in Nicolas Roeg’s Performance (1970). The conservative and reactionary Chas (James Fox) undergoes transformation when confronted by the free love and multiculturalism of Turner’s (Mick Jagger) bohemian lifestyle. Transgression is an act that challenges dominant power structures,...

It wasn’t until the first few years of the ’90s that the 1989 film Society found its way onto my radar because of the twenty-something video store clerk, who carried a copy of the latest Fangoria magazine rolled into his back pocket, who would slip rated-r films my way without my parents’ consent. It was always in his “Employee Picks” section, most often already rented with only the lone slipcase left for my young mind to try and piece together what this film could be about. But the video store guru, who introduced me to horror films like Don’t Look Now and The Changeling, loaned me his personal copy of the film and, after getting a large pizza and a one-liter of Dr. Pepper, I took it straight home.

Society (1989) screens Midnights this weekend (March 29th and 30th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Nite Grindhouse film series.
Society (1989) directed by Brian Yuzna (producer of Re-animator) is a strange horror/sci-fi satire on the yuppie way of life.
Beverly Hills teen (Billy Warlock – great as our perplexed and horrified hero.) begins to suspect that there’s something very wrong with his snobbish family, is he imagining it or are they… inhuman?!
Society is one original and shocking black comedy. There’s never a dull moment in the wacky story, which starts out as a paranoia mystery then only gets increasingly weird from there on out. It all builds to a warped finale that you won’t forget! It’s one of those surreal and gruesome terrors that makes you wonder if you...

Remember 1995's Baywatch Nights? Oh, we 'member a whole pile of David Hasselhoff-starring strangeness...
This article originally appeared on Den of Geek UK.
For younger readers, the original Baywatch was an action drama that charted the professional and personal lives of county lifeguards in Los Angeles, saving people from drowning but also tackling other seaside perils like sharks, earthquakes and serial killers. The show was almost cancelled after its disappointing first season in 1989, but thanks to the efforts of producer and star David Hasselhoff, it was resuscitated for first-run syndication and found huge international success over the following ten seasons.
The conventional wisdom that brought us 2017's Baywatch film with Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, along with so many other reboots, is that something is easier to market if it has already existed in some form than if it's entirely original, and that same logic has applied...

Remember 1995's Baywatch Nights? Oh, we 'member a whole pile of David Hasselhoff-starring strangeness...

When we look back on Dwayne Johnson's breakthrough to the A-list in about ten years' time (“Did President Johnson get the film roles he deserved?”), we'll have to consider that his status as franchise viagra, as demonstrated in Baywatch, has led him to pick projects that are sort of beneath him.
Baywatch is the latest in a line of formerly popular TV shows to get an ironic Starsky & Hutch-style big screen reboot, following the enormous success of the Jump Street movies and the resounding failure of this year's ChiPS. Special Mention: The Rocky Horror Picture Show
Directed by Jim Sharman
Screenplay by Richard O’Brien and Jim Sharman
1975, USA
For the unfamiliar, The Rocky Horror Picture Show is the film adaptation of a popular musical stage production composed and written by Richard O’Brien, a struggling actor at the time who was best known for his performances in such musicals as Hair and Jesus Christ Superstar. For O’Brien, The Rocky Horror Picture Show was an homage to drive-in double features and science fiction B-movies of the fifties, and ironically, the film itself went on to become the ultimate midnight movie. To this day, screenings held in and around its anniversary as well as on Halloween sell out. It has never been pulled by 20th Century Fox from its original 1975 release, and it continues to play in cinemas four decades after its premiere, making it the longest-running theatrical release in film history.

It’s the most uncomfortable type of horror scene, but if done correctly, can pack a gut punch. The violation scene is the moment when the character’s vulnerability is betrayed and our empathy immerses us deeper into their dreadful ordeal. The young child possessed by an evil spirit. The unlucky bystander assaulted in a tunnel. The crazed woman submitting to a creature of non human origin. The violation scene can be emotional or it can be exploitative, but it’s almost always guaranteed to get us talking.

The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari (1919)- Cesare abducting Jane
Even though it was one of the originators of German Expressionist film, The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari is often regarded as the pinnacle for the movement. Two of the movement’s basic tenets were distorted lines and shapes and overly theatrical movements from the actors, and both are well on display in this creepy scene.

For every horror film there seems to be an insurmountable pile of lesser sequels trailing behind it. Every A Nightmare on Elm Street yields an A Nightmare on Elm Street: Part 2… or Freddy’s Dead. Classics like Hellraiser eventually get dragged down into a quagmire of dirge, and not even Clive Barker’s promise to produce a reboot can make alleviate the suffering you’ve already gone through having watched Hellraiser: Inferno.

If you are old enough to remember the good old days of renting out horror movies on videos you’ll remember the joy of watching the trailers for new releases, even if you’d seen them many times before. There was a lot of work put into them and they did their job well. One I always remember seeing and it left me wanting more was the trailer for Society, just a shame I never managed to get it. Now though, with Arrow Video’s Blu-ray release, I finally get to see the film in all its gory glory.

Arrow Video unveils one of the most impressive Blu-ray packages of 2015 with its remastered presentation of Brian Yuzna’s languished body horror classic Society. Completed in 1989, along with the writer/producer’s sophomore effort Bride of Re-Animator, his debut wouldn’t see theatrical release in the Us until 1992, several months after David Cronenberg unveiled similar monstrous sphincter designs in the celebrated Naked Lunch. Though it’s generated a loyal cult following, and was treated to a 2002 DVD release that’s long been out of print, Yuzna’s class conscious metaphor still manages to unsettle with its inspired gross-out spectacle, gifting audiences a finale every bit as memorable as Cronenberg’s early provocations.

Bill Whitney’s just an ordinary American high school kid. Sure, he may live in a Beverly Hills mansion. He might drive a brand new Jeep to the beach. But deep down, he has the same hang-ups as most teenagers: he distrusts authority, resents his parents, and suspects that he might actually be adopted.
Gradually, however, we suspect that there might be something more to Billy’s paranoid fantasies than raging hormones - his parents really do seem to be up to something sinister - something to do with private parties, naked orgies, and shunting...

Even by today's gore-soaked standards, Brian Yuzna's 1989 cult body horror satirical classic "Society" is extreme.
Former "Baywatch" star Billy Warlock plays a popular Beverly Hills high school student who feels that he doesn't fit in with his family or their high-society friends.
An audio tape of his family participating in what sounds like a murderous and incestuous orgy sets off events, but the film is really all about the final 20-30 minutes.
Turns out the one-percenters are a different species. Their orgies involve them bringing their bodies together literally into one liquidy giant pile of writhing flesh, absorbing and eating innocent people at massive flesh parties. Cue some of the most elaborate (and disturbing) make-up effects ever put to screen.
Speaking with the Horror Channel recently, Yuzna says that a sequel entitled "Society 2: Body Modification" is on the way and he is "actively working on it". This version...

A few years ago there was some vague talk of a very belated sequel to Brian Yuzna's jaw-dropping, flesh-ripping class satire Society. Aside from the title - Society 2: Body Modification - no details were forthcoming and nothing much else was ever heard about it. Speaking to the Horror Channel recently, however, Yuzna has revealed that the film is still "in active development".Society, should it have passed you by, premiered in 1989 and involved Billy Warlock discovering that his wealthy family and peers were perhaps not entirely what he'd always assumed. His investigations into some inexplicable oddities take him into ever more surreal and alarming territory, until the infamous, extraordinary FX extravaganza at the end. You get some sense of the goings-on in the trailer above, but really not the half of it. It's not every day you see a man turned inside-out through his anus.Anyway... The original...

Maybe you’ve been chomping at the bit awaiting the arrival of the latest installment of 1980x. Maybe you forgot about me.. well I didn’t forget about you dear readers. I got soooo busy reviewing goddamn movies that I forgot about what it is that I love about writing about ideas. Concepts. I forgot that analysis is anal with a few letters scrawled at the end to make it look fancy. Not that there’s anything wrong with anal… which brings us to tonight’s conversation on It Came From 1980x. Let’s talk about the psycho-sexual, munging and cunnilinguini of Brian Yuzna’s 1989 satire horror gross out, Society.

Written by Stephen Gevedon and Brad Anderson
2001, USA
If there was ever a perfect setting for a horror movie, it would be the abandoned Danvers State Mental Hospital. Built in 1878 on an isolated site in rural Massachusetts, it was a multi-acre, self-contained psychiatric hospital rumoured to have been the birthplace of the pre-frontal lobotomy. The hospital was the setting for the 2001 horror film Session 9, where an asbestos clean-up crew discover a series of nine tapes, which have recorded a patient with multiple personalities, all of which are innocent, except for number nine. Brian Yuzna, a name I am very familiar with. You see Re-Animator is my all time favourite horror film, and Yuzna served as producer and he then went on to direct the two sequels. I have seen a lot of his other films, but one that really flew under the radar was Society.
A friend had brought it to my attention and I looked it up and was surprised to find it was Yuzna’s directorial debut. But the more I read and saw from it, the more I was hesitant to watch it, I thought it perhaps it was too disgusting for me sit through. Crazy for me to say because I can sit through anything; but I built all this up in my head. I then made the decision to grow a pair and watch it for my 31 days, no backing out if it was on the list.
